As we all know by now, my highly-anticipated and critically-acclaimed debut album BLUE COLLAR sold about 15,000 copies during the first week. As it stands now in the mass-marketing, single-driven genre of Hip-Hop music, this is considered a flop or a failure.? Or is it?
While none of these artists that I named are rappers, they all understood the ingredients for success:
This is something that rap artists today have yet to fully understand the importance of. Just look at it: 9 out of 10 rap concerts are wack. After one or two singles, the rest of the album is intentionally trash, but we, as the artists, do not care because we have our singles. Also, some rappers are so insecure that if anyone gives us constructive criticism, or [in some cases] is just a little overzealous as a fan, we are ready to spaz out on them. Rappers have become divas (bitches), and the rap industry, radio, DJs and journalists have become complicit, spineless cowards.
Do not get it twisted; I am not heartbroken over my first week sales because I understand that through my appearances on shows like Jimmy Kimmel [You Tube], Carson Daly & David Letterman, my forthcoming tours with Wu-Tang Clan and A Tribe Called Quest as well as many opportunities that are opened for me through the Creator ALL afford me the chance to do what no other rapper has done: truly earn fans that stick with me because of the quality of the product and not the smoke & mirrors of marketing & promotion.
Keep encouraging your friends to purchase BLUE COLLAR. And know that 35,000 Rhymefest records sold hold more power than 1 Million Laffy Taffy records. I have managed to sell a consistent 5,000 - 6,000 records a week since my debut on the charts. My hopes are to not only continue that trend, but to increase my unit sales through the word-of-mouth of how good BLUE COLLAR actually is, as well as coming to a city near YOU to show you how great Rhymefest is. So, on to the question:
What do first week sales in Hip-Hop really mean?
Talk to me...
Comments
Lyfe is a great example of going platinum, the slow burn way. He tours like a mad man, which is thinik is more important than the other stuff on your list.
Juelz and Gnarls Barkley are other examples of low first week sales that grew over time.
I think the fact that he has a respectable album true to himself and not filled with gimmicks nor formulas makes this album worth purchasing. At the end of the day intergrity means more than sells and Rhymefest has the respect amongst his peers artists who may go multi platinum will never have for not selling his soul to this industry.
stop makin excuses, you wack and yo album flopped, point blank. dynomite is cool ,but you ain't really sayin shit but how nice you are on da mic. nobody wants a cd full of battle raps. and your image sucks. you should've signed with kanye, you would've gotten more shine and he could've helped you with your image.
Black Eye Peas' Elefunk album would be the same. I remember the first single started off really slow but that album stayed on the charts for like a year and went multi-platinum in the end.
I HEARD YOUR MUSIC & I WILL BE BUYING !!! BUT... DID YOU REALLY HAVE TO PULL LAFFY TAFFY OUT OF YOUR ASS IN THIS BLOG?!?! DAMN, JUST BE HAPPY THESE BROTHERS AREN'T STILL SLANGING TO OTHER BROTHERS ANYMORE. STOP WITH THE SCAPEGOATS ALREADY.!!! YES, IT WAS CORNY , BUT THAT SONG IT DAMN NEAR 2 YEARS OLD!!! SHOULD WE CLOWN IN 2008 FOR THE CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP?? REMEMBER, IT TOOK COMMERCIAL RAP LIKE HAMMER & VANILLA ICE DOING BIG NUMBERS BEFORE "DWITE MANN" PUT PROMO $$$ IN WHAT WE DO.
ITS GRAVY MAN -A AS LONG AS YOUR MUSIC IS ACTUALLY HOT, THATS THE IMPORTANT THING. YOU WILL GET REVEIWS BASED UPON SKILL, NOT MANY PEOPLE PAY ATTENTION TO RECORD SALES EXCEPT MAGAZINES AND ARTIST (SEE HOW MUCH THE CHECKS GONNA BE)
Sometimes it b like that, it takes the slow mothafuckaz a minute 2 catch on, plus ur label ain't promotin u at all. I haven't seen the video for ur 2nd single yet, I think u or the label r releasin the wrong single the album is hot I've been playin it since the release. I think u don't need a image if u b urself, I feel kanye label would of definitely been better 4 ur career but its a slow hard grind, stick wit it.
J Records sucks at rap promo - everyone knows this. Every rapper that ever touched the label said the same thing - Shells, Cassidy, Busta etc. al
I frequent Target, Wal-mart and other large retailers. honestly...I NEVER saw your CD. Can't say that's uncommon...I never saw Jean Grae or Talib on their shelves either. Your release date was not heavily promoted. Keep grinding.
You Garbage. We had this discussion 4 or 5 months ago... I told you about blowing up and that you would only sink if you tried to go your own way. You ain't good and stop hatingon Laffy Taffy because they can make garbage sell while your so called new aged BULLSHIT ain't worth buying! Bu bu but I battled Eminem 10 years ago and... stop crying son. Bush might not like Black people but I fucking HATE YOU!
I never thought that the first week sales matter. First week sales just show how well your project was promoted. I look at consistency with sales. I make up line graphs and bar graphs with the sales data for albums so its easier to analyze. Its always better to increase then decrease and a lot of rappers are not cutting it when it comes to mantaining sales. I'm glad to see that you are not one of them and that your sales are consistent. I think thats its good to slowly go up and slowly come down, rather then blow up and then blow down.
Yo Fest,
These dudes will keep hating. I aint hatin on the Laffy Taffy's cuz thats music you can hear in a club. But you Need a balance, shit you can bump while you drive or just in da crib. Dats the music that needs to give you some sort of motivation. Dats what Rhymefest is about. Yo Rhymefest, consider better promotion, cuz I follow the game pretty thoroughly and barely new about ya album dropping.
Whatever the case, keep ya head up, cuz at least you know you One of da Real Artists out there.
Tell the Haters to Eat a Dic
I don't think first week sales matter, because if I think the album good, I'm going to listen to it. I actually liked your album once I listened to it, I think it has a great message on it, and people should take some time and listen to it.
Nobody gives a shyt about your music but you, and that "Brand New" shyt is the worst. Stick to mixtapes or something. Go clean yourself up too. U a raggety looking mufucka.
Laffy Taffy all day on yo slaw ass, be mad. Your shyt is a weed plate, better go fill out an applicaiton at Walmart dummy. Tuff luck nigga, there is always FUBU. HA HA HA!!!
hey man look here...don't become the victim of numbers...becuase we all know that they can drive an artist crazy...just keep on doing what you do and pump out that good realistic music
YOU NEED A CROSSOVER HIT if u wanna get anywhere!I dont matter if u the best rapper in the whole world.the music BUYING public only buys what they think is good for THEIR taste NOT what U think is great.the other thing is that some ppl just dont like u because of kanye and jesus walks.........................GOOD LUCK HOMIE,U GONNA NEDD IT
If your sayin word of mouth is gonna get people to buy your music you might wanna start being a lil more personable with your fans.I saw you in Hyde Park a few weeks back when Good Music slid thru my blocks block party. You was sayin wuddup to everyone but you had that pompous "I'm a Star" vibe bout you.I saw people, kids, and fellow artists walkin up to introduce themselves just to show love and you jus quickly brushed em off like they was nothin.ake smiles and ounds and "keep it movin". You had them dudes in suits around you like someone was gonna try and harm you in yo own city.... and my block happens to be an affluent(wealthy) block.Kind of puts a question mark your crediblilty as the man you say you are.Especially when GLC is just walkin up to people introduciin himself(no security hoverin over him) with the humbleness we grew to love him for. He has that "I'm da shit" aura bout him but he don't isolate da people while doin it.
Good luck wit da album tho.Maybe round 2 might be a lil better b/c you be spittin that real talk music.
-HP55th
It is unfortunanate that sometimes in order get your music exposed and increase those sales up you may need a gimmick or two.
I think Ryhmefest should have come out w/ a track repping Chi-town-featuring Ryhme fest and Kanye, Lupa and JZ. There is nothing wrong with bringing attention to the music first. But allot of so called back pack artist try to do it all on their own. It's like trying to re-invent the wheel unneccesarily.
Blue Collar was one of the hottest albums this year, hands down....I copped it the first day, and have been bumping it ever since...you need to change your name though, dude...Rhymefest is the most generic name I have ever heard, and unlesss you wanna start a group with a nigga named summer jam, you need to switch up
I'm From Quebec, Canada... Brand New catch my attention... Your album is the best hip-hop album since... humm.... since I don't know !!! Blue Collar is a very good album !!! Tell the story !
I understand you situation but seriously you couldve left d4l outta of the blog cause it seems like youre bitter and you might be surprised that people might actually listen to laffy taffy and you muzik. Dont limit yourself.
new look????????????????????????????????????????
:)
WHY DO PEOPLE THINK D4L ACTUALLY MOVED UNITS? They got us bamboozled. Check the soundscan. Them niggas didn't sniff gold either. Not close. Just because Clear Channel and the other radio powerhouses played it every hour does not mean they sold albums. They didn't.
Fest,
You should respond to what "TheRealChicago Says" cat said. We'd really like to hear you side of that story cause that sounds bad. That sounds more like a Kanye move and the opposite of how you promote yourself as being.
hatin on other people's music is wrong that put you in my bad books.do what you do let others do what they do.seriously i only heard that brand new joint like once and you where like kanye's bus boy in your in video you kept bumpin your release date up and down.we don't even know what joints you got on the album give us a decent single and you really need to humble yourself get a new image or somethin.
maroon 5 actually had good singles akon good singles lyfe toured like crazy.
so sitting there getting all bitter ain't appealing.maybe you should consider remainin a ghostwriter
1. If you are going to make the argument about albums being slow to catch on, add keyshia cole to the list. she stayed on the road since 2004 promoting her album. is that a flop or success? but let's break it down. Chris brown is looked like a mega star and he's only sold 1.1mil. is that successful or a flop. Since I Am in the music industry and have been for a long time, i can say flop because a star sell units. not bull shit 1 mil sales but real units. Just because your album didnt move units during its first week doenst give you a right to bring up laffy taffy. i hate that song but it's entertaining, and at the end of the day, and I'm sure you forgot about this homie in your quest to "keep it real" YOU ARE IN THE ENTERTAINMENT BUSINESS. Not the entertainment party. It's about units moved. people spend money to put out a prodct which will generate sales and turn a profit. obviously you didnt read the writing on the wall when you decided to get in the game. Don't get me wrong, i hope that your album picks up steam, and generates sales.
wassup rhymefest,
im really feelin what your sayin, from rappers bein too lazy and wantin tha label to do all tha work for them. and ur on key in what you are sayin there too many pride cats in the game and not enough humble cats. but keep grindin dog, ill see you at the top.
check me out i got some heat wih your name on it..holla at me
Rhymefest you a bitter nigga for hatin on D4L. You sound like every other mad rapper cause the South is running shyt. Your music sucks and there isnt shyt about you that is appealing. Do a worthy mixtape before an LP, and maybe we will listen. Maybe not....dont quit your day job. Flop bum....flop flop flop....
first of all d4l sucks dick but that's not the point... I'm one of the ones that bought this album the first week and it's the shit. i'll get the next album too whenever that comes too. All i wanna say is don't sell yourself out for what other people want you to be.
"I wish I wasn't good at rhymin, because then my dumb ass would go diamond."
Nobody ever lost money underestimating the intelligence of the American public, ESPECIALLY the market who buys CD's AKA Tweeny girls. A lot of people don't appreciate the album on this blog it looks like, but how many of them actually understand everything you're saying? I'm not speaking about understanding the message overall, or some broad generalization, but they literally don't understand certain references... How many people on this blog actually understand how the Patriot Act pertains to drug arrests, or maybe who Larry David is? Hmm? It's a lot easier to digest something designed for children isn't it? Just "shut" off, go do your dance and accept what is given to you like the lemmings you are.
85/10/5... I understand how the whole dichotomy between fact and opinion works blah blah blah, but comparing the artistic merits of D4L to Rhymefest would be a hard fucking sell. Rhymefest had an album, D4L had a single that was written for them. D4L was more successful because, amongst other things, it translated well into ringtones. BET also decided to get behind it because they love giving the black community that "ig'nant shit" 24/7.
Trying to explain this kind of stuff to people who lack the cognitive skills or flat out don't want to reach true "self actualization" is pointless though. Either you get it, or you don't.
Rhymefest,
I support artist that try to say something new like your self, however I have no love for you B. I clearly remember one of your early Allhiphop.com interviews, before the album dropped, were you said something along the lines of, Talib will not sale because his music is limited to the conscious back packers (you remeber that comment don't you). Funny how that venom always comes back to bit that ass homie.
Since the whole blog took a left from the original ?, first week sales mean a lot. It means a lot to the kids on these forums that try to act like they know what's going on in the music industry... "Oh fest only sold 15K, he flopped.", shit like that. That's who it means a lot to. Apparently the record companies didn't back out on the aforementioned artist who went on to be huge... I mean look at Maroon 5, whatever record company they are signed to probably is going to use their upcoming album release as an incentive for their shareholders to load up on shares! Akon is huge now, and look at Lyfe... all doing quite well now. The internet has proven itself to be a catalyst to many things, but to a lot of the people who use it, it boils down to 3 things... cowardice, lies, and perversion. Quit going on forums acting like you know what this guys career holds for him and act like he is hating because he called out wack shit for being just that; wack.
I pose the following question to any of the people who would say Fest is throwing the proverbial "salt" in D4L's game. Do you enjoy Metallica? How about Garth Brooks? No? Well then by the same logic you try to damn fest with you must be hating on Metallica and Garth because they sold CrAzY ReCoRdS and I guess that would make you some HaTiN AsS BitCheZz
Step your cortex game up
Dear myspace.com/macktheknifeproductions says... :
I feel you and you have a point, but once again, like Little Brother's Phonte, I think people are putting too much on this "too intelligent" for the crowd shit. To me, that's overblown and kind of exaggerated.
For example, I have a Masters degree in English. Reading is my favorite hobby. If you can't make something about the Patriot Act, or Larry David that's ENTERTAINING, I don't wanna hear that shit. I'd rather listen to a tight MC that may not kick much knowledge if any at all, such as a T.I. or a Twista.
People confuse "real hip-hop" with being intellectual. Think about it - MCs like A Tribe Called Quest and Common, really never kicked much "knowledge" at all about political issues. They just made lyrical, extremely dope, real hip-hop. But, people throw them in a category of "consciousness."
If you can balance both, I'm all for it. 2Pac was the best at balancing both and it's no coincidence that he's the most beloved rapper ever. In my opinion Dead Prez is currently the best at it. They rap about extremely, politically charged topics, but they do it over dope beats, and they can flat out flow they asses off-plain and simple. If they didn't make entertaining songs, I wouldn't want to hear that shit. I would go pick up a book - or surf the web if I just want some knowledge.
Music is still music and regardless of how much knowledge you kick, you still have to be entertaining - plain and simple.
Some so-called conscious rappers cry about people don't listen to them cause they are too intelligent, when in reality they have no flow, no appeal, sometimes have bullshit beats etc.
Nas is one of my top 3 favorite MCs of all time and he went all out on "Streets Disciple" and gave us tons of mental food to run with. It was by far in my opinion, his most thought-provoking, cerebral CD. Was it his best? No. I like I Am, It Was Written, Illmatic, Stillmatic, hell I guess everyone except Nastradamus better than it. Why? Mostly, the beats didn't stand up.
At the end of the day, hip-hop is a form of MUSIC. Nobody would have gave a fuck when Marvin Gaye said WHAT'S GOIN ON? if the track wasn't right and his vocal skills wasn't on point.
I'll man up and say I didn't buy your album, not because I didn't think it was hot...because I didn't want to play into the nonsense. You said 35000 Sold Was better than 1Mil Laffy Taffy Sold. I say Bullshit...no matter what whitey had somebody to "sambo" for they ass. Why stoop to even mentioning them?? Why even point them out...you're dividing and conquering and there ain't even a whitey around to crack the whip And yeah..using them is a cop out...no one is really blaming t he pioneers of play rap...kid n play.
Lastly...I respect a man who can be that honest...so I'll cop one...but that shit better be hot...cuz Ray Cash is holding a nigga down as of lately...
I'm from ATL, but you're right about Laffy Taffy and I'm sick of hearing elementary dope rhymes from Jeezy. Real artists from the South are overlooked and stereotyped because of the aforementioned acts. I feel theBLUE COLLAR cd. If you're feelin it too, check me out. www.myspace.com/kidsyc
MACKTHEKIFEWHUTEVA,
Get off the pontificating soap box. There have been some intelligent observations on this blog and your loooooonng babbling comments about the mental condition of the masses is boring, especially when most of us are fully aware that Illuminati and its corporate henchmen control the mass media. Nothing New homie.
Fest is like a poor mans Busta Ryhmes, literally! they both can hold their own on stage, and they both have been underrated their whole careers.
Fest is good, and deserves shine, but when your "highly-anticipated and critically-acclaimed" cd is pushed back so many times, its not a good look, people lose interest...peep what happened to Jin, and what will happen to stylez p, and game will be affected by it also.
by the way, d4l sucks ass, I couldnt agree more! and o yeah, Fest, your website "http://www.rhymefest.com/" is not compatible with firefox browsers.
1
"As we all know by now, my highly-anticipated and critically-acclaimed debut album BLUE COLLAR"
And then you have the nerve to critise other rappers for not being humble? Come on you and Kanye need to look up the meaning of the word in a dictionary, Newsflash every rapper thinks his album is the greatest it really means nothing!
And dissing other rappers, man orginal, Laffy taffy has nothing to do with your "good music" yet you have to make a reference to it? talk about insicure, geeze
Almost as bad as mm dissing britney spears....,,,,
o yeah, someone mentioned cross over appeal...try that, pac is a great example, dude rapped about everything, and he was also approachable!
J-Roc...have you even listened to the album??? Not all his songs are battle rap in fact most his songs on the cd have a message. Listen before you talk next time dawg!!!
You got flow. Your image is boring though. Not like u need to be clownin or something like that, but you just seem like a bland guy--no disrespect--u just dont project any coolness to me. but stay true to yourself--u got skillz, but sometimes thats not enough. this blog isnt even cool. its like u feelin sorry for yourself. your album is pretty str8 though, but as i said--sometimes thats not enuff. fans gotta like u as a person--like a nigga u would hang wit. Like Snoop or Nas or Redman.
Hungryseason says... "fans gotta like u as a person--like a nigga u would hang wit."
Dude hit the nail on the head. I say that to people all the time. Hip-hop is the only music like that. We all know R. Kelly was bogus for what he was on, but we'll still listen to him. In hip-hop, if you can't literally see yourself kickin it with a nigga. Like he's not the type of dude you could see in the passenger seat of your car, going shot for shot on a bottle of Hen, or smoking a blunt, or playing Madden, whatever it is you do - you will not buy that niggas CD. That's real talk.
bro truth be told I'm prolly the only cat in texas to purchase your album, not because i'm a fan for the simple fact anything hip hop, country rap tunes, rap whatever the fuck you wanna call it will get bought on sight on tuesday, just because its new regardless who it is, I respect the craft.
So what you sold 15,000 units, you prolly be amazed how many units you did on yousendit, rapidshare, megaupload or whatever people use to download with.
This is what's wrong with niggas today they more concerned bout what the next nigga is doin, when they should be focusin on themselves, Taking a Jab at D4L aint gone make them cats lose any sleep, why give them publicity when you could be marketing yourself in the same breath.
What you want plaques or longevity? I be damn if D4L is worried about longevity like the late great Dj Screw said a long time ago, any nigga can get a plaque, but can you stay relevant down the road.
You need to check game on a rapper from Texas named K-rino, the truest spitter in the whole south been grindin since the 80's..he just can get 9000 records sold but do he try and talk out the side of his neck cappin on other rappers cause he aint shinin, no he the most humble person you'd ever meet, he could've gave up along time ago..I remember when him and Brad(scarface) and big melllo(rip) useta ride the metro bus jus rappin and handing out demo's grinding..he never gave up, he sold his 1000 albums with pride and if you ran up on him saying a certain store didnt have his album, bet money he will pull out 2 fresh copies and give em both to you without even chargin you or thinking twice about it,that tell you he dont give a damn about billboard nor soundscan..boy got fans all over Europe and places some of these trash cats in the game cant even spell. Just charge the 15,000 sold to the game, and quit worryin about people that wont even be relevant this time next year.
11911deadend-
That's some real talk right there. The problem is, Rhymefest is on a major label. Homie that you talking about is independent, I'm assuming. That's why so many artists are screaming and telling niggas to stay independent. If Rhymefest doesn't sell enough, he will go in the hole and eventually get dropped - then he'll be independent against his will. It's like he took out a big ass loan from a loan shark and now they talking about kneecappin em like in the movies if he don't get that bread back to em.
NUMBERS THAT IS ALL PEOPLE CARE ABOUT WHEN THE TIME COME THAT PEOPLE DONT PUT TALENT OR GREATNESS WITH NUMBERS WE WILL HAVE GREAT HIP-HOP. RIGHT NOW IF YOU DONT SELL PEOPLE DONT FEEL YOU...BUT IF YOU START TO BUZZ ALL OF A SUDDEN YOU GOT TEAM MATES AND FAN CLUBS ....PEOPLE ARE AFFRAID TO BE THEMSELVES AND BECAUSE OF THAT IT SHOWS IN HIP-HOP....POINT BLANK
yall smell that? a great publicity stunt by way of blogging on SOHH.com to help increase sales! I aint mad at cha! you could have been a bit more discrete!
Enlightened-
Rino is independent, thats why i mentioned him, he been grindin in Texas before rap-a-lot was formed, before screw moved to houston from smithville, before alot the stuff besides the syrup..lol, came out, he been grinding 25-8, home team wouldnt mess wit em(rap-a-lot,short stop) and the new boys in the game won't even do it and they will tell you he's the coldest rapper in our region, Rhyme got a deal and he came up exactly like K-rino did, K-rino pushin 40 and still hungry like he still 15, but did his homeboy from the ave put him own when got a connect nope, nobody in Houston looked out for the boy, but continued to show them love no hatred or nothin,..ask anybody from texas all the way to ga bout k-rino..bet they say he a beast.
Rhyme should be humble he is in the door like he is now and worry bout putting out quality music instead of what he selling out the gate, kuz its cats like K-rino who still coming out of the fields to the streets tryin to find them a door they can walk into so they can put stuff in the gate, you can only can go word a mouth for so long ..then people will begin to get hoarse
you look broke. look at ya album cover. you look like a nigga dat likes to smoke but don't drop on da sack. like homeboy said earlier a rapper has be like somebody you would kick it wit and you look like a square. you look borin as hell on some please buy my album shit because my life sucks. dats how your album cover looks to me.
For the sake of arguement, the single Laffy Taffy went gold, over 500,000 sold. And the ringtone went platinum. According to my peoples at Atlantic Records.
Let's continue building...and destroying...
First week sales are important to see how you make your next move. Usually whatever you sell your first week, you will sell half of that the second week and it will dwindle down until you release a new single or you get shot. If your second week sales are better than 50% than first week sales, it's an indicator that the project is going to do well.
In Rhymefests' case, it's not about first week sales. It's more about letting people know the album is out. And honestly, Fest needs to pimp the fact that he co-wrote Jesus Walks. Milk it all the way to the bank.
Dare Lewis says...
For the sake of arguement, the single Laffy Taffy went gold, over 500,000 sold. And the ringtone went platinum.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Yeah but what did the ALBUM sell. That's what we're talking about here. Them niggas fell down the billboard chart faster than a muthafucka, and they didn't debut high to begin with. Nobody was buying that album.
The album is hot.
You need to release 'Build Me Up' as a single. Everyone that hears it instanlty falls in love with the funny lyrics and crazy hook. My kids keep your cd in the car because of that track. We love your album.
AHAHHAHAHAH RHYMEFEST IS MAD CUZ HE FLOPPED, WHY U NEED TO EXPLAIN ALL OF THAT.. AHHAHAHAHHA U FLOPPED THATS ALL U FLOPPED , WHO CARES ABOUT GOOD MUSIC, ITS A BUSINESS AND U DONT SELL, GOODBYE
Juve is another case. 400 hundred degress did about 15,000 the first week and to date has sold over 4.5 million. The album is dope, keep doing you.
quite glad u aint moving no units with good album, nigga r u crazy dissing eminem on stage, u battled him; cool; but then u mount a stage and attack him 4 no reason other than publicity now there goes ur white audience(major cd buyers), going round telling ppl u beat slim in a battle was a weak PR move. maybe u shud probably get him on a track and that will boost ur sales.
Okay this is how I look at it. Your first week sale all real, you didn't get help. For all the other artist that put crap out thre and sold more than 75,000 units got help. The mom and pops retail stores scan the shit out of ther CDs. For each unit that is sold on the frist day and extra five is scan. At the end of the day, 40 out of those 48 units sold is bogus. Before the report is sent out to soundscan it's minipulated to show that the sales are real. That's a load of bull. The record companies knows about this and is still supporting. The 15,000 units you sold was real. That's support from all your fans that know who you are and what it's all about. Keep making good music and forget about the Laffy Taffys and all the other crap that is out there. Your star will continue to rise and cuntinue to be "A Leader."
As for J-Roc and all the other haters that don't know good music, envy is not a good thing.
Damn Fest has drawn some serious hate for mentioning those wack ass D4L niggas. Look, 'Fest whole thing isn't about a image you clowns. It's about him being true to self, a real man. Yes he has the best album of the year however I must say that a lot of times, lyrical skill just ain't enough today. Now niggas gotta have some image counseling before they come out now. Dumbest shit I ever heard. You gotta have all the chains, cars, whips & bitches for people to "feel you". That shit ain't real. A lot of these rappers that have that "hard" image are some of the softest niggas ever. Ol' soft ass cheesecake, Teddy Ruxpin bear huggin' ass niggas.
juvenile had HITS on his album, rhymefest ain't got ONE hit on his album. same goes for all the albums dat started off slow ,they had hits. rhymefest ain't got shit, if he had ONE we would've heard it by now.
I copped Blue Collar and it ain't bad. I would have thought that there would have been a bit more substance in it though considering Fest is a smart dude. Still, one of the better artists out in the 06.
RHYMEFEST...if you reading this. i am from MILWAUKEE-WI. so i gotta show you that I-94 LOVE. i write for a magazine on the side, called the The PUB Report. its based out of downtown Chicago. get up with me through my MySpace and have your publicist send me a copy of "Blue Collar" to review. At the very least, I can try to counteract some of the criticism you may be getting for speaking your mind on your blog with a real honest analysis of the album. I heard a few cuts, and what I heard was dope......sadly, it's just that the record-buying public does not really have much interest in lyricists anymore. last i checked...Rass Kass, Little Brother, and AZ had trouble moving units too...and all of them are Hip Hop Quotable worthy. The internet has become a place for ("insert bogus fake name here") to just hate with no one to answer to for it. And I see this blog as turning into one big "Fuck Rhymefest" rant. But have any of you ever made the sacrifices to be in the position he's in? Have any of you had to deal with would-be rappers coming up to you all day long trying to plug "THEIR" unreleased CD while you still trying to get your debut album buzzing??? It is so easy to sit on an Office Depot chair in front of a Compaq and become a RAP CRITIC.....but it's a lot harder to get out here and do what Rhymefest and countless others have sacrificed and tried to make happen. The next person who tells Rhymefest...to "go get a day job" instead of rhyming??? Make sure you tell us where you work @. Because if you aren't a PROFESSIONAL RAPPER....it means that you tryna rib somebody who TOOK THE RISK OF "FAILING"....just so they could have something that meant more to them than a "day job". Holla @ yo boy.

YOU DIDNT SELL PLAINLY BECAUSE YOU COMPLAIN TOO DAMN MUCH ABOUT YOUR RAP PEERS....IM NOT SURE IF YOUR A RAPPER OR SOME KINDA SPY INFULTRATIN THE RAP MUZIK BIZ TO SABATOGE THE CAREERS OF MANY....I THINK THE HIP HOP IS DEAD AND WACK THEORY IS REMINISCENT OF THE DOMINO AFFECT.....ITS JUST CONTAGIOUS.......PLEASE STOP CRYIN ABOUT THE STATE OF HIP HOP...EVERYTHING EVOLVES AND THEN RETURNS BACK TO ITS ORIGINS(I.E. COMPARE NEW YORK/DOWN SOUTH MUCIS TODAY AND 10 YEARS AGO, THERES A MAJOR DIFFERENCE)...YOUR MUSIC AT THIS POINT IN TIME IS NOT SO MUCH AS TO BE CONSIDERED ADVANCED IN COMPARISON TO LAFFY TAFFY AND OTHER CLUB ISH OUT NOW, BUT MORE ALONG THE LINES OF IRRELEVANT (NO DISRESPECT) BECAUSE SUBSTANCE IN MUSIC IS CLEARLY NOT A ISSUE RIGHT NOW. THE UNCONSIOUS CONSUMER HAS BEEN TOLD THAT THEY DONT WANT TO HEAR GOOD SONGS AND LYRICS, THEY WANT A CLUB BANGER, PACKAGED WITH A REPETATIVE HOOK AND DANCE TO GO ALONG WITH IT, AND YOU HAVE A BANGER. UNFORTUNATELY FOR ARTISTS LIKE YOU, YOUR MUSIC ISNT TYPICAL.
yeah the game is funny. One part of you definately wants to blow up big and get rich and then there's another part of you that's only trying to put out classic material and the artform is the most important thing. I for one, always believe in art over money but of course you wanna get rich. who doesn't? It's that perfect balance that is so great. 11911deadend im in houston....my boy was telling me about K-RINO and the nigga is real...i'll admit it. one of the releast out of houston no doubt. The type of feeling his album gives is a real uncut reality feel. Really tight. I'm currently working on material...if i was to blow i know i'll try to holla at him.
Damm G you catchin tongue lashes like a muthafucka. 1st and foremost I got the album and it's banging. The production is good shitz, and you speaking that lit. A lot of it do go over muthafukas headz like seagulls lookin for something to eat but, in the case of your concern about others in the biz wont help push the album pass the level of your expectations or J-Records as well. I feel that one comment left by HP-55th, when you act like you way past the realization of acknowledging people who try to show you some luv, you just defeat the purpose of reciprocating that reflection. Fest, keep doing what you do brotha, and use what's being provided to you as a lesson learned, and turn it into their problem addressed.
What up doe?
Havent heard anything but "Brand New" really. Thought it was pretty tight. Actually im lying, I heard more on AOL soundcheck or something of that nature and thought some of it was nice. I really thought about picking up the album, and still might have to make that move after I was in Indy during the Fourth holiday I think, and you were there showing love to some folks you used to kick it with. The only two cents I will add is, stop mentioning others, whether you like them or not. I dont think its "Hating" more so than excuses being made. Secondly, work on the image a bit. You do seem a little bland. You talking about battling Marshall from years ago. My best friend managed D12, and when you went at Em, I was thinking, "Why?" You have no reason to other than being bitter about losing. Duide was in a zone and comes from a long line of spitters from here in Detroit. It is what it is.. And it's in the past. A friend of mine told me, dont live in the past, worry about creating your future. Go out, do the tour, talk to people, let them know your more than the dude who co/wrote Jesus Walks... Let them know why you should be around. I dont think your movement will be won on a major label.. You might end up hustling again by yourself or with a smaller movement, but if music is what you want then you may have to get used to that. I think some forget, music is not just an auto to making millions. Most people make millions from things they love to do. Keep loving it, and stop worrying about others, and it might make you the rich man you seek to be, cause I can tell you do want it, plus you may be able to do you for the most part while making that doe. See you in Detroit homie. One.
U need to stick to moppin floors u washed up mc/janitor. This dude look like a dirty seagull...on some real stuff.
Why do you think you're so nice...Get off your own dick duke....Believe it or not there are ALOT more mc's and entertainers out there that make better 'songs' or are waaaaay more 'lyrical' The problem is that you can't make a song to save your life and your lyrics are barely above par....I guarantee this clown will go brick every album for the rest of his career. Even kanye can't save this jiffy lube mechanic
I've never commented on a blog but listen, I have to agree with j roc on this one because he said what i was thinking. bruh, yo shit is wack, personally. On top of that, how could you cop out by saying some irrelevent shit about laffy taffy. i don't like d4l's music that much, but I have to shoot down your wack ass reference to them. These guys are ex dope dealers who have found an outlet through dance or party music (whatever you want to call it) and have had some success at doing so. So who the fuck are you to hate on them when your 5,000 copies a week will soon decline to 0 copies a week and you will eventually end up selling copper or plastic. I downloaded your fuckin album (because it was available, not because I wanted it) and it sucked. And what the fuck does blue collar mean? Rap about assembly lines and loading Fedex trucks if your gonna call your album blue collar. For the dick riders commenting, tell this man the truth and stop ridin his dick cause he's obviously a hater. Oh yeah, And its funny I found out who you were because there's was an article about you co-writing JESUS WALKS (Which I have to admit is great song) so how come your first single wasn't something along those line? "Brand New" Dawg, c'mon. You might as well had not even took credit for co-writing Jesus Walks even you were gonna drop that shit!!!!!
P.S.-U A House Nigga That Make House Music. Oh Yeah, First Week Sales do matter for artists like yourself, simple as that, so you're fucked!
I think too many people hatin here. Blue Collar gets Top 5 albums released this year so far. Anf I don't think he was dissin D4l just comparing the quality vs the one hitters. Kinda like comparing Applebees to Mortons (if you didn't get it you shouldn't) I like how dude said that this blog ain't cool??? Whats cool a ***** getting on the radio and Talking about a ****** he just droped from his group??? Ayo fest I don't buy albums I burn them straight up cause half the shit garbage and I ain't spending $10 on a shitty CD. I bought your shit. My mans was like this is the shit to tget and I copped it.
TO ANSWER THE QUESTION DIRECTLY--If u put out a hit, u still got a chance to blow. However, with a major, first week sales seem very important and it may be difficult to bounce back. FLAT OUT--"Brand New"--I heard it, but it was not strong enuff to make me wanna cop ur album. Kanye shined more than u to an extent on that one. was OK and it had Kanye, but that did what it did. PICK A SOLID(something memorable) SINGLE--GET IT TO RADIO and u might have a shot. Also as I said before, it may be impossible, but you need a background/character, you just seem bland--lacking charisma--that certain something that niggas in the rap game w/ longevity have. Scarface's, Nas's, Jay-Z's, Ludacris's, Too Short's, 2Pac. Them niggas got character first. They got the words, but niggas like them for them--not just the lyrics they spit. Your rhymes gotta not just be clever, but also relatable to niggas everday lives(noty in an extremely political way, but on an understandable level)--listen to a Biggie album. The nigga was clever, genious damn near wit his wordplay, but still on a street level niggas could relate. And Big just seemed like a cool nigga that kicks it wit niggas. U lack that(to me at least). Like Tribe said, HIP HOP IS BEATS, RHYMES AND LIFE--u lack the LIFE in your imagery. You got the other two down pretty good though, but the LIFE is essential.
Anyway DROP A HOT SINGLE or els, just wait till u get another shot/deal/album whatever.
THIS IS A NICE ARTICLE AND I DON'T THINK YOUR FIRST WEEK SALES WAS A FAILURE AT ALL BECAUSE LOOK WHAT HAPPEN TO AKON AND LYFE JENNINGS....THEY DID THE 4 INGREDIENTS LISTED IN THIS ARTICLE AND LOOK WHAT HAPPEN ....ITS EASIER FOR A SINGER THEN A RAPPER BUT 15K IS DECENT FOR SOMEONE WHO HASN'T RECEIVED THE RIGHT EXPOSURE YET
YOU JUST HAVE TO BE EXPOSED WITH GUEST APPEARANCES AND SHOWS LIKE THE ARTISTS LISTED ABOVE
AND DROP AS MANY ALBUMS AS POSSIBLE BECAUSE NO MATTER HOW UNDERRATED YOU ARE SOME1 IS LISTENING !!!
KEEP DOING YA THING RHYMEFEST AND I WILL CHECK THE ALBUM OUT NOW !!
SHOUT OUT 2 MY BOY ROB @ CORNERSTONE !!
There are so many ignorant people in Hip-Hop! We always say "keep it real" but when some one does they have idiots throwing stones. The laffy taffy reference could have been made about 98% of Hip-Hop. There is so much garbage out there that it is ridiculous. Why can't 'Fest drop the album that he wants to put out? Why does he have to have a "radio" friendly album or song? One of the problems with Hip-Hop today is people are not being themselves. There is absolutely NO originality. And years ago you had to have that. Just about everything out could have been done by the next man....I can go on forever, one last thing Merciless you're an idiot! Just because D4L were drug dealers (Aren't all rappers) doesn't mean they can drop this garbage and be accepted. One day Hip-Hop, with artist like 'Fest, will get back to respectability
Welcome to pergatory. I don't mean this maliciously. In the grand scheme of mainstream music (can't call all of what's being played on the radio hip-hop and what's being marketed as quality) as some bloggers have mentioned, you don't fit. You have substance; that's your flaw. That's good. We need more artist to go against the grain and say something more than what's been said by a hundred other artists already (guns, drugs, and violence can go so far). You're position is somewhere between Kanye West and the rest of the pop culture club and artists like Little Brother, everyday people with a message for the masses. Choose your path wisely because the public will never let you go back.
The album has it's high points and low points (for commecial success "Stick" or "All Girls Cheat" f/ Mario would push you to the pop culture club...if you want to go that route). As a whole, it's the rookie album. Live and learn as it apparently seems you have accepted.

Man music is music buy what you like, why does everyone have to be hip hop, or up north, or down south, why is there limitations. We should be able to appreciate all forms of RAP music, whethter its hip hop, sing along, gangsta, snap music, Hyphy, whatever STOP HATING because your not selling maybe you need to broaden your musical horizons and you can come up with a hit. I tell you this I rather be a 1 hit wonder then be a person heard of, thats nice, but never made a hit song. I take being hammer or vanilla ice over RHYMEFEST..for that paper sssshhhh888tttt as long as you dont sell your soul, i dont think they have.
Ryhmefest, I think you are DOPE, you have what it takes, forget the haters, keep doing what you do, I think it would have been a bad move to sign with arrogant Kanye West, yes he is talented, but he seems like a control freak. I coped blue collar and I loved it !!! keep doing what you do, and you are right LAFFY TAFFY IS WACK !!! keep real rap skillz alive, peace !!
cop little btrother the minstrel show cuz that alum is dope forreal;
Dont trip famo-u know real niggaz still appreciate the real shit!! Of course Chicago is gonna dickride after everyone else says "Fest shit is hot!!" I fuck wit Twone Gabz so i been down with you(and Ye is lucky he got you to write 4 him...) HOLD YA HEAD!!
man my nigg u jus gotta realize that the times have changed. shit man i like your shit but i copped it bootleg like im sure alot of people who are fans of your music did. u wont sell a bunch of records off top cuz the people who consume and buy the albums mostly arent in your demographic of whos listenin to your shit. i know it sucks but it aint 95 anymore..or even 98' for that matter. the dope emcee wont ever get the recognition anymore and never prolly will w/o a huge push from labels and a commercial hit.
You wack as hell nigga. Quit while u ahead. You gonna be Blue Collar when you baggin groceries at the local Foodmart, cause your rhymes are shyt. What are you gonna do diss eminem again? Everybody not meant to be a rapper, you were meant to sell used shoes or drive a bus. First week does matter, flop nigga.....floppity flop flop.
Wow so numbers make an album good? Go listen to your trash cent and your trash southern crap. I guess Illmatic is trash too huh? it didnt sell alot at all when it came out. Must be nice to ride the dick of trash.
Rgymefest you suck plain and simple you suck go hang yourself you'll be doing us a favor T.I. king of the south
excuse me RHYMEFEST your name even sucks you aree the lamest human on the planet!!!!!
RhymeFest from watching from the outside Brand New looked like a Kanye Song and you was featured.....U were also doing alot of talking instead of letting the music speak...We keep saying you nasty and tight which u maybe but we ain't heard it...U had 1 song Brand New and credit for writing Jesus Walks but we ain't heard nuthin to prove you as nice as u say u r...But homie Self Promotion is the Best Promotion...Look at Juelz Santana put up his own money to Make his own Video......Keep Grindin..................MYSPACE.COM/BOTTLESBABY
The fastest way to sell records today is to get shot. For every shot you take, you can potentially move 750,000 units. If you die, you'll be DIAMOND in no time. And if your killer is still running around free, you'll become G.O.A.T. in your state AND your fellow rap buddies who did one or two tracks with you will put out those tracks on their albums and pretend you was the nicest nigga ever to touch a mic.
So what's it gonna be?
It's not how many units you move is the first week, it the quality of the music and how you grow on the chart. I bought several (10) copies of you CDs to give as gifts to my friends and they all loved it. We all voted that the best song on there was Bullet and we all agree that it should have been you second single. Maybe radio might had a problem playing it, but look what it did for "Jesus Walk". Our next pick was Devil's Pie and Stick. To tell you the truth we love the entire album.
Everyone who are saying you have no talent, you album sucks, and shit like that are the one who is mad at you for mentioning D4L bitchass laffy taffy song. What they didn't do was read and comprehend what you were trying to say.
Keep doing what you're doing and that is make good music. You and absolute genious when it comes to your lyrics and my crew and I love you out here on the westcoast.
I wish there was a half way point between good music and good promotion. Unfortunately the good shit doesn't get promoted right and the shitty stuff get's pushed harder. Granted it's a business, so your first week sales should be important. You are making and trying to SELL good music. Therefore, if you know your product is good there should be no reason why it shouldn't do well with the right people behind you. If you don't get the right promotion, or don't have the right people behind you... then you're in the wrong place. I'm a fan of rhymefest and dudes like Lupe and Kanye... dude's who make good music. If kanye can go platinum and I'm sure Lupe will if his shit doesn't leak three more times before it drops... then there's no reason Rhymefest shouldn't have had better first week sales.

i love this album.... you have put out a great album in my opinion. keep doing your thing man. "brand new" is bangin. i always play this album everywhere.
Like Black Thought said, true orignal art is timeless while songs just fade. If your not rhyming about your true thoughts your lyrics are adopted.
" I Am in the music industry and have been for a long time, i can say flop because a star sell units. not bull shit 1 mil sales but real units."
WTF??? 1.1 mil of ANYTHING is doing well (as long as you didnt spend a mint in research and devel) that type of logic is STR8 Wetarded...what are you a street team poster or sumthin?
That fever wasn't your hottest shit. Brand new was 2 years old. i think you shoulda went with Stick. My girl is the manager at Cowboys on 167th. You need 2 get some of the strippers 2 dance 2 that shit. You got underground and commercial hits, the label just picked the wrong records. It's some shit on that album thouht that ppl need 2 here. Holla at me, we can do an uncut video whenever. I know these hoes personally. It would be nothing.

This blog is intriguing....I read almost every post...Interesting...Anyway Fest if you are reading this, This is Precise from Nubearth...The album is tight...later for these cats
i copped blue collar on itunes, because i been waiting on something form you....and being a CHIguy, i have to support my city.....and the album is really is dope...there is some much real talk on there..from bullet..to all I do...all girls cheat....that line about borrowing from kanye.on the gas bill that is some real nigga shit....cause that shit happens in life....the production was dope too...mark ronson showed his ass....and I.m glad you did it it own your own....Ye is my mans..but you gotta make your own name fam....and as far as the d4l....i hate that shit too..THATS RIGHT I SAID HATE..SO THAT MAKES ME A HATER....CAUSE THAT LAFFY TAFFY BULLSHIT...IS MINDLESS MUSIK....CAUSE I LOVE SEEING CHICKS SHAKE THAT SHIT TOO..BUT I DON'T NEED A MOTHERFUCKING SINGING ABOUT THAT SHIT.....SO FUCK D4L AND THE REST OF THAT BULLSHIT SNAPPING FINGERS SHIT........
I'm gonna be honest, I didn't cop your album. In fact, I didn't know when you were about to drop. I saw "Brand New" on 106 and Park when it premiered and I never saw you again. The same situation happened with Method Man and The Roots. Not that many people knew when they were going to drop and had to rush to buy/download copies. You weren't being promoted properly at all. You should have released a single about 2 months before your album dropped or something to get your song and name in rotation. I'm sorry htat you flopped, but I must have read 10 magazine reviews that called your album "a great CD".You don't have the album sales, but you made up for it with acclaim. Keep at it and you might get that number one spot. Remember, Jay-Z didn't get hot until his third album dropped. Nas didn't sell until his second album dropped. Keep at the grind!!!
Stay true to yourself...make quality music. Please never sell out for record sales!!!!!!
Look man I thought Blue Collar was a DOPE album....But there were songs that could've been eliminated. You released all the wrong singles. "Dynomite" and "Devil's Pie" should've been the singles not "Brand New" and "Fever" which I thought weer two of the weaker songs on the album. "Hot Stick" was terrible man. And "Chica-GoRillas" Had a great beat and your verse was dope but hte guest appearances were terrible. You should've had Lupe Fiasco and Common as guests and it would've truly been Chicago's finest. I wanted to ask you to, what happenned to the song that had "I feel like crying, I feel like dying" in the hook. I heard that on a music TV channel in like February and thats what got me started on you. That song definitely should've been on there over "Hot Stick". On your next album you should follow up the blue print of songs like "Dynomite" "Tell the Story" and "Devil's Pie". Those songs are the type of music I love and thought were true hip-hop gems. "Bullet and a Target" was great too. I'm a HUGE fan of yours man, don't worry about record sales do that hip-hop do Chicago right.
Much Luv man,
I'll be first in line for your sophmore release!!!
