Random dude at Linkin Park Event

It's sad to say, but these events usually have nothing to do with the artists. We actually pay attention to the artists because it's an indication of what the crowd is going to be like. For instance, ya'll ain't about to catch me at no D-Block shows. Dudes' concerts are usually doo rag conventions held at SOB's or sweat box clubs.

As mentioned in previous entries, there's something about the Ecko Showroom aka Studio 54 in New York City. Even non Hip-Hop events like Linkin Park's album release party pop off.
Considering that the event took place on a Friday (May 11), an unusual industry party day, the venue was expected to be crowded. Not the case. The Ecko Showroom was busy with attendees but still allowed plenty of elbow room. Regardless, Linkin Park didn't show up to their own event. I mean, we saw Matt Pinfield and LP's Chester Bennington outside before the evening began, but none of them dudes were to be found during the event. No performance, no pit stop, nothing. Did we care? Hell nah! The joint was vodka open bar. Does this guy look like he cared about LP not being there.

We like Linkin Park. I mean, they ain't the Beattles or nothing, but they dope. Anyway, I'd like to thank them for holding a dope album release party.

KeKe Wyatt on stage at Room Service (NYC)

I can usually tell early on when an event is going to be classic. I usually just walk in the venue, turn to SOHH On The Scene Model Sam Ed and Mark and say, "It's a wrap. This joint is gonna be crazy." I'm usually on point, just like I was for TVT Records' Soul Music Showcase featuring KeKe Wyatt and Teedra Moses at Room Service in New York City last night (May 10).

The Birthday Boys Rashaun Hall (Giant Magazine Online) and Joe Wiggins (TVT Records)

The venue was at capacity and the free Gin & Juice flowing. But back to KeKe Wyatt. In case you forgot, she's the soul sister who had a couple of hits with Avant a few years back. Unfortunately, as talented as she is, many may remember her for stabbing her former husband rather than her rich vocals. I always knew she could sang, but had no clue she was that bad (meaning good). Straight up dime piece. KeKe, you can stab me anytime. And you know what, I would "stab" you too. Both performers gave standout performances.

As usual Sam Ed mingled and added shots to his already impressive resume. Inexplicably, some daydreamers are still trying to talk slick. Anytime, man. Anytime! I leave you with more flicks from the event and a special bday shout to Rashaun and Joe. Til next time.

Mind you that was during Eve's short hair days. My cousin Mayhem would disagree. After all the man has once rhymed that he'd "eat her pu**y with some relish." Fast forward several years and Eve's look has changed. The hair is longer and the clothing more "grown up" as she said. I had the privilege of seeing it for myself during an interview with Miss Jeffers at the Geffen offices in New York City earlier today (May 10).

Boy was my cousin off. She don't look like no Canibus. She's actually pretty cute.
She got the nice teeth with the slight overbite like Kelita Smith ("The Bernie Mac Show"). I always found that sexy for some reason. Fabolous has never really moved me. And after a first listening of his fourth album, From Nothin' Into Somethin', I doubt I'll ever budge. I have my personal Fab favorites ("Breathe") and I enjoyed some singles ("Can't Let You Go" and "So Into You"). But for the most part, Fab just sounds unmotivated, like someone is forcing him to rap. He has definitely shown slick wordplay over the years, but he's gotten kinda dry as of late.
After seeing his album pushed back several times, it finally looks like it'll hit shelves June 12. Def Jam finally held a listening session for From Nothin' To Somethin' at Sony Studios last night (May 9). I swear, outside from what appeared
to be Loso's entourage, the reception to the record seemed lukewarm
throughout the CD.

Attendees gave courtesy nods, but they seemed too busy looking at Jay-Z and L.A. Reid to really pay attention to the record. I did what I could for pics, but the Def Jam employees weren't too happy with me flashing cameras on their bosses.

Red Cafe also made an appearance

Aside from the joints that already leaked, there isn't much to look forward to. "Return Of The Hustle," "Make Me Better" and "Real Player Like" featuring Lloyd are solid songs, but overall the record is so formulaic. Beats by Timbaland, Polow Da Don and guest spots by Jay-Z and Young Jeezy with Ne-Yo and Lil' Mo on the hooks. Then again, I guess that's what Fab's albums have been all along. There are also featured artists on 13 out of 19 songs. In my opinion, this isn't any worst or better than Ghetto Fabolous or Real Talk, so Fab fans will probably think the CD is fire. I wonder if Fab can do numbers in today's climate though. People are hating "Diamonds," but loving "Make Me Better." What do you guys think? Will Fab do numbers? If Ne-Yo, who presently has a deafening buzz, only sold 251,000 units in his first week, what can Fab be expected to sell?

I'm in no way a Jeezy fan. I mean, I enjoyed Thug Motivation 101, but aside from the singles and a few album cuts, I'm not too fond of The Inspiration. I thought I grew tired of the triumphant "Trap Star"-esque instrumentals. Obviously I was wrong. I'm usually front and center when it comes to Jeezy critiques. I complain about his lack of lyricism, bash what he stands for, complain about his glorification of the trap and have little regards for his (though good) song making ability. With that in mind I headed to USDA's listening session at Sony Studios in NYC last night (May 7).

Blood Raw and Slick Pulla

As it's usually the case for most clique albums, I expected to dose off through tracks and dismiss the additional group members as gun...I mean weed carriers. I don't know much about Slick Pulla and Blood Raw and can't tell their vocals apart. But they played their positions well throughout the CD and probably won't make listeners reach for the skip button much. But let's be clear. This is essentially a Jeezy album. It sounds like Snowman just crafted an album and left holes for Blood Raw and Slick Pulla to spit 16s.

Oh and by the way, Al Sharpton and Russell Simmons are wasting their time. I wish progressive content got more exposure just like the next man, but people are about two catchy singles away from forgetting about the Don Imus controversy. Expectedly, Cold Summer has its share of "Nappy Headed Hoes" and "Ashy Toe Bitches" references. But the songs are so well packaged (sick beats, addictive hooks) that no one is likely to notice. Look out for the lead single, "Corporate Thuggin" as well as standouts like the "Get It Up" and "Live My Life" featuring Scar (Outkast's "Morris Brown"). While The Inspiration is collecting dust at the crib, I'm looking forward to hearing Cold Summer again. It ain't just me.

Fab making a pit stop at USDA listening session

President Sean Carter and L.A. Reid definitely seem to be betting on USDA for the summer. The two Def Jam executives attended the session and continually snapped their necks during every track. Fabolous, who is holding his own listening session at Sony tonight (May 8) also made a brief appearance. I now leave you with Cold Summer's Track listing. And big shouts to Nigel at Realtalkny.net for the photos. Til next time.

USDA- COLD SUMMER - “Focus”

-“White Girl”
-“Get It Up”

SOHH's resident Player Watch columnist Janee Bolden hit up Red Lemon's 1st anniversary party at the Blue Monkey in Los Angeles last night (April 19). The event was co-sponsored by King Magazine. In case you aren't familiar with Red Lemon(like me), it's a trendy clothing store in LA. Word is celebs like Lil Jon and Ludacris are part of the clientele. Anyhow, Kel Mitchell(Good Burger) was apparently the biggest celeb at the event. Janee's verdict? "The party was cool." Perhaps it had something to do with lack of an open bar.

SOHH was definitely on the scene at Arena in NYC last Tuesday (April 17). Me, Goya and SOHH On The Scene model Sam Ed came out for Cuervoton, a search for the next generation of urban Latin artists. The venue was quite packed. Shoot, even Jesus was in there.
Out of four contestants, Patty Duke, a dope emcee who effortlessly weaved through english and spanish lyrics, appeared to be the crowd favorite. All I remember from the other contestants is that I had to text Cuervo 1, 2 and 4 to vote for them. Duke eventually won.

The rest of the evening was had solid performances from Joell Ortiz and reggaetonero Notch. I left before getting the chance to see Pitbull, Nina Sky and Tru Life perform.

One thing is sure, the Latin music scene is one to be reckoned with. Similar to the south, the support system appears to be pretty strong. Showcase attendees are usually trigger happy with the boos, but not at the Cuervoton.

Novo don't need to be hosting no functions though. It's a damn lounge. I mean, why would you have a guest list of over 500 people for a hallway venue?
Despite the lack of elbow room, there was a good atmosphere in there. The bartenders were fast and the eye candy sweet. I actually had an interesting episode when waiting for refills on line. With about ten people in front of us, this chick tried doing the whole, "excuse me, coming through" bid as she made her way to the bar. At first I jokingly asked her, "you're not trying to skip us are you?" She replied with a smile and kept it moving. Two minutes later, I noticed them at the front of the line reading the Bacardi menu and trying to get the bartenders' attention. "Excuse me. Are you guys waiting for drinks," I asked. "If so, we've been on line for a minute if you don't mind." They immediately took they ass to the back of the line. Come to find out, my boy John and I ended up getting the last drinks of the open bar. I handed one to Roni and rejoined the rest of the fellas. Good times. Bobbito showed up sort of late while Miss Info and Def Poet Lemon also stopped by. I'd have plenty of photos for you, but the power button on my digital camera is stuck. Coincidentally, SOHH On The Scene Model Sam Ed didn't make it that night. I wonder if it means anything.

Sam also didn't make it to Q-Tip's surprise celebration this weekend (April 14). And neither did I. It was star-studded from what I hear. Lance Armstrong and David Arquette were some of the few celebs on hand.

I really gotta fix this camera!

So I'm on aim complaining to a certain someone at Interscope about not being invited to Common's listening session for Finding Forever when he tells me there's one going on at noon (April 9). The time was roughly 11:15 a.m. So I hop on the train and make my way to Sony Studios only to see a bunch of elderly women in the studio's lobby when I get there. Ok, ok...they weren't that old. We'll call them mature. I mean, it was me and a dozen 30 something year-old women. Upon inquiring I found out that most in attendance were from publications like Details and such. So I decided that if anybody asked me what outlet I was from, I would tell them I'm from Cosmopolitan Magazine. I never did get a chance to lie.

Carl (Cosmopolitan) with Common... lol

After everybody munched on Carribean cuisine, Com wasted no time introducing tracks from his 7th LP. It turns out that Kanye West is making Finding his homage to J Dilla on the production end. Interestingly, besides "Heartbreak," I didn't find too many tracks to be Dilla-esque. Nonetheless, the production was superior as expected. Ye produced the bulk of it while will.i.am, Dilla and Devo Springsteen all contributed one. Be on the lookout for the West-produced "The People," "Black Maybe" and will's "I Want You" among many other standouts. Off the first listen, I'm tempted to say that Be was the better album, but some of my colleagues (not the Detail ladies) disagreed with me, so we shall see when it drops on July 10th.

Several hours later, it was back to Sony for DJ Khaled's listening. You knew the session would be entertaining from Khaled's opening declarations. "People be thinking this is a DJ album putting songs together, no," Khaled pointed out. "This is like Big, Pac, Nas. My shit is concepts. We the best." You gotta love that guy. Every song was introduced with something like, "this song is me, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Fat Joe and Trick Daddy. It's...it's big. We the best."

DJ Khaled at Sony Studios

I can't believe dude introduced a song entitled "I'm So Hood" right after one entitled, "I'm From The Ghetto." Other innovative titles included, "The Streets," "No Hook" and "Bone Thugs." Yes! Jadakiss and Pitbull were also among the frequent collaborators and overall, the music did live up to its predecessor.

Bun B during SOHH Focused interview

I don't mean skill-wise. Don't get it twisted. If Bun B "ain't nice, then he gotta be nasty" on the mic. But I'm talking about him as a person here.

I've encountered some cool stars working in this business. Young Buck has to be my favorite. He shows the kid love everytime. Paul Wall, Common, Melyssa Ford, Remy Ma and DJ Drama are also among some of the coolest people I've had the pleasure to meet. But I doubt any of them are as nice as Bun.

Now Bun, I know you read the site and may just stumble on this entry so let me stress that this is written respectfully. Me and Sohh On The Scene model, Sam Ed headed down to the Jive Records office to interview UGK yesterday (April 5). Once there, we met up with David from Jive, headed up to the
fifth floor, but inexplicably ended up on the first. When the elevator doors opened, there he was. Bun B, accompanied by a lovely lady and a dude sporting a UGK shirt.

No waiting for Bun as expected with most rappers. He was on time. As he and his people stepped into the elevator, Kanye's line off The College Dropout's "Last Call" crept in my head. "Nice as Bun B when I met him at the Source Awards/the girl he had with him- ass could have won the Horse Awards." I
hadn't interacted with him yet, so my mind was elsewhere. Was that the lady Kanye talked about on the song? My dumb ass immediately whispered to Sam Ed, "College Dropout." He then smirked to let me know he was thinking the exact same thing. I really wanted to confirm my suspicion, but I wouldn't look out of respect. So I guess I'll never find out. But I'm drifting here. Bun politely introduced himself upon entering, let everybody out of the elevator first and later opened the conference room door for us. Shoot! The most positive, ashy barefoot "conscious rappers" wouldn't have opened no door for my ass. Besides that, Bun didn't say or do anything over the top. He just struck me as a genuine, well-mannered dude. Unfortunately, Pimp C never made it, but we're hoping to catch him today. On that note, I gotta flip Ye's line and put it in a rhyme of my own.

"Nice as Bun B, when I met him at the Jive office..."

I'm gonna need help on this one. How should I flip this?

SOHH tagged along BET for its annual Spring Bling in Riviera Beach, FL this past weekend. It was pretty much what I expected; run-ins with stars, a whole lot of skin and people wilding out…in a good way that is. With the exception of a young lady fainting Saturday afternoon, the weekend pretty much took place without a hitch. At least I hope so. We left Sunday morning before the last day festivities even started.

Models leaning with it

Though the initial lineup appeared slim, last minute additions boosted Spring Bling’s roster. Mims, Rich Boy, Young Jeezy, Young Buck, Jim Jones, Chamillionaire, DJ Unk, Marques Houston, Omarion and Lloyd were among the acts to perform before the “college” crowd. Although, I suspect that a very large portion of the attendees have never seen the inside of a college classroom.

Anyway, with only two days to work, we went right to it, gathering folks to participate in our MOTS(man on the streets) segments. First off, “Spring Break Confessions.” Upon being asked to share their craziest Spring Break hook up stories, women continually plead the fifth while dudes were more than willing to boast for the SOHH cam. Obviously, somebody's lying. Here are some pics. Ya'll tell me who would fail the polygraph test.

Nelly Furtado wasn't there, but Justin Timberlake and Nicole Scherzinger, formerly of the Pussycat Dolls were both in attendance for Timbaland's Shock Value listening party at PM in NYC last night(March 22).

I can't even lie, JT really dissapointed me. Since his ass cried on MTV's "Punk'd" a few years back, I expected dude to be a bit more humble. He wouldn't take pics with anybody, not even chicks. Truthfully, I'm starting to think that dude may just be half of a prick. Nicole on the other
hand, was sweet, always accepting photo requests despite her cock blocking asss bodyguard. The following photo is the closest I could get. Hopefully, Lexi will come through with better pics.

Nicole Scherzinger

Timbo, though he didn't seem too enthused, did oblige requests and gets point for it.
DJ Clue and Farnsworth Bentley also made brief appearances. Danja Handz must have been somewhere in the building, but I didn't see him, or perhaps didn't recognize him.

Timbo and Timberlake

The VA producer (Timbo that is) popped up around 10 p.m. and introduced his record, playing the entire album in one continuous sequence. "Give It To Me" is a monster smash, which is more than can be said for the rest of the CD. In all fairness, I need to give it the headphone listen, plus me and the rest of the drunk ass partygoers weren't paying much attention. But still, considering the music Timbo has been producing in the past year, I was expecting at least a few tracks to catch my ear. Overall, the evening was ok, nothing special. Thank God for that open bar though.

By the way, I'm not photogenic, so don't expect to see too many pics with my ass in it. There's actually not a single one in this particular entry. Besides, I'm too busy snapping pics.
Ok, enough of this. I gotta pack my bags. I'm heading to West Palm Beach,FL
for BET's Spring Bling this weekend. So I leave you with pics of the
evening featuring SamEd, one of SOHH On The Scene's new models. See you
next week.

There's something about that Marc Ecko Showroom. It has to be more than the open bar. Negros would still show up in mass numbers if G-Child from the (white) Rapper Show was performing.

Consequence threw his album release party for his long delayed debut album, Don't Quit Your Day Job at the showroom in Manhattan, NY last night (March 15). The Queens emcee only sold 7,000 copies in its first week according to Nielsen's Soundscan, but you'd think he sold 300k out of the gate the way the venue was packed. Though the flyer advertised "performance by Consequence and the G.O.O.D Music family," partygoers were skeptical early on. "G.O.O.D Music family? Kanye and Common ain't showing up," some whispered early in the evening.

Suspicions appeared to be confirmed when Cons appeared on stage with Really Doe and GLC with the evening winding down. Cons and GLC sure came a long way with their stage show. The bunch was actually quite live while performing songs off Day Job, including the lead single, "Callin Me."Little do you know, Ye popped up on stage halfway through Cons' set to perform "Good,Bad, The Ugly." By that time, most in attendance were drunk out of their brain, rhyming along to every single rhyme. The self-proclaimed G.O.O.D crew then went through favorites like "Grammy Family," "Gone" and Ye's "Throw Some D's" remix before closing the set out with "Spaceship." ...classic!
