Caught On Tape: Lil' Wayne Cranks That Soulja Boy!

Posted on February 25, 2008 4:38 PM

Who would expect to find Lil Wayne here?

Yet, here he is, in Newark, New Jersey’s seedy Symphony Hall Theater, home to local talent shows and Mama plays (“Three Ways To Get A Husband” starts here Feb. 28, if you’re into that sort of thing).

With the police in full-force outside, best believe the Lil’ fella fired up the stage right in Red Man’s back yard. And I’ll be damned if SOHH wasn’t there (sans Kevlar) to catch the Weezer ripping a few hot lines and attempting to Crank That Soulja Boy for all of Brick City to see. You don’t have to take our word for it, our trusty Cyber-Shot doesn’t lie. See for yourself.

But don’t think you can go to a Lil' Wayne show, slip through the metal detector, plop down in your seat just in time to see Wayne make his way to the stage. Nah. Not here. Newark stages belong to the locals. So, before you get to Wayne, you gotta give a few lesser-knowns a chance.

Like this guy, O-Coop, who came out while the audience was awaiting the Weeze.

Not sure if this was a group or a solo artist and a hype man. They weren't offensive at first, but no new artist--whose album no one has heard--should hit the stage for 20 minutes. Most big-record-having rappers shouldn't try this. Less is more.

Then this kid--Young Jinsu

Yet another “Young” in the game, Young Jinsu is what happens if you give Bow Wow a Chris Brown mask. (I'm told he has recorded with Bow Wow on a record called "The Price of Fame.") Had a lot of 106th & Park-styled confidence. But it’s hard to tell how good the music is when you’re hearing it for the first time live—muffled mics, fuzzy bass, etc...

And then, these poor guys, Front Page, hit the stage.

By the time it was their turn, the audience was chanting “Weezy, Weezy.” Angie Martinez kept coming out promising that if you just hold on, Wayne will be out, you’ll get your prize. So, although these guys had the most substance, folks weren’t tryna hear no positive rap getting in the way of their duffle bag boy.

And then (drum roll please) Angie Martinez announces this…

Pandemonium--kinda--as Wayne begins his set.

Ah, yes. Here ya go. The little duffle bag one, counts all day like a clock on the wall.

By the way, this event was sponsored by this organization promoting "Stop Shooting." Kinda ironic that Wayne, aka "Shooter," is headlining. But we gotta appreciate the message. Stop shootin' (unless it's the fair one, that is).

  • Time is at an end
Minds of the greats are blank
The hate in the game multiply
    Even G.O.A.T ain`t safe
    Where friends once stood
    Fakes now replace
    Dehaven now spoke
    Heaven ain`t safe no more
So when the god is gone the throne will be empty
    Probably for all eternity
Accumulate dust til it don`t gleam no more
Coz the game just fouled out
    Too many pretenders
No true contenders coz all their lines got no soul
Just as long as they get their doe
    So all we can do
    Is watch the game fall
    FROM
    GRACE.
