Throwback Monday: Nasty Nas

Nas - Illmatic.jpg

In honor of Nas's five-star classic album Illmatic, which was released April 19, 1994 (almost 15 years ago), I thought I'd feature him in this week's edition of Throwback Monday.

Nasir Jones: Easily my favorite rapper of all time. Easily one of the hardest and clever lyricists of all time. "The World is Yours" -- easily one of my favorite songs of all time.

"The World is Yours"

"Halftime"

"One Love"

"If I ruled the World"

"Street Dreams"

"Hate me Now"

"Got Yourself a Gun"

"Made you Look"

BONUS: "Ether" Live Performance

Any joints after God's Son are too recent... but you get the drift.

Wow..Those are 9 classic joints right there...Nas is not my favorite, but he is in my top 10 of all time rap artist...

Queens Reigns Supreme!! The best that ever did it come from Queens. From the early 80's to now.

1st to go platinum. (Run DMC)
1st to tour arenas
1st on MTV (Run-DMC)
1st on RollingStone (Run-DMC)
1st to get endorsement deals (Swatch and adidas)
1st to wear mad jewelry and urban wear
1st rap sex symbol (LL)
1st real rap label (Def Jam)
1st female group to go Platinum (Salt & Pepa)

There's so many more but just remember that when you look at rap today you don't see the Furious Five dressed up like the Village People or Bambataa dressed like Parliment Funakdelic. Those dudes wanted to be funk and disco artists and only after they saw how far RHYMING and flowing could go did they try to reclaim hip hop. You see QUEENS all over the game. That's OUR swagger. Respect it!

Manhattan keep on making it, Brooklyn keeps on taking it, Bronx keep creating it but Queens ELEVATED it!!!!

Where would hip hop be without Queens? NOWHERE.

I respect QUEENS for the major contributions they provided, but your list is essentially a tribute to one group: RUN DMC. Queens has some of the best groups ever in rap. However, BROOKLYN has the best EMCEES ever: BIG DADDY KANE, BIGGIE, JAY-Z, MOS DEF, MC LYTE, GZA & O.D.B, and others. Nobody is topping that list. The crown has remained in Kings County (Brooklyn).

Peace to Clo-Fresh and Nim:

Now Nim, seeing that you are from Queens, I know that you have been on Long Island a time or two (lol). Now the only reson I mention that because the best rapper to ever touch a mic is from Long Island and that is Rakim.

Now I don't dispute anything you said because as usual you typed nothing but the truth. However, come on bruh, you know that Ra is the best of all time.

People give Pac and Big that title because they are dead, but real talk, Big nor Pac should not even be mentioned in the same breath as Rakim.

Nas is the second best rapper to ever touch a mic. Queens contribution to the game is huge. New York City's contribution to the game is huge. Sometimes I think in a selfish and unfair way and wish that the game never left New York. Seems like once the game left New York it got all f*cked up. And I am not saying that to be on some F8ck the west coast and south sh*t. I am just saying to me as a Biased new yorker, the Game was much better when New York had sole governance over it.

I was listening to illmatic the other day and now I see why so many people like that album. Nas was 20 something and ahead of his time like he still is today.

Top Ten, Period:

1. Rakim - Long Island
2. Nas - Queens
3. KRS 1- The Bronx
4. Big Daddy Kane - BK
5. BIG - BK
6. Chuck D - Long Island
7. Ice Cube- South Central LA
8. Pac - The Bronx/ Baltimore
9. Slick Rick - London/The Bronx
10. Jay Z - BK

I knew it would be one of these days. LOL!

@Sha

Didn't Kane come to Queens to get put on?! Wasn't he part of the Juice Crew? You do remember them don't you? NO ONE in BK could put him on. I remember when the FAT BOYS was repping for BK. LOL!

@BK

Where did Rakim go to get put on? Queens!!! Eric B for President? Corona's finest.

We run the yard. I'm gonna have fun today and I better not hear a peep from the Bx. LOL!

@ NIm

LMAOOOOOOOOOOO

@Sha

Your lest is indeed impressive but they all game AFTER we led the way. In rap's formative years the "King" bowed to the "Queen"

Biggie is not in my top ten. His music is not timeless. His one posthumous album went wood and that should sober the Biggie fans up.

Jay is in my top 5 BUT he got ETHERED by the kid from Queens and Irv Gotti is responsible for saving his label, bringing him to Def Jam (Queens run y'all ni99as) and helping him crack radio. Irv even DJ'd for him in the begining and got Hype (Best video director also from Queens) to shoot the first video on the cheap because ballin Jay and Dame had no PAPER.

Lyte was inspired by S&P

GZA reps Shaolin and ODB was the reincarnation of Flava Flav with SOME skills. I'm talking creativity and originality not personal preferences my man.

Keep it coming. I'm ready to dispel all myths and fantasies today. LOL!

I have to agree that death have treated both Pac and Big very kindly and generously when it comes to their place in terms of the Music only, and not their personality and their impact on the art.

Now here is the BK's starting five:

1. Big Daddy Kane
2. Kool G. Rap
3. Jay Z
4. Big
5. Talib/Mos def

@Big Up

You know got mad love for Kane. He's in my top 5 of all time. I believe G Rap is from Corona Queens though. I'm sure he probably moved to Queens from BK like 40% of the people in the boro but he reps Queens all day not Ft. Greene where I believe he has some family.

I haven't even begun to sh*t on cats yet. This is a lay up. I'm gonna clobber these rap kool-aid drikers with facts and truth if they step up to the plate. LMAO!

Nim

You know what, I always thought G rap was from BK. That nigga was in Brooklyn all the time. I stand corrected.

THAT'S WASSUP!!!

I'm sayin, NEW YORK STAND UP!!! WE RUN SH#T!!!

@ everybody, I'm just enjoying the posts. It's like a clash of the Hip Hop titans. Bottom line is there's no other city on the planet that can claim greats and legends of Hip Hop like NYC. Down souf Kool-aid drinkers should take notice to the greatness that is NYC.

@ Nim - daaaayum. What got into you!!!??? LOL.

Nimrod is usually the calm and collected one, but it looks like your buttons just got pushed. Damn, bruh. Didn't know you had that kinda fire in you. Brotherman swinging at all comers.

IT'S A CELEBRATION, B*TCHES!!! I love NYC to the fullest.

@ REACT:

LMAO - I know. I am about to sign off and have my older brother sign on (lol). He is much more equipped to battle Nim on this one, than I am. I feel ethered after my G Rap f*ck up - lol.

Real talk though - without kicking any region, doesn't it seem like this Hip Hop sh*t fell off a cliff when it left NY?

BIGUP2BK just spoke the truth about Rakim vs. Biggie/Pac.

I rep Brooklyn all day and I'm not even mad at Rakim like that. For real, he could be from TRIBECA, NYC and he'd get love!

Just to add to the NYC mystique, out-of-towners run to NYC just to get put on. One of my favorites (Gangstarr) repped NYC so hard you'd think they were natural-born citizens. Dayum, those were the days... Kool G Rap and Gangstarr...

@ REACT:

I know, GURU is actually from Boston and his pop's is a judge in Boston. However, GURU reps BK, hard.

As for Rakim, this dude is clearly the GOAT.

BROOKLYN IN DA HOUSE

Aight... I'mma take a shot at the fire-breathing dragon! (clearing my throat) Wish me luck.

Ayo, Nim, mayne!

Let's put your own logic to work. You wrote: "There's so many more but just remember that when you look at rap today you don't see the Furious Five dressed up like the Village People or Bambataa dressed like Parliment Funakdelic. Those dudes wanted to be funk and disco artists and only after they saw how far RHYMING and flowing could go did they try to reclaim hip hop."

So, now take a look at your list of Queens heavyweights and you'll see a pattern... a group of NON-LYRICAL but trailblazing artists who get mad clout for being pioneers (the whole "first of..." list) BUT WEREN'T ACTUALLY THE MOST INFLUENTIAL.

I co-sign the sh*t about rap groups going disco and funk because they didn't realize the importance that rhyming and flowing would have as the genre progressed.

THE QUESTION IS WHICH BOROUGH BOASTS THE MOST INFLUENTIAL ARTISTS - the kind that created copycats. Who "fathered" the flow of so many other artists in NYC??? I'll tell you who...

BIG... DADDY... KANE! a.k.a. baby-daddy, a.k.a. the Darth Vader of this sh*t, talkin bout "Luke... I'm your fatherrrrrr!" And yup, he's straight outta B-R-O-O-K-L-Y-N.

Ask Nas himself - he sees that episode in his nightmares... wakin' up screaming "Nooooooooooooo...." HAHAHAHAHAAAAAH.

brooklyn in the house

RUN DMC MIGHT AS WELL BE STERILE... CAUSE THEY DIDN'T FATHER ANYONE IN THE HIP HOP GAME!!!

Please name one notable rapper/group that took after them??? Even Das Efx (by the way, also from Brooklyn) had mad copycats for a while. RIGGIDY RRROW!! And I'm not hatin; no diss! Those guys are only good for royalty checks and honorary awards. But if you wanna talk about rappers that have "put in work" in the game to make it what it is (or at least was in the golden age), Queens don't get to wear that crown.

I'm not saying that only Brooklyn cats were atop the leader board; I'm saying that Brooklyn cats have CONTRIBUTED THE MOST (yeah, that wasn't a typo) to the Hip Hop kingdom. Ayo, we practically built the pyramids of this sh*t while the pharaohs took the credit.

Early Brooklyn lyricism influenced rappers from other boroughs to make NYC Hip Hop what it is.

I'm not trying to turn NYC on NYC... but I'm not letting Queens sit comfortably on the throne like that!!! LOL.

@ REACT:

You are making progress, kid. Put BK on your shoulders and take us to our rightful placei n Hip Hop History...lol.

I think that you have Nim on the ropes now....lmao.

@React

LMAO! Are you trying to trap me?! You know I gots mad love for Kane so I'll never try to discredit him BUT he's a made man in QUEENS.

LL was a helluva a performer, sex symbol (where do you think the whole shirtless swag came from?) battle rapper (on wax), etc. and he has a clssic album under his belt. (Mama Said Knock You Out) and he started at the tender age of 16!!!!!. Lets not forget author and actor on both big and small screen. How about longest career? Many have shone brighter but none longer nor possessing a range so broad. No one's CAREER comes close. He is the G.O.A.T.

From a COMMERCIAL aspect Queens turned hip hop into the profitable business it became. Without us hip hop would still be in that raggedy tenament Kool Herc failed to save. LOL! We showed EVERYONE how to make money off of rap and that's the biggest influence of all.

Lyrically, there are cats like the Beatnuts and Supa Lover Cee and Casanova Rud who were nice but couldn't get the shine because Queens was so thick.

Remember man, before Wu there was Juice Crew. Before Puff there was Russell Simmons. Before Bad Boy there was Def Jam and before Biggie, Jay or any of Brooklyn's finest QUEENS built the house those dudes call home. Reaspect it REACT!!!! LOL!

The reason Kane went to QB because that's where the illiest lyricist resided. You don't think those sparring sessions with QB's finest had some influence on Kane? Puh-Leaze!

After taking a body shot or two, Nim comes off the ropes swinging - scoring here and there. Now both fighter are back to the middle of the ring.

Let me remind everyone watching this classic match up between BK, and Queens, that "BROOKLYN, BROOKLYN, WE GO HARD!!!!"

LMAO

Now I have a problem with Nim's claim that LL is the GOAT but after my Kool G. Rap f*ck up, I have no choice but to remain quiet...LMAO

Hype Williams - Queens
Yo MTV Raps Queens
Origial Hot-97 Morning Show - Queens
Mr. Magic rap attack w/Marley Marl - Queens
Kwame - Queens
Kid and Play - Queens (you know you loved House Party. LOL)

Tribe Called Quest - Queens
Akinelye - Queens
Craig G - Queens
Kool G Rap - Queens
Nas - Queens
Nature - Queens
Cormega, Noyd, - Queens
Mobb Deep - Queens
Royal Flush - Queens
Organized Konfusion - Queens
DJ Clue (King of the Mixtapes) - Queens

Who wanna get ETHERED on here?!!! LOL!

@ Bigup2bk, REACT, & Nimrod.. I respect all of you guys, EVEN YOU TOO NIMROD... I have chosen to remain silent on this discussion cause I'm not from NYC...Love y'all music but don't want to get in on this topic. All of you guys have compelling arguments..Keep it coming..

See without the MONEY those backpackers from BK like Smiff and Wesson would never get signed to spit that heat.

Run-DMC sterile? Surely you jest. Do you understand that they sold 6 million records at a time going gold was a major feat?!!!! Have you been hitting the sauce this morning React? LMAO!

Why do you think you heard your favorite rappers from BK on the radio? Who cracked that barrier? Come on man.

Why do you think NWA wore sweatshits and tights Lees when they came out? They weren't trying to be like anyone in Brooklyn. Hell, greatness inspired greatness. LOL! Too easy. Where you at React? I'm waiting. LOL

My bad I forgot Track Masters and Steve Stoute. I can forget more playas from Queens than some Boroughs have. LOL! Just imagine how major those two were and I FORGOT them. After Biggie, Kane and Jay-Z the list in BK gets downright obscure. LOL!

Queens is dancing around and verbally taunting BK. This is dangerous considering the power puncher that BK is. This strategy could prove to be dangerous.

@ Clo-Fresh

I am enjoying this sh*t. Nim knocked me out with a sneaky short left hook...lol...

I never saw that sh*tb coming...lol

So React has taken over the wheel and will now march BK to victory.

Wait!!! I forgot Irv Gotti and Murder Inc who ran things in the late 90's. Irv saved Def Jam, signed DMX and saved Jigga and the Roc while saving Russell's financial future and signing Ja Rule. Did Irv and his hybrid sound not DOMINATE the airways at one time? Queens Baby. Wait how can I forget 50 Cent?! The man who sold 10 million out the gate. Only in Queens can you over look a diamond selling artist. LMAO!

NO, NIM... NOOOOO... (LOL) YOU'RE BETTER THAN THIS!!!

You just did the unthinkable: You went to COMMERCIAL SUCCESS as your trump card. "You know you done f#cked up, right?" LOL.

Even if that was a good route to go on, we would have to factor in chronological order - since we're talking about most influential in the game. By the way, you see how I just took you there, right? C'mon, yo, you know how I kicks it on this blog discussion sh*t. [insert evil mad scientist laugh]

Who started making money in Hip Hop? Advantage Queens (Run DMC). But like I said, them boys is sterile. The only thing they gave birth to was Hip-Hop & Rock collabos... and last time I checked, that offspring has autism. (LOL)

LL was among the first to make money off of Hip-Hop right behind Run DMC. But are we going to say that he inspired the movement like that? Nah. Yeah, he did father the whole shirtless rapper syndrome - BUT DO YOU REALLY WANNA TAKE CREDIT FOR THAT, YO??? LL is the Darth Vader of R&B collabos. His most famous protege? Ja Fool. Oh yeah, tell LL that the crown for rapper-turned-actor goes to WILL SMITH, not Todd Smith!

But to your point, yeah, Queens do get the money (dolla-dolla bill yaaaall). But the real question is, who get championship belts for emceeing???

Bottom line is, according to your own logic, Kane went to QB FOR THE MONEY, not the lyricism!!! And while he was there, he got Queens knocked up and she gave birth to Nas, Mobb Deep, and others like that. LOL

Ayo, Nim, you're in a tough spot right now, fam! I know you can't say sh*t to discredit Kane, so I'mma milk that for all it's worth! [insert another evil mad scientist laugh]

React, Nim brought out 50 - Ok, knock his ass out, now...LMAOOOOO

"Oh yeah, tell LL that the crown for rapper-turned-actor goes to WILL SMITH, not Todd Smith!"

LMAOOO

I love it.....

You dudes are the best....lol....yall need to take this sh* on the road.

I am loving it!

This is a SOHH CLASSIC

I have to step out for 15 minutes, but don't stop - I will catch up when i get back.

AY, NIM. SERIOUSLY, THE SITE WOULDN'T LET ME POST SINCE LIKE 1:30. I've been fighting to get a comment through for the past half-hour, so I just read your posts a minute ago.

I guess Queens run sohh.com too, right? LOL

Wait... did you just bring out Irv Gotti and 50???

Nah, it's on!

@Big Up

LMAO! I dropped the 50 card just for you. LOL!

@React

You and I are comparing apples and oranges. From the gate I mentioned nothing but commercial successes with MTV, Rollingstone, endorsements, etc. YOU have failed miserably intrying to shift the focus to a more subjective subject. LOL!

Mathematics are the UNIVERSAL language and cannot be denied. The #'s don't lie because back then no one bought albums. The #'s are the truest barometer of how many people are reached. Only in rap is commercial success a dirty word rather than the objective. LOL! Shall I continue?

Kid Capri and Ron G had the Mixtape thing on lock but Clue took it to the next level and got paid and when you examine rap you will see Queens consistently does the same thing over and over and over more so than ANYONE.

I'm not gonna debate who's the best rapper. I'll let the #'s do the talking. No matter how hard yo try 2 + 2 will never be 5. LMAO!

@React

You really have my hands tied with Kane BUT Marley fathered Nas and all the talent in QB. Your guess is as good as mine with who he impregnated. LMAO!

I gotta run till later but I'll be back this evening. Peace Big Up, React and everyone else. It was fun while it lasted.

Queens has left the building!!!!

I'll give you props for the list you posted at 1:45... at least for most of it. But you're digging yourself into a hole, brotherman.

From the looks of it, Queens is the headquarters of commercially successful "uncle tomming." That was a layup for the dude Bigup2bk.

You got Brooklyn beat on that one. Queens get the money alright, but at what expense???

Irv Gotti and the Murda Inc boys should simply NOT be brought up. They are the brains behind "Hip-Pop" with Ja Fool and Ashanti leading the pack.

Yo MTV Raps??? Hot 97??? Those are like the sweatshops where "Rap music" churned out the self-degrading images of Black culture for all the world to enjoy!

Brooklyn is where the finesse and rugged flow is born. Queens is where the Jews sign our rappers - or fabricate imitations to steal our flow and sell millions of records. [It's all beginning to become clear now.... hahahahahahaaa].

Just like you've got your kryptonite (Big Daddy Kane), I've got mine (Tribe Called Quest)... urrgghhh... I feel... my... powers... weakening!!!!

Aight, mayne! I've gotta bounce myself. That was some good sh*t. We'll have to pick this up later.

But you have to admit that somehow, I've gotten you out of your element. Because you're the FIRST dude to blast the numbers game; numbers do not necessarily equate to lyrical prowess or staying true to the genre. Hip-Hop culture lives on the streets and is a cause that is championed by the unsigned youngster who has fallen in love with the marriage between beat and lyric. Cats start a beat thumping their chest, bob their head, and the lyrics begin to flow. Mayne, you know that!

Yet what we see commercialized on the "Yo MTV Raps" and "106 & Park" is the pawning of "Made in China" Hip-Hop. That stuff has been done simply to sell records.

You don't want Queens sitting on THAT throne, do you fam?

My perspective remains the same. Who has been the most influential and has contributed the most to the best of Hip-Hop?.......................... it ain't Queens! LOL.

Good sh*t, yo! 1

And I did it all with one Biggie and Jay-Z tied behind my back!

@ Nim,

LOL, I knew that. See that f*cked up....lol. You are hitting me after bell has already rung...LMAOOO.

React is going to make you pay big for that....lol.

You dudes are killing me - I am over here in tears from laughing so hard.

I must send you both a check. I like to pay for good quality entertainment...lol.

aw man I GOTTA address the Uncle Tom charge levied against Queens along with the race card being played... React is that you? LOL!

What artist in rap didn't put money in a jew pocket? End of debate.

So now Hot 97 and Yo MTV raps are bad for rap? Tell that to the Brooklyn artists who would have no career without either.

"Uncle tomming" artists ccan be more applied to pseudo drug dealer rappers perpetuating negative stereotypes of the black male and Queens is not the home of tha. I remember KRS attacking another black man without provocation for attention and calling his album "Criminal Minded?" Let's not start throwing stones React lest you find yourself with dirt on your back. LOL!

Jay-Z fronting like he owns the nets who are really owned by Jewish Bret Ratner. Hmmmmm. He's got lots of Tom in him. I'll withhold fire and allow you to regain your composure young man cause you're leading with your chin right now. LMAO!

I'm running late. Queens has left the building for real!

Peace, React.

You and Nim gave us a Classic. I enjoyed it!

Big Up to you and Nim for doing it Big!

I am going to get back to work too.

DAMN, Nim, DAMN!

Yo Reract- You can't leave Bruh....lol....You can't leave....

You can't let Nim go out like he is with that last post......You can't leave....LMAOOOOO

Correction. Bruce Ratner. Bret Ratner is the Jewish director who got his break with the Wu Tang Triumph video through his Jewish friend Steve Rifkin who signed them.... I can't believe yoou went there React. LMAO. I'm gonna finish you off later tonight

cheers!

REACT, COME BACK, BRUH! NIM IS GOING IN....LMAOOO...

COME BACK, LMAOOO

MAN, YOU DUDES ARE GOING TO GET ME FIRED! I KNOW EVERYONE IN MY OFFICE CAN HEAR ME LAUGHING!

HAHAHAHAHAAAAAH... GOOD COUNTER, NIM!

And if you do know me, you best believe that was to get a rise outta ya. We're all running late to appointments, but I'll clarify/substantiate that...

Commercial success is Queens' claim to the throne... but SHOULD that be the case?

You saw where I started from, and it was strictly on the amount of influence and contribution to Hip-Hop history. Who fathered who's style and so on. That's where I believe the crown SHOULD go to.

The commercial success angle invites many, many detestable creatures, such as the ones I jabbed you with.

READ YOUR OWN LIST AGAIN!

Do you STILL wanna hold up those accomplishments??? In light of the Queens artist being featured on this blog (Nas)???

Nas holds the banner for Queens and all of NYC as one of the best lyricist to have picked up a mike (even though I was and still am his worst critic for that "N*gger" album title). He is the mold for what rappers should strive to attain.

Take a look at the list again. First off, Run-DMC gets half-credit because they did influence others musically; they might as well be under the category Rap-Rock (no diss). What's left is magazine covers and commercial appeal WHICH MC HAMMER DID TOO. Then you have the following...

1st to get endorsement deals (Swatch and adidas)???
1st to wear mad jewelry and urban wear???
1st rap sex symbol (LL)???

Huh? LOL. Yo, mayne. C'mon.

@ React:

Yeah, BK leaves the building with some energy - that's a good look! We couldn't let Nim roll out like that without a response (lol)!

TYPO:
First off, Run-DMC gets half-credit because they did NOT influence others musically.

LONG LIVE BIG DADDY KRYPTONITE... I MEAN, KANE!!!

Hahahaaaaaah... you my dawg, Nim, you know that!?!

Word Up - both of you dudes are stand up cats.

You dudes took a topic that can be debated for years, had fun with it, and educated everyone who will read these posts.

Real talk, it was really enjoyable to read.

LOL. Last one till the p.m.

Yeah, Jew boys f#ckin' us ALL up... but why Queens raising they hand and asking to be first in line?
