Last week Joe Budden finally "dropped" his album Padded Room, and this week it debuted at #42 on the charts, selling an incredible 14,000! Soulja Boy numbers man. I put quotation marks around "dropped" because this album is supposedly only available online. So technically, Joey didn't "drop" his album... he made it avail for download, or something.
But that's not what I'm confused about.
The promo leading up to the release of this album has been Joe Budden's wifey. Not Joe HIMSELF. So technically-- being that he couldn't garner enough buzz of his own besides that stupid Saigon "beef" and had to instead use his "beat box"--shouldn't she get a royalty check or two? Joe had them video taping some lunch they were having with a group of people while his chick talked about how she doesn't have "thick skin." Like we cared. And then had her jumping on a trampoline. And a bunch of other material circulated in between those two particular videos. And she was in all of them.
Is this supposed to be your girlfriend or your only ticket to promo?
Is this what rap has been reduced to? (Well... yeah.) Pimping your girl's ass to keep people interested in your album? Now that's what you call a "bitch made n*gga." In the most literal form.
Seeing the way dudes fall allllllll the way off in the end of-- or after-- their days at Def Jam, I think being signed to Def is becoming more of a curse than being signed with Diddy. And Diddy is hard to beat.
So, confessions: Who actually LEGALLY downloaded this album? Surely no one in the hood, Joey. Just thought I'd add that.
And is 14,000 good for a digital release -- or bad? I'd say... Bad. Horrible. The rib cage of the industry is finally beginning to show. The fact that people are getting so desperate as to resort to strictly digital release means the industry is accepting that they've lost the ability to sell hard copies. In other words, the illegal downloaders won.
Digital release is not a good thing. It's harmful to labels. It undervalues the artist. It's not good for anything. Put money on it that even the most prolific labels begin to fold.
Right about now, the labels look like "Menace II Society's" King in the interrogation room: "Now, you see... You know you done f*cked up now, right?"
The beats arent all that on the padded room. he kills it on every verse though. the engineering is terrible too. his projects always have horrible engineering. i support joe to the fullest. He's an incredible artist.

Do you mean to tell me that not only were you not aware that becoming available as a retail cd was THE reason padded room was pushed back, but that you have not seen nor heard any of the news of people buying this cd out the stores? You havent heard about or seen any of the many "internet soldier" videos of budden fans buying 12 cds at a time? Get your facts straight.

Ps. 14k from an all digital, independent release sure doesn't sound bad to me. plus if you think changing formats is more a sign of the industry dying than the industry finally catching on... well then i guess we know why you're not on the corporate side of things
A dud is a dud. The days of people buying an album for a song or a feature is over. Back in the day a someone could sell a slighty under/over 500k cd by just having 2 songs with 2 different platinum rappers, but now a platinum rapper himself is luck to see 400k. The winners are THE FANS and THE BESSSSSSST RAPPPPPPERS. The losers are MEDIOCRE ARTISTS, WACK ARTISTS, WACK LABELS, and WACK GIMMICKS.
Sorry Charlie, we live in a day where PLATINUM is the New 3 x PLATINUM. GOLD is the New PLATINUM. >500k on a major is bad and >500k on an indy is RICH BIYOOOOCH.
ILLEGAL DOWNLOADS are not as bad as buying a WACK ALBUM. If they stopped illegal downloads people still wouldn't buy too much of this bull that's on the market too bad.
This site is horrible. You are really saying that a new push for digitial release only is bad? What you still got a walkman? nobody is buying or listeninig to cd's anymore. It doesn't mean that illegal downloaders have won. it means technology is changing and the record companies are trying to keep up. illegal downloading is killing sales but thats not the only thing. These artists have to take some blame for not being able to make a decent album anymore. This is the era of one hit wonders.

The album was available at Best Buy. 14,000 are really good numbers for an Amalgam Digital release. There are tons of artists who sell 30,000-60,000 in the first week on major labels with all the promotion in the world. So 14,000 on Amalgam with a primarily digital release is close to outstanding. As far as the promotion, nobody bought the album to see his girl. She doesn't rap, sing, or produce any tracks on there. Trust me. People may watch Joe Budden TV to see her and her many gifts, but that has nothing to do with the album. Would you buy an Ice-T album because of Coco? Would you buy a Nas album because of Kelis? C'mon that doesn't even make sense!!! The lyrics on the album are crazy ill and the production, as usual, is just okay. The reviews for the album have been very positive. Either you haven't played the album, or you don't like Joe Budden's music, or you have an average looking girl with a small booty.

isnt 14000 good for indie? The album is hot from what I've heard. I didnt cop yet but I plan to. I'm not down with buying digital copies I want a CD. If something happens to my computer i will loose the album.

It's one thing to have an opinion, it's another thing to post your opinion, and not have the facts straight. You definitely sound like a hater, and there is no debate to be had there.
The album was also sold as a physical copy available in stores. Joe did his share of promotion, from doing plenty of JBTV videos (with his girl nowhere to be found), interviews, songs with Slaughterhouse, in store signings, and whatever else he could do.
For an independent release, for an artist who hasn't put out a retail album in over 5 years, and isn't being force fed to the masses. With no video, no major radio play, I think 13-14k for first week sales is great.
The album will definitely go over a lot of people's heads, cause you do need an attention span, and a little bit of smarts to put together the concept, and direction of certain songs to see how genius of an artist Joe Budden is. It's just that most people will only listen to it once, and write it off as wack, but they're missin out on some above average hip hop.
