What? The "New York Post"? This is so strange I'm wondering if they were paid to write a review this nice.
But then again, I said myself that this soundtrack was probably gonna be a good look, and that I hadn't said this about a hip-hop soundtrack in years. And I hadn't even heard the whole thing yet. Guess I was right.
"NY Post" Review:
When you're resurrecting a rap icon as beloved and revered as the late Christopher Wallace, known as Notorious B.I.G. (a k a Biggie Smalls), you'd better get it right. With loving care, Wallace's friends did just that when they put together this musical collection that supports the biopic coming out Friday, by drawing a succinct timeline of Biggie's life with his original raps and a few choice tracks by guest MCs.
For the hard-core Brooklyn purists, there's "Hypnotize," "Juicy" and his first recording, "Party & Bull-s - - t." These are all tracks that showcase Biggie's storytelling skills. For fans looking for the historical view of Biggie Smalls - whose 1997 murder remains unsolved - there are rare demos such as "Microphone Murderer" and "Guaranteed Raw." And then there are the tribute tracks that include a terrific Jay-Z tune, "Brooklyn Go Hard," as well as "The World Is Filled," featuring Too Short trading licks with B.I.G.'s closest musical confederate, Sean Combs.
There are just a few great soundtracks out there: The music for "A Clockwork Orange" is one, and the record supporting the "The Big Chill" is another. Add this rap record to that small list.
Might wanna cop that.
