December 2008 Archives

2008 has to be -- by far-- the most monotonous year in hip-hop. Correction: it IS the most monotonous year in hip-hop.  For the past couple of years we've seen the same six acts dominating the rap scene.  And I can name all 6 without even thinking: T.I., Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Nas, Jay-Z, and 50 Cent.

But when we say "dominate," do we mean in terms of sales, buzz/controversy, or both? You decide. But the point is, Nas's statement couldn't be more true, because despite the same old acts being able to push a few albums, rap is still struggling to survive on its death bed and has been doing so for more than long enough.  When will the fight end? I believe 2009 will either flatten hip-hop's wavering lifeline, OR make way for change going into 2010.

I don't see any change coming, at least for New York.  But then again, I'm never optimistic. And this is why:

Have you ever called your shorty and repeatedly kept getting her voicemail? Then here's a scenario that might be the root of your problem.

Shout out to Levar and Chris over at More Than Muzic, and the entire R-Side crew. This is their debut video, directed by Steven Tapia, and it's called "Voicemail"

Nas

The (internet) release of this video is completely random.  Why they even bothered to try reminding people that Nas's album is out is beyond me. However, I liked what they did with the song; it was only two minutes long, but they stretched it out by extending the introduction and distracting us with video clips.

I went to sleep thinking I was going to awake the next morning to some news about something I put on my Christmas list, and instead I got news of Fat Joanna trying to make a come back. This wasn't supposed to happen. I'll never take the time to make another list again. This is what I get? Was Joe even anywhere on that list?

If I hear another Ron Browz verse with that stupid voice box, I'm gonna get Lil Wayne's Blood goonies to put this dude in the dirt.

Reckless's Christmas Wish List

First and foremost, I'd like to shout out all my sensitive e-thuggin n*ggas. Without you I'd have no motivation. Even though you're not in here like roaches in a kitchen anymore, it's all love.

Well, Christmas is less than a day away.  And since as a kid I never got even a 1/4 of the things I would write on my list, I figured I'd make up for lost ground by compiling a list of things that I already know will happen.

Not in any particular, here goes:

 STAN ALERT.

gamejones.jpg

We knew The Game wouldn't let a full month of December go by without taking one last shot at Hov before the year's end. Where on earth is Jim Jones? ... He's dead. The Game refused to let Jimmy do another Jay-Z interview because he wanted BADLY to do the honors himself. Well, he did a damn good job of it.

Shout out to Erik Parker. The following is an interview that Erik did with The Game for "The Parker Report." This dude Game contradicts himself so much it's ridiculous:

"I grew up just listening to hip-hop and Jay-Z -- he's a big part of hip-hop. So I was influenced by the music. But I aint necessarily gotta be friends with him or really admire the man. He just a man like me."

Some time towards the end of November, Lil Wayne dropped some provocative lines to the boy 50 Cent. And it went something like this:

Ron Browz Commits Suicide...

...With his wack song and stupid dance. Why doesn't he practice this on the top floor of the Empire State building? His career will definitely go to new heights after that. No pun intended.

"F*CK NEW YORK" T-Shirts For Sale

When I had these shirts designed, I had the following rappers/crooks in mind:

Hold on son. Does this dude Dame have grey hair? Or is the quality of the video just fuzzy? Nah. The pic says it all. The signs of stress have definitely gotten to Dame's appearance. This dude must be fi broke to the point of no return.

Not only do I see a worn old man, but I also see a big change in Dame's attitude.  Who used to be an arrogant c*ck is now just a regular dude with perhaps regular money.

This is the kind of sh*t I've been looking for. I haven't bought a rap album in a while, but based on the music I've been hearing from Kiss, best believe I'm gonna cop that album.

The only thing I'm tired of is n*ggas using Lil Wayne as a life line. But he did represent on this joint! Uh-oh! He's talking about doing to n*ggas what he does best! Soo-woo! All you blood gang cats twirl your red bandanas in the air. Cornball. I still can't get over how this corny, blue-and-black-wearing fake really has these cats thinking he's a real blood. No matter how foolish gangs are, the rules still apply: BLOODS DON'T WEAR BLUE-- especially a blue scarf-- under ANY circumstances.

... Literally! What happened to that joint?

bustaArab.jpg

I can't answer that question. But Ron Browz is still eatin, cause Busta is still pursuing what he can with that "Arab" money. He did a part 2, which actualy sucks, and lacks the "Arab" in the hook. Instead, he had Ron Browz replaced it with "a-rrrrrrra" or some retarded sh*t he's doing. But this is not why it sucks. It seems as if there are too many people on the track saying a bunch of nothing.

I have no respect for anyone who beefs with Iggnant Brute aka "Shout Out To All The Slavemasters" aka Soulja Boy. You know, the way he was praising those supremacists sounds JUST LIKE the slaves who used to fight amongst each other arguing about who's slavemaster was more superior. Good job Soulja Boy!

Ice T is a legend forever, and I understood what he was saying, but feuding with "Soulja Boy"? That was low. However, that was the other neck of the woods. Charles, on the other hand, has Harlem looking real corny. This is an embarrassment to New York within itself. But if that's how you want to jump start whatever "career" you're pursuing then hey-- to each his own. I just think it's corny for these PR people-- or whoever's advising these new artists-- to be encouraging "beef" to help sell their clients' image.

Why Is Mims STILL Rapping?

Look at what I found lingering around the net. The pint sized smurf aka Chipmunk is still repping New York with that corny ass rap game of his. I was kind of hoping that he would just go away, but nah. He's "back." Not that he was ever really here to leave. And he sounds like trash. I don't even know why I waste my time with this dude. The only press he deserves is the "A-Alike" section in XXL next to Alvin.

 Maybe.

"It's Me Bitches" was arguably more than a tri-state hit. I'll leave that for others to determine.

As far as this joint goes, I don't give a f*ck what anyone says. This is a hit that has enough clout to reach the West coast. To be honest, I only came to this after I listened to it over and over while envisioning I had heard it on the radio a million times.

There's something TERRIBLY wrong with this picture.

No. Not the picture itself. What you see above? Now THESE are what you call bonafide crack dealers. This may not count for Uncle Murda and Brownsville, but the other two are from two of the most heavily gentrified areas in all of New York City, and boy, I tell you. They've got these ghettos on LOCK. Their stuff is so good they've got to test it before they cook it. Can't have no half-ass products. Tru Life and Uncle Murda have notorious reputations to maintain.

Real talk. I agree with everything Joe Budden said the below video. Well, some of it.

New York has rappers trying their best to rep their city and stay original, and all cats can do is stand around in the crowd and try to look too cool to support. This is the thanks NY cats get for not trying to be like MIMS. And that's f*cked up. But you also have to look at the fact that Red Cafe and Ron Browz haven't really infiltrated the rap scene on a large enough scale for a lot of these dudes to know who they are. Not every hood cat in New York City stays on the internet 24-7. Red Cafe hasn't come with a real hit, and Ron Browz is still known for producing-- if his name rings a bell at all. Maino, on the other hand, is a different story. He garnered some national buzz with "Hi Hater," but then he fell off the map. You expect cats to wave their hands to a song that's been old since the summer time? Not really.

Yessirrrr.

In this latest edition of OBJECTIVE news (lmao), we've got the follow up to Jaz-Old burning up a Roc-A-Fella hat, still talking sh*t, and standing in front of Marcy. The broke n*gga even dug up enough money to make dude a birthday cake. Oh my bad I gotta watch how I say things. This blog is supposed to be "unbiased" and "objective news," as a reader said yesterday.

Jaz-Old: The New DeHaven

jay-z_Jaz-o.jpg

Let me get this straight. Inside of this email was the Forbes DVD link that consisted of an interview with Jaz-O... that didn't work, by the way. And it's not like he's not saying anything in that video that we can't guess. Something to the effect of "Shawn Carter to Jay-Z? Damn you on Jaz' d*ck."

Staying on topic here. So, after the video link-- which "features" Jaz's explanation of the Hov dis record, and his reason as to why he never signed to the ROC-- they placed a Zshare link to Jaz's new song. So let me think about this for a second. I may be on to something. Video about a bunch of decade-old bullsh*t + Zshare link to new song= I get it.... this is Public Relations! (Applause). I knew that! What better way to market an artist than to use a popular artist's name? Even if it means digging up old trash.

Busta claimed this song and dance is a global phenomenon. Could be. And I don't know what others think about this video, but I know what I think: Madd funny. A half-ass, yet comical version of Biggie's "One More Chance."

With this one, he's going back to Brooklyn. Jamaican accent and all.

Odog_Obama.jpg

When you put a visual to it, it becomes even more corny than it sounds.
