Despite little to no promo outside of the internet, it will be officially revealed tomorrow by Soundscan that Nas' Untitled album sold approximately 113,000 units. I'm not going to place "in its first week" at the end of that sentence, because how this industry has chosen to center their support (or lack of) around the strength in first week sales is just ridiculous.
Yes, Def Jam, even though you didn't work hard to get Nas the airplay or video play he deserved --just like you failed to do last time-- Nasir still managed to pull it off. And would you look at that: unlike these ringtone rappers who bag paid-for airplay and a #1 hit on the charts, Nas can move over 100,000 copies in the first week. Now that's what you call a following.
Did anyone outside of the internet community and outside of the Tri-State area know that Nas was releasing an album? ... No.
Now that Hov has washed his hands of his Deaf Jam duties, I wonder who LL is going to blame now. Why? Forget hip-hop; IDJ is the new R&B label. Rihanna got a re-release of her album after dropping a million and one singles, Ne-Yo is on album three, they're still vigorously pushing The Dream even though his album was a flop, they're working on a new artist named Karina Passian, etc etc. In short, what a joke this label has turned out to be. We knew L.A Reid was a bad idea from the jump.
Nas, please let this be your last album with these people.
Do people read or what? that was his numbers at the start of friday which means it only consisted of two days and it only accounted for 9 retailers, which also means that there were other retail outlets whose numbers weren't counted.
get your facts straight before posting
Nas new abulm was the best hip hop abulm this year. I liked Carter 3, but Nas abulm was the best. My favorite song is Black President. DEF JAM you need to start supporting your artist better. I don't think Nas needs DEF JAM he can promote his self. I like that Queens get the money, I think that diss to 50 was over his head. Somebody probably had to tell him he got dissed. (lol)
You got your numbers wrong, Nas is expected do well over 200K copies this week making him No. 1. But I do agree with you on the Def Jam promo thing.
Brodie, that post was the most ignorant shit I've heard in some time. Reckless was exposing these dudes at Def Jam for making the transition from a well respected hip-hop label, to a straight bubblegum RnB one that just churns out whatevers hot that month to make some a little extra change. And here you didn't even see that shit, instead only bringing up Nas' album sales. That was hardly the point, but I would kindly like to thank you for highlighting the problem with hip hop fans today: you don't even care about an artist's musical talent or his consistency anymore, but have been convinced that his sales are a reflection of his integrity and quality.
Somehow I think I understand why Rakim doesn't seem to want to release an album in this climate.
Thanks for feeling the need to bring another person down, Tomwaz. What the hell is that anyway? And to answer the bloggers question, yes we did know NAS was releasing an album outside of the Tri state area. But when have you ever known an east coast artist to move major units down south and out west? Hope you dont say JayZ... that man couldnt do shit but become the most anticipated bootlegg in the city of Houston. Sorry.. Jim Jones 2. Fifty is the closest thing to Southern success.
la reid shitted on nas-def jam bought him no airtime, he easily could have come closed to 300000. if i just listened to radio i would have no idea that nas had a new album and single
la reid shitted on nas they bought him no airtime whatso ever
he coulda easily hit 3000000 if he was getting spins
if i just listened to the radio i would have no idea nas was dropping
rakim is gonna sell under 10,000 no kid knows who he is
Hey guys, have you ever thought that Nas do not want the Def Jam promo. If does not get promo from Def Jam, he does not have recoupable monies that he would have to pay. If he's get 10 points on this album without any help, that more money for Nasir Jones and that fine ass wife of his, Kelis. Smart move, my brother.
More money up front means less money for NAS. It could have been Nas' move. That's all I'm saying.
By the way, I have every Nas album. I remember when Def Jam was a hip-hop label, but even hip-hop grows up. I don't like L.A. Reid at the helm of Def Jam, but who would we put there as fans and as businesspeople?
I think Lyor Cohen or Kevin Liles would have been my choices.
