Cutting through all the fog, there are two primary reasons behind Barack Obama's stunning victory over the Clinton machine:

Authenticity and the war in Iraq.

As amply demonstrated, there is simply no comparison between Obama and Hillary Clinton as far as public speaking is concerned.

He is eloquent and natural, talking directly to the folks.

She is more stilted and rehearsed, talking at the listener.

Senator Clinton comes across as the typical politician, while Senator Obama seems like a genuine human being.

He also outflanked her on the Iraq war.

In the beginning of the campaign, Senator Obama bolted from the starting gate flashing his anti-war cred.

From the jump, he had been against the action.

And now he was the guy who would pull the USA out of the Iraq swamp.

Senator Clinton was immediately put on the defensive, as she initially supported the use of force to remove Saddam.

Also, her entire outlook on confronting Islamic fascism was far too bullish for far-left America.

So, the netroots, as they call themselves, flocked to Obama and provided him with vast amounts of money via the internet.

By the time Hillary rallied Democratic moderates, it was too late.

So, now, Barack Obama has achieved the nomination, but his winning primary strategy on Iraq could come back to haunt him in the general election when the far left becomes rather insignificant.

Already, John McCain is painting Obama as a terror appeaser who would snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in Iraq.

And McCain has some heavy ammunition to back up his attack.

In May, American causalities were the lowest since the Iraq war began in 2003.

In addition, Iraqi oil production is now at its highest level since Saddam fell.

Even the liberal Reuters news agency calls the current situation in Iraq a "dramatic turnabout.

"Of course, you won't hear much about that in the U.S. press, as the liberal media has much invested in an American defeat in Iraq.

But there is no question that the war there can now be won.

It's not a lock, but it's certainly a possibility.

Senator McCain must make the case that a victory in Iraq, which means the country stabilizes and becomes an ally against Islamic terror and Iran, means a much more secure United States.

For the past few weeks, McCain has been spotlighting Iran's villainy, pointing out its support of terror groups like Hezbollah and its outright killing of our forces in Iraq.

Quietly, McCain is setting Obama up for a hard right to the jaw.

If the U.S. pulls out of Iraq too quickly, the pressure on Iran immediately lightens and the potential for aggression by the bitterly anti-Jewish and anti-American mullahs rises dramatically.

Does Obama understand that?

Does it matter to him?

McCain will confront his young challenger with those questions.

Senator Obama's advisors know the Iraq scenario is changing fast.

They also understand that the media will ignore the good news for as long as it can.

But word will get out and, after years of frustration, Americans could be staring at a success story after all.

Not good news for Obama.

Bush wants 50 military bases, control of Iraqi airspace and legal immunity for all American soldiers and contractors

A secret deal being negotiated in Baghdad would perpetuate the American military occupation of Iraq indefinitely, regardless of the outcome of the US presidential election in November.

The terms of the impending deal, details of which have been leaked to The Independent, are likely to have an explosive political effect in Iraq.

Iraqi officials fear that the accord, under which US troops would occupy permanent bases, conduct military operations, arrest Iraqis and enjoy immunity from Iraqi law, will destabilise Iraq's position in the Middle East and lay the basis for unending conflict in their country.

But the accord also threatens to provoke a political crisis in the US.

President Bush wants to push it through by the end of next month so he can declare a military victory and claim his 2003 invasion has been vindicated.

But by perpetuating the US presence in Iraq, the long-term settlement would undercut pledges by the Democratic presidential nominee, Barack Obama, to withdraw US troops if he is elected president in November.

The timing of the agreement would also boost the Republican candidate, John McCain, who has claimed the United States is on the verge of victory in Iraq – a victory that he says Mr Obama would throw away by a premature military withdrawal.

America currently has 151,000 troops in Iraq and, even after projected withdrawals next month, troop levels will stand at more than 142,000 – 10 000 more than when the military "surge" began in January 2007.

Under the terms of the new treaty, the Americans would retain the long-term use of more than 50 bases in Iraq.

American negotiators are also demanding immunity from Iraqi law for US troops and contractors, and a free hand to carry out arrests and conduct military activities in Iraq without consulting the Baghdad government.

The precise nature of the American demands has been kept secret until now.

The leaks are certain to generate an angry backlash in Iraq.

"It is a terrible breach of our sovereignty," said one Iraqi politician, adding that if the security deal was signed it would delegitimise the government in Baghdad which will be seen as an American pawn.

The US has repeatedly denied it wants permanent bases in Iraq but one Iraqi source said: "This is just a tactical subterfuge."

Washington also wants control of Iraqi airspace below 29,000ft and the right to pursue its "war on terror" in Iraq, giving it the authority to arrest anybody it wants and to launch military campaigns without consultation.

Mr Bush is determined to force the Iraqi government to sign the so-called "strategic alliance" without modifications, by the end of next month.

But it is already being condemned by the Iranians and many Arabs as a continuing American attempt to dominate the region.

Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, the powerful and usually moderate Iranian leader, said yesterday that such a deal would create "a permanent occupation".

He added: "The essence of this agreement is to turn the Iraqis into slaves of the Americans."

Iraq's Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, is believed to be personally opposed to the terms of the new pact but feels his coalition government cannot stay in power without US backing.

The deal also risks exacerbating the proxy war being fought between Iran and the United States over who should be more influential in Iraq.

Although Iraqi ministers have said they will reject any agreement limiting Iraqi sovereignty, political observers in Baghdad suspect they will sign in the end and simply want to establish their credentials as defenders of Iraqi independence by a show of defiance now.

The one Iraqi with the authority to stop deal is the majority Shia spiritual leader, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani.

In 2003, he forced the US to agree to a referendum on the new Iraqi constitution and the election of a parliament.

But he is said to believe that loss of US support would drastically weaken the Iraqi Shia, who won a majority in parliament in elections in 2005.

The US is adamantly against the new security agreement being put to a referendum in Iraq, suspecting that it would be voted down.

The influential Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr has called on his followers to demonstrate every Friday against the impending agreement on the grounds that it compromises Iraqi independence.

The Iraqi government wants to delay the actual signing of the agreement but the office of Vice-President Dick Cheney has been trying to force it through.

The US ambassador in Baghdad, Ryan Crocker, has spent weeks trying to secure the accord.

The signature of a security agreement, and a parallel deal providing a legal basis for keeping US troops in Iraq, is unlikely to be accepted by most Iraqis.

But the Kurds, who make up a fifth of the population, will probably favour a continuing American presence, as will Sunni Arab political leaders who want US forces to dilute the power of the Shia.

The Sunni Arab community, which has broadly supported a guerrilla war against US occupation, is likely to be split.

WASHINGTON - Hillary Rodham Clinton met late Thursday with Barack Obama, a day after saying she would end her quest for the Democratic nomination and endorse the Illinois senator.

"Senator Clinton and Senator Obama met tonight and had a productive discussion about the important work that needs to be done to succeed in November," their campaigns said in joint statement.

The statement included no details of their talks, as pressure mounted for Obama to invite Clinton to become his running mate.

Robert Gibbs, an Obama spokesman, would not say where the former rivals met, except that it was not at Clinton's home in Washington, as had been widely reported.

Reporters traveling with Obama sensed something might be happening between the pair might when they arrived at Dulles International Airport after an event in Northern Virginia and Obama was not aboard the airplane.

Asked at the time about the Illinois senator's whereabouts, Gibbs smiled and declined to comment.

Clinton returned to Washington after the after the last primaries on Tuesday night, when Obama earned the 2,118 delegates he needed to secure the Democratic nomination.

She planned to announce Saturday that she was ending her campaign and supporting Obama.

Clinton disavows VP pressureThe meeting followed Clinton's disavowal hours earlier of efforts by some supporters who have urged Obama to choose her as his running mate.

The push-back came a day after the former first lady said she would end her quest for the Democratic nomination and endorse the Illinois senator.

"The choice here is Senator Obama's and his alone."

Clinton was planning an event in Washington Saturday to thank supporters and urge them to back Obama's candidacy.

But as she was bowing out of the race, supporters in Congress and elsewhere were ramping up a campaign to pressure him to put her on the ticket in the No. 2 spot.

Bob Johnson, the billionaire founder of Black Entertainment Television and a Clinton supporter, sent a letter to the Congressional Black Caucus Wednesday urging the group to encourage Obama to choose Clinton as his vice presidential pick.

He said he was doing so with her blessing.

Obama is seeking to become the first black president.

Clinton has told other friends and supporters she would be willing to be Obama's running mate.

But her immediate task is bringing her own presidential bid to a close.

High stakesIn an e-mail to supporters, the New York senator said she "will be speaking on Saturday about how together we can rally the party behind Senator Obama.

The stakes are too high and the task before us too important to do otherwise.

"Clinton expressed the same sentiment in a conference call with 40 members of her national finance committee, whom she urged to begin raising money for Obama and for the Democratic National Committee."

She was in good spirits and totally supportive, without qualification, of Senator Obama and his campaign," finance co-chairman Alan Patricof said of the call.

It was a shift in tone by the former first lady, who announced 17 months ago that she was "in it to win it."

Many of her supporters want her as the vice presidential candidate, in their minds a "dream ticket" that would bring Obama her enthusiastic legions and broaden his appeal to white and working-class voters.

But Obama indicated he intends to take his time making a decision.

"We're not going to be rushed into it. I don't think Senator Clinton expects a quick decision and I don't even know that she's necessarily interested in that," Obama told NBC in an interview.

Clinton's move to formally declare that she is backing the Illinois senator came after Democratic congressional colleagues made clear they had no stomach for a protracted intraparty battle.

Now that Obama has secured the 2,118 delegates necessary to clinch the nomination, Clinton had little choice but to end her quest, and sooner rather than later.

Some of Clinton's closest supporters — the nearly two dozen House Democrats from her home state of New York — switched their endorsements to Obama Thursday.

The public announcement from the 23 New York followed two days of private phone calls weighing her options.

"She was just as spunky as ever," Rep. Charlie Rangel said of Clinton's mood on the calls, as her friends and supporters urged her to come to a decision "sooner rather than later."

Many of the lawmakers said it was important for them, as New Yorkers who are close to Clinton and helped launch her presidential bid, to work together to repair some of the rifts in the party.

"We're Democrats. Dammit to hell we fight. When it's over, we come together and go out there to win," said Rangel, the dean of the New York delegation.

The New Yorkers, said Rep. Gregory Meeks, have a duty "to lead this transition" to full party support of Obama.

Another of Clinton's most prominent supporters, Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, also announced his "wholehearted and enthusiastic support" for Obama Thursday.

Exit strategy: The move to end her campaign came Tuesday, when Clinton told House Democrats during a private conference call that she would get behind Obama's candidacy and congratulate him for gathering the necessary delegates to be the party's nominee.

The only degree of uncertainty was how.

Clinton is exploring options to retain her delegates and promote her issues, including a signature call for universal health care.

The announcement closed an epic five-month nominating battle pitting the first serious female candidate against the most viable black contender ever.

Obama on Tuesday night secured the delegates needed to clinch the Democratic nomination.

But Clinton stopped short of acknowledging that milestone, defiantly insisting she was better positioned to defeat McCain in November.

"What does Hillary want? What does she want?" Clinton asked, hours after telling supporters she'd be open to joining Obama as his vice presidential running mate.

But by Wednesday, other Democrats made it abundantly clear they wanted something too: a swift end to the often bitter nominating contest.

Her decision to acquiesce caught many in her campaign by surprise and left them scrambling to finalize the logistics and specifics behind her campaign departure.

'A guy like him should shut his face' - Clint Eastwood on Spike Lee.

"Has he ever studied the history?" he asks, in that familiar near-whisper.

The "he" is Spike Lee, and the reason Eastwood is asking is because of something Lee had said about Eastwood's Iwo Jima movie Flags of Our Fathers, while promoting his own war movie, Miracle at St Anna, about a black US unit in the second world war.

Lee had noted the lack of African-Americans in Eastwood's movie and told reporters: "That was his version. The negro version did not exist."

Eastwood has no time for Lee's gripes.

"He was complaining when I did Bird [the 1988 biopic of Charlie Parker]. Why would a white guy be doing that? I was the only guy who made it, that's why. He could have gone ahead and made it. Instead he was making something else."

As for Flags of Our Fathers, he says, yes, there was a small detachment of black troops on Iwo Jima as a part of a munitions company, "but they didn't raise the flag. The story is Flags of Our Fathers, the famous flag-raising picture, and they didn't do that. If I go ahead and put an African-American actor in there, people'd go, 'This guy's lost his mind.' I mean, it's not accurate."

Lee shouldn't be demanding African-Americans in Eastwood's next picture, either.

Changeling is set in Los Angeles during the Depression, before the city's make-up was changed by the large black influx.

"What are you going to do, you gonna tell a f*ckin' story about that?" he growls.

"Make it look like a commercial for an equal opportunity player? I'm not in that game. I'm playing it the way I read it historically, and that's the way it is. When I do a picture and it's 90% black, like Bird, I use 90% black people."

Eastwood pauses, deliberately - once it would have provided him with the beat in which to spit out his cheroot before flinging back his poncho - and offers a last word of advice to the most influential black director in American movies.

"A guy like him should shut his face."

Eastwood still likes to let his views be known, often forcefully.

In 2005, he vowed he'd kill Michael Moore if the documentarian ever showed up at his house, the way he had doorstepped Charlton Heston in Bowling for Columbine.

But though he has been associated in the public mind with Republican viewpoints, he's something of an individualist.

"I don't pay attention to either side," he claims.

"I mean, I've always been a libertarian. Leave everybody alone. Let everybody else do what they want. Just stay out of everybody else's hair. So I believe in that value of smaller government. Give politicians power and all of a sudden they'll misuse it on ya."

Has he declared for anybody in this electoral cycle?

"You know, I haven't really," he says.

"My wife used to be an anchorwoman in Arizona, so she knew John McCain and she liked him and I kinda liked him. In fact, we sort of supported him when he was running the first time against Bush eight years ago. But we haven't been active as yet. It's kind of a zoo out there right now. So I think I'll kinda let things percolate."

BRUSSELS-EU & U.S., To Agree on Joint Data Privacy Rules

The EU and the United States should agree on a binding deal on data privacy to boost their cooperation in fighting crime and terrorism, senior officials said ahead of a transatlantic summit next week.

The panel of senior European Union and U.S. officials, set up more than a year ago after European lawmakers and rights groups said data sharing deals lacked proper privacy protection, identified a first set of broad common principles.

"The fight against transnational crime and terrorism requires the ability to share personal data for law enforcement while fully protecting the fundamental rights," the confidential report seen by Reuters says.

"The best way to ensure these interests are met is through a binding international agreement...," the report said.

"It would provide the greatest level of legal security and certainty."

Sharing of personal data is a sensitive issue, and EU lawmakers and rights groups have criticised over the last few years deals such as one giving Washington access to private data on air passengers travelling to the United States and the right to keep them for 15 years.

Other deals include U.S. Treasury Department access to records of international banking network SWIFT, including those of European customers.

The EU itself has been building more police databases and has agreed to exchange DNA data within the bloc.

Both sides of the Atlantic want to push their police data sharing further and say they need to cooperate on data privacy to build trust.

The EU-U.S. panel identified a first set of common principles on data privacy.

These cover the use of information on race and religion in certain cases, the text shows.

"Personal information revealing racial or ethnic origins, political opinions or religious or philosophical beliefs ... health or sexual life ... may not be processed unless domestic law provides appropriate safeguards," the text says.

An EU diplomat said the guidelines did not carry legal weight and would need to be detailed in further negotiations.

"The use of sensitive data depends on circumstances and purpose; it may be OK in some cases, under special circumstances, and not in others," the diplomat said.

The principles agreed also say that people should be informed about the use of their data, which must be supervised by an independent public authority.

Data could be transferred to other countries according to previous arrangement with the country which sent it, or, if there is no arrangement, if transferring the data "supports legitimate public interests" of public security.

The panel failed to agree on other issues such as how to guarantee a citizen's right to redress in cases of misuse of personal information, as the EU insists all its citizens should be allowed to bring suits in U.S courts under a 1974 privacy act -- which is now possible only for U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

"We've made a lot of progress in the talks," a U.S. official said.

"A few issues would need leadership at ministerial level."

(1) This is not a MOVEMENT to begin with, let's get that crystal clear first. Nas put a controversial title on an album that wasn't even put together or thought-through yet (most likely just to get attention). He made some half-assed, uncooked statements, which included grandioso claims that he was going to/wanted to take the sting out of the word. There's nothing more ludicrous as that. In case anyone needs to know WHY that is ludicrous, let me break it down for you for the 17th time:

>>> The issue is to deep and long in both history and the culture of Blacks (around the world) to be addressed or solved through a compilation of songs on one album...

>>> An album song that will only be heard by a fraction of people, most of which are the WRONG people to be hearing it.

>>> Even if it was possible, this work (of undoing hundreds of years worth of poison) is too big for Nas - a guy with no political/social/community credentials; he's just a rapper.

2) To consider it what Nas has done with TITLING his album Nigger and wearing Nigger t-shirts a MOVEMENT is like saying Maino has started a movement with his record "Hi Hater." Perhaps Maino could claim to be taking the "sting" out of the word, or be able to remove the plague "haterism" from the entire globe with his record.

3) A movement should, at the very least, be the combined effort of many people and entities. Think the "Civil Rights MOVEMENT" or those for equal opportunity, voting rights, ending slavery, etc. Even if it isn't that grand, a movement would have a certain level of structure and organization, a clear plan of approach, a clearly definable and feasible goal, ideas/solutions, etc.

We don't have none of that. Just someone taking a very sensitive issue and using it for their own gain = to get record sales. In that perspective, what Nas is trying to do should actually be considered disrespectful and distasteful. HE IS PIMPING OUT THE BLACK CAUSE FOR PETTY GAIN.

An Israeli deputy prime minister on Friday warned that Iran would face attack if it pursues what he said was its nuclear weapons programme.

"If Iran continues its nuclear weapons programme, we will attack it," said Shaul Mofaz, who is also transportation minister.

"Other options are disappearing. The sanctions are not effective. There will be no alternative but to attack Iran in order to stop the Iranian nuclear programme," Mofaz told the Yediot Aharonot daily.

He stressed such an operation could only be conducted with US support.

A former defence minister and armed forces chief of staff, Mofaz hopes to replace embattled Ehud Olmert as prime minister and at the helm of the Kadima party.

We tracked down Karrine and conducted an EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with her - and she gave us some shocking details into her life for the past few months.

According to Karrine, Darius has been physically and emotionally abusive to her for months. Karrine told MediaTakeOut.com, "Darius wouldn't let me go out of the house, and on two [other] occasions, he beat me up. I'm working with the Los Angeles Police Department to put together documentation - including photographs - of all the abuse. So that local prosecutors can bring him to justice."

And Karrine wants the public to know that even though she may have made mistakes in the past - she didn't deserve to be abused. A tearful Karrine told MediaTakeOut.com, "I know that people on MediaTakeOut.com like to make jokes about me and my life, but this is a devastating time for me. I loved Darius [McCrary] - he was the one that I planned to spend the rest of my life with. The man that I loved and my [10 year old] son loved ... And now it's all gone."

Karrine went on - explaining to MediaTakeout.com, "I was a good woman to Darius. I cooked and I cleaned for him. I helped him through some [serious personal] problems. And I even supported him financially ... He had no right to do that to me ...."

As for Karrine's physical condition - she's recovering. Since being hit by Darius' car, her entire body is in pain - and she's on bed rest. But while her body may be damaged, her resilience isn't. Karrine told MediaTakeOut.com, "It's tough because I can barely move. But I'm putting together the documentation [and working] with the Los Angeles police to make sure that [Darius] doesn't get away with this."

I don't know, what I see is people using terms whose definitions they either have no clue about or have redefined altogether.

Socially conscious Hip Hop is good and productive. But what really qualifies as "socially-conscious"?

R. Kelly Trial Day 9: Defense Expert Contradicts State's "Mole" Theory

Defense attorneys in the R. Kelly child porn trial caught a break today as a forensic expert testified in Kelly's favor.

According to the Associated Press, video forensic expert Charles Palm told jurors that the black mark on the lower back of the man on the tape is not a mole but a result of video distortion.

Palm said since the video has been duplicated numerous times it appears and disappears.

As SOHH previously reported, last week an expert for the prosecution analyzed several frozen frames of the sex tape which revealed a dark mark on the man's back. Grant Fredericks compared the still frames to a photo taken of Kelly's back after his arrest in 2002, where a dark fingernail sized mole is evident.

Palm, compared the still frames with the same photos of Kelly's back and told jurors, "I see a black mark but it doesn't appear to be a mole." He also said the tape at the heart of the trial could have been manipulated in a matter of months. This contradicted claims Fredericks made last week which said it could be costly and timely-taking up to years to do.

As an example, he showed jurors a version of the sex tape that he manipulated, where the male and female fade in and out against the background. Palm said most of this process took him "a couple of spare hours." Though he acknowledged the tape he was shown did not appear to be altered he also said the picture quality provided no way for him to be certain.

Defense investigators also testified today that they were told by at least one acquaintance that identified the alleged victim that she was actually not sure of her ID.

In this morning's testimony, private investigator, Jack Palladino testified he believed the prosecution's key witness sought to extort Kelly in exchange for their silence. Lisa Van Allen testified earlier this week to having multiple three-way sexual encounters with the singer and a female she identified as the alleged victim. In a meeting with Allen and her fiancé Yul Brown, in Atlanta earlier this year, Palladino said Brown claimed a publisher had offered a $300,000 deal for a book about Kelly. "I assume they were trying to solicit a bribe," he testified.

Palladino admitted under cross examination that neither Van Allen nor Brown blatantly asked for money but he did say it "was a coded way to get money from my client (Kelly)."

The multi-Grammy award winning R&B singer faces 14 counts of videotaping, producing, or soliciting child pornography. He pled innocent to all charges and if convicted could face up to 15 years in prison.

You'll notice that when I post on here, I don't get into things like cussin out anybody's momma, or go on tirades about people's personal attributes (which no one knows). Unemployment Rate Hits 5.5% as 49,000 Jobs Lost

By PETER S. GOODMAN and MICHAEL M. GRYNBAUM Published: June 07, 2008

The unemployment rate surged to 5.5 percent in May from 5 percent, the largest monthly spike in more than two decades, as the economy shed 49,000 jobs for a fifth month of decline, the Labor Department reported on Friday.

Economists construed the weak monthly jobs report as an indication of the pain assailing tens of millions of Americans amid an economic downturn that most experts assume is a recession.

The labor market is continuing to deteriorate, eroding the size of paychecks, just as gasoline and food prices surge, and as the declining value of real estate erodes the wealth and credit of many households.

"It's unambiguously ugly," said Robert Barbera, chief economist at the research and trading firm ITG.

"The average American already knows that gas prices are up a ton and its really hard to find a job. Sally and Sam on Main Street are already well aware of this, and that's why sentiment surveys are lower than they were in each of the last two recessions."

On Wall Street, stock markets were down sharply in morning trading as investors saw in the weak job numbers signs that the overall economy could remain mired in trouble for some time.

The spike in the jobless rate also ratcheted up the policy debate in Washington, where the White House has pledged to veto a supplementary Iraq war funding bill that includes an expansion of unemployment benefits.

The White House has opposed the bill for imposing deadlines on the withdrawal of troops.

Among the 8.55 million people who were unemployed in May, 1.55 million had been unemployed for 27 weeks or longer.

Federal unemployment benefits currently expire after 26 weeks.

The bill approved by the Senate and facing a vote in the House would add another 13 weeks of cash assistance.

"It would show a new level of callousness by Congress, a new level of disconnect between Washington and the rest of the country, not to pass an extension now," said Andrew Stettner, executive director of the National Employment Law Project, a national advocacy group for the unemployed.

The White House argues that jobless benefits have never been extended with the unemployment rate this low, a position that White House spokesman Tony Fratto said remained in place even after Friday's report.

The leap in the unemployment rate also appeared to cool talk that the Federal Reserve might soon begin inching up interest rates in an effort to choke off rising prices for gasoline, food and other goods, and to support the weak dollar.

The Fed policy board meets again at the end of the month.

"I don't think we'll be seeing Ben Bernanke defending the dollar anytime soon," said Michael T. Darda, chief economist at the research and trading firm MKM Partners, who has worried that the Fed has stoked inflation by lowering interest rates too aggressively.

"The Fed more than anything else puts emphasis on the labor market indicators. This will make it very difficult for the Fed to take back the easing in an expeditious fashion."

For six months, the Fed has been steadily lowering interest rates, which tends to spur borrowing and investment, in an effort to bolster the economy.

As inflation fears have grown, so have calls in some quarters that the Fed alter its course.

That conversation has been amplified by talk on Wall Street that the economy appeared to be stabilizing, and banks were past the worst of their mortgage-related woes.

But Friday's report injected a substantial note of gloom into that view.

"We simply haven't had five months of net job losses without being in a recession," said Jared Bernstein, senior economist at the labor-oriented Economic Policy Institute in Washington.

The details of the report fleshed out how economic troubles that began with the fall of real estate prices and then spread to the construction industry have continued to ripple out to other areas of the economy.

Many homeowners who are no longer able to borrow against the values of their houses have been cutting their spending, shrinking sales at shopping malls, grocery stores and home improvement outlets.

That has prompted to businesses to cut payrolls, taking more purchasing power out of the economy.

Construction again led the way down in May, shedding 34,000 more jobs, according to the report.

Profession and business services - which includes lawyers, accounts, architects and management consultants - declined by 39,000.

Manufacturing lost 26,000 jobs as the sector continued its steady decline.

Retail payrolls shrunk by 27,000 jobs, and transportation and warehousing by 10,500.

Health care remained a rare bright spot, adding 33,900 jobs in May, while restaurants and bars added 11,400 jobs.

The jobs picture has turned particularly mean for more vulnerable segments of the population, with the unemployment rate among African-Americans leaping to 9.7 percent in May from 8.6 percent in April .

Over the same period, joblessness among those aged 16 to 19 climbed to 18.7 percent from 15.4 percent, underscoring why many economists predict this will be the weakest summer job market for teenagers in at least 60 years.

The White House and some economists questioned the validity of the spike in unemployment, noting that most of results from a surge in people entering the labor force.

Some suggested that this meant that the Labor Department may have miscalculated its seasonal adjustments for graduating college students entering the market, inflating the numbers of those seeking work.

"I think this move is exaggerated," Mr. Darda said, who noted that new unemployment claims, while recently crossing above 370,000 a week, are still not consistent with such a dramatic surge in joblessness.

"This is strange."

Even at 5.5 percent, the unemployment rate remains relatively low by historical measures, the White House noted.

But others said the report appeared to catch up with other indicators, like several years of weak hiring, that have made a search for a job far more difficult than the simple unemployment figure reflects.

The unemployment rate does not count people who have given up looking for work.

The percentage of working age-Americans employed dropped 62.6 percent in May, down from 63 percent a year earlier.

And years of weak hiring have made some companies so lean that they have few people left to cut.

"Companies didn't have so many people on the payrolls to shrink in the first place," Ed McKelvey, an economist at Goldman Sachs, said.In recent months, many companies have been cutting the working hours of those on their payrolls and generally avoiding layoffs, while hoping that the economy would improve.

That trend held up in May, as those working part-time because they could not find full-time work or because of slack business nudged up from 5.22 million to 5.23 million.

But that was a much smaller increase than the previous month. The slowing of that trend, coupled with a net loss of jobs, was taken by some economists that businesses are running out of hours they can cut: Now, they are faced with the possibility of layoffs.

"This is what happens when an economy grows solidly below trend for six months," said Mr. Bernstein.

"Employers cut back first on hours, then on jobs."

Yeah that sounds cool but it is a false statement. Killers- kill at all levels of volume. Half of the dudes I know who are locked down for a murder beef because they didn't move and kill in silent. Most killers I know actually moved and killed very loudly and that is why they are locked up. Loud Killers are also the reason the no snitch rule is so strong in our community. Sp cats kill both loudly and silently.

Anyway; given the right curcumstances everyone on this blog is a potential killer. One more thing - I don't have any intentions of killing that F@gget @ss whiteboy, PZ. We are having a presidential election, to elect the most POWERFUL person in the WORLD, and not only did Barack Obama get almost all of the African-American vote (which there is nothing wrong with), but 95% of the Black People who are voting for Barack Obama don't know $HIT of what he is talking about. I don't know bout y'all, but it seems a little fishy to me. But then again, most people voting for him could care less about what he does or supports, cuz at the end of the day he's part African-American and that's all that matters in choosing an effective leader to run this country.

By the way - I don't romance violence and gun play or even advocate it unless it is for self defemse. I have done and seen sh*t that you would think i was lying about if i told you. I lived a criminal life that many rappers have never lived but yet they rap about it. Now I did this by choice and not because I was broke or any of those other excuses. I hurt the Black community in ways that I won't even tell you. This is why i try to give back. This is why I don't romance violence and crime and destructive behaivoirs. I don't do drugs of any kind. i don't even drink. I try to be an example of what i would my son and your son to be. This is my way of apologizing to my people for hurting them.

However with all that being said i am a man. And I am going to do everything in my power to protect me and my family. So when I say what i say i mean it. I am not a E-thug. I am not a thug at all but i am a man who believes in protecting himself and his family by whatever means are available to me.

Personally I perfer peace and positive vibes but again if attacked I am going to attack back using what ever i can to cause the optimal amount of damage and destruction and you should do the same. If people are going to threaten you or your family then they should be prepared to deal with whatever comes out of that.

Criticizing Nas' choice of album title isn't the same as criticizing him or his album. Some people just don't get that. My thoughts on Nas are thus; He's a top 5 rapper of all time. When he's good he's really good. His last good album (IMO) was Stillmatic. He's so washed up that he's using controvery to market himself but I don't fault him for that because the alternative is to become irrelevant. At the end of the day it's a BUSINESS not a culture.

Someone said most blacks support Obama and don't know what he stands for. I don't specifically know the details but what he stands for isn't nearly as important as what he represents. Regardless the color of a president there's really little he will do to increase my quality of life. I see that job as my own. There are far too many interest groups that actually wield power in this country for MY needs to be a priority so I make the best of the situation. The impact seeing a black president will have on little black boys and girls is potentially profound. When I was a kid such a thought was considered unrealistic. Obama can't wave a magic wand and create change but he most certainly is the beginning of change and the symbolism there is enough for ME.

Georgia Is Warned by Russia Against Plans to Join NATO

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia - President Dmitri A. Medvedev of Russia warned the Georgian president, Mikheil Saakashvili, on Friday that Georgia's joining NATO would deepen the conflict between the former Soviet states.

After the two leaders met behind closed doors at a palace outside St. Petersburg, Russia's foreign minister, Sergey V. Lavrov, said that Mr. Medvedev told Mr. Saakashvili that his quest for NATO membership would not help resolve the simmering tensions in the separatist Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

"We have stressed again that Georgia would not be able to achieve this by artificially pulling itself into NATO because this would lead to another stage of confrontation," Mr. Lavrov said.

The conflict in Abkhazia has increased friction between the nations in recent months.

In April, a Russian fighter jet shot down a Georgian reconnaissance drone over Abkhazia, according to a United Nations investigation.

And last month, Russia sent paratroopers and artillery across the border to reinforce its peacekeeping force there.

On Monday, Georgian officials demanded that Russia withdraw the additional troops, as well as a Russian Army unit that Russia said was sent to repair infrastructure in the region.

The European Union's external relations commissioner, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, warned this week that the Russian troop buildup in Abkhazia could destabilize the region, which had a civil war in the 1990s.

And Mr. Medvedev said Friday that German leaders had expressed their concern to him about relations between Russia and Georgia on Thursday during his first visit to Europe as president.

Mr. Lavrov said Friday that Russia wanted to resolve the conflicts, but not with outside help, a position both leaders appeared to endorse during a photo opportunity at the Konstantinovsky Palace.

"I think that we're capable of solving all the problems ourselves, overcoming the difficulties that exist and building long-term relations," said Mr. Medvedev, who was inaugurated as Vladimir V. Putin's successor last month.

Then Mr. Medvedev turned to Mr. Saakashvili and asked, "What do you think?"Mr. Saakashvili said that he agreed and that many of the problems between the countries were "artificially created."

"Russia and Georgia are countries that are very close to each other on historical, cultural and human levels," he said.

Mr. Saakashvili, however, did not back away from his long-term goal of joining NATO.

Georgia has applied for membership, and NATO has promised that it will eventually be accepted.

Mr. Medvedev has argued that NATO membership for Georgia or Ukraine, which has also sought membership, would threaten Russian security.

Mr. Lavrov said that the meeting between them at an informal gathering of leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States, a group made up of most of the former Soviet republics, was "very calm, very quiet, no confrontation at all."

He also said that the deployment of 300 Russian troops to make repairs in Abkhazia last weekend was meant to pre-empt the use of force rather than prepare for Russian intervention.

Abkhazia borders the Krasnodar region of Russia, which includes Sochi, the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The Games are being promoted by the Kremlin as a symbol of Russia's revival after years of post-Soviet turmoil.

Mr. Medvedev also met on Friday with President Viktor A. Yushchenko of Ukraine.

Mr. Lavrov said the leaders had discussed several points of contention: the Russian Black Sea Fleet, which is based in Ukraine's Crimean peninsula; gas prices; and Mr. Yushchenko's efforts to unify the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Gazprom, the Russian state-controlled natural gas monopoly, has halted supplies to Ukraine in the past and has threatened to do so again, demanding that the government in Kiev pay market prices.

The dispute has been of grave concern to Europe because 80 percent of Gazprom's supplies to Europe run through Ukrainian territory.

9/11 Suspects Arraigned at Guantánamo Hearing

GUANTÁNAMO BAY, Cuba - Five detainees who the government says were high-level coordinators of the Sept. 11 terror attacks were arraigned in a military courtroom here on Thursday morning.

The five included Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, who has long cast himself in the role of super terrorist and has said he planned the attacks, which killed 2,973 people and set America on a course for war.

He has also claimed responsibility for some thirty other acts of terror, including the decapitation murder of Daniel Pearl, a Wall Street Journal reporter.

The arraignment was the first time Mr. Mohammed had been seen or heard publicly since he was captured in Pakistan in 2003.

He has been held at Guantánamo Bay since 2006.

When he got the chance to talk in the hearing on Thursday, Mr. Mohammed rebuked the Bush administration as crusaders and ridiculed the legal system it set up here as an inquisition.

He told the court he wanted the Americans to put him to death.

"This is what I want," he told a military judge here in his first appearance to answer charges for the terrorism attacks.

"I'm looking to be martyr for long time."

He spoke in serviceable English, improved, perhaps, by his five years of custody, including three years spent in secret C.I.A. prisons.

With a full grey beard obscuring the face that became familiar from the widely reproduced photograph of him in a baggy undershirt, taken on the day he was captured, Mr. Mohamed quickly staked out his position as the leader of the five defendants at the hearing.

He said his American lawyers were agents of the Bush administration's "crusade war against Islamic world," he chanted in Arabic (and then translated for himself), and he made it plain that he wanted to rally the other four accused men to his approach.

He was, he cheerfully told the court, unable to accept lawyers untrained in Islamic law, and he asked for the chance for all five men facing terrorism, conspiracy and other charges here in the Sept. 11 case to meet to plan a joint defense.

The five were all held in the secret C.I.A. program and transferred to Guantánamo by President Bush to face charges in the controversial military commission system here.

The request for the meeting, like most from the defense, was rejected by the stern military judge, Col. Ralph H. Kohlmann.

Mr. Mohammed did not shy away from the spotlight.

It was difficult, he explained, to establish a common ground with the lawyers sent by the American government to defend him after five years of custody.

"Then," he continued, warming to his subject, "after torturing, they transfer us to Inquisitionland in Guantánamo."

C.I.A. officials have said that Mr. Mohammed was one of three detainees who were subjected to the simulated-drowning technique known as waterboarding during interrogation, which is described by some as torture.
