Kool Herc still fighting for that building, I see.

(Pic via WP)
In the '70s, it was arson that had The Bronx burning to ashes and dust. Now? Constant threats of bloodshot-eyed, thirsty developers rubbing up their palms is what's keeping the city's only mainland borough on fire.
Investor Mark Karasick, who has YET to even buy the building himself, told Herc's camp that he'd step off if they handed over $14 million-- DOUBLE the building's $7 million worth. Preposterous. It should be a crime to be this greedy. I was under the impression that he had already purchased the building. But according to the Washington Post, as of last month, the proposed sale had been rejected by city officials, as "its financing was not viable because of rent restrictions on the building imposed by a state program that subsidizes landlords." However, the owners might possibly negotiate a deal that the city will accept, and the landlords and Karasick have been quiet on their plans for the near future.
Meanwhile, the tenants living in the building-- some of who have been there long enough to witness the first-ever hip-hop showdown the 18-year-old Kool Herc threw during his sister's party back in 1973-- are worried about losing their cheap rent and possibly even their apartments.
A crying shame. All it takes is one building, then they stretch out and cease everything around it. Investors like Karasick are going for already-existing buildings. Many build new ones.
Before "development" began, The Bronx was 75% ghetto. And after many of the new tenements have been built, The Bronx is now... 75% ghetto. Those cheap-ass buildings are built without outside fire escapes (and are instead equipped with inside "stairwell emergency exits" and sprinklers to save money) and have walls about as thin as cardboard. And rumor has it that many of those being kicked out of Brooklyn, Harlem, and L.E.S have been placed into these buildings. Section 8 and low income are also the bulk of the tenants living in these cheap ass apartments. If there was an earthquake, the new buildings would be the first to go.
So now it's been four months since Kool Herc first began lobbying against the powers that be. And four months later, they're still in the same spot. But later this month, Herc plans to have a fund raiser at the Hip-Hop Culture Center in Harlem. The aim of the event is to gather enough money for the residents to buy the building. But what about the $11 million they had back in January? They were asking for $3 million more to meet the demands of Karasick.
This is a never ending circle. All I have to say is GOOD LUCK... and that's to Herc, the residents at 1520, and all my peoples in the University Avenue area. Because if Karasick or any other investor gets a hold of this building, it's a WRAP for the surrounding area.
Reckless, Monday and Friday posts need to be the best of the week. Monday to start us off after a two day hiatus, then with a banger on Friday. Have a good weekend everybody.
The vast majority of visitors to the KING center in Atlanta are European tourists. As much as MLK did for blacks not many African Americans bother to visit the center when in Atl. I don't know if it took place yet or not but there were people calling for the Federal Government to replace the King family as administrator and caretaker due to mismanagement and poor upkeep of the center.
If this is what is going on with a place in honor of MLK imagine what the future holds for "Kool Herc's" old residence! The birthplace of "hip hop." LOL!
Herc is delirious, attention starved and delusional. This is the type of excess and grandiosity that makes you ask, "are they for real?"
How many people even care where he lived? How well are any hip hop monuments in NYC doing? So what he carried some old turntables in and out the building's elevator. Nobody cares. Herc is out for a check of some sort and nothing's wrong with that but as the proclaimed "founder" of a billion dollar industry like hip hop he should have the money to buy the building himself not take the position of making empty demands based on his own distorted sense of relevance.
If this is about gentrification and fighting for affordable housing I say the residents have every right to resist the sale but bringing Herc into the mix makes their efforts laughable. If this is about Herc's ego and delusions of grandeur I have to say, nuggah please!
If the building is saved in Herc's name no one will visit it so what's the use. I'll bet if he had 7m or 14m of his own money he wouldn't spend it on this building. It seems that the only way for powerless irrelevant people to have a sense of power is to get in the way of progress which only creates contempt.
It's embarrassing to see people constantly making self serving demands that they expect someone else to fund. It's typical and not a good look. I don't care who does it or what the cause is.
Hiphop is dead and the birthplace of hiphop is being bought off...oddly fitting
REAAAAAAL MOTHERFUCKING TAAAAAAALK IN THE HOOOOOOOOOUSE, NIGGER.

First time posting in about 2 weeks so anybody else was a fraud. Now to the comments.

Everybody knows that the Bronx is the fucking slums. It's one of the worst spots to live in the country and it's only getting worse. As traditionally black hoods go through gentrification (whites moving in) these black/latino hoods are becoming too expensive for us to live in, so you have the poorest blacks, poorest latinos, all moving to the Bronx. The Bronx is their last refuge.
-
The bronx is basically the dumping grounds of NY. It is responsible for the majority of crimes (besides murders which happens in brooklyn) and drugs in NYC. Nothing but illiterate crackheads in the Bronx. The citizens of the Bronx by themselves increase NYC's unemployment rate and welfare rates. It's sad. Might as well nuke the Bronx and start from scratch. If you're reading this and you live in the Bronx...GET A FUCKING EDUCATION SO YOU CAN MAKE MORE THAN $7.45 AN HOUR.

Reckless must have on his/her/it's "fight the power" t-shirt on this morning, but it's all good. It's good to take on a social issue once a while (in fact, the contributors end up doing it everyday really). In fact, I particularly enjoyed the posts by two of the regular contributors:
@ Nimrod. HAHAHAHAHAAA... Brutha-mayne you are absolutely VICIOUS with the truth, arent' you! So you mean to tell me you weren't bough by the whole "feel-good story" nor the sympathy, huh! (LOL) I can't stop laughing.
Like you said, it's a real situation. But the fact that the tenants have brought in Herc and are banking on his "star power" is insane. But what's worse is that Herc actually believes he HAS "star power." The desire for attention and delusions of importance and relevance is a big problem with Hip Hop artists. Herc probably homeless himself (does he even have a job), but now he think his "status" can save a building-full of people.
@ Real Talk. You have me laughing real bad this morning. You practically making the Bronx out to be some third-world country, or even some refugee camp after a tribal war. LMAO... I mean, dayum!!!
I WONDER HOW MY BRONX NATIVES FEEL ABOUT THIS??? Y'all be sh*ttin' on the Bronx like that bum was sh*ttin' on Fat Joe's CD!!! Come on, man! I've been to the Bronx and visited a dude that was pretty financially successful and just loved the scene. He lived in an old building, but by its architecture you knew back in the day it was a luxury pad. They've got plenty of those in the Bronx, which today may look rundown but are still nice.
AS FOR THE SITUATION WITH THE BUILDING, the way to go is to "section 8" it! I'm not sure that has already been considered (I'm new to this story). But that's the best way to resolve this situation: (1) the tenants keep their affordable housing; (2) the owner gets an easy check from the government and lets them worry about collecting the rent. BUT THIS IS ONLY IF HE'S NOT TRYING TO TEAR IT DOWN AND REBUILD IT.
But... yeah....
Nimrod says...

@Nimrod
If the residents of the building and kool herc can use the excuse of the building being the "birthplace of hiphop" as a bargaining chip to fight getting kicked out, then why not?
This story is getting a little bit of publicity and I believe sen. Chuck the shmuck shumer is on the residence side(in a al sharpton grand standing for the cameras kinda way).
One thing that the powerful don't like is bad publicity.

Where do you suggest bronx residence should live while they're getting they're education and the bronx is getting nuked and started over from scratch?
KICKIN' IT OLD SCHOOL...
I was busy yesterday and probably have a long day today as well, so I'll say what I gotta early.
I'm on a real old-school vibe this morning. Coming to work, I had on a Pete Rock collection I had made; vintage joints starting from "The Creator." One of my favorites of all time has to be "Mecca and the Soul Brother" and the remix at that.
AY NIMROD (if you're still on) this is right up your alley.
The other day I was having a little brainstorm about my history with Hip Hop, and I'll break it down like this:
1) For my age and maturity, is it right for me to still rock some of the hardcore joints that favor nothing but stupidness and foul images? I listen to a variety of music - jazz, neo-soul, R&B, (ol girl has me into fusion nowadays.) But how do I... or how do we (others like me such as yourself) still listen the Biggies, Pacs, and such??? (and yes, I for one have plenty of 50 Cent/G Unit records that I like).
2) The brainstorm led me to identify what elements in hardcore music that I (a mature Black man that is worldly-conscious) still like and am attracted to. I won't list them, but I wonder if y'all would take a try. Meaning, WHAT IS IT ABOUT HARDCORE HIP-HOP THAT STILL APPEALS TO SENSIBLE, MATURE PEOPLE? The answers might shock you.
3) Thirdly, as I was listening to my Pete Rock and CL joints, it dawned upon me that I was appreciating it the same way I do jazz and Motown: LIKE VINTAGE MUSIC. And that's what it is!!! So, for that kid who keeps directing his posts at some of us "old heads," I actually will let you win the argument you so desperately want. There should not be any attempt to revive 90s Hip Hop... because there's no need to be! It has gone into that "vintage music" category.
On the most part, those 90s greats wouldn't even sound right on today's radio, and that's cool! (Although that Joel Ortiz cover of Kool G Rap sounds quite nice on Hot 97 lately). So, I can kick back and enjoy vintage Quest as I'm ripping down the highway in the dark of night and just get lost. The production, the lyricism, the feel... absolutely amazing. That's how I do with some jazz or Motown.
So my question for that kid is this. In 10 years, will you be able to do the same with your Young Berg's and Soulja Boy's???
1) For my age and maturity, is it right for me to still rock some of the hardcore joints that favor nothing but stupidness and foul images? mature sensible people take the music as entertainment, no different then a movie. we understand its just music and either its ill or not, these dumb muthaphuckas is the ones that really think 50 is gonna body something or jeezy is still getin birds. so their non indentity having arses choose to immulate what they favorite rappers do and get locked up which in return makes "gangsta" rap more "gangsta" then what it really is (i.e g-unotakilla).
If it was up to me I would burn down that building and piss on the ashes. Then build a mini mall over stop of it that would only sell fried chicken wings, liquor, rims, blunts & dutches, clothes, and jewelry.
ps - all the worker in the mini mall would be big booty strippers

On that Bronx issue, some are suggesting that there is a widespread effort to "nuke and rebuild" the place. Is that true, and is it really that harsh? Forreal, I'm asking w/o sarcasm implied. (I know y'all don't like me talking up my profession, but I do get involved with building and development and "we" kinda don't look at it like that.)
On the humble, perhaps something is going on in Bronx that actually is harsh like that, I'm not gonna say I know. Reckless wrote: "And rumor has it that many of those being kicked out of Brooklyn, Harlem, and L.E.S have been placed into these buildings."
Being kicked out and relocated to the Bronx like some Katrinians??? Not exaclty.

Yeah, I dig your logic: music is entertainment no different than movies; and people are entertained by "action flicks" filled with plenty of gunfire, pyrotechnics, and "bad guys getting blown away."
So it makes perfect sense to draw a correlation with Hip Hop music. I'd almost close the case... but something tells me that there's something more to Hip Hop that it can't be TOTALLY compared to Hollywood flicks.
Hip Hop has gone on to be identified with the Black culture, whereas action flicks have not. Whether we like it or not, Hip Hop has been a voice of a people - whether it be our struggles, our ambitions, or (sad to say) what exposes our flaws.
In that sense, there is a "realism" to it - not like the type that would have young kids going out and emulating what they hear on record (as you put forth very well). But there is a realism there. AND, when it comes to the criminality, it happens to be a genre that rewards actual criminal pasts.
So, I revisit the brainstorm and ask myself why do I, why should I consume something with such powerfully-negative images?
(I'll be back in a minute...)

Damn a lot of hate and generalizations for the BX and Kool Herc this morning! I feel the building should be given landmark status and be off limits to demolition. The BX may have a lot of slums and rough patches but I know some prosperous people that live in the X also. Can't generalize a whole borough like that. Also I feel a lot of these wealthy NY Hip Hop figures like Jay, Diddy, Fifty and more should contribute to the cause. Other regions also and even regular 9 to 5 Hip Hop lovers. Instead of blowing money on nonsense they could spend it on preserving this historic location. Perhaps it could be renovated and turned into a museum of sorts.

I was simply asking Real Talk a question in regards to his comment,I did not inject my opinion of what I think is going on into my question.but I would say that it is easy for someone who's not going through what the residence are going through to say "is it really that bad"
And I never said I didn't like you boasting,I said that I find it funny.
I live in Philly and a while back. big investors are expanding the city's convention center. Before the expansion took place there was this big debate about demolishing all the land marks that stood in the way of "progress". Long story short, the landmarks the white people were fighting for is no longer here . . . so if the prestigious white folks couldn't get there way, I seriously doubt that Kool Herc's building will be saved. They should use all that money they raised and relocate every in that building to new apartments or better yet get them there own homes.
Before I forget shout out to PZ for finally getting to meet the Pope. Too bad PZ had to share his many stories about getting raped by his priest. I know he felt like a bitch crying in front of his Holiness
Id like to start the day with this quote because Im still lmao from it.
"I heard he's going to terminate himself so good luck on that," Banks told SOHH. "I predicted that too. So, next time you in the dark and you think about blowing your noodles all over your nice little paint, just do it like Nike."
ROFL
Just do it like Nike, bahahahaha.
Sorry, but I really could give a damn about Sedgwick and you all can backpack it out and pretend you care but you really dont. Just because some crackhead threw a party in the dusty basement of some project and called it hiphop doesnt mean crap to me, true hiphop which to me means lyricsm, b-boyin, graff, djing, all together didnt come till the 80s. Its called progress. No offense to anyone on that, not even Kool Herc and I feel for the people that will have to find affordable housing, especially in times like these, but Im tired of this topic.

Then no-harm, no-foul fam. If it ever came off as "boasting" or worse, as lies, then let me correct that one-time. I know we've got some real characters that come on this blog - from college professors to gangbangers - and I don't want to come off as another actor.
About this story, I really never heard it till now. And, no, I'm not in their situation so I can't relate personally. I was actually asking "Is it really that bad?" Because some portray it (though figuratively) as a "nuke the Bronx" situation and "throw them out and relocate them" like refugees.
As we should all know, this is an investment opportunity, which means someone is trying to get paid. It's a business/money situation, therefore the first thing the people doing it are concerned with is "how much money we gonna make from this?" We can't expect them to all of a sudden turn into social workers and change their priorities.
I agree that the tenants should fight it if they will have no hope of finding affordable housing elsewhere. Typically, the property owner informs the tenants well in advance (at least a year) that their leases will not be renewed come next cycle. Technically, the property owner doesn't have to keep them there "till Jesus comes." He can either raise their rent or just terminate the leases. What you always hope for is that he exercises some principle and ethics in doing it.
What I don't agree about this story is using Kool Herc and banking on his "star power" and that bullish that it's the "birthplace of hip hop." Negro please! Let the tenants fight this with the city. This happens all the time. What do you think we're going through here in Brooklyn with the plans for that new arena.

Landmark status???
For what??? Because a teenager that spun records used to live there???
Landmark status is given to the homes of people like presidents and civil rights leaders (and the most notable ones at that). An entire committee votes on it and the neighbors sign petitions to honor that historical figure, usually after their dead and gone but not always.
Who da f#ck is Kool Herc??? He'd at least have to be the CREATOR of Hip Hop music, and he damn sure aint that!!! I'll eat my words if they've already made it as a landmark, but I strongly doubt that. If they did, there would be no contention right now. The city would be the one fighting those developers, not Kool Herc and the tenants.
And, oh yeah, they have preserved the homes of certain great American authors and poets such as Edgar Allen Poe in Baltimore. Still, Kool Herc's apartment is not the same.

Google a demographics report on the Bronx and see how the real statistics stack up against your gerneralized perception. You're clearly uninformed and probably have never been past the South Bronx that's if you've ever even been to the Bronx at all. Believe it ot not there are affluent sections and people in the Bronx...ie: Riverdale, Throgsneck, Pellham, and Eastchester...just to name a few.

We can put Herc down, debate his arterial motives, and be negative all day. But the truth is that these residents are actually trying to be responsible for them selves without government assistance. They aren't marching and protesting, they are rolling up their sleeves and going for theirs. So as amateurish as their tactics may seem I still have to take my hat off to these people for their hard work and efforts to save their own. Lets not forget that they have been able to raise $11 million on their own. I have nothing but respect for them and their take on life. At least they aren’t just rolling over and getting fucked like the good old residents of Harlem did and are still doing.

First of all let me ask you, are you a Blackman? You seem to oppose anything involving Black figures but strongly defend anything regarding white people.
Yesterday you called Kanye a stupid ass for saying "George Bush doesnt care about Black people" and you seemed to defend, of all people, Bush. The election stealer and unfounded war starter.
Sedgwick should be a landmark beacuse yes Herc DJ'd in a basement and looked what the movement turned into!!! A way for many Blacks, Hispanics and others to make a fortune and care for their families!!! Also alot of Hip Hoppers might be out doing crime if Hip Hop didnt give them an alternative way to make money.
But I take it you feel Edgar Allan Poe's home is worthy of being landmarked?!? Whats the difference? SMH
@ Atheist.
"Would you agree that if the residence in the bronx(the working poor class)are in a war with the very rich and powerful(elite class)that they should play every card that's available to them?"
Yes, the under-privileged should pull every card they can; it's just that it should be something that has a chance of working. (Reference my last post on the landmark status.)
The situation in Brooklyn is not that different. In both cases, rich developers are going to clear some housing and businesses to make room for another project - one that is quite lucrative.
Here, it has been a war between the developers (team owners, businesses) and the city itself. The city approved the deal but put a lot of demands on the developers.
What happens to the common person is this. You're correct that there are many owners, and they're all getting paid for their properties. But many of those owners have their own tenants - and given the area that is being affected, the numbers are probably the same as that Bronx apartment building.
The owner (of a brownstone) gets paid and simply tell their tenant, you have to move by year's end. That tenant has to find a new place on their own without anyone's help nor with any reimbursement. So that's the same as the Bronx. What may be different is whether or not there is alternative affordable housing, or even if the tenants want go through the hassle of moving. I'M NOT CATEGORIZING THEM AS LAZY NIGGAZ... this same thing happens in Manhattan when developers wanted to build ultra-luxurious condos that caters to the Hollywood types. The tenants fight it, and the developers sometimes kick in some cash to get them to move.
FOR THE BRONX SITUATION:
1) The tenants should continue fighting with the city and contend that there is no other affordable housing. That may force the city to allocate section 8 properties and to help the tenants find housing.
2) If the developers get impatient, they may want to throw some cash at the tenants to help them make up their minds.
There's a few ways to go about it. But once the developers get the city's permission, the building will be condemned, awaiting demolition, and they will be forced out. AGAIN this happens all the time!

@Atheist
I think the real life difficulties these residents face should be enough reason to get OUR attention. Introducing the building's connection to Herc takes away from the real issue here in my opinion. Where do these displaced people go? To hell with Herc and his ego. He's using a very serious situation with serious consequences to self promote. Instead of talking about residents who may end up homeless we're talking about Herc.

I listen to hardcore rap when I'm in the mood. It takes me back to a time when I was younger and wild. Music sets a mood for me. Lyrics are good but the vibe is more important. Back in the day I'd listen to PE on my way to "bringing the noise" Although the message was positive the vibe made me feel violent for some reason. As much as I enjoy hardcore rap at times I don't think it belongs on the radio. Call me a hypocrite but I have always been two people. A gentleman when people are watching but when the lights go out... watch your step! I'd like to see the underworld and all things related go back to the shadows where they belong. Hardcore rap that promotes gangsta activity included. We can't afford to make wrong seem right and vice versa. What gangsta rap did was publicly confirm some very negative stereotypes of black folks. Although the percentage of hardcore criminals in our community is relatively small. The popularity of gangsta rap caused a lot of harmless people to adopt the style and swagger of their more sinister brethren.
@The Layer
Peace Blackman. No hate for Herc but it kills me when people in leadership roles squander the opportunity in pursuit of limited personal goals. Herc's connection to the building should be a side bar. I'd respect his effort more.
On another note, rent control borders on socialism. In a free market if you can't afford something you can't have have it. We can't have it both ways. I have relatives who have lived in the same apartment for over 30yrs because it was cheap. I know of people who save their apartment in the PJ's for their kids for the same reason. In my eye the lure of affordable housing makes people complacent when it should provide opportunity to stack paper. I think a 5yr limit should be placed on it. Let's give everyone a chance to get on their feet. Or should we expect the state to take care of people from the cradle to the grave? My relatives could've owned a house by now but instead they are stuck at the same level they were in in 1971.
I see both sides of the argument. All I can say is I'm glad the roof over my head is not a subsidy.

Detroiter killed in rap battle
George Hunter / The Detroit News
DETROIT -- Police are looking for a Westland man who killed a rapper this week after taking offense to something said during a rap contest.
The incident happened Monday in a home located in the 180000 block of Bradford on the city's east side. Police say there was a rap battle, in which participants come up with insulting rhymes aimed at their competitors.
Police say 28-year-old Antoine Tramble became angry at something a 27-year-old rapper said, so he left the home and then returned with a gun. Tramble opened fire, killing the man, police said. The victim's name has not been released.
Tramble then fled the home and escaped in a blue conversion van, investigators said.
Anyone with information is being asked to contact Detroit Police Homicide at (313) 596-2260; or the anonymous Crime Stoppers hot line at (800) SPEAK-UP.

****************************************************************************
(Chuckling... then leaning back in my chair... taking a big sigh... and then cracking a smile...)
Wassup, Layer. How you feelin? All I'll say is that I won't take personal offense at you questioning my Blackness. After all, this is an anonymous blog with no pictures, so... All we have to go by are our comments and views. I'm pretty sure this is not the first time you've read my comments on the sohh.nyc blog. You may recall that 2 days ago I was engaged on a discussion on the "Black Power" movement. But I'm not gonna go at your head because I know how important it is to use temperance and sensibility on this blog - or else you may end up getting worked up about dumb sh*t.
1) The question isn't "Whether or not React is a Black man." Instead, the question is "What defines Blackness" and "How did I allegedly lose my Blackness based on my comments?" (And please, ANYONE CAN ANSWER THIS.)
2) I detailed why I considered Kanye West a "stupid-ass" for his Bush/Katrina comment. I believe I expounded on my viewpoint quite extensively. But what was the "politically-Black" thing to say in that situation? What, nevermind logic and reason, agree with Kanye just-because? And demonize Bush in that specific instance just-because?
3) By that, one would essentially be defining "Blackness" as agreeing with and standing by anything on the sole basis that a Black person is involved. But when other races do the same, we say it's wrong don't we?
4) I don't care one pebble of rat sh*t for Edgar Allen Poe. The only reason why I know of him is because that was standard high school literature. If you read my post properly, you would've seen that I was questioning if Kool Herc should be granted "landmark status." First I said that it is usually given to people like presidents, civil rights leaders (Black people!), and the sort. But then I corrected myself and said that there are others who've been given "landmark status" for whatever reason. Still, I didn't think Kool Herc deserves one.
If so, then Russel Simmons, KRS-1, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Preemo, LL Cool J, Doug E. Fresh, should ALL be given "landmark status" for their childhood homes. Right?

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't most of the residents in the brooklyn deal condo apartment owners, and not owners of whole brownstones who rent out apartments?
This question is besides the point of the whole conversation.I just disagree with you that the using of kool herc and the buildings status is ineffective because it got the residents this far to where the developer is considering making a deal with them.

Why I question your Blackness is because you are OVERLY critical of several Black figures. Its fine to evaluate ourselves as Black people but when you're saying negative things on a regular basis its a problem. That makes me think you are either...
1. A self hating Blackman like an oreo, or
2. A white person with negative and or racist views towards Blacks anyway.
Nobody says you have to agree with everything all Brothers and Sisters say. That would be being gullible. I disagree with many myself. But at the same time don't knock us all but never criticize anybody else either. And Bush needs no help being demonized. I think with the thousands killed on 9/11 and in Iraq and Afghanistan he's doing a great job on his own.
Also I'm not sensitve. And I'm fully capable to thwart anybody trying to "come at my head." So we can keep it respectful or I can prepare a tongue lashing.
Perhaps some of the artists you named do deserve landmarks too. Especially LL. Now I pose a question for you. If Kool Herc isn't the creator of Hip Hop, who is?

@ LAYER
Let's vow to keep this civil, especially because I'd rather discuss other issues.
When discussing the Sedgwick Ave tenants, I disagreed with the suggestion that the building is/should be given "landmark status" just because of Kool Herc. To that you posted the following:
"First of all let me ask you, are you a Blackman? You seem to oppose anything involving Black figures but strongly defend anything regarding white people.
Yesterday you called Kanye a stupid ass for saying "George Bush doesnt care about Black people" and you seemed to defend, of all people, Bush. The election stealer and unfounded war starter."
1) You questioned my Blackness because of Kool Herc and "landmark status." WTF??? So if I said, yes, Kool Herc's apartment building should be granted "landmark status" it would've been all good??? I'd still be Black in your eyes??? Or at least you wouldn't have "asked"?
2) You said that you question my Blackness because I am "overly critical of several Black figures." Who might that be, and based on the context, how have I been overly critical of them??? I'm not going to make you find and repost my comments; I'll retrace my own steps.
The other day I posted excerpts of an article that was mildly critical of Barack Obama. The gist of it was that he hasn't contributed as much to charity as he claims. Someone corrected me on the figures, which I admitted, and yet was still able to state the issue. HOWEVER, I threw ALL politicians under the bus (which was the point of the article) including Clinton, Gore, and the Republicans as well. FURTHERMORE, I am a supporter of Obama's campaign - especially just the very concept of a Black candidate having such a good shot at the presidency. But I balance my sentiments with a dose of reality - not falling for "hero worship" and remembering how the country works, even in 2008
3) Question: Do you believe that Nimrod is Black? (Mind the sarcasm) I mean, he "says" he is and sure talks like it. But that dude
is always talking against the likes of Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and Louis Farakhan - our Black figures! He's always slamming Black people who act out in niggodry, calling the rap game "minstrel show," etc. (again, mind the sarcasm). According to your criticism of me, THERE AIN'T NO WAY THAT NIMROD IS BLACK!!! Why, that dude's is probably a klansman!!! And you know what else, I bet he even know the names of a few White American poets and authors!!!
4) As for the Kanye/Bush issue, I covered that quite extensively - and you must've read it to be able to quote that today. If necessary, and I hope it isn't, I'll just repost my explanation. But Bush being wrong on Iraq has nothing to do with him (1) taking all of the blame for Katrina, and (2) deserving of being accused to "not care about Black people."
5) I'm not taking the time to answer this because I'm "emo"; to the contrary, I told you I'm not offended. But the reason I'm taking you to task for your comments is:
(a) to show how nonsensical it is to question a fellow Black man's "Blackness" because something so narrow-minded and petty as me not vouching for Kool Herc's "landmark status."
(b) to challenge the shallow definition that many of the other readers may have about "Blackness." Not just that they have to talk a certain way or be a gangbanger to be considered "Black" (which happens here daily). But essentially what you insinuated by your brief criticism and the subsequent explanation: being Black requires the vow to agree and stand with Black individuals no matter what the case at hand, no matter what the details nor the logic at work.
My point is, go ahead and say that you disagree on the Kool Herc sh*t, even the facts surrounding landmarks. But don't go the "you must not be Black" route just because. Putting it mildly, that's just not the most logical conclusion to draw.
Oh, and by the way, I think OJ was guilty.
(to be continued...)
@Atheist
5yrs is just a # I pulled from the top of my but I feel a time limit should be set. Public assistance of any sort should be just that... Assistance. I remember watching kids on the first day of school in the PJ's sport the latest $200 jordans that came in a brief case of some sort. The break they receive is not for them to engage in a premature lavish lifestyle but lets be honest isn't that what happens too often?
I have no problem helping people who genuinely want to do better. It's the people who know they have no plan to do anything other than get a free ride that messes it up for everybody.
There has to be a way to weed them out or risk having the "baby" thrown out with the "bath water."
