I for one feel sales are VERY important while also feeling sales has NOTHING to do with my personal preference.

As a matter of fact most of the artists I like didn't do huge #'s. Common has been one of my favorites of all time and he's never done #'s. What too many people do is attempt to impose their personal standard of what is good and bad hip hop on everyone else. Mathematics is the universal language.

Sales matter because this is a business. I like some of the acts that sell a lot and others I can do without but ANYONE who does #'s is a plus for the BUSINESS and more importantly they are responding to the demand of the marketplace.

It's tough for some of us to accept that our taste is not in accordance with the majority so we seek to devalue their opinions and preferences to feel good about ourselves. I don't engage in that. I like what I like regardless of how much it doesn't sell and I feel no need to devalue the accomplishments of others to feel good about MY choices.

I think Soulja Boy lacks talent like everyone else but his success is an indicator to me of how much the marketplace has changed and how far out of the loop I am. He exists because THEY chose him. I know that's tough to swallow but it's the reality with all this music we find unattractive.

People play music for me all the time and ask for me to pass their CD to my contacts in the biz and I tell them all the same thing.

It was all “Is Brroklyn in the House?”

If we wanted to talk about community empowerment and politics then we talked about it from a rebellious spirit that really understood the realities of Reganomics and urban degradation and resource deprivation (Grandmaster Flash - don’t push me because I am close to the edge), Bush 1 economic oppression and Urban unrest ( Everything going to be alright by Naughty by Nature and do you remember the rapper Parish with his scope on Bush) and Clinton Welfare reforms (Tupac’s I ain’t madd at ya – speaking to people engaging in self reform but it you put the song in perspective of the time you had welfare reform in conjunction with the time the song was out) . If we wanted to talk about the police’s relationship with the Black community we had NWA saying “fuck the police” and KRS 1 saying “buck-buck – that is the sound of the police - buck-buck – that is the sound of the police”. And when wanted to see the sure poetry of the art people like Rakim, Slick Rick, and Big Daddy Kane showed us how that is done.

So it always hip hop’s boldness that impressed me. It was the Black uniqueness of hip hop that impressed me. The business of the art never entered my instructors’ (my brother and New York City at large) curricula. It was miscast to talk about that. So anyway, I just wanted to share how I look at the art. I totally reject the way these cats access the art, today. In my eyes what the fuck does one’s business model have to do with their ability or inability to spit on the mic. It is so fucked up that some misguided child the other day called 50 the goat and their incredibly informed and misguided characterization of 50 is based on today irresponsible way of accessing the art, which is about revenue. 50 will never be anywhere close to Rakim in terms of ability. Those two are not even on the same planet. Rakim is atleast 5, 000 times better than 50 but because 50 is almost a billionaire these dumb niggas are making him the goat. (SMH- INSANITY)

To me those who promoted unit sold have greatly contributed to the demise of the art. These rap cats today are so interested in selling units today that it has totally compromised the creativity of the art. This is why it sucks today. That is why I like Common. To me he just stays true to the elements of the art. His music as Kanye, Busta Rhymes, Missy and Outkast’s music does not sound like anybody’s music. I mean I dig that. That is what I like and regardless of what their accounts receivables and payables looks like to me that is what the art is all about. The art really is not about giving a fuck about the establishment’s standards. The art was always about fuck the establishment. 50 cents ruined that. He made being judged by white boys as signal of approval an essential part of hip hop. This is one of the major reasons why the game is so fucked up now. He is such an unconscious Uncle Tom that he made white folks judgment an essential part of the game and many of our dumb black asses bought into that bullshit.

G-Unit will be silent on this one; trust that. I am actually glad that they will be silent to because the beef shit have gone too far. However, one thing I can say about suge is thayt when he finish a beef it is finished and final.

Anything with a beginning has an end and hip hop is no different. I totally understand your position but it more addresses life in general when I was merely discussing the relevance of sales in music.

Strictly from a MUSIC standpoint since that's what I think we're discussing Sales are crucial. The people who sell keep the lights on for the people who don't and if by chance you happen to prefer artists who don't sell then you owe some degree of gratitude to the acts we find annoying.
