Live and direct, Boogie Down Productions is LARGE!!!
------> KRS ONE “Criminal Minded ’08,†Produced by DJ Premier {LISTEN}
Listen all you little readers 9 and up who listen to Soulja Boy (Damn he put Sister Souljah to shameâ€"and he doesn’t even know who she is). You must listen to the LYRICS. Even some of you 17-year-olds will not understand, because your ears are not conditioned to comprehend messages in rap songs. Mmm kay?
“Cuz the world is so hood/ you must always be ready to let it blooooow/ I rather peeeeeeace/ but these rappers won’t let me so here we go/…God knows I try to live non violent/ But rappers be too defiant no doubt/ They make me wanna try this new magnum out/ They be draggin them out/ cause of death: magnum going off in the mouth/ What yall talking bout you better walk it out/ Yall start mumbling when that hawk is out/ … Stoppin the violence is what I’m all about/ Stoppin the violence is what I’m all about/ But you raise your fist to Chris I’ll… blow you out like a birthday wish.â€
FIYAH.
I highlighted the “violent†lyrics in this song because … just because.
Many will say that with the hard lyrics in this record KRS is contradicting himself with his newly replenished Stop the Violence Movement, which first took flight in the late ‘80s. But you can hear the explanation throughout; it’s clear that many aren’t respecting the positive vibe he’s trying to distribute… well maybe that’s because these so-called “rappers†don’t do their homework so they don’t understand who he is or what he represents. Which leaves KRS no choice but to take it back to that Criminal Minded ‘hood language. I still bang this album from time to time, btw.
KRS first launched this Stop the Violence Movement shortly after the second half of Boogie Down Productionsâ€"DJ Scott La Rockâ€"was killed, and this organization later birthed the 1989 “Self Destruction,†{peep vid} which featured some of the biggest East Coast hip-hop stars of that time... when NYC was one big, violent, war zone slum.
The latest edition of Stop the Violence includes contributions from acts such as 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg, Fat Joe, Cassidy, Talib Kweli and femme fatale MC Lyte. As of February 9th, cornball Nelly had even stepped into the studio to show love.
Check the Myspace page.

That KRS jump off is hot!!! I know some of the younger hip hop fan will not understand what KRS is trying to say...because lyrics are so simple today talking about the same 4 topics on every song, When you mention the best mc's you hear the same names tupac and biggie like hip hop started with them and know mention of KRS,RAKIM BIG DADDY KANE... This is th only industry that has no respect for the ones that came before them..People need to go and talk to some of the godfathers of hip hip or READ A BOOK to find out the real reason why they really started this thing we call HIP HOP!!!!
I'd Rather Hear This Type Of Stuff On The Radio Than T - Pain. I Think KRS-1 Needs To Do A Collabo W/ 50Cent & Kanye.
I Think All Old Skool Rappers Need To Do Make A Combined Effort To Support ,Educate & Instill Pride In What Hip Hop Is All About. Let Alone Where It Started & Let The Kiddies Know To Respect The Older Heads. Not Throw Them Away. Casting Them To The Side As A Washed Up Rapper.

NOW THIS IS THE SHIT THAT I MISS....NOW THAT'S HIP-HOP 4 ALL U YOUNG HEADS. THAT'S THE MUSIC OUT OF NYC THAT I REMEMBER.....SFLA!
Comes hard like 86?!!! LOL! It's 2008!!! I never understood the love affair with KRS. His 1st album was his best and it's not a classic. Good album but no classic. His claim to fame is he beat MC Shan (whoop tee fucking do) in a battle, oh and let's not forget Shan's 14yr old sidekick Shante. LOL! Don't judge this champ by his competition. LOL!
His flow was very Dr. Suess but his delivery was powerful. In all fairness, Poetry, My Philosophy, Black Cop and The Bridge Is Over were HOT for their time but lets not get carried away with the accolades today... Please.
Just imagine if a rapper were to use a fake Jamaican accent today as much as KRS did back then. Some people think he's Jamaican still. LOL! He'd be the laughing stock of hip hop. LOL!
What killed hip hop is new talent doesn't get the chance to shine or develop because we're consumed with yesterday and pay no attention to today. Where's the young hot talent? Will they ever get a chance? KRS was 19 when he dropped. Thank God it was 86 because in 2008 he'd have to compete with a bunch of grown ass men acting like kids. LOL!
Okay. I must confess. I posted without listening to the new song cause I assumed it would be wack and you know what? I was RIGHT!!! LOL! His flow is as stale as ever and the track was wack. I know Premier can do better but I'm sure KRS insisted on that sleepy track to accomodate his sleepy flow.
Where's the Sandman when you need him?

@Nimrod....youre a lame. No one has stopped the young dudes frm shining...they just lack the talent to shine! And for your info Criminal Minded is a hands down classic....dont be ignorant....just quit listening to hip-hop, coz your comments sound really lame. There is opinion and then there is silly ignorance...and your not the former
A SELECT FEW OF OLD SCHOOL RAPPERS GET A PASS... and the verdict is still out whether or not KRS-1 gets to keep his.
(just back in the city from a trip to Miami...)
We all know that most old school rappers have this complex of feeling entitle to being called "legends" and being immortalized JUST BECAUSE they were around back then. But then again, Hip Hop heads are also responsible for creating this complex.
BELIEVE ME when I say that there definitely are those who deserve their pass. And definitely, KRS deserves his pass. He has put out memorable and impacting records in his time. So, he gets to be graded on a curve for his flow and for the production.
ALL IM SAYIN IS we could do without the whole "I'mma put all the young kats in their place" vibe. Dude already got his pass, he can just fall back. As for the "violent" lyrics... scratchin my head and just overlooking it. And the whole "we gets money" talk... you still got a pass.
But dude better just stay in his lane and keep himself where people can appreciate him (actually the memory of what he did way back when). And if these 80s kats aren't either producing or running labels, SHOULDN'T THEY GO GET A REAL JOB???!!!
damn 86 i was just a baby then couldn't be no more then a couple of months i do remember the self destruction song though
o dang my bad wat up ny niggas
^^^
um...no the verdict is not out on whether KRS-one gets a pass...he is a hip-hop legend in stone...only in soulja boy circles is it debatable
MOST 80s/90s RAPPERS ARE TOURING IN WESTERN EUROPE RIGHT NOW TO PAY THE BILLS.
It is very hard to stay relevant in a game that has changed so much - not to mention whose quality has been terribly degraded. I understand that KRS-1 is doin what he has to do. I hear him on radio and TV interviews all the time. HE IS AT HIS FINEST as an "ambassador of the music." I thought he was tough when he came on Bill O'Reilly - truly intelligent and knew how to articulate his point of view. So yeah, there's definitely a place for KRS in 08 Hip Hop. He gets a pass but sometimes gets dangerously close to having it revoked. (But I'm referring to things beyond this particular track)
Compare what he's doing to what rappers like Rakim, EPMD, Gangstarr, and my n-word Masta Ace is doin right now. Sometimes it's good to lay low and live off your Western Europe tour money, ya know.
THE BEST NEWS I HEARD WHILE OUT OF TOWN was that Nas' album is in jeapordy and L.A. Reid is finally starting to realize that have taken a gamble. Props to all who "prophesied" that. Poetic Justice. They should just retitle it to "The Nigger Who Cried Wolf."
PS @ Reality Check. HAHAHAHAHAAAAA.... my man, you're STILL on that sh*t???!!!
^^^
why should he stay low...his last album sold over 100,000 copies so clearly he still has a fan base

Easy, there. I for one definitely appreciate his contributions and would say that he hasn't done anything to embarrass himself or the Hip Hop legacy. But don't get bent if others don't put him on that pedestal (cuz that's stannin'). If someone says, KRS aint done sh*t in Hip Hop, then yeah, you can take a shot.
As long as KRS keeps from slick talk and doesn't proclaim himself the sheriff of Hip Hop thats gonna clean the town of all wack young rappers, then he stays OK. Look at Nas - Nigger bout to have his pass suspended! Shouts to Masta Ace and Guru. Kats like that are grinding it out in Europe. The

Dudes like you are hilarious. If I'm wrong on any point expose it. You're the same type of cat talking about sales don't matter then you say he sold 100k. LOL! Who bought it?!! Next week you'll be telling me this wack single went gold. The hypocrisy around here is funny as hell. Everyone's nemesis is Soulja Boy. LOL!
Give it up already. KRS had a few hot songs and battled a poor excuse of a rapper 22yrs ago. He's not great he's just one in a long line of MC's who had their moments.
moresickaMC says... why should he stay low...his last album sold over 100,000 copies so clearly he still has a fan base

If KRS-1 can still sell records, more power to him. But "laying low" means for him to not go hard at the "young wack rappers" and act like he's gonna "clean up the game." The track on this blog is heading that direction. And dude don't need to do that.
AND NO, IT'S NOT "FIYAH." Damn, I can't stand when y'all go ape for no reason. You appreciate the track because it is KRS-1, but quit actin like it's the greatest single of the year.

Rise and shine SOHH. I'm at work now so I haven't actually had the time to listen to this joint yet, but I will. I'm glad to see KRS reinvigorating the Stop The Violence movement. We are definitely still suffering with a lot of Black On Black crime so the message is needed. I'm glad to see a pioneer showing longevity and branching out into other ventures such as The Temple of Hip Hop Kulture etc. Like somebody else posted above we need to bridge the gap between the so called old school artists and the new generation so we can have a strong united thriving Hip Hop scene!! That way when imbeciles like Bill O Reilly try to attack us we can all shut him down from the youngsters to the veterans!!! My brother Un once told me there is strength in numbers so don't let them divide and conquer!!! Www.myspace.com/layerissolidarity!!!!!

I can't stand KRS-1 because unlike 90% of the other old heads, he just can't move on with his life. He feels the need to be jealous that today they make more money than he ever did and he's mad that he only sells 40,000 records even with his gimmicks to promote his cd's by bashing new talent.
-
KRS is the original Nas. He is the perfect example. He says hip hop is dead because of the music, yet if you listened to his cd's, you'd see he always rapped about money and guns, and even had that shit as his album cover. What a gimmick. HE FUCKING BLEW UP BY DISSING ANOTHER RAPPER AND ENDING HIS CAREER. He attacked this man for no reason, didn't even know him like that, just blindsided him, and yet you people buy his bullshit?

To the idiot that said New York is one big slum, you're an ignorant ass nigger. NY real estate isn't depreciating because IT ISN'T a slum. Every borough besides the shithole they call the bronx, gets better and better (real estate wise) and the city is glowing. Even crime dropped since people are making more money than ever working legit jobs. Know what you speak off nigger.

No disrespect but... NIGGA WHAT!!??!!
I'm sayin that that's what most of them are doing. If KRS can sell records in the States, more power to him. The very MINOR issue I pointed out is that he don't need to position himself as the "sheriff of Hip Hop" that rids the land of all "young wack rappers."
He hasn't gone there yet, but the track is heading that direction. Otherwise, he has a pass and is appreciated for his previous contributions. nuff said.

aight honestly which rapper u think can play that role as the sheriff of hip hop if they had 2 be one honest opinion
@South Central Born
Hip Hop doesn't need a Sheriff it needs diversity and balance. There was a time when all forms of the genre co-existed. Militant, gangsta, political, abstract, etc. Now everyone's a tough guy or drug dealer or gangbanger or take it to the left and cooning. It;s pathetic.
I said it earlier this week. I don't wanna hear new music from old school cats. I want them to tour and perform their classics. That's their strength and it's timeless. Slick Rick and Dougie Fresh did "The Show" in 84 but that shit is timeless and a performance to see. It's like that with a lot of cats.
What hip hop needs is more youth doing different things to attract young consumers. Who's really gonna buy KRS' album when even Jigga is having a tough time selling? Is he serious?
@ SOUTH CENTRAL BORN
Frankly I don't think anybody can because there's not one artists that is universally respected (because there's too much hate). Everybody luv Biggie now, but I don't think it woulda been the case if he was still here in 08. Rakim is supposed to be the most revered - but he's touring Uzbekistan in order to keep up with his mortgage. The artist closest to that "sheriff" status in 08 would've been Jay Z (I know Chi-town just spilled his coffee) and look how much hate he gets.
The more reason why KRS should try it. Soulja Boy will come out with a diss track TOMORROW. He dont give a f#ck who KRS think he is. If the young kats aint checkin for Rakim, what makes KRS think they'll listen to him. Its a different world in Hip Hop than it used to be 20+ years ago. And the kids who can twitch and wiggle a new dance that earns them ringtone sales are now sitting in the same room as "mighty" KRS-1. (For the record, I don't really care for dude, but there's such a thing as "respect" in Hip Hop)
I love Hip Hop!! I need to go cop a lot of CDs man. I used to love that KRS album with Step Into A World and Ah Yeah, I forgot the name of it. Damn he was droppin jewels.
@ nimrod
u right it was a time when hip hop had diversity and everybody supported different things but now its more 1 sided if u not talking bout how rich u are or how many cases u caught or a new dance den its consider wack. even i recognize that and im a young cat im only 21
And for all you hypocritcal stans always calling some rapper a snitch... Did you know when Scott La Rock was killed the entire BDP cooperated with the police to get the killer convicted. I'm not condoning nor criticizing what they did I'm just putting it out there.
I just read the quote about the magnum from his song which I couldn't finish listening too and shook my head. Why do people talk tough when they know they keep 911 on speed dial?

'What hip hop needs is more youth doing different things to attract young consumers. Who's really gonna buy KRS' album when even Jigga is having a tough time selling? Is he serious?'
That has to be one of the most ridiculous things I've read in a while on this site, apparently the 100K people that bought KRS’ last album. This highlights one of the problems with hip hop, too many people want it to be just assimilated with youth culture so once an artist reaches a certain age their supposed to suddenly stop making music which is garbage. The fact is KRS has a fan base and so what he's not moving Kanye numbers that doesn't mean he should just stop putting out new music for his fans that want to hear it. If you're not feeling it then fine go support whoever you want but it's illogical to tell an artist that is passionate about their music to fall back just because you aren't feeling them anymore. How come r&b, jazz, and rock artists can have careers that span decades but in hip hop you're supposed to only be a 3-5 year flash in the pan and then disappear? That's bullshit and that's the problem. There are 5 billion people on this planet and over 250 million people in the states so even the biggest selling artists that go multi-platinum aren't even tapping into the fan base they could have. If KRS can still pack shows overseas and push enough records at an independent level and make a sizeable profit and never have to get a regular 9-5, why should he stop just because youth-oriented fickle-minded hip hop fans in the states aren't feeling his music? Artists make music for their fans that enjoy it so and if that's not you it doesn't make them irrelevant it just means they’re not making it for you.
KRS One has always proclaimed to be a hip-hop gatekeeper so y should he stop now? the consensus is hiphop is wack rite now, so his message is as relevant as ever...but I guess weak fans like react ar satisfied with soulja boys hits
@EST
NEWSFLASH: Hip hop originated with the YOUTH and was at it's peak a YOUTH movement.
I don't know of many R&B or Rock artists or even Country artists from 20 to 30 yrs ago who are succeeding with NEW music. The pattern is to live offf your catalogue. Aretha Franklin is STILL paid to sing R-E-S-P-E-C-T 40yrs later!!! Likewise with the Rolling Stone who still get paid to sing "Satisfaction." There are many more examples. If you're gonna follow the blueprint follow it to the letter!
I wish all the has beens and never was would stay in their lane.
Hip Hop is dying because adaptation, progress and creativity are SHUNNED!
End of Story!
Enough of this talk about somebody delivering a message. Rappers like KRS been delivering messages for 22yrs! What good has it done? No one's listening. Give somebody else the podium. You had your turn!
Go tour and pay your bills like all the other cats from your generation. There's nothing wrong with that. Let the next in line have the shot you got... What's wrong with that?

I co-sign this entire post. The problem with younger people these days is that they think they've lived and done more than us old heads. There comes a time in your life when you'll be an old head and you'll want your experience to be appreciated. Hip hop doesn't only belong to the youth. Hell, most of the 80s rapper started out when they were already in adulthood. Very few were high schoolers. I coach my son's basketball team and I swear all of them think they've played in the league, retired and are now coaching instead of being 6th - 8th graders learning how to play. I'm not going to honor some young cat telling me what I should do, how I should live and what I should say. Why should a veteran MC? The one thing I've learned as I've gotten older is that the things that I thought I knew weren't always right. That's why I can't honor some of the things I've read here today. Don't mistake intelligence for knowledge. They are two different things altogether.
Lastly, KRS is one of the mc's on the Mt. Rushmore of hip hop. His catalog, his flow and his message has been memorialized and honored by many mc's both old and young. To say that he hasn't put out classic albums is short sighted. Criminal Minded changed hip hop. Before that it was Dougie Fresh, Run DMC and others. Cats were bringing that grimey street shit before that. Even the classic Paid in Full was more about the skills of the mc and DJ than it was about the gutter like Criminal Minded. When By Any Means Necessary dropped it was the most anticipated joint of it's time next to RunDMC's Raising Hell thanks to My Philosophy dropping on Yo MTV raps. The buzz was off the charts. Point is, before you start spouting off about things you've heard or read you have to actually have been there. That's the difference between a youngster with knowledge which I respect and someone that's been there who should be respected.
GIANT co-sign EST!!! I couldn't have said it better myself my man.

I meant to type that they were not bringing that grimey street shit. The only crew that I can think of that match BDP for grimy street rhyming was Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Sure, they had some radio joints but they also had tracks like
"White Lines" and "The Message" amongst others.

A few questions for all the supporters of geriatric rappers clogging the lane.
1; What is the golden era of rap?
2. What was the average age of rappers during that period?
3. What was the average age of the consumer at that time?
4. If that period was truly the "GOLDEN" age as people call it shouldn't we revert to the formula that worked then?
5. As the dominant artists ages surpassed 30 the interest in hip hop declined. Coincidence?
6. This isn't about skill. This is about marketability. Who do you market +40yr old rappers to?

NEWSFLASH: Hip hop originated with the YOUTH and was at it's peak a YOUTH movement.......
Wrong!!!!!
Hip hop at it's peak in the late 80's and mid 90's was as adult as it came. KRS rapped about non violence and humanism. PE rapped about the oppression of the Black race. Rakim rapped about his skills on the mic. N.W.A. rapped about gang banging and killing. Ice Cube rapped about the streets of South Central. Biggie rapped about hustling, getting high, sex and partying. Tupac rapped about thug life. Nas rapped about his hood and the streets that birthed him. The Native Tongues movement was about spiritual enlightenment. Jay Z rapped about hustling. Black Star rapped about the improvement of the Black race. Wu-Tang rapped about the gutter and grime of street life. Redman rapped about getting high. DMX rapped about theft and murder. I want you to find a youth movement in any of those topics. When you do, I'll cede you this argument.

I do agreee that some old school acts are timeless and don't need to be in the studio making new music. But on the other hand, I have to disagree, because I still want to hear new music from Masta Ace or Bid Daddy Kane. Even though nobody really brought Masta Ace last 2 albums them shits was still better than 99% of the bullshit made by these newer rappers.
My real hip hop head know what it is!!!
Me personally, I liked the song, KRS is a legend in his own right, so I'm not gonna get in2 all of the who deserves a pass, or why MCs from the Golden Era R still performing new songs, but I DO miss the diversity in Hip Hop like what Nimrod was talking about, & I think it's really messed up that the industry chose 2 focus on one style of rap & put it on a pedestal, so 2 speak, 2 the point that "Gangsta Rap" has evolved in2 what I like 2 call "Dummy Music." What's really sad is that the youth have been conditioned 2 thinking these so-called "Gangstas" actually live what they speak

A few questions for all the supporters of geriatric rappers clogging the lane.
1; What is the golden era of rap?
The late 80's up until 2000.
2. What was the average age of rappers during that period?
Mid to late 20's
3. What was the average age of the consumer at that time?
18-25
4. If that period was truly the "GOLDEN" age as people call it shouldn't we revert to the formula that worked then?
Because of Napster, broadband internet and recordable cd's. Don't forget that the only place you could get these joints was from the local record store and the bootleg man in the flea market back in those days.
5. As the dominant artists ages surpassed 30 the interest in hip hop declined. Coincidence?
No, not a coincidence. The market became saturated with bullshit dance raps and too many unoriginal cats doing the same shit. At one point, the west coast had so many clones dropping gang banging joints that you couldn't tell them apart. The east coast had a bunch of Rakim wannabes. The average age of the club goer went down so the audience became a little less sophisticated. The real hip hop head just stuck with the ones that they knew could deliver like Jay, Nas Cube and Dr. Dre. Look how many Pac albums dropped with recycled lines over different beats. How about diddy(no caps) soiling Biggies name with so many asinine joints.
6. This isn't about skill. This is about marketability. Who do you market +40yr old rappers to?
The same place you market 50 yr old rockers. They must stay fresh and inventive like Jay, Nas and Cube. How many rock bands from the 80's disappeared only to be rejuvenated in the past few years. If KRS comes with a fresh sound, he'll find an audience. It's the nature of the business.
February 21, 2008 10:08 AM
KRS is one of my main influences just like other 80's MC's who's material i had the opportunity to absorb first-hand, via my older bro's, radio shows, and eventually video shows........
honestly, unless a person is a student of the culture, i really don't think too much of the younger generation can appreciate the lineage of the genre...... nice blog!
KRS IS THE FUCKIN BLACK SEA BISCUIT. IF THERE WAS EVER A NIGGA NOSE, KRS IS THE FUCKIN POSTER CHILD OF THAT SHIT.

I respect your passion and I recognize yours as a true love of hip hop but I respectfully beg to differ on a few key points.
1. The Golden age of hip hop for most is somewhere between 86 and 95 give or take a year.
2. The average age of artists in THAT period was was late teens to mid 20's.
3. I abosoluteley agree on the age group you provided for the rap consumer/fan.
4.. I could be wrong but I think that's where "freshness" lies so tappining into that age group artistically once again may provide the answer. One thing we know is the way things are is NOT working. Regardless of downloads and so forth there just isn't a sustained interest in any artist or album. The last to pull that off was GRODT by 50 Cent and how many years ago was that?
5. 50yr old rockers have a fanbase that reflects them. Rap is so different. For one the primary artists are black while 85% consumers are white. The artists are old while the primary consumers or young. The artists are from urban centers while a majority of the fans are from suburbia. What works in other genre's does not necessarily work in hip hop. It is unique. All we can look at is what worked for us. That doesn't mean cats like KRS should hang up the Mic but it does mean he should focus more on touring. His base is already established. Let the newbies live.

A few questions for all the supporters of geriatric rappers clogging the lane.
1; What is the golden era of rap?
Answer: This was the time when Hip Hop was more diverse, every rapper had their own identity & style(swagger).
2. What was the average age of rappers during that period?
Answer: 19-25
3. What was the average age of the consumer at that time?
Answer: 14-25
4. If that period was truly the "GOLDEN" age as people call it shouldn't we revert to the formula that worked then?
Answer: Yes, That way all of these cookie cutter ass rappers can realize how crappy truly sound
5. As the dominant artists ages surpassed 30 the interest in hip hop declined. Coincidence?
Answer: I feel the industry began 2 promote the notion that 30 year old rappers would not be able 2 sell due 2 their age.
6. This isn't about skill. This is about marketability. Who do you market +40yr old rappers to?
Answer: The audience who would still pay 2 hear the 40+ rapper, which would probablyconsist of people in their 30s & over who still listen 2 Hip Hop
The difference between the music back then and music now is the streets dictated who was hot. Now corporations and paid off DJ's decide. Nobody cared on how many units was sold. Different artists had different styles. For the one who said KRS went at MC Shan for nothing you must not remember, it was because of the Queensbridge song. BDP took offense that Shan was saying rap started in Queens and not the Bronx.
I disagree with the Golden Age argument. 86-89 was pretty much the beginning of hip hop in it's current incarnation. Sure, it was around before that but it never made it mainstream until Yo MTV raps got a better timeslot in the the late 80's early 90's. Hell, BET wasn' t even 24 hrs back then. As far as the old heads still being fresh. Jay is still trend setting, Cube still sold Gold last year independent and Dre beats still perk up ears. I'm not a sales numbers stan but I use that to point out that they still have an audience. If Jay isn't plat right now for AG, he's close and his listening session on MTV was amazing.
My only point is, I was there during all of the changes in hip hop from UTFO's Roxanne being one of the first tracks to hit mainstream radios #1 spot to Jay being a cultural phenomenon. I'm not speaking from speculation or things I've read or heard through someone's opinion. I'm giving you an honest assessment of the game from my own objective eyes. KRS changed hip hop with Criminal Minded. Before that, no one was talking about gun play on wax and they definitely weren't cussing. There were no explicit lyrics labels on cd and album covers. I didn't even know that shit could happen on wax before that disc. KRS has a place in hip hop history somewhere near the top. Hip hop changed when it became less innocent because up until that point, it was nothing more than a gimmick. Kids started believing that shit and wanted to see it for themselves.

February 21, 2008 10:11 AM
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Lets not equate youth with lil kids. No it's not rated G stuff but it is what some young people in their late teens and early 20's experience while even more front like they know.
Rebellion and misadventure are the preocupation of the young. All of the artist you mentioned were YOUNG by today's standards and most were young by any standard. I don't understand your point. Perhaps the youth back then were more advanced? Does that negate the fact they were young?
@Ernest Frazier
You are aware that Rakim dropped in 86, Kane in 87. If you erase 86-89 you erase Juice Crew, KRS, G Rap, Run DMC, LL Cool Jay, PE, Slick Rick, NWA, and I can go on forever... Those are the creme de la creme! with the exception of KRS. LOL!
That period produced some of the sickest lyricist and the minimalist beats most regard a "real hip hop." 86-89 is THE foundation of modern hip hop.
I can't even phathom some idiot's dissing Kris... The Teacher? And what's this, Criminal Minded not a classic? Are you serious.... I must be on the wrong site because the last time I checked KRIS is HIP HOP... Remember, Rap is something you do Hip Hop is something you live... Yo..Tell that clown "NIMROD" that the propaganda he's ushering out isn't working here... He must be from down south or something... No disrespect to the South, though (even some true heads down there know)
Thank you Ernest Fraizer, you are one of the few on here with an open mind that is making logical sense. Nimrod do your history, with the exception of jazz every other musical art form from the states can be connected to youth culture but they never ended with youth culture; from soul to rock and roll to alternative to grunge. Sure the Stones can still rock shows performing Satisfaction but as someone that enjoys their music I can assure you their legacy wasn’t built on just one song. You keep missing the point because clearly you are not or are no longer a KRS fan; he doesn’t have to create a fresh sound to find an audience because he already has one. He knows who his market is and they are the ones supporting him. Young people are not the only ones spending money on this planet so older artists don’t have to cater to younger fans when there are other fans with much more disposable income. Just because the fan base is not as large as other artists doesn’t make it invisible. Norah Jones sells just as many records as Beyonce yet she drops very few videos and is stays far away from the media spotlight but she’s no less relevant to her fans because they seek out her music just like the KRS fans do. We live in an era where technology has made for places just like this where fans talk about music, sales, and relevance when just a few short years ago there were no websites posting weekly record sales because at that time it was all about the quality of music. Now every single week that sales are posted there’s always somebody talking about how such-and-such artist flopped or who outsold who as if sales have ever been a barometer of legitimacy (i.e. Vanilla Ice) meanwhile artists with core fan bases who’s sales don’t even hit the top 75 are doing just fine without the benefit of a major.

I agree with the first part of your post. Shan never said hip hop started in Queens. He was reminising about how hip hop started affected Queensbridge. KRS knew this but he was mad because Mr. Magic and Marley Marl wouldn't play his S. Bx anthem on the radio so he wrote a diss. It worked and the rest is history.
Now if you really wanna know the truth at the same time cats were jamming in the parks in the BX they were doing it all over the city. You had Grand Master Flowers in Brooklyn and the Disco Twins with the 36in "Earthquake' speakers in Queensbridge.
The Bx has a lock on the origins of hip hop and as a result early pioneers not from the Bx are swept under the rug even though their contribution was major in it's own right.
Reckless is from the Bx so he forcefeeds the rest of us garbage like this new KRS track and lots of bias revisionist history. LOL!
@EST
You don't get it. I don't have to do my history. It's amazing the asumptions some of you make about the next man while pontificating. KRS's new song is TRASH. Yes he had some good songs I believe I named a few. I guess because I won't throw myself at his feet and grovel I should do my history. I own his first 4 albums. If I'm not impressed to the level that some of you are that is MY right. Get over it.
I think his flow is and has always been SIMPLE. His gimmick was a fake jamaican patois that played out when real jamaican music started penetrating the airwaves. Shabba anyone?
I was there and I know my history I just don't look at the world through rose colored glasses.
Like it or not he is best known for dissing Shan. They even tour together to exploit that fact. That may be a big deal to some but it means little to me.
KRS and any rapper from back in the day who has no NEW fans don't need to make NEW music. The old hits will suffice and I'll check em when the old school tour hits town.

Peace.
Did you know Larry Davis robbed and killed black men at the instruction of crooked cops? He was than a rat. He worked with the police and did their dirty work. That's how and why he shot them when they came to arrest him. He knew they were gonna take him somewhere and kill him.
Hip Hop embraced him because he shot six racist cops but selectively overlooked the damage he inflicted on the community for the police. He should've never been elevated to hero status but that's what happens when entertainers masquerading for street cred start taking on heroes.
I got the call last night from Shawangunk state pen that he was murdered in the yard. The prison is on lock down right now. I don't celebrate his demise but I'm not surprised.

Like what are artists like Krs, LL, Jay, and so and so doing thats preventing any "new artist" come out? Also in the "golden era" of hip-hop the artist were more diverse than now....Now every rap artist has basically the same flow, topics and beat selection. How many rappers out there sound like Jay-z/Jadakiss/Fabolous clones with all this "swagger" LOL. In the "golden era" you had Epmd, Tribe, NWA, Gangstarr, Krs, Heavy D,SaltNPepa, Black Moon, 2 Live Crew,Too Short, Geto Boys, even Sir mix-alot(wow)..And everybody had their own distinct sound. Thats one BIG reason why records aint selling..originality and that doesnt matter if you young or old.. Kanye blew up becuz he was FRESH, different AND made good music..

All these old ass rappers is cloggin the industry, and the new niggas they signin is trash. But one thing that has happended, is, the age limit for hip hop has been taken off. You got NEW rappers comin out that are already over thirty, old rappers stayin around past 35. I think its good for rap, cause then hip hop can be seen as a true genre, not a youth fad.

if you listened to the krsone/marley marl album, there's a song called "kill the rapper" where krs says they never found who killed scott
@ Nimrod the Golden Age of hip Hop was called the Golden age because older cats like Public Enemy Brought something new to the table that the young people needed to hear.
cott Sterling (March 2, 1962 – August 27, 1987), better known by his stage name Scott La Rock, was the original DJ for the hip hop group Boogie Down Productions.
Sterling, a social worker, met rapper KRS-One in 1986 at the Covenant House group home in the Bronx where KRS was staying. The pair, together with rapper D-Nice, formed Boogie Down Productions. Their 1987 debut album, Criminal Minded, was an instant hit, and has since appeared on numerous "greatest albums" lists.[1] [2]
Sterling met an untimely and violent death in 1987. His friend and BDP associate Derek "D-Nice" Jones had been assaulted by some local hoods, and asked Sterling to try defuse the situation. The next day, Sterling and a group were riding in a red Jeep Cherokee with a white fiberglass top on it when they came to the stoop where the offending parties lived on Morris Avenue in the South Bronx; Sterling’s intention, along with the group, was to try to Defuse the situation, but one of the hoods pulled a gun and began shooting at random. The bullets ripped through the side and top of the Jeep. Sterling was hit in the neck. Critically wounded, he was driven in the Jeep speeding to Lincoln Hospital which was less than a mile away. He was conscious and talking to the doctors as he was wheeled into the emergency room. His friends were telling hospital personnel "Don't you know who this is, he is Scott La Rock, he has a big album coming out!" Sterling then stated to the doctor that he was feeling cold, and tired. At first it was thought that his injuries were not life-threatening, and his friends saw him wheeled away into the E.R. They went to the diner on Grand Concourse to wait a while before they come back to check on him. Unfortunately, Sterling died in the operating room within one hour of being shot, leaving behind an infant son, Scott Sterling Jr. The man who shot him was finally arrested a few years later and brought to trial in the Bronx County Supreme Court.

You’re right Nimrod; there’s no need to make assumptions considering we are complete strangers. Notice I never said anything about this particular song by KRS, which is neither part nor parcel to my perspective. I was just merely addressing your statement that KRS should make music that caters to a younger crowd and my point is that he shouldn’t have to do that. If he has enough fans to support his music without regardless of which artistic direction he goes into then his fan base will remain consistent and may even grow. Youth culture is an important group by far from the most important. Like I said before, artists make music for the fans that enjoy it and clearly it’s not for the ones that don’t and they shouldn’t feel the need to succumb to the pressure of being all things to everybody. We all have our preferences and the fact that you don’t prefer his current brand of hip-hop doesn’t make it any less relevant to the ones that do enjoy it. I own a restaurant that makes fusion cuisine and do very well with my customers but I’m not going to change my menu to cater to people that enjoy high calorie, high fat foods like McDonalds and KFC. I do what works for my business and my customers and don’t worry about what others that don’t cater to my customer base are doing.

Now it's he didn't die the day he got shot. You said no one was ever arrested.So thats not true either?

Krs-one is irrelevant. Nobody under the age of 30 listens to that guy. He's as relevant as Run Dmc or the Beastie Boys. Aint nobody checkin for them niggas. All the old rappers are stuck in the pre golden era sound, you gotta update. Shit, I'd fuck wit a 9th wonder/Just blaze/Kanye/ J Dilla type track before a Premo/Pete Rock type one any day. The newer niggas is more in touch with what people wanna hear. Just cause them niggas used to be hot in the 80s or early 90s dont mean them niggas still got it like that.

@u rite nim
yeah, that's incorrect; where did you get that story from? do you think you would be up and talking after being shot in the neck? the boy was unconcious and never came out of it; there was an article in an old source where people who were there like krs and mc serch spoke on it; if bdp spoke to police and someone was arrested, then what was his name and how long is his sentence?
everybody has a place in hiphop even the walk it out cats. hiphop is diverse and thats what makes it so special. I would rather have younger kids talking bout walking it out rather then talking about blasting you away with a magnum. stop being ignorant. soulja boy makes no sense but what young people do. as long as he aint talking about killing and fuck bitches and hoes, he just looks like a normal teenage kid. Stop asking people to do what they don't becasue it wont happen. I personally think Nas should make more up tempo songs becasue I have all his albums and they're talking about different topics which I can appreciate but how can we ask d4l or franchise to do something different when we're not asking that of anybody else. Nas even tried crunk music with back down and it was terrible. Most so called "tight lyricists" won't step out of their comfort zone and they have been in the game for years so how can you ask a 17-21 year old KID to step out of their comfort zone. They're gonna do what it takes to sell money. now once we as a public start back listening to the nas, talib kwelis and mos def's then thats what wil sell and that's what will be on top. this is not the case. Its up to us to decide what gets airplay so stop blaming artists becasue they only make what WE ARE LISTENING TO. love yall peace.
Kush City, just because you’re not checking for KRS doesn’t make him irrelevant to the ones that are. What is so hard about leaving space for everyone’s preferences? What ever happened to individuality or is everyone supposed to be clones and listen to the same music, wear the same clothes, drive the same cars and eat the same food?
lmaooo@Kush^^^^^^^
i just felt like posting that shit cause it sounds funny
Kush City, you talk about cats under 30 like they are the only ones with an opinion that matters. People under 30 only represent less than 25% of the buying public so are you trying to tell me that the other 75% with money don’t matter? That’s ridiculous. There is a market for everyone regardless of what the people you know are listening to and checking for.
@u-rite nim
Thank you. I grew in NY on hip hop. That dude relied on his interpretation of a song on KRS' album. I remember the news reports. D-Nice and others testified at the trial. That's the truth. Let the other dude argue about what day Scott died. Some people refuse to be wrong.

I dont mean the "buying public", I mean the audience Krs one wants to reach. Who listens to this guy?? What is the point of him still rappin?? Obviously niggas aint fuckin with him like that right now. Niggas talkin bout Soulja Boy's wack ass, Whats Stoppin Krs from goin back to the Bronx and find some kids who really spit?? Gettin some hot beats, CURRENT beats, and makin some fuckin hits to restore the feelin' old niggas always CLAIM existed back in the day. Nope, he'd rather drop his old ass soundin records, that nobody is paying attention to, and bitch about hip hop aint what it used to be. They is the same type dudes who cry about not gettin paid,gettin bad deals. They dont know how the industry works. The music aint gonna be in 1987 forever, or 1997, or 2007. It changes, and if you dont change you get left behind. Krs's kids prolly dont even listen to that nigga. And its not even about age, its about relevance.
@South Central Born
The legendary question is a good one. There are many MC's I consider great but there's only a feww legendary MC's. First off, they have to stand the test of time.
People say Criminal Minded changed the game and I just don't see it. Fear of a Black Planet changed the game. Raising Hell changed the game. Straight Outta Compton changed the game. Wu Tang's enter the 36 Chambers changed the game. There's a few more.
I think longevity. good stage performance, strong following (better known as commercial success) are all key elements of a truly legendary artists. The lovers of wack artist can talk about the streets all they want but there's no stamp like commercial acceptance and success when it comes to creating legends.

"new york is STILL one big, violent, war-zone slum. and jersey is just one violent, war zone slum."
Fool, New York is yet again ranked in the top 2 cities IN THE WORLD. It has a lower crime rate than practically every big city (if there is another big city in this country). Check our real estate prices while the rest of the country is still recovering from the subprime mortgage mess. It is the capitol of EVERYTHING that matters in America except politics. Where the fuck are you from, country ass bum? Even the public school education system is doing better than the majority of other cities, and it's bad by our standards. New York is ranked first in kids passing AP exams, where does your city rank?
And Jersey is a State, not a city asswipe. Camden and Newark are sore spots but it is still the state where kids recieve great education, and the real estate out there ain't bad either. Most of the real estate is still probably worth more than where you come from. Jersey also sends more of it's kids to college than most other states, so it can't be that bad, dickhead.

LOL.
I don't know why Black people are the only one's on Earth who vilify their artists for doing what is only natural- growing older.
You look at classic rock radio. Groups like Led Zepellin, The Rolling Stones, Ozzy Osbourne, et al are able to enjoy careers well into their sixties and seventies. Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, The Eagles and Ringo Starr have all put out albums recently that were very well recieved. Only Black people look at an artist, and say, " Ah, he's old..."
I think a lot of this stems from the fact that most Blacks don't have a strong male figure in the home. They perceive all older males to be failure's, like their own fathers- and that's really sad. The Bible teaches that there is nothing "new" under the sun. Older people have knowledge, and experience, which combined equal wisdom.
Yes, the energy, vitality, and fresh beauty of young people should always be appreciated. But to look at people like pieces of fruit, and say that after an arbitrary amount of time, they should no longer be able to pursue their dreams, and or careers is asinine.
Emceeing just happens to be KRS's REAL JOB! It's not written anywhere that just because you're young you're supposed to be "given a chance". You make your own chance by coming to the table with skills. A lot of younger artists in hip hop- and a lot of young people, in general- were never taught that, apparently.
Young people have to realize that hip hop is still OUR culture; you kids were born into it, and now you manifest some aspects of the elements, but hip hop is something my generation CREATED because we didn't want to take part in the 60's Motown culture of our parents. We created our own NEW thing. As long as this younger generation continues to take part in what WE created, instead of creating a music, fashion, and cultural sense of their OWN, then yeah, we have all right to DEMAND recognition and respect. Big up KRS, and all emcees, b-boys, dj's, and artists from THE REAL SCHOOL!

First, Wat Da Fuck is u talkin bout?? Chill out wit tha theories, nigga. I got a dad, he aint a failure, and Krs one is still boring. Are all the old Motown girl groups supposed to comeback because amy winohouse is sellin records?? If the nigga aint hot right now, then it is what it is. We was born into hip hop just like the old heads created it, you older niggas have no right to artistic expression, muthafucka. Just cause YOU dont like it dont mean somebody else dont. Your own theories are workin agaisnt you,lol. You old heads sound like the really old heads who be like, "These young whippersnappers with they crazy music and big pants, IN MY DAY things was different...." Sit the fuck down with the hatin. Like I said, if Krs was that in tune to what was hot in the streets right now, he wouldnt be cryin on every hip hop documentary cause he aint gettin no love. Plenty of rappers is still gettin it in over the age of 30, and get love from the younger crowd.
@EST
I think you misunderstood me. I don't want KRS to make music for young people. My preference for him and all the other artists from his era to stick to doing what they do best which is performing their hits.
Also, when it comes to hip hop sales the demographic varies from 11 to 30 Get the picture? Part of my beef with old cats making new music is the subject matter is sometimes explicit despite being marketed to KIDS. Hip Hop is unique in the way it is marketed and to be quite honest, in what the lyrics CONSISTENTLY promote. 90% of what's out there is explicit, illegal, immoral and so forth. I'm a grown man so it doesn't affect me but what about the the little kids who listen? I've said it before, look at the HS girls on 106 & Park screaming for grown men like Jim Jones. That ain't cool man and THAT's the bulk of the fans. All the old fans and artists are selfish and only concerned with what they want but you guys are in the minority and in no way should you dictate the trends, especially when the bulk of what old cats like is not right and exact.
As the ages of rappers increased the more explicit the content became. The industry knew the problem this posed but hid behind people like you. MTV bailed on hip hop despite Yo being it's highest rated show. Why? Because they knew they were open for attack for promoting the exploitation of blacks. Instead BET took up the mantle and you already know you must be a TOM to criticize anything or anyone black so under the cover of blackness Viacom which also owns MTV still WON while blacks who think only of their own selfish needs become supporters and apologists for a system that does more hard than good.
@Jesus^^^^,
lmaoo, i could've told you all the info you discovered from a white scientist on television about 10yrs ago....... and i was 17 then.....
i understand your blindfold has been removed, but please fam, whites, blacks, all races have their vices, no need to blame one race for fucking everything up....
theres been Whites who've contributed positively in the world and there has been Blacks who've been more destructive to society than constructive...
whats the overjoy about? whats gonna change now that truth is revealed? in terms of the white race, what do you think the whole revelations was about......
i'll end it there, Peace to All i'm not Pro-Black nor Anti-White, just Anti-Devil, and if you havent noticed, there are Black Devils too

man i try 2 be neutral but wtf u sound ignorant as hell yea hip hop was tight back in the 80's im not gon deny but it went in different directions in time hip tends 2 evolve with whateva is going on at the time even though i was still a baby in 84- 86, it was all bout lyricism, in the late 80's early 90's it was all bout social injustice , and real street problems dealing with life mid 90's brung the mafiso rap brought by big late 90's early 2000 its all bout bling its going in full circle nigga its coming back so calm the fuck down .

Today's hip hop is trash, and you young folks think us oldheads are just h8n to h8. Naw, that's not the case. We are seeing something that we built up with good positive values(for the most part) being turned in to a coon show. Wit fuckin monkeys runnin around sayin nothin. NOTHIN!! My kids listen to old school hip hop. I give it to em all frow N.W.A to Kane, Jungle brothers to Geto Boys. You know what these albus had..CONTENT. I am conflicted in this arguement because I love to see brothers come up, espescially hood niggas, but when I drive past and see 6 year old girls poppin they ass to booty meat. I have a problem. Fuck this ringtone rap, but the majority of new rappers are so shallow they cannot even begin to put together and album without talkin about guns, drugs,pussy or cars. Yea I still love Run DMC (r.i.p JMJ), when I was 14 if DMC said"shoot a nigga" a nigga might be dead. There was killing, going on in the mid to late 80's and early90's.Maybe more than now, but the rappers still had CONTENT. Ther is very little in the game today

I know you saw the Grammy's. Beyonce and Tina Turner performed. Tina's voice is stronger than Beyonce's and some argue Tina danced circles around Beyonce despite being 70. Guess who's more marketable? Guess why? YOUTH.
Why do you think entertainers lie about their age? Youth is crucial to all forms of entertainment. Of course there are always exceptions. Blessed entertainers enjoy public demand until they die but that is the realm of SUPERSTARS. KRS is not one.

Nimrod for you to tell KRS to stop making new music is the dumbest thing ive ever heard in my life. Should Stevie Wonder and Prince stop making new music too? Nimrod your arguments are laughable. I think you just like riling up people for your enjoyment. If KRS wants to make new music he will, and your continous whining wont stop over 100,000 people from buy his records like they still do.
The only way we are going to settle this is by having the Old True School battle the finger snappin NewJacks at A 2008 FreshFest.
Let the competition take place in a nuetral zone like "Chicago" or "Detroit".
This new generation is nothing short of sacrilege mutant crack baby bliss.
Diddy, if you reading this please promote this event A.S.A.P it will be the reincarnation of Hip Hop!
Peaceeee - You Suckazzzzzzzzz
@Wolves
I'm younger than KRS. LOL! Don't be mad because I'm not running around like I'm 19 when I'm not. I don't google shit and I don't spell check asshole. Are you in awe? Juveniles? If only hip hop had any juveniles left. It's filled with old niggas like yourself who act like kids and criticize me foe acting and talking my age.
You're washed up like your hero KRS. Yeah I said it. LOL!
LOL @ the "give the young rappers a chance argument" Kane,Kool G Rap, Krs,Rakim, Slick Rick, Redman, Das Efx, Nas, Biggie, Big Pun, Mobb Deep, Wu-Tang did any of the rapper "ask" to be LET in the game when other rappers were dominating the art form HELL NO THEY BUM RUSHED THE FUCKING DOOR OPEN........any one on this thread saying "we need to give the young guys a chance†doesn’t know ANYTHING about Hip Hop. If the young cats want it THEY HAVE COME TAKE IT FROM THE CATS ON TOP!!!!! That’s how Hip Hop works; stop making excuses for rappers with no talent trying to get over. I don’t remember Biggie asking any west coast artists to stop selling so many records so he can get on!! SHM young cats are spineless these days! No backbone.
And KRS ONE is a GOD in Hip Hop that’s INDISPUTABLE!! This new song is cool but the lyrics are classic KRS to complicated for the 2008 crowd.
@PR From Queens
You got a point. Nobody's gonna give up their spot you gotta take it. BUT that's hard to do when the business at the highest levels is lazy and gimmick driven.
When those great MC's you named came along there was still real A&R's in the game. The labels did THEIR job. Then the trend went to gimmicks and clones of what worked. As big as PE was no one tried to come with a clone. It was a different time. In theory what you say is right but in application it won't work.
Oh, and KRS is not a God. His lyrics aren't too complicated in the new song either. They're just boring.
@Moresickamc
KRS is NOT Stevie Wonder or Prince. Not by a long shot.
I'm out!

Aye nigga I agree I said that shit before!!!! That bitch corporate America really sucked the life out of Hip Hop.It got everybody fucked up real talk! This is why rock n roll and country thrives on the charts. Hip Hop is going down the drain slowly but surely. It's no support for the shit no more. The listeners get in the blogs and run it through the mud, artist beef over stupid shit these days, all these damn labels merging etc. KRS One is a legend what this dude is saying is nuts. It's like saying Tim Duncan shouldn't go to the hall of fame because his style of play is boring. But he wins championships!! Same thing, it's evident. Kris is one of the dopest Mc's man period. KRS One is recognized by all.But Hip Hop is dead! Actually the spirit of it is dead. In a minute it's gone be the new Folk music.
? ! ?
This is Premier in 2008? Sounds fucking boring. This is not the premier beat that I remember. More of the new skool keyboard and a slow beat shit. And KRS just sound bored with himself. Sorry, this track PALES in comparison to RETURN O THE BOOM BAP
