Fabolous says "There is No Competition," but When Will he Bring the Actual Competition?

fab_mixtapeGG.jpg

This is the latest Fabolous mixtape with the DJ Drama Gangsta Grillz series, which I heard has some crack juice joints on it.

But this is for the streets.

When I think of competition, I think of not only what you can do on a mixtape, but the kind of material you can produce mainstream-wise. Fab said some time before the release of his 2004 album Real Talk (think the Just Blazed-produced "Breathe") that he was going to switch his style so that he could perhaps shake the "for the ladies" image he'd been given. He didn't. Back in April-- when his From Nothin' to Somethin' was still on the brink of release-- I said it was Fab's "last chance to show and prove" before his “chick-friendly” label was written in stone-- and the only thing he showed us with this album is that he is not capable of giving us a thorough hard core album, and that he can only stick with what has worked for him in the past-- cute girlie songs and a few hard joints.

In addition to this, From Nothin' to Somethin' would have been a flop if it wasn't for the Ne-Yo-featured "Make Me Better." That Jeezy-featured "Diamonds" was god-awful swagger-jack and didn't do a thing for his buzz.

Why is it so easy for a rapper to make a crack mixtape, but so hard for them to stay in the same state of mind while making a mainstream album? Who says you can’t mix the two?

"I'm out for my respect. I want to try to wake the people up this time. My last two records [Ghetto Fabolous and Street Dreams] shaped this mold of me as the rapper for the ladies. I don't want to be looked at for just that. I want to be respected lyrically."-- Fab speaking on his third album Real Talk

This is a years-old quote taken from a website that has since been shut down lol.

Fab, I like you, but it’s 2008. And you're still a Jr. Ladies Love Cool J.

FAB SHOULD DO MORE HARDCORE SHIT. RAP FANS ALWAYS PUT RAPPERS IN A BOX, LIKE WE HAVE TO BE ONE WAY & CANT DO DIFFERENT SONGS OR STYLES. I GOT A SONG CATERING 2 LADIES BUT NEXT IM GOIN 2 DISRESPAECT HOES. DONT PUT ME IN A BOX! http://www.myspace.com/jdubbthayounghectic

I like fab but he can't make full albums because he's not a real lyicist when it come to topic other deep topics. For example he tried to get deep on that joint with lil mo on his last album but it sounded like something a elementary kid wrote. After this album I just had to accept he is what he is, just 1 knotch above average but not great. He's like the rap marubaury talented from the draft but never got better.

i once thought Faboulous would be the next to grab that NY crown, what happned? He fell of his grind.he keeps falling short on the album front. He needs to get back to that F.A.B.O sh&t.

But lyrically he can destroy Lil Wayne anyday

FABS MIXTAPES HAVE ALWAYS SHOWN THAT HE IS NOT JUST A RAPPER FOR THE LADIES.. I BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN BE BOTH A GANGSTER AND A GENTLEMEN. EVERY MAN HAS A SOFT SPOT FOR HIS LADY.. THE HARDEST DUDES ON THE STREET WAS SINGING MAKE ME BETTER..LOL. THAT DONT TAKE AWAY FROM HIS LYRICAL SKILLZ!! YA BOY LOSO IS THE TRUTH!! HE SPITS FIRE...MIXTAPE OR ALBUM. PERIOD!

SHOCKING NEWS!!!!!!!..... U MAY WANNA SIT DOWN FOR THIS ONE, Y'ALL!!!

THIS IS ACTUALLY A GOOD BLOG TOPIC! (I know, right?) Maybe not the most pertinent, but definitely not irrelevant, and definitely NYC. Good job, slim. NOW, WIPE THAT STUPID GRIN OFF YOUR FACE! Let me see you do it 2 in a row.

Some advice for you on how to start and keep a winning streak:
* How about multiple topics on one blog (gives us more to comment on)
* Try posting on dudes you personally dont like but are still making noise...
* Shine some light on the underground NYC hip hop scene - the up-and-coming artists, producers & DJs, local battles and other events...

ON LOSO, I concur that Fab is one of the biggest under-achievers in the rap game. And on why dudes can come correct on mixtapes but not on official label releases, friends in the industry tell me that some (not all) is to be blamed on the label heads & execs. They may force an artist to follow the proven formula, even if the said formula is not true to "real" Hip Hop. They sometimes force an artist to make records for the sole purpose of helping out a labelmate - in Fab's case, that covers the joint with Neyo and Jeezy.

Question for the "know-it-alls": Who really is to be credited for having created the mixtape format? (I know 50 always be takin credit, like Al Gore tried to say he "invented the Internet"). This means, who did it first as well as who made it so effective. >>> GHOST.

OH YEAH, Reckless. How about hooking up my manz REALITY CHECK wit a job over there as a blogger. A mind (not to mention a library card and too much time on one's hands) is a terrible thing to waste. "Reading is fundamental"; "An idle mind is the Devil's workshop", etc, etc.

to me, fab got the best flow in the game, along with jadakiss. and when i hear fabo on one of hip hops classic beats (bitch please, renegade, triumph, shook ones) it's like perfection.

but his albums r TRASH, that 1st joint ghetto fabolous was horrible, street dreams wasn't much better. and the last album was...meh!

he needs better beats, more concepts to go with that flow, then we may have sumthin

In my opinion Fabolous is way overrated. He has a very lazy flow, kinda like Lloyd Banks. I'm not saying hes weak, but def not in my top 5 hell top 10 rather.

I just feel like Fabs flow is generic there is nothing to e that says huge star, I really feel like his swagger as an emcee is just average and accepted today because (Well I'll go ahead and say though it hurts me to my heart cause I live in Flatbush) but NY been soft, we haven't continued to diversify with our image and everyones coming off the same. Creativity is lacking which in my opinion isn't forcing the masses to buy anymore than their one favorite emcee. Right now I think the most Lyrical dudes in the game are the Clipse, that Re-Up Gang shit is the truth I mean these dudes rhyme like NY used to. I'm ashamed that no one from my city (New in the game anyways) is even really carrying the torch anymore. I don;t run out to get mixtapes anymore and it ain't because I'm bout to turn 28 and I'm out of touch because the young bucks raised on real shit by they parents are saying the same thing.

Fab is one of my favorite rappers....I don't kno bout top 5 n tha game but top five in ny yes...I think tha reason he does all dat coochie caterin is because tha label wants him 2 but we all no fab can get on some gangsta shit n kill it....I don't kno bout him bein better than weezy but he's damn near close 4sho

REAL TALK IN THE MOTHERFUCKING HOUSE NIGGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER...
-
I got here late the other day so I'm going to talk about phony ass, I pretend to be a trillionaire but I'm loving off show money, Nasir. Remember the other day some of you defended his jibberish about how in 25 years blacks won't be able to vote because they simply renewed the 1965 voting act/rights law or whatever? YOU'RE ALL DUMB AND SO IS HE.
-
Blacks were given the right to vote in the late 1800's, WAY BEFORE EVEN WHITE WOMEN COULD VOTE. The 1965 thing was just to allow the feds to make sure kkk groups and shit would stop preventing blacks from getting to the polling station and to protect women as well. See, the civil rights movement was about ALL "minority" groups that weren't white men. Stop being stupid all your lives. You have the right to vote FOREVER but it doesn't mean shit anyway.
-
FUCK YO FAVORITE RAPPER NIGGEEEEEEEEEEER

i have to agree reckless, i remember the quote.
with the exception to the still street dreaming professional mixtape he had the rest of his albums are safe albums.
i think the rec execs have a lot to do with it though.
-
plus fab is a lazy dude, and u can tell cause when he do go hard he rips its but then its like he falls back and stay in this safe zone, hes a A student that thinks its cool to have D's.

get a life

Has anyone ever wondered why The Roots, especially Black Thought of The Roots dosn't get as much love as say, Kanye West. This is getting to me.

Loso need to do jams with cat's you don't expect him to do tracks with. Like say for instance M.O.P. or Mos Def. And he need to get some real beats intead of them cookie cutter joints.

Because Kanye West is marketable. No doubt, Black Thought is a way better rapper but Kanye is more interesting to people (but not me). Besides when you think of the Roots, most people think of the fat mother fucker with the big ass afro and fucked up skin.

This rap shit was never really about skills. Only a few with skills actually made it, but just think of all the other rappers with skills that are still broke. Look at Kool G Rap, he's a perfect example. I could make a long list of other mother fuckers in the smae boat

@ Real Talk
How is your name real tall but you don't even have a link to back up your ridiculous claim.

We don't have to act like white people didn't do us wrong just because shit is looking a lil better now.

Your probaly a fucking Republican.

Ey, hate to break it to ya but M.O.P. is hot garbage. I never understood why people keep talkin bout M.O.P. like they really got a chance to blow up. They just like a newer Onyx.
-
On the topic....I gotta say that I think Fab is one of the coldest lyricist but his lazy style doesn't do it justice.
-
And Reckless...that was a dumb question ma. You said "why do they bring it on mixtapes, but can't on their release." On the mixtape, the artist do what they want, on the CD..they do what "they" want.

You remember the "Get Along Gang?"

I think Fab's lyrics and flow are crazy. The problem is that he is short on content. His joints alway fall short because of the lack of content. If he could expand his content somewhat then he would be one of the illest in the game. In fact he is already ill he just needs to expand his game.

@dre
what up lord
i see another white boy flipped out.

i was telling my cousin it would be funny if white kids just be like fuck it i wanna go to predominatly black schools, lol.

I agree with a lot y'all. Fab is a monster. I can only listen to him in a mixtape. As a matter of fact, I'm listening to his latest mixtape right now. However, his albums are generic, formula albums. But, he is lyrically built. And someone said that the game was never built on skills. I agree with that statement for every artists in the 50 Cent era. But, in the 90's, u had to be nice to even have a chance in the game. West Coast, East Coast, and Down South rappers were all nice in the 90's. The game just got too corporate because niggaz like Puff and Jay sold our music out for their own personal benefit. I like Jay as an artist. But, he's not a loyal dude at all. And if ur not loyal, ur not good for hip-hop.

A good topic? I'm probably still sleepin, its hard to believe.
.
.
Anyway, full agreement, LOSO can come off the bench and drop 30, but he's inconsistent and his content is lacking. He's a monster on the mixtapes, and I do believe that LA Reid fucked up homeboy's album because of what he thought was the right moves. Chalk another one up to that dumb fuck. That's Joe Budden, Loso, Meth and Red, Ghost and countless other artists that LA Reid is fucking over like they ran a train on his daughter or something

i dont see why Fab would even bother, I'd keep the shorty tracks, niggas aint gonna support if ur next LP is a fuckin classic. Bitches buy albums niggas cop mixtapes, it seems like he's doin it right. Not to mention the one thing niggas respect more than talent is $$$$$$$$$$$

I don't respect annother niggas money, why do you think I dick ride Gay-Z so much. A nigga like me respects a rapper's D I C K size. That's why I fucks with Ray J and his huge meat.

I lost all hope in LOSO bein a rapper I'd pay attention to after i bought the one that "breath" came off. That album was strictly for the boppers. His style is outdated now, no one's into that pure NY sound anymore, let's face it. He should pull a fat Joe and move to Miami, or keep makin songs for the chicks. That's the only image he has, cause no one's gonna beleive this beanpole nigga who get's got for his jewlery is gonna bang on anybody. Stick to the chick songs Fab, then maybe u can get a tv show on NBC where ur an aspiring NFL player who's a part time nanny for a single mother with two kids, and later goes on to open a fitness center.

fab.... No competition? you my dude, once you step ya game up, and stop talkin about females and Jewlery like with every bar you write. maybe you could be at least nice.... But your subject matter game is slim to none homey... NEW YORK... is this clown all u got?

Fab's delivery to in my opinion is just corny and nowhere near stands out to me as representative of Brooklyn. And I hate to co-sign Jim Jones but I do agree that being that the five bouroughs have different styles it's hard to get everyone on a united front to make real music. And whoever said the comment about NY beefing your right I can't hold you on that one. I'm waiting to be amazed by someone from out of left field that isn't coming out saying their already rich and moving Ye on their first single.
@ Dre

Peace

fab.... No competition? yo my dude, once you step ya game up, and stop talkin about females and Jewlery like with every bar you write. maybe you could be at least nice.... But your subject matter game is slim to none homey... NEW YORK... is this clown all u got? and yo, to that dude Mayor:

I'm be surprised that nobody attempted 2 blame these college shootings on something in "pop culture" namely a movie dealing with similar situations.

Higher Learning anyone?

Im surprised the shooting isnt Jay-Z's fault . . . maybe its still too soon

Com made some pretty good points. What happened to people commenting on the subject on hand. All of this E-Thuggin is for the birds. How many of you would really voice your opinions in real life. i.e. Hate and more Hate, PZ, Real Talk, etc. Keep it real in yo real life and in your E life.

Fabolous is expendeable and an extremely worthless rapper.

As for New York and the South, damn near every rapper is interchangeble. Just one big homogenous group of uber-thug drug dealing pimps.

fuck it. These record companies gave stupid ass niggas some advance money to completely destroy the game. and guess what, fabolous and every other blah rapper, its time to do do the Bar -Mitzvah circuit, because the record companies will find a new nigga next year.
