FIGHT THE POWER! Kool Herc is Doing for His Hood What Jay-Z Didn't

As many of you may know, Kool Herc, the DJ that cut hip-hop’s umbilical cord at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue during a party for his sister back in 1973, has asked hip-hop’s leading men and womenâ€"including Will Smith and Queen Latifahâ€"to pitch in and help raise the $3 million dollars needed to meet the $14 million demand to keep the legendary Bronx tenement out of the hands of a greedy developer.

New York City is currently undergoing a vicious attack against overzealous developers looking to turn our city into a strictly bourgeoisie to upper-class environment. And even though The Bronx has been slow to feel any brutal gentrificationâ€"unlike Brooklyn and Manhattan’s L.E.S and Uptown, the birth place of hip-hop is still feeling the heat, thanks to developer Mark Karasick, who bought the then affordable housing tenement from BSR Management back in February.

1520_SedgwickAve.jpgPic via AMNY

Karasick planned to turn 1520 Sedgwick into an upscale, high-rent high rise.

Well at least the voracious bastard made an offer.

So now, the ball’s in Kool Herc’s court. The only problem is, there aren’t enough players on his team.

Many Brooklynites have seen what went down in Bed-Stuy. Bedford-Stuyvesant used to be called “Do or Die.” Now it’s called “Do or Die in the street after being kicked out of your apartment.” Where was Jay-Z when they took over the ‘hood? Nowhere to be found. Neither was any other notable rapper from Brooklyn as the wild fire spread from Fort Green to Bed-Stuy to Bushwick, Flatbush, and Crown Heights. Soon, you’ll have white people subletting in East New York’s notorious Pink Houses.

Not to be so … pessimistic, but most rappers have neglected New York City. So what makes Kool Herc think that any rapper is going to care? Especially those who made the Forbes list. They should be the last ones to give a damn. I could be wrong though.

And contrary to the blog title, where was Kool Herc when the city tore down the park by Yankee Stadium to build that stupid mall? Or whatever the hell that garbage is supposed to be.

Anyways, those interested in lending a hand to Kool Herc can do so online at Save1520.org

One thing I can say: The Bronx is putting up a fight. Can we say that about the other boroughs? Not really. And if Herc wins this battle, that will definitely be a good look.

what was Jay suppose to do
buy every piece of property in brooklyn to keep the rich from buying up the stuff then u probably say he monopolozing brooklyn for himself, just blame jay for your life b**tch

WHAT DO JAY Z HAVE TO DO WITH THIS YALL BLAM HIM FOR EVERYTHING AND THEM PEOPLE COULD DO WHAT EVER THEY WANT TO DO WITH THAT BUILDING THATS THEY PROPERTY

My Pops was a crack fiend and left when i was a baby. Dat nicca used to beat my moms too. Fuck jay-Z itz all his fault.

Wow, I am at work reading this stupid ass blog its HOVS fault, damn give me a job HOV, then I can do the pr work to explain why its not your fault sohh hires f-kng idiots. Akon should have just blamed on HOV, everyone else does

Jay-Z can't be held responible for what has happened here. The problem is the poverty in the community.Rappers can't save the hood. If they could, they would be politicians. Kool Herc is Dope (my bad, THE DOPEST) and he has a goal that can be and should be reached but every rapper can't be a community leader, and they shouldn't have to be.

What is Kool Herc doing besides begging for money and attention? Lets be real here. The "hip hop" of the 70's doesn't remotely resemble the hip hop of today. To be honest it doesn't resemble the hip hop of the 80's. These Bx "has beens" kill me with their whining. Most of these dudes are like 50yrs old and grandfathers. Get over it already. They lacked vision so they missed the boat. They never set out to be rappers to begin with they were wannabe funk artists and singers who lacked the talent it took to break through in that artform. They're irrelevant in every aspect and I wouldn't call them out if they'd just shut the fuck up and find a way to get money from what they "created" instead of always talking shit and griping. Were it left up to those Bx "legends" rap would've never left the parks and projects and no one would care about it. Not even these bloggers.

Look at what the true innovators of rap did out in Queens and take notes. Run-DMC didn't dress up in costumes like Zulu and Furious Five instead they were the first to start the trend of wearing clothes worn in the street. They were also the first to go Platinum, first on Rolling Stone, first on MTV, first to get a Grammy, first on Yo MTV, first to tour arenas and the list goes on. LL is literally the G.O.A.T. Salt and Pepa the first females to go platinum.

Before Rza and WuTang there was Marley Marl and the Juice Crew. Before Puff there was Russell Simmons. Before Bad Boy there was Def Jam. DJ Clue didn't create the mixtape format but every mixtape today follows his blueprint. He is the most successful mixtape DJ ever and he's also from Queens.

Who would be wearing Bling if it wasn't for Queens? Did you ever see the micro silver chains Melle Mel wore while dancing like Michael Jackson back before he took steroids? And to this day the biggest selling rapper out of NY is none other than 50 Cent who hails from Queens. where else? While KRS-One was sleeping in cars and homeless shelters in the Bx somewhere Queens was making noise in the streets and dominating the industry. Paving the way for his Dr. Seuss rhyming ass to earn a living.

All the Queens haters (especially the bloggers on this site) should check themselves. The Bx may have invented the "wheel" so to speak but Queens took that wheel and gave the world a "luxury vehicle" to ride. The reason why no one remembers or respects these cats is because they just didn't do enough for long enough.

Manhattan keeps on making it, Brooklyn keeps on taking it, Bronx keeps creating it, BUT Queens ELEVATED it!

Queens Reigns Supreme!

Well its about F U C K E N time you people realize about Gay-Z. Why are Gay-Z D I C K riderz crying about everything not being his fault? Almost everything is his fault.
Beans=Flop
Freeway=Flop
Cock-A-Fella=Flops
Def Jam artist=Flops. When people put effort into things and the boss don't do shit for you.. Its cause they don't wanna see you replace them. But someone that aint Gay-Z is gonna save that piece of Hip Hop history. But don't count on Gay-Z. He's too busy thinking that someonre is gonna take his imaginary spotlight that he thinkz he got.

niggas act like Jay-Z is the only nigga in NY with mad guap.....negro please its other people with money that can be asked the same thing as Jay-Z.....I'm not even on Jay like that but stop blaming that man for everything and take responsiblity for your own shit

All I Can Say Is WooooooooooooooW

Rather than spend money on saving the buildings of low income people I'd rather Kool Herc and everyone else put their efforts into education and job training programs in those neighborhoods so that those people aren't forced to live in crime ridden, low income projects.
*
Nimrod,
I'm shocked at your statement, but will attribute it to youth. And as sure as I am sitting here some young person will be saying the same thing about current rap icons in 20 years as that rap will sound differant from today's.

I think any fan of hip hop music period should send at least 5$ to this man's fund to save that building. Yeah I'm from ATL but I repect my history! Tell cool Herc to leave an email or number where niggas can call or send money. Think about it if Nelly sold 8 million albums if just 3 of those millions put up a dollar then we straight. Them hollywood rappers probably wont chip in so we gotta do it!

Oh my bad I see the web address now

First off I want to give you mad props for even posting a blog entry like this. This topic is extremely important and anybody who gives the slightest damn about the working class or the poor would care about this issue. That comment you made about the Forbes list is right on point and as of now every commenter completely missed what you were getting at. All these rappers "rep" their hood but do not give a damn about the corporate.elite takeover of their hood and the eviction of poor (usually black and latino) people.

Yeah so, much respect man. Keep up the good work.

Now @ Essex: Compared to these other people your comment was very rational. But I think you are wrong to a certain degree. I don't think (I may be wrong because it isn't the clearest) he was trying to say that Jayz is at fault for gentrification. That would be ridiculous. But what is important is that Jayz, the Forbes list rappers, and a handful of others, consistently "rep" their hoods but don't actually give a damn about them. We can argue that hip hop is art and as you said it is not their job to be community leaders. And you have a good point with this. It is not their responsibility. But, as people still in the hood, I don't think any of us should be fooled by them. I don't think we should buy their second rate albums, go to their concerts, or even be proud of them. Why even acknowledge someone who claims to be proud of your neighborhood, has made vast amounts of money off of that same neighborhood, then, when push comes to shove, doesn't give a god damn about anybodies well being in the town?

Lastly @Nimrod: That may have been one of the most ignorant comments I've seen in my life and I'm from Queens. It seems like you didn't even understand the topic. You wrote, "They're irrelevant [old school BX rappers] in every aspect and I wouldn't call them out if they'd just shut the fuck up and find a way to get money from what they 'created'... Were it left up to those Bx 'legends' rap would've never left the parks and projects and no one would care about it."

That may be the most ignorant shit i've ever heard in my life. So if they were on the Forbes list they would get your respect? Otherwise they're crap? Music shouldn't be commodified that brutally. Thats whats wrong with hip-hop now. People with ideas like this have too much leeway now a days. Ideas like this are why D4L, Hurricane Chris, and others are saturating the scene. And why half rated 50 cent and no talent Jim Jones are two of the most popular. Money equates Bad music.

And much respect to ATOWNSTAYZDOWN and Bird.

Wow y blame jay-z?? Evry topic this hiphop blogs some1 gotta bring hov's name in some how.. Is it he's fault ur babydady aint there for he's child? Is it he's fault that college tution is so damm expensive? Lets all blame him cause some of us r poor, wtf leave him alone... he worked for he's money. So should we al do..
WE MEANING び AND I CAN DO A LOT SHIT 2 Help DA PEOPLA IN AFRICA, BUT NONE Of US AINT DOING SHIT.. So stfu び stupid bloger

Whoever wrote this is stupid. I live in NY and this was on the news the other day. The people in the building already raised $11 Million. You are acting like Kool Herc raised the 11 million himself . The people started the fight. Most people do this when the landlord wants to sell the building the tenants take over and it usually becomes a co-op. In Brooklyn the people are not putting up a fight. What they did was clean up those neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Just like they are doing in Harlem. It does raise the value of the property so most people can't afford it but think about the ones who bought years ago that are sitting on a fortune right now.

@Bird

Youth? You may not agree with my opinions and that's your right but the facts I presented are irrefutable. Did I lie about any of the facts I presented? NO! What youth do you know who even knows the history I put down? Apparently your youth prohibits you from knowing that part of the history or maybe you're from the Bx and biased like these bloggers.

@Resist

I mentioned true rap trailblazers like Run DMC, LL, Marley Marl, Russell Simmons and the like. Take your ready made rebuttal about D4L somewhere it applies.

This is a blog and I can express myself about any aspect of the topic I see fit. You're not from Queens so stop fronting and if you are you're suffering from an identity crisis.

I challenge anyone to point out 1 lie in my post. I don't expect the Queens bashers to like it. I put it out there to to deliberately fuck with y'all. The wounded animal makes the most noise. Thank you for identifying yourself... Shall we continue?

nimrod was totally off subject. one, two jay-z can probably give a fuck less about niggas getting kicked out their own crib especially if its some motherfuckers that are probably the up most ignorant and using the hood as an excuse to sell crack and not get a real job. three what i think kool herc is doing is real and needs to be done cause if you think this is not just happening in new york its in every up north hood white folks buy the shitty property that we dont take care of fix it up raise the rent and move people in that can pay the rent. then soon as you know it your hood aint a hood no more and your moving down south real talk!!!!!

Furious Styles (Laurence Fishburne) tried to put ya'll up on game in the classic Boyz in da Hood !! It would seem very meaningful if some Boyz from the Hood would do something about it. It is unfair to blame Jay Z;however, given his latest real estate ventures it really would be a great gesture not only for Brooklyn but for HIP_HOP!!! But I do say, Jay Z aint the only Boy or Girl from the hood!! I ain't from BK, I am form Jacksonville, FL, Duval Co., better known as The Bang'em, I can make a donation, and will, I LOVE THE HOOD, no matter where the HOOD is at, I LOVE HIP HOP it proved we can solve our own problems !!

You still on my dick nigga? What did you braid my pubic hairs into a rope so you could have a better grip on my nutts?

@sightseeing

I don't think I'm off subject at all. What is the subject? Jay-Z should be more like Kool Herc? Well forgive me for showing why that makes no sense. People have been promoting lies for so long it's being accepted as fact. Herc is irrelevant and I showed why. That's very much on topic.

@ the Blog Writer

I'm too busy trying to give them mother fuckers in Africa clean drinking water. It's not my fault these old rap pioneers didn't have any business sense to own what they have created. I swear niggas is stupid

I don't know who be on my dick more Chi-Town MidWest, Beyonce or your bitch ass Reckless

Yo what's good ya? I got new music available at the spot. Come holla at your boy.. New mixtapes available and instrumentals

http://cyberthugs.wordpress.com

My mixtape game is crazy. Holla at your boy they're all available for download..

Save the buliding for what? Because Herc lived there?! And who exactly is he? He's full of himself and people caught up in his myth are just as delusional as he is.

Fuck Jay Z, Will Smith, and Queen Dike Latifah. If your a grown ass man looking for a hand-out your need to kill yourself. If you can't take care of you and your you need to put a bullet in your head. Only hoes rely on someone else to give them hand outs

A real blog topic! yyeeaaa see i knew u had it in u....big ups to kool herc man gentrification is not a joke, i'll be breakin bread on this 1 & i hope everyone else that can, does. It would be nice if some big name rappers or other nyc-bred celebrities got behind this project, they could get that $3 mill. like it was some chump change, but waiting on them makes about as much sense as hoping to find a leprechaun with some gold. Them niggas is rich bougie bitches now they dont give a fuck about the hood or any1 in it plain & simple. But like i said imma do my part monetarily & do my best 2 spread the word.

Its real funny how O'Heads want to step out in the limelight acting like they Superman and believing they can save the world. Seriously where were these dudes at in the 90's now all of sudden they want bring there punk ass back into to the media. I feel whatcha saying Nimrod.

How is saving a projects going to save Hip Hop? Who cares about a projects? They need to tear down every project in NY.. They all breed crime and negitivity.. Kinda like hip hop!

http://cyberthugs.wordpress.com

@ nimrod

Save the building for what? Because our people live there. Niggas aint askin 4 no fuckin handout, like some1 up top said the tenants already raised 11 mill. on their own they just lookin 4 a lil bit of help. If u can't relate to needing a hand then you're most likely a lil child up in here & u get all the help u need from momma nigga. & u can diss BX innovators all u want on here but it seems like u got some issues with the percieved irrelevance of queens in hiphop. Nigga it aint the BX's fault no1 cares about Queens man so stop hatin boy

*
You asked that someone point out anything that wasn't true about your statement and I chose the above our of many.
*
Rap (later for hip hop) was not even a known genre of music in Herc's day. People like him and Grand Master Flash had the VISION to bring it to a wider audience. While they may have favored the funk beats of the day, the fact remains they were RAPPING, not singing. Do the funk beats of The Chronic and Doggystyle make Dr. Dre and Snoop wannabe funk stars? They had talent which is why rap is here today.
*
Please believe that almost all black artists from the 50s to the late 70s got raped with a big dick by the industry which is why they don't have any money today. Unlike today's rappers who get the money and just fuck it up, the early cats didn't even get it. They paved the way for artists today to get a fair cut of the music proceeds.
*
The industry shitted on the pioneers and now you got youthful fans of artists and not the genre of rap music shitting on them as well. I tell ya.

No one can save the hood. The feds have seen to that. I live in Chicago and the big white developers are buying anything within 50 miles of downtown which encompasses the West, South and near west Suburbs. These areas are predominately Black and we can't do anything about it. There are some cases where change is for the better. The fact is, this is an old problem thanks to the confluence of drug abuse, miseducation of the Black Man and marginalization of the Black woman. It won't be stopped by some rapper or mogul buying one property at a time. It should have been stopped a long time ago.

As far as who created hip hop and Nimrod's off topic post. Who cares. All of your great hip hop history intellect means nothing. Learn to pay respect to the ones that got us here. What you said is kind of like comparing the civil rights movement of the 1960's to the current watered down version that we have today. They were ridiculed and mocked just like Bambaataa, Flash and Herc were back in the day. Now, along comes a crossover group like Run DMC and it's all of a sudden acceptable to be an MC. Don't confuse a struggle with progress. Let that last thought marinate young'n.

Real conversation... aside from herc being irrelevant he has no claim whatsoever to post 70's rap or recorded rap. Did he ever record any music? No. He fell to the wayside not long after carrying his turntables off the elevator of that building he's trying to save. This guy and people like Grandmaster Caz are embarrassments to themselves. Always talking about what they did. If what they did was so great they wouldn't have to remind anyone. Tell that nigga get a job.

@ Nimrod

--
Yeah Queens did grind it out and we definitely made many of great contributions to what the game has become.

But this issue here is bigger than that. Its about the survival of the everyday hardworking middleclass man. I'm loving what Herc and the people of 1520 Sedgwick are doing. Re-investing in ourselves and buying into our hoods is the only way to stop the gentrification from totally wiping us out of our homes.

I get what the blogger is saying, and he's not blaming Jay-Z. He's just saying that there were people from the hood who were in positions to help and chose not to. Jay was and is under no obligation to reach back and help or to offer assistance to those who may need it....but it would've been nice if he or someone like him did. Thats what the Jews do, which is exactly why they own most of New York including almost all of Brooklyn.

@Ernie Frazier

I did pay homage to the ones that got us here. Maybe it went over your head.

Yo word is born I swear Eskay just did that same post about 2 days ago.. Shout out to my dude Eskay!

Everytime something happens people got they hands to Jay Z or Oprah. You bums get a job and get off public assistance.

If you got 2 arms, 2 legs, and speak English GET A JOB. Illegals don't even have that but they working. And they ain't got their hands in George Lopez or J'Lo's pockets

Nimrod through me off so much with the disrespect I couldn't even address the building situation.
*
First of all, middle class people don't live in the projects. Poor people do. Gentrification is effecting everyone, not just poor people. In my town in Jerz imminent domain is getting middle class white folks pretty much forcibly removed from their properties to make room for the rich. Jay is a rich dude who wants to not only stay rich, but get richer. He is the enemy where this topic is concerned. Herc can forget about him saving that building unless its going to make him some money.
*
That is not a diss to Jay who I love and admire. That is just real. Get with the times or get left behind.

@Sutphin Boulevard

Peace to the God! I respect your response and in truth I agree with it. I just felt like being an antagonist today. Every time I come on this site I see so much hate to Queens artists. Our accomplishments receive no consideration or acknowledgement. I took this opportunity to bomb these haters with FACTS that they are either not aware of seek to conceal.

I'm all for helping the poor but the premise under which Herc is operating is flawed and seems to be self serving. I can't co-sign that.

The topic is a very serious one made silly by the bloggers attempt to tie hip hop into it. It's bigger than hip hop. Rap fans have really bought into the notion that hip hip is omnipotent because of the constant barrage of foolishness fed to them by sites of SOHH.

In any event stay up and be blessed while I have fun provoking these Queens haters. LOL!

The problem is no one pays attention to the Bx and that's why haters like you have to bash Queens everyday on this site. I came today just to fuck with y'all.

Small minded people like yourself identify with LOSERS so you promote artists and trends that have no chance. queens artists on the other hand are known and revered around the world unlike Herc. LOL!

If those residents could raise 11 million then we don't have to worry about them being displaced. People think they're gonna live in their rent controlled apartments forever and it ain't happening. Complacency is a motherfucker. Life is a constant struggle but so many of us are content with coasting and leaving no room for error. I don't know the particulars of the situation but it doesn't matter. If you can't afford to live somewhere you have to move where you can afford. That's the price we pay for not having ownership. Is it fair? I dunno. But grow up people. What in life really is fair?

I didnt say Gay-z is from da bronx,I said the hood that made him,but since the bronx is where hip-hop started then it did make all these niggas.

it's all about preserving the essence of the artform & where it originated.

Damn, what's so bad about the brother trying 2 save what he feels should be a landmark in Hip Hop?
but I DO agree that rappers from the hood need 2 stop all the lip professing & represent their hoods.

anything for a comment huh?

Nimrod, much respect to you. I didn't miss anything you typed. My point is that you can't shit on their struggle because it paved the way for your boroughs progress. In the same post you showed love then you proceeded to dump all over them. 1 man can't serve two masters. Either you respect them or you don't. It doesn't matter to me either way. I have a great respect for Queens artists. Nas, Rakim, Marley, Run DMC, LL (who I also consider the G.O.A.T.) have been part of life's soundtrack. I also respect the other boroughs also. I'm from Chicago, that's where loyalty lies. But, I respect the fact that without Flash and Marley, there would be no Kanye. Without Herc, Nas and Rakim, there would be no Rhymefest, Common or Lupe. Without Kane who rolled with Marley there would be no Twista. It all adds into the same equation. Rap has progressed to a great level but it had to start somewhere.

I think gentrification is a great thing! The more the developers buy up, the more expensive it will be for you jungle bunnies to live there. The less there is of you, the less there will be of kids getting shot going into corner stores, people getting robbed after coming home from working 3 jobs etc... I can already feel my property value increasing!

So just because this is the first building where the first party may or may not have been thrown (its just been decided that this is the place) where some duke "Invented" the artform, but its just another pissy hallwayed building yo.
They havent tried to do anything special for it, make it a museum, or a landmark, or anything. The TRUE artform of hiphop TO ME was born from the block parties where they'd steal the electric from the street lamps and breakdance and have MC battles, or in the parks, thats where the TRUE art of hiphop TO ME was invented. The only thing they've done to recognize this is to bitch about it and name a clothing line after it.
Why dosent Mr. Herc ask Sedgwick & Ceder to put up the dough since they wanna rep it so hard.
Whatever, this dude is just salty because his whole legacy is some main room in some pissy hallwayed building and when they buy it out noone will even give a shit about him.

This is a very stupid post and you have the nerve to put Jay name in it like he the one selling all of these peole apt. buildings and houses. It's the owner of these buildings that are sellin them. WTF is Jay suppose to do. Tell these people that are losing there apts to save there money, look I know most of these peopel in projects and buildings that pay nothing or lil too nothing for so long that they should have a nice stash to go and get a nice apt. somewhere else, or how ablut this get a dayum job and yuo too can afford to live somewhere when your projects get shut down. If ayall would have took care of yall projects and apt. buildings maybe then the owners wouldn't mind keepig yall nasty a$$e$ in there to live.

Good Bye Jungle Bunnies says...

January 17, 2008 10:23 AM

I'm going to co-sign this because I like when ghetto ass niggas get kicked out of the hood and get to live in the white neighborhoods.

LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

@ Nimrod

I feel some of what you're saying, but this isn't the time or topic to start demanding respect for Queens' contributions to hiphop. Queens is definitely on the map and aint goin nowhere! Herc's real motives & intentions can be argued over all day. But the general idea of what those people are doing is absolutely great! Its pro-active and productive. They're not marching, protesting, or asking 4 handouts, they're doing for self and its a good look that needs to be encouraged.

@Bird....

Most of what you said is sad but true. But keep in mind that theese people have already raised $11 Million of the $14 Million needed, and that there are many tax benefits for potential donaters...its called charitable contributions. Also these are not projects. They are low income housing for everyday working people who can't quite afford $1,500 a month for a one-bedroom. So for them to have even raised $11 Million is an amazing feat. But more importantly its just absolutely imperative for us to start OWNING property.

@nimrod
what im saying is if you live in this project building or you grew up their these are your people right especially if you made it famous and people show u respect when you come thru would you rather buy the building so the people that u kno still live their or to see a whole bunch of uptight yuppy people living their especially if this is one of the places were hip-hop was birthed

@Chi-Town MidWest

Very predictable, we all knew you were gonna post something on here cause it mentioned Jay-Z, your fatal attraction mad that you can't have him obssessed love affair....you still talkin about Jay-Z????.....you must have given him a valentine's day card and he didn't give you one back....I don't know if you are a guy or a girl, but i will just assume u are a guy, talkin about another guy everyday....well, i guess hell hath no fury like a dude scorned for Jay-Z!..........now, onto the topic, Why is Jay's name the only one mentioned, is he the only one from NY who has money?....he helped out during 9/11, helped out during columbine, and helped out with the water crisis in africa....he can't do everything!

Gentrefication is a mutha. Since our economy is going down the toilet, people are loosing jobs. They can't pay their rent or morgage and people get evicted and homes get foreclosed. That's when The Man moves in and buys property for cheap.

i don't know what Jay does for his hood, but i hope he's giving back. He's helping Africans get water, and since he's hiphop's MVP right now, i hope he'll do something to help Kool Herc's cause.

Mad props to todays blog,this is excellent.if rappers wanna help the black community,the best way to do that is to own all the property in it,the housing and all the stores.you care more about the hood when u really own shit.dudes wanna rep they hood but as soon as they get some change they leave instead of stayin and being an asset to the community,how can we tell these crackers and police to respect us in our neiborhoods and to stop trying to push us out when we dont own shit.jim jones,dame dash,cam,santana,be a real G and buy up property in harlem,stop these crackers from pushin us out...

@Ernest Frazier

Peace to you too. It really didn't matter what the topic was today I was determined to paint the place red and call it hell. LOL!

Herc, Theodore, Bambaata, Flash, all those guys did what they did. There's no denying it BUT the lesson I want people to understand is RESPECT begets respect.

I personally feel no locale had a greater impact on the world through pop culture (which is what hip hop became 20yrs ago) than Queens. Compton is a distant second. I merely wanted to make it clear that it was Queens that presented hip hop to the world not the Bx even though it started in the Bx. People on this site hating on Queens wouldn't even know about Rap if it wasn't for the Run-DMC's and LL's. Everyone played their role and disrespect breeds disrespect. And trust me it's far easier to dismiss the pioneers from the bx than it is to dismiss the trailblazers from Queens. The Queens bashers should always keep that in mind.

Nimrod....Isn't Biggie the number 1 selling artist from NY? Are you talking single album or career total? And Jay-Z might have the career total. Even Nas with all of his albums may have more.

ONLY FUCKIN THING IMMA GIVE COOL HERC IS SOME FUCKIN DEPENDS CAUSE HE NEEDS TO SIT HIS OLD ASS DOWN, THE PEOPLE WHO EVEN GIVE A FUCK WILL BE DEAD IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS ANYWAY, FUCKIN OLD HEADS.
NOONE GIVES A SHIT.

LETS TAKE A VOTE EVERYONE, PUT UP OR SHUT UP, DO YOU REALLY GIVE A FLYING FUCK, TRULY ABOUT THIS PIECE OF SHIT BUILDING, DOES IT MEAN ANYTHING TO YOU PERIOD?

I SAY NO FUCKERS!

THE TUPAC CENTER FOR LEARNING, NOW THERES A HIPHOP MONUMENT. NOT SOME DUSTY ASS PIECE OF SHIT BUILDING WHERE SOME OLD HEAD PLAYED SOME MUSIC AND AN MC NAMED MC CRACK ROCK SPIT SOME LAME ASS LINES.

IN CLOSING, NOONE CARES, GO AWAY, STOP LOOKING FOR SHINE CAUSE YOU'RE LIKE GRANDMASTER FLASH'S BROKE ASS IN THE WHITE RAPPER SHOW. ROFL.

LETS VOTE! WHO REALLY CARES?

FOR ME LIKE I SAID, NO!

KONEECHIWA YOU FAKE ACTIN LIKE YOU TRULY GIVE A DAMN MUFUCKAS, YOU KNOW YOU DONT CARE!!

Sohh Reckless, you should not be useing this blog topic to hate on Jay-z. Instead you should use this topic to ask why Mike Bloomberg (mayor of NYC) is not supporting any legilation to preserve affordable houseing in new york. Although, its nice for the hip hop community to support the hood, it's not their responsibilty. The blame should be placed on the elected officials who we put in power, and we pay their saleries with our taxes.

There was no milk left in the carton this morning. Fucking Jay-Z, its all his fault.
.
.
Actually, fuck Reckless, stupid bitch cant put 2 and 2 together, adding oranges and apples up like a some dumb fiend.

Hahaha !! are you serious ?? blame them? we should be thanking them...and people are !!!! because thats their job....to turn shitholes like that building into a real building bring more money to New York.....You should be happy that they have been able to turn those hell holes into places to live. Affordable? get a fucking job

then again nimrod what your saying about bx not blowing it up thats crazy cuz them breakdancing muthafuckers was everywhere before the music really jumped off if you ask me queens pretty much brought the commercial side to it but the dancing had to be a major part plus everybody can tell u that everybody went to the bronx to be in that atmosphere but truly all the best rappers are from queens

Dude Queens didn't make no real noise till they had the batle with KRS-1 and The Boogie Down Production, everybody that came out before that was from either the Bronx or Harlem making real noise and you know the sayin.
Bronx created it Manhattan makin it, Brooklyn keep on takin it and Queens keep on fakin it it. Not that I don't have love for my peeps in Queens but you can't change history.

We really wanr to help out Kool Herc but we spent all of our money on grills, old school slabs and more importantly tricking at the strip clubs

@B stuy Long

That's the type of ignorance I came to address. KRS dropped in 87 after Run-DMC were icons. After much of what I said took place. You are obviously so out of touch with history that I won't even address you any further. Go read a book nigga.

@ B Stuy

Krs had a battle with Mc Shan and a 14yr old girl named Shante. He never battled Queens. He battled a kid.

@ I have a brain, I have a job, Im gonna need 6 to continue to live in NY, where all our local small businesses are becoming Chase banks and Starbucks, and our brownstones are becomeing luxury condominums. I get your point, but its not alright to tell people that your rent is goin to go up by 300% because suddenly, your neighborhood is fashionable(white people wanna live here now). Fukk it, maybe I'll do like everybody else in Harlem and move to the ATL.

@Big Man

Believe it or not Puff sold more records than Big. Big's first album went 2x plat. His second went somewhere around 4x plat but that was because it was a doubled CD that got counted twice for every album. I won't even mention his unimpressive posthumous sales of Ressurection or whatever it was called. You won't believe how many artists sold more than BIG. That's because people like these bloggers promote fantasies as reality daily.

Ok so what abut Kurtis Blow, Bizz Bee, Grand Master flash and the Furious Five and the rest of those crews that was out before Run-DMC? The ones that was that helped birth it not mainstream it.

how many times do I have to tell ya'll that Jay z aint never been concerned about his "Hood" fucc is you niggaz talkin about.. do ya research on Jay.... The nigga work for the New World Order suh... it aint a joke.... this nigga is about the annuit ceoptis novus ordo seclurum... Look on ya dolla bill... Rap has been inflitrated by the bavarian illuminati..

@Nimrod

Just accept the fact that your Boro didn't create HIP HOP!

@ B Stuy

What about Busy B? What about Flash and the Furious Five? They're all answers to trivia questions. Busy B was a favorite at harlem World and Celebrity Club. Local uptown hangouts. I give the Furious Five credit for changing the lanscape with the Message but that will be what they're known for like Sugarhill and Rappers Delight. One hit wonders. Kurtis Blow was managed by none other than Russell Simmons who launched his career. Now what? I know my shit and even though people don't like what I'm saying I can back it up with FACTS not just emotional opinions like 90% people on here.

Comments written above do not repr
WTF you talkin bout they answers to trivia questions, Nucca these are HIP HOP originators, only thing RUN-DMC originated was wearing tight ass leather suits and fedora's and they didn't create that, the was just wearing what every B-BOY and Girl was wearing at the time. I was born and raised on this shit and you can't tell me nothing !!!

@B Stuy Long

Here's some education for you.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=7WyjEe8RTHc

notice Busy B and Melle Mel looking like star struck groupies at Queens cats back in 85. And you had the nerve to say Queens wasn't making no noise until KRS. Where were you? In the womb?

lol @ all you mother fuckers trying to tell Jay Z how to spend HIS money!!!

This is how the rich stay rich - they don't give away shit

Duke stay off the computer finding facts,it was on the radio and every corner back i the day, that's where I get mines from living it. Now yuo wanna talk about being star struck. Why did LL and the rest of them queens cats stay on Brooklyn, Halrlem and DA BX dicks for so many years, wanting to hang with the local dealers and be apart of something cause they knew which boros was poppin and still till this day.

@B Stuy

When you check the youtube link check how Busy b looked like Tyrone Biggums back in 85. Look at Melle Mel wearing a tight as suit and dancing like Michael Jackson. Not a good feeling when everthing you believed is exposed as a lie is it? LOL!

Queens didn't create rap we created the rap industry that everyone wants to be a part of.

Whoever wrote this garbage should just kill themselves and get it over with...your terrible and make absolutely no sense.

Hov has nothing to do with this and yall just attaching his name to the article so people would actually read it...Thats how bad you are, people wont even read you with you writing "Jay Z" somewhere in the title.

You dont rep NY, your a hater, plain and simple.

Actually Rick Rubin was the brains behind that so don't go there!

I just gotta say that u cant blame 1 person for this, but if u r it cant be by any means Jay. Im from Bemore and I hear about the charity work he does; now I may be misinformed but he is only one man and cant save the world or every hood for that matter. Everything that goes wrong that is even related to hip-hop people wanna blame Jay. Like the Def Jam moves that were made. Being President of any company is a high position as we all know, but Jay had a boss too and his name was LA Reid; so whatever happened good or bad cannot be solely put on Jay. I guess if the world ends tomorrow that would somehow be his fault too.

JAY Z'S NAME CANT EVER ARISE. EVEN IN SHIT THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HIM. CHI-TOWN MIDWEST MUST GET A HARD ON WHEN JAYS NAME COMES UP ON THESE BLOGS. JAY MUST HAVE SOLD HIM SOME BAD DOPE BACK IN THE DAY.

@B Stuy

Did you watch the footage? Why would anybody have to go to BK (smalltime bandit headquarters) Bx ( aka Puerto Rico) or Harlem (home of rap pioneers like Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde LMAO!) to hang with G's when the best known G's in the city were right in Queens? Stop believing the lies you tell or repeating the lies that were told to you and while you're at it go take your medicine. You're coming apart at the seams.

Fcuk the footage all I see is old a$$ drug dealers, and fools co-signing them. We suppose to be talking about the music but you want me to watch a video about who sold the most drugs, and you got the nerve to tell me to go read a book. You are officially a clown to me in my eyes.

@ B Stuy

Forget the dealers. Your heroes were on stage looking like the peons they were. That's history nigga.

Gentrification got nothing to do with music. I think you're suffering from PMS youngsta. I'm gonna fall back before you cut your wrist...

All that slick talkin you doin is still not proving your point that Queens created HIP HOP.... When you have proof of that then get back at me!!! YOUR A LOST ONE!!!

@ Nimrod,

is it itrue that the Supreme Team had those rappers from Queens shook?

@B Stuy Short

When did I ever say Queens created hip hop? Are you delirious? I will say that hip hop would be nothing without Queens.

Rick Rubin and Russell were PARTNERS by the way BUT Russell also mangaged the most influential rap group of ALL TIME Run-DMC so the artists on Def Jam benefited from the exposure they got from being on Fresh Fest and other tours headlined by the KIng from QUEENS. Lets go there... as often as you like. You're a glutton for punishment.

Queens elevated the game on every level. Recognize and respect it.

@NIM WIT

ou sayed that Queens presented it to the world , which is false. The first rap I remember was by a white gurl named Blondie who was brought to the airwaves and clubs by Flash Five Freddy (whatever his name is) then Kurtis Blow and RUN_ DMC came after that, so you might need to go check your HIP HOP Almanac one more time to get on my level.

@ Dre

Real talk the Supreme Team like most street legends from the 80's everywhere were irrelevant after that era. If 50 had talked sideways about Preme in the 80's he would've been dead. Gangsta rap ushered in a new era. Where tough talk was all that was needed. The real G's tried to capitalize but they were outshined and outmanuvered by the industry dudes who had the money to stay out of reach. Most street cats who got involved in rap ended up losing like Preme did because they were really living the life while the artists only talk about it. It's ironic that the impostors were far more successful at the gangsta life than the real G's but that's a sign of the times.

To answer your question. As long as the rappers didn't have to be in the hood why would they be afraid? The street cats were old and past their prime meaning their reach wasn't long at all. Look at 50, all he had to do was keep his distance and talk a good one and surprisingly he actually won. LOL!

@ B Stuy

The first recorded rap was King Tim III by the Fatback Band from St. Albans Queens. Do your research. I'm a walking Almanac. I was there punk for the whole journey. I'm bored today and decided to give a free education. If you think education is expensive try ignorance... Ooops you did already now didn't you?

They were not signed so you can't count them locals

Did the idiot blogger realize that this building is special because its the birthplace of hiphop, and that its not "all" about gentrification? You really expect Jay-Z to save every building that's being bought up. What about your local politicians? Mega Church Leaders? Other celebrities from the neighborhoods? Why aren't you calling them out as well? Get a clue dumb ass. This site is turning into MediaTakeout.com with tabloid as post. Hiphopdx.com has real bloggers, these cats over here are clowns. Dismissed...

Whoever wrote this blog must be mad at JAY Z. Did he fuck your girl or something. Firts off Hov has his own problems to worry about. What Jay is doing is big he's out doing shit for the UN, he's trying to bring the nets to brooklyn, if that happens you know how many jobs that will bring. He's doing shit for his community, just because he's not handing your ass money doesn't mean he's not doing shit. Don't blame the man because he found a way out the rat race, he took his drug money and made it work. Not like the rest of you ignorant fucks who like to floss. Get educated, take responsibility and don't blame the next man. PEACE

jay has given million of dollars to brooklyn threw scholarships and gifts for the kids. but of course yall hatin ass people will never think that is enough. he has to give his 300 million that he works hard for so that you assholes are statisfied. why dont herc just give them the 3 million they need? becuase he a broke ass nigga thats why.

MONEY IS POWER-if the develo0per wanna turn this place over RESPECT. THis dumb ass blogger is on crack, jay-z must save it FUCKI YOU and FUCK ANYBODY THAT TRYNA PUT UP A FIGHT, money is power get your money up and talk with paper, not your god damn mouth.

Do New Yorkers beef with each other over boroughs?? Like Queens will go at it wit Brooklyn, or Harlem and the Bronx aint getting along??

Okay kiddies I'm gone. I know I made today's blog interesting but someone's daughter awaits me. If I check in tomorrow and I hear one bad word about Queens it'll be on again! LOL!

Here's Kool G Rap and Polo's "Road To Riches."

on that note, I say 50 was bogus with Ghetto Q'uran, puttin' Preme's biz out there like that.

I actually meant during Run DMC & LL's heyday during mid 2 late 80s

i respect queens because i had fam from QB and southside,and i gotta cousin that used to run with the team that just came home(tucker)so i know how it was out there,but you can even ask LL cool j and he'll tell you that he got his whole style from rich porter(harlem),&kevin childs(harlem,owner of dondiva mag)...

WHAT HAPPEN TO SAVING OURSELVES? ASK FAT JOE TO SAVE IT, WELL WAIT A MINUTE HE RESIDES IN THE SOUTH NOW! WHAT ABOUT THE WUTANG CLAN...WAIT A MINUTE THEY CANT GET THEY MONEY FROM THE RZA! CALL NAS...WAIT A MINUTE HES A SUCKER FOR LOVE REMEMBER. CALL CAMRON....WAIT A MINUTE HE CAN'T BE FOUND. CALL PDIDDY...WAIT A MINUTE HES TOO BUSY MAKING THE BAND...WELL CALL GHOSTBUSTERS...WAIT A MINUTE THEY WOULD NEED BOBBY BROWN. WELL CALL RAY J THEN HE MADE THE DAM SONG!!!!!!

Queens niggas run yall niggas, just ask Russell Simmons.

@Dre Guevara

Can't speak for the all the rappers but the lines were more defined back then. Gangsters were content being gangsters and rappers were content being entertainers. Each one played their role and was respected in their own right unlike today.

on that note, I say 50 was bogus with Ghetto Q'uran, puttin' Preme's biz out there like that.
