For the record, The Big Dough Rehab would have done a lot better had his Myspace fans went to the stores to cop instead of illegally downloading the disc on the internet, but at the same time, Deaf Jam didn’t do sh*t for that album, so at the end of the day, it really doesn't matter. And “the powers that be†who were supposed to push 8 Diagrams didn't do much either.
And here is that song with Swizz Beatz and Drag-On that I was talking about yesterday, called “Hard Knocks†{listen}. I forgot to say that Funk Flex went on the air and announced a reunion of all the original Ruff Ryders, including Styles, DMX, Kiss… all of them. How long will this last? Not sure. But if it’s real talk, then that’s great. But will anybody care?
The Ruff Ryders held it down at the end of the 90s, and haven't been as strong a presence ever since. Only time will tell.

Yeah Ghost is right, but what if we buy the album and its wack? I probably download 1-3 songs a day and if I like what I'm hearing I ALWAYS pick up the album. I dont really follow Ghost as a solo artist like that, but I feel you dude.

Christmas just passed. People had to do for their loved ones. Not only that, but gas is damn near $4 a gallon. If Ghost wants to play the blame game, he needs to holler at Jay Z #1, for leaving Deaf Jam in a shambles; then at Clear Channel, Cumulus, CBS, Cox, and Viacom for not broadcasting REAL HIP HOP. Bottom line, unless an artist has visibility on video, and urban radio, people are not going to respond to his product. HITS make album sales, and Ghost hasn't had a hit since Cherchez la Ghost.
By the way, Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige, Keisha Cole, and Kanye West are all doing numbers; what makes Mr. Coles think his joints are the only ones being downloaded?!?
Maybe, just maybe, a rapper, any rapper damn near 40, no matter how good he is has a problem connecting with fans half his age. Dudes are just too old to be rapping. The record buying public (kids for the most part) don't identify with them. Rap has always been music of the youth. The youth NEED to see youth. People make fun of the south but kids can identify with their silly music so it works at times, Especially when a KID like Soulja Boy is the act.
Other genres are still selling music because their target audience is more mature. Look at Alicia Keys. How come bootleggers didn't hurt her? Because adults still buy CD's to listen to in their cars and homes not Ipods.
These old rappers and fans like B Stuy Long don't get it. You're not a kid anymore. Time to grow up. If you're past 30 and still consumed with MAKING it in hip hop you're pretty much pathetic. If you're past 25 and thinking about STARTING a rap career you need to get a grip.
I know some of the OLD experts on this site will disagree because it conflicts with their fantasy but it's nothing but the truth.
Hip Hop went bad when adults thought they could dress, talk, act like kids and it would be good enough. It worked for awhile but now the jig is up.

I could give you a thousand reasons why he flopped. Somebody above me stated that Ghostface's demographic is people over the age of 30 and that he's promoted his music to the wrong audience.

2. Look at the disparity in age between the audience of the premiere rap showcase program (106th and Park) and the talent. The audience are overwhelmingly high schoolers and the talent are usually adults. Doesn't that strike you as odd? some of those acts look so out of place having thos lil girls screaming for them. I wouldn't be comfortable. Would you?
3. How can grown people rhyming about grown subject matter relate to the teens who buy rap. And by the way most of those teens are WHITE which raises another issue. Race.
4. Young people have the most disposable income because they have the least responsibilities. Young people want to see artists they can identify with and white consumers want the same. Look at who succeeds and ask yourself why? Skills is overrated but some of you never get it so you end up stuck in first gear.
5. Do you think it's a coincidence that Eminem outsold Tupac, Beastie Boys outsold Run-DMC, Vanilla Ice outsold Hammer and Justin Timberlake outsold Usher? The biggest commercial stars in modern black music are white and it has everything to do with a fanbase who identifies with them. It was true 20yrs ago and it's true today.
6. Newsflash people. The record buying public identifies the LEAST with old black rappers no matter how good they rhyme and how young and ignorant they act.
7. While everyone debates the creative aspect which is TOTALLY subjective the crux of hip hop success is ECONOMICS in addition to very predictable human nature.
