They money was split 3 ways nearly 10yrs and they all made millions off the initial investment. How long was he supposed to carry those guys? Was he an indentured servant or something? If those guys are such businessmen they should be able to work wonders with millions if they could do all of that with 200k. What happened to Domino, Boss, Nikki D even when Slick Rick came home he never sold as many records as his first album. 3rd Bass? Yeah they had artist like EPMD, LL Cool J who were consistent but where was everyone else? When Russel left the label was already doomed. Face it we are in a new era. Back in the day every artist was different now they are all the same.

Listen to Reasonable Doubt and it's clear Jay was trying to be like Nas' Illmatic. His first single was 'Dead Presidents' was a Nas type joint but not well received by radio. The B side was ain't no nigga featuring Foxy and that helped him take off. Jay was in Nas' shadow when he first came on the scene as a Roc-a-Fella artist and you're wrong he wasn't a rookie when Pac was around. Jay had been rhyming since the 80's (like Fu-Shickens until he heard Nas). It just took him forever to get some burn. Jay was actually a recorded artist before any of the people I mentioned so he wasn't a rookie.
When Em dropped he outsold everyone hands down so sales wise he was #1.
Like I said, Jay is a helluva lyricist but during the span of his career the field was THICK and NO ONE dominated for very long. That was the beauty of it to me. In my opinion part of the problem now is there's no SUPERSTAR to carry hip hop now that 50's star has faded. This is a first in my memory. Usually there was always someone waiting to snatch the baton.
