Biggie’s wax figure unveiled by the rapper’s mother, Ms. Voletta Wallace
October 25, 2007 [New York, NY] â€" In a moving tribute to her son, Ms. Voletta Wallace today unveiled a wax figure of legendary rapper Biggie Smalls (born: Christopher Wallace) at Madame Tussauds New York. Many of Biggie’s friends attended the figure unveiling, which also featured a performance by members of the Brooklyn High School of Arts’ choir, who sang “I’ll Be Missing You,†a tribute song composed shortly after Biggie’s death, and gospel classic, “I’ll Fly Away.â€
Madame Tussauds visitors will be able to take photos with and even hug Biggie’s figure, which will be housed in its own room on the attraction’s ninth floor. As guests approach the figure, they can use parts of their body to break moving multi-colored light beams to trigger clips of Biggie’s songs to play.
“It is such an honor to have my son's memory memorialized in such a grand way by Madame Tussauds,†said Ms. Wallace. “Their prestigeously recognized attraction showcases the history of many great men and women the world abroad and I'm touched that they have embraced my son Christopher amongst them. My family thanks you for this beautiful statue symbolizing the legacy of a great man!â€
How did I forget? The State of New York put a ban on the word “n*gga†back in March. According to The Brooklyn Paper, New York assemblyman Hakeem Jeffriesâ€"who I'm guessing is a black manâ€" has threatened Universal, saying that if they don’t either stop the release of or change the title of Nas’ album, UMG will be losing $84 million in investments. This sellout told New York’s comptroller Thomas DiNapoli “to withdraw the $84 million that the state pension fund has invested in Universal and its parent company, Vivendi.â€
“It’s a staggering amount of money,†Jefferies said,†which at least justifies a review of the appropiateness of the content that is flooding the public.â€
Jefferies also said:
“[They are] profiting from a racial slur that has been used to dehumanize people of color for centuries. It is time for Nas and other hip-hop artists to clean up their act and stop flooding the airwaves with the N-word.â€
DiNapoli’s spokesperson stated that DiNapoli “is concerned about this issue and is intending to contact [Universal] and urge them to halt the release of the album.â€
