According to sources, the Martin Luther King Jr. Concert Series that Lauryn Hill performed at Monday night in Brooklyn was... strange. Of course she was late, but considering the more blatant abnormalities, that was... normal. She was dressed like a bag lady setting up shop for a Southern-styled Halloween coon show in Washington Square Park-- as you can see. Some of her singing was twisted and incoherent, and many were standing around looking at each other to see if they shared the same confusion: what's wrong with this woman? What happened to the Lauryn Hill we once watched on "Sister Act"?
The humble woman who struck it rich with The Miseducation is so far gone, I'm going to go ahead and blame it on "that stuff." What stuff? Not the stuff that makes you stand in the middle of a crowded sidewalk scratching with your knees an inch above the ground, the other "stuff." There's a lot of other "stuff" out there, so whatever's popular in your hood.
This is not a good look. Now I see why Wyclef said "Lauryn is straight up the problem."

After posting about Lauryn and her peculiar get-up, it's kind of hard to give a two f*cks about this. BUT, DJ Envy and Red Cafe are going all the way in: they're digging in those pockets to do a video for "Dolla Bill." The album, The Co-Op, isn't slated for release until the end of September, so now is the best time to pay BET those big bucks to give it some "106 and Park" and "BET Now" airplay. Otherwise, forget it. I mean, really.
I don't know why I didn't put two and two together, but I should've known that Envy's position at Hot 97 is why "Dolla Bill" is receiving so much airplay. But it's all good. It pays to be cool with Ebro, just ask Remy. Well, at least "The People's Choice" is backing a New York artist.
I think that the people still care about Lauryn Hill and that's why I guess what she is wearing plays so much into how people feel about her, but I am really not concerned with her clothes as much as I am with what she may be going through. I mean what's amazing to me is that everyone has stated that she's crazy, she's lost it but from the lastest interviews I've seen she seems like she's still there; maybe just emotionally she's going through things that simply aren't the publics business. As opposed to growing with her or listening to what she is saying through her music we just right her off as insane. But music is indicative of the soul that creates it. I have not liked her stuff lately but maybe it's what she needs right now so that in the long run she can come back and make more sence to her audience again. Her core fan base has stayed dedicated to her because she is a musical genius, the only problem with Genius is that it is cousin to insanity and sometimes laymen may have a hard time defining the line. Personally I am a fan of her music and intellect, and if she is going through something she's wearing it (Pause not literally) but her soul is on her sleeve and I appriciate the fact that she didn't and hasn't pretended to be someone she's not happy being to sell records. I respect an artist today more than ever for not compromising themselves for anyone. I personally just want to give her a hug and solve her problems for her because think she has contributed that much to Hip Hop, and given to black woman a role model at the time she was most popular. On top of that she's in my top 10 emcees and I think to this day probably can't be fucked with because her level of lyricsim is that far advanced past most emcees of today. I hope she makes a comeback because I miss L Boogie. Support the woman don't hate, remember we all got our struggles. She deserves our respect no matter what she's going through.
