WHEW was that hard to get through. Those stomach cringing, teeth-gritting, fingernails-dragging-across-the-chalkboard British accents were like box cutters through my eardrums. I don't have a problem with them dissing New York, lmao, but goodness those accents. Lord have mercy. That was like sitting in front of six opera singers hitting six different high notes at once. And for the record, "Loooonnnndonnn" sounds HILARIOUS. I mean, this sh*t is so corny that it really is funny. And the last verse was just breathtaking. Absolutely harrowing.
But whatever the situation, I'm pretty sure they know that "if it wasn't for The Bronx, this rap sh*t praly never would be going on." So it's all to the good. Besides, if they weren’t feeling NYC they wouldn’t have jacked the track.
Speaking of that very line spit by that Soundview MC, the gentrification takeover is beginning to accelerate in the streets of The Bronx. Even though the Italian neighborhood not too far from Soundview, known to most as Morris Park, is still standing firm despite the black and Hispanic dominance in the remainder or The X (not including Riverdale and Pelham Bay), other places are falling victim to changes. One of those places are 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, the building where DJ Kool Herc (born Clive Campbell) cut the umbilical cord of hip-hop in August of 1973. It was there that he took the turntables out and spun on the 1s and 2s for his sister's party, the first time ever done in America. BUT, this was influenced from Kool Herc's homeland Jamaica, and soon after this party, the technique--later named DJing--spilled out into the streets of the Bronx borough, thus introducing MCing. Now? It's universal. And the building in which this began is about to have all the soul sucked out of it.

Mr. Campbell thinks the building should be declared a landmark in recognition of its role in American popular culture. Its residents agree, but for more practical reasons. They want to have the building placed on the National Register of Historic Places so that it might be protected from any change that would affect its character â€" in this case, a building for poor and working-class families.
Throughout the city, housing advocates said, buildings like 1520 Sedgwick are becoming harder to find as owners opt out of subsidy programs so they can eventually charge higher rents on the open market.
"This is where it came from," said Clive Campbell, pointing to the building's first-floor community room. "This is it. The culture started here and went around the world. But this is where it came from. Not anyplace else."
They don't know when to stop. This is one of many buildings under attack; I can see it now. All this development and rent raising is going to cause a horrible conflict in about five more years. What are they going to do then?

Comments Like the one's provided by the writer of the piece illustrate why Rap is on the decline.
Most of these Psuedo Hiphoppers seem to lack the understanding that hip hop (not Rap) is a worldwide entity It's bigger than the south bronx, most of these psuedo "Know it alls" haven't any Knowledge of hip hop beyond USA.
Well news flash the rest of the world want a piece of the HIp Hop pie and their not asking for it, their taking it and are introducing some much needed diversity into this over sampled under skilled joke that modern rap has become. Deep. Proper deep. First off, the song being discussed is about 2 years old (it was released soon after Ja, Jada & Joe released it).
I find it funny how people can go on so foolish about music. If you ask me though, our music is not being represented in the US properly. Not all of us have brash British (English) accents. Trust me - check out www.myspace.com/coopzmusic.
On the other hand there's no way I would bump a British artist that sounds like an American though, except for Rick & Monie and thats because of the amount of years they've been over there. They get a bly from me.
Sway & Baby Blu (the first & second verses) are good artists. Now Bruza (the third verse) gets props from me for the humour* cos that ain't no flow. Thats just some kinda weird style that he's mastered and managed to pass off as rapping.
So as a challenge to the US - Find some good UK Hip-Hop artists. FYI: I class Grime as a form of Hip-Hop as well (depending on how good it is!!) Let me know how it goes.

The song came out a few weeks after the original (Ja Rule 'New York') hit England's mainstream media. It's kind of ironic 2 me that Sway (the first rapper on the song) would eventually go on to freestyle with Remy Ma, Rhymefest etc at the BET Awards (that's not to necessarily say that the awards were hosted in New York, i'm not quite sure lol). We don't have BET over here, but the show was shown on one of our satellite channels.
I'm English and I'm a fan of rap music & hip hop, U.S or British, and although i take the song as a joke, I personally don't agree with it & its obvious why New Yorkers may take offense to it. If anything this song isn't a representation of the sentiments all of us in the U.K. share towards the birthplace of hip hop.

It's one thing to have a preference, it's another thing to discriminate based on a label attached to a person. Period..point blank. I prefer black women...does that make me a racist towards white women? No..it is a preference. Ask yourselves why do UK artists have to say F NY before U.S listeners will hear a track? Is because the so called true HIP HOP Radio stations won't play anything without a U.S Stamp. are you then surprised why hip hop is on the decline.
Allow me to explain If you wake up and listen to one style of music; and eat drink and sleep one style of music your ears will never appreciate the diversity of other forms. This diversity is the exact thing that makes hip hop a truly unique artform that it takes elements from everyhere to build it. The lack of this imagination is the exact thing that is killing the music.
Each artist has the same 5-10 hot Producers making tracks for their albums is there any wonder sh!t all sounds the same and nobody wants buy this anymore. Artists are too busy starting nonsense beef in an attempt to raise sales and shake awake up a half dead industry.
artists are more concerned with how much ice they have in their chains than the content of their flow. the end result is weak content and therefore sales drop. who is primarily affected by this all the people who break bread off of the artform not just MC's the A&R's the Hype Men the Promoters all the way down customers.
In england the kids are buying british because the fire that used to come from over pond isn't pouring through like it used and UK artist have that raw delivery that is essential to Hip Hop. as I said before you used to be able to tell the difference between standard of U.S and UK production that nolonger applies as the standard is more on par with the US. UK stations are more happier with repping english UK Artists because they are fire they are Hungry and will fight for each record they sell, end of.
