KRS-ONE: " I would prefer that you see "HIP HOP LIVES" as more of a 'follow up' or a continuation, a part two of what Nas has declared."

KRS_Blastmaster.gif

The Blastmaster KRS-ONE released a statement for all who are interested in his May 22nd album release with Marley Marl, called HIP HOP LIVES (without the dash between "hip" and "hop," as he claims this is the correct way to spell it).

Via Reelrap (formerly known as Bronxrap):

"This album is about unity and reconciliation. This is why Marley Marl and I reject any notion that our work "HIP HOP LIVES" is somehow an "answer" or a "disagreement" with Nas' work (Hip Hop Is Dead). Of course we knew that our album title would cause some speculation however, if our work must be compared to Nas' work Marley Marl and I would prefer that you see "HIP HOP LIVES" as more of a "follow up" or a continuation, a part two of what Nas has declared. Isn't it obvious what we are ALL trying to do? Nas, Rakim, DJ Premiere, Kanye West, Buck Shot, Talib Kweli, MC Lyte, Russell Simmons, Afrika Bambaataa, will. i. am., Dr. Cornell West, De La Soul, the TATs Cru, Lil' Wayne, Jay-Z, Ludacris, JS One, Rock Steady Crew, Immortal Technique and many others are ALL trying to refocus Hip Hop and preserve its original intent of artistic excellence, peace, love, unity and safely having fun. Isn't this obvious?"
Yes it is obvious, but for all the garbage that gets the shine, it's kind of hard for it to not become oblivious. And I don't give a fuck if KRS is known as Mr. "I am Hip Hop," which I wouldn't challenge. Regardless of his status in the hip-hop world, I don't cosign Lil Vicodin, will.i.am, Ludacris, or Hov as part of the "keep hip-hop one-hunned" movement. Lil Vicodin is an overrated joke, will.i.am was rolling with The Black Eyed Peas, Luda became even more commecialized with his fake "Runaway Love," and Hov is just making a bunch of noise over a sloppy beat because he knows he can do it and make it look acceptable.

BOo.

Nevertheless, good luck. I hope people buy the album.

Ha! Two firsts in one week! Shiiiiiiiiiit this is what I call livin.

FIRST MUTHAFUCKAS

2nd. UK doin it big u heard. Fuck the ATL blogger Gayant or whatever his name is.

cant believe im gonna say this, but reckless. COSIGN! and cosign, with what most of what KRS one says, except for the RAPPERS he mentioned, such as hova, wayne and WILL I AM??? wtf

Never thought I'd say this, but fuck KRS-one. With what he said there, fuck him. The man's a poetic giant, but those artists he mentioned that are supposedly keeping 'hip-hop alive'? mayne, come on. Some of the dudes he mentioned, strait up, be some of THE lamest voices in rap music. most notably, lil 'weezy, or whatever the fuck that little bitch calls himself nowadays, kanye west, who bytheway is a disgrace to the CHI, jay-z (does this really need to be justified?), and most of all, LUDACRIS???!!?? WTF???!!?? Also, that noise-makin punk from blackeyedpeas.

When it comes to gangsta/street rap, the only ones comin real wit it and still bringin the raw heart/emotion are:

SCARFACE
K-RINO
SHABAZZ THE DISCIPLE
TRAE THA TRUTH
and most of all Z-RO, THA CROOKED. Dat boy right there is bearing the street hip-hop flag on his own, he the G.O.A.T., the MVP of dis street rap shit. Cant no one touch him. NO ONE. Not even 2Pac, and i love 2Pac. But Z-RO is the greatest.

and KRS aint even mention the greatest lyricist/poet/intellectual ever to make hip-hop music, BROTHER ALI, and that cat in his prime RIGHT NOW. Mainstream makes me sick, real talk.

What's up with all the hate at the end of your blog Reckless?
Rappers don't have to be super talented to want to preseve Hip Hop.

And how you gonna say?
"Hov is just making a bunch of noise over a sloppy beat because he knows he can do it and make it look acceptable".

You must not have listened to Kingdom Come cause lyrically and production wise it was a very good album.

KRS is the truth and we all need to listen up when he talks about this stuff. Hip Hop died last year and Now she's back.
It's only comfusing to you idiots out there.

Hey ESSEX!

I like what KRS1 is trying to do. However, I don't think these old heads are the ones that'll be able to bring HipHop back to where it used to be. Shit, I'm not sure if the majority of people WANT it back like that.

Sup world
yeh i hear what reckless is sayin, and to a degree what common is saying. most ''commercial rappers'' arent too concerned with the essence of hip hop for the main fact that it dont pay, so his list of underground niggas, i cosign, coulda put jedi mind tricks in there, but thats just my opinion. the commercial ones? i c where he was going with Kanye, cos he actually has somethin to say on his joints and to a degree luda, if hes talking about having a good time and all that, even tho i dont fucks wit d kid, he a rapper, not an emcee, and so is erryone else on the list, i cant see em tryin to preserve anything/

Yo Reckless get your mind right, don't you realize what KRS mean, it's all about unity you can't exclude Ludacris, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne or Will.i.am because whether you like it or not they are part of hip hop and we are all in the same boat if shit sinks we all drown together.

are you serious, reckless?
every name you mention from Rakim to immortal technique has a strong fan base. not to mention the lyrical messages, we need to hear but also the feeling of pride, unity, and safety for old and new HIPHOP fans that we can get going 2 the concerts, clubs, and on the streets. real HIPHOP lovers, want to see this music change for the better, because we tired of the negative press. I realize reckless, you wouldnt have a job if you didnt report the bullshit that plague the HIPHOP community on the regular, huh!

Isn't it obvious what we are ALL trying to do? Nas, Rakim, DJ Premiere, Kanye West, Buc Shot, Talib Kweli, MC Lyte, Russell Simmons, Afrika Bambaataa, Will I AM, Dr. Cornell West, De La Soul, the TATs Cru, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, Ludacris, JS One, Rock Steady Crew, Immortal Technique and many others are ALL trying to refocus Hip Hop and preserve its original intent of artistic excellence, peace, love, unity and safely having fun. -KRS ONE

I cosign KRS one!
yall niggas is dumb!
yall killin hip hop the way yall think!
which makes yall not wanna support the preservation artist.
(preservation: To maintain in safety from injury, peril, or harm; protect.)

First off, Reckless u a hating ass bitch with a sandy vigina.

I respect KRS' career and his love of the culture, but sometimes he comes off super arrogant saying that HE knows hip hop (nigga even invented the spelling of it right GTFOH) and everything that he doesnt aprove of isn't hiphop. When i think of the NY state of mind in hiphop, KRS-1 is the mascot. But i do give him props for givin shine to a diverse list of artist, at least that shows he aint a hater. But most of these NY niggas posting are, including u Reckless.

Hip Hop Lives will sale 19 copies. not 20, because somebody will return it.

BOBBY D
He's too pushy and too preachy. People don't want to hear that now-a-days. I love KRS1, but its rappers like him that make people hate NY

lil wayne has talent but hes real commerical. and sometimes it just sounds like hes feeling himself too much for his own damn good. luda's nice, but he didnt deserve the grammy. and hov, i dunno, it seems hes sacrificing lyrical complexity for dinero. and also, from the looks of it, hes doing a terrible job running def jam. nas, the roots, method man, etc aint getting no shine!

I gotta agree with Reckless on this one, however I don't feel that Lil Wayne embodies Hip Hop I think his subject matter has much to be desired, he has rhyme scheme though, which is more than I can say for Papoose. But I think if Hip Hop comes alive I don't think it should be declared. Declaration breeds disappointment, everyone saying they were going to bring the city back didn't; that's big shoes to fill. And with hov putting the B.S. he's putting out now I think the throne is empty. Nas clearly doesn't want it. I think that attemping to sit on the throne In NYC is altimately what might have killed NYC Hip Hop. Hip Hop was at it's best when people loved to do music as opposed to the money made by it. Money seems to me to have been the key figure in the Sophmore jinx; comfortability takes the struggle and hustle out of most people. Money mixed with artistry in out case has brought out the machismo in even soft rap cats. Unfortunately the rap game for the past 7 to 8 years has become very general. I'm looking forward to some of Rukus's draft picks and the return of Loud. I'd also like to see Talib and Mos do an ALBUM together because they are sub-par separately. KRS-one has my respect being he is KRS but I've found that his relevance with this generation of Hip Hopper is nill. they couldn't name one song of the Boom Bap album, or Criminal minded. The game is supposed to get more creative because we are the innovators of the world, I just think we need to stop slapping each others kids, and shooting mom's homes up and get to making this shit into protectingkids and respecting the elders, this ain't where hip hop was supposed to go but even wall street has Bear times.

In my opinion, this is why we can't get ahead. You are posting a blog about nothing but negativity. Why can't the album sell? Why can't the list of names on the album have some impact on hip hop? It's like you're already planting the seed of failure to rebuild hip hop in bringing it back to it's positive light, from which it came from. Alot of these younger people that read this blog have NO CLUE what real hip hop sounds like. They only know what's current as true hip hop which in my opinion is BULLSHIT over a somewhat decent beat. I say, give the ablum a chance, it might blow up.

@ Bobby and Rocky

Wow I can feel the heat coming from down there. KRS one is not representative of NYC Hip Hop, he is respected like one of those old men that you visit in a home and tells you a story and you feel obligated to listen. We respect him because he went into another part of town dissed the m and had them cheering for him while he was getting at them and the fact that he is a veteran, but your really putting Me as a Brooklynite in a Box and Other cats from NY that might prefer Bun B and Pimp C over the Dips or Outkast over the Wu. The whole we up here yall down their shit should be dead, the Civil war was over in 1855 i think lets do (Good) music and not worry about whose from where. Or what you think everyone from there is like. Assuming shows a lack of maturity.

Hip Hop Lives will sale 19 copies. not 20, because somebody will return it.

Posted by: bobby drake at April 24, 2007 8:28 AM

Just like your Boss Hogg Outlaws?
How many copies did Devin the Dude sell?
8 Ball & MJG anyone?
Redman? Sean Price? Prodigy?

LAMO

Correction KRS one is representative of NYC Hip Hop just not this era. He's represents the Golden age in my opinion, right now I think we're in the Wood age.

and hov, i dunno, it seems hes sacrificing lyrical complexity for dinero. and also, from the looks of it, hes doing a terrible job running def jam. nas, the roots, method man, etc aint getting no shine!

what i don't understand is what do yall want from Jay-z? I don't think Kindom Come was a classic, but it was one of the best releases of 2006 hands down. his lyrical ability didn't go anywhere if u took the time to listen to what he was saying. He's one of the few rappers that has grown up in life and music. a good rapper can rap about what's going on in his CURRENT life, and Kindom Come hit on everything from grown and sexy club jams, being 30, the trouble with being with a famous, his moma, beefs, katrina, what more do people want? yall want his to rap about selling coke and kickin it on the block like this was 97 again?

plus, Jay aint callin every shot at Def Jam like everyone thinks. It might be his fault the Roots, Method, Ghost, and Redman didn't get promo, might not. but let's face it, them niggas was gonna flop anywayz, hate to say it. so why put all that advertising money behind it. Nas got hella promo. 2 videos released so far, with 2 on the way, he was all over MTV and BET when Kingdom Come dropped, and even had specials on both channels when HHID dropped. Alot of people just didn't buy the album. And when people mention Jay's job as Pres of Def Jam, no one mentions the good things. Luda, Rick Ross, Jeezy, Juelz, all plat. Rhianna, Neo, plat plus.

BIG SUN
Hey you! I don't have no beef in regards to KRS1 (I rep the BX all day.) I just feel like people outside NY think he is the spokesperson. I just want it to be clear that he is not, Jay is not, Nas is not. NY speaks as a whole when need be. I respect KRS1 for what he's brought to the forefront. Can you imagine a world without all this great music? At the same time, I think that he needs to look for what he deems his prototype- bring that person out. Don't sit there and preach about what should and shouldn't be. There are so many different opinions as to what constitutes good music. Who put him in charge? Obviously there is a major generation gap in the world we live in. Music included. Hiphop especially. Its gonna take thes little kids that are coming up to bring it back IMO.

Why have one thrown?

Yo Reckless get your mind right, don't you realize what KRS mean, it's all about unity you can't exclude Ludacris, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne or Will.i.am because whether you like it or not they are part of hip hop and we are all in the same boat if shit sinks we all drown together.

There are so many different opinions as to what constitutes good music. Who put him in charge?

Damn. How you sound calling people salty that post from NY up in NYC... I'm just saying.

Its not that his album (KRS) can't sell- it just won't.

CAPTAIN SMACK ASS
I didn't put him on a pedestal. He worked his way up there himself. I admire that he did so. So I give credit where it is due.

money and politics is what put hip hop where it is today.. back then it was alot of artists that was more serious with their artform and for the love of the music....

@ Rocky the cutie
There are alot of people on here talking about KRS and his often times "president and rulemaker of hip hop" attitude but I don't think you really know where he's coming from.

How many people on this blog besides me can say they've bomed graffitti on trains? Breakdanced on cardboard or nanolium? Battled emcee's from every borough of your city?

Not many if any.

You got to understand his veiw of this whole thing. He's done it all as far as what an emcee can do to strive for perfection as well as uplift the communiy.
KRS has a lot of right to tell people the correct spelling and things of that nature because quite frankly. Like it or not

He is the embodiment of Hip Hop.

I wouldn't call him that unless he is doing what D4L did for Atlanta

Lol. Thanks ESSEX.

I see where he's coming from, and respect it. But I also believe that if you want respect, you gotta give it too.

I don't discredit these wack rappers too much. They are actually smart. They KNOW how to make money off this game. It is about watering it down so that it can be takin in by the masses. That's why southern music is making money right now. Is the music more or less bullshit? Yes. But Im not knocking their game.

I think that KRS1 THINKS people have forgotten about him and all his accolades. We haven't. But it is a new era. There are some that will still remember things back when they were- but there are most that would like to move on and see where the music goes. I'm right in the middle.

Bump all those artist mention. I'm talking about some fresh meat already. I know what KRS, Nas, Luda yada, yada has already alot of those cats mention in that list thier heads haven't been into Hip Hop for a minute most of them are corporate cronies. With that being said who's coping Joel Ortiz today? I'm sure there crickets out there. We just need real young hungry cats in this game already that aren't afraid to just do them and trying to follow suit like the rest of these fabricated corporate rapper robots. But then again it's a new era and these kids have been listening to simpleton bubble gum rap for a minute. The bar for creativity needs to be raised already.

TRIPLE OG STAN (I like CAPTAIN SMACK ASS BETTA)

Lol. Word? I thought most old ladies hide their money in their soggy ass breasts...

@ Soufside.
your a hater on the we don't like Kanye bandwagon. I bet you wasn't saying that shit when "Two Words" dropped.

What other producer from the CHI is doing ya'll justice?

How can Kanye be a disgrace to the CHI and Crucial Conflict ain't?

y'all are just bunch of idiots..including you reckless. if you dont agree with krs-one, maybe your arse needs a lil bit of knowledge..hiphop is a state of mind, a way of living. just as i dont glorify gangstas/drugdealers/gangbangers and the rest of them muthafuckas in the street who thinks their way of life is really living, i equally dont cosign them bastards in the industry glorifying this idiotic way of living. old or young, we all can make a difference if we get our heads out of these gangsta mentality and put on a winning mentality. it doesnt matter how you rap or talk the talk..its your subject matter that counts..i dont give a monkeys if your dope beat came from dr dre, timbaland, or you got the laffy-taffy beat from lil jon, at the end leave something worthwhile so that the listeners can at least take something away with them..hip hop lives..cop the damn album

MR 908
That's what I'm talking about. I actually like Joel Ortiz. I won't be copping off one song though. So, him dropping an album today is like him wanting to flop.

ok i guess its an oversimplification to blame hov for some of the dudes i mentioned earlier flopping. but alot of the dudes you mentioned are designed to be crossover stars. but like with method man, he didnt even get a video for his last album. ghost did well with fishscale, he went gold with one video (correct me if im wrong). but then what happened with more fish?
as for what im saying about hov's lyrics, yeah i know hes not gonna be talking about hustling on the corner no more and i dont mind that. but what about the constant beyonce duets? haha im just saying man.
as for krs, i hope he pushes some records. realistically i dunno if he could go gold, just judging from the atmosphere right now. lots of kids dont even know krs. he definitely still has a fan base though (and not the kinda fans mims has either)

MR 908
I'll check it out in a bit (the myspace.) But the simple fact that he only has a street buzz is why he needed to just chill with the album. There's no need rushing something that may have great shit on it. Then what? He's gonna do a Beyonce and re-release the same shit and call it a new album? That's just dumb on his part.

I don't know if I'm feeling Reggie's new ish. I peeped the video and just wasn't interested. I like his verse on Joe Buddens' song though. He dissed the shit out of DefJam. I caught that this morning and was LMAO.

First off, good luck on the flop KRS-One

Co-sign bobby drake's first comment. Reckless is once again hating and that is a diverse list of rappers that actually attempt to spit hot lyrics. Did you even phucking listen to Kingdom Come? Besides Show Me What You Got and Anything, the whole album either talked about his problems or criticizing these new rappers. WTF else do you expect him to talk about?

Anyway, Reckless is just pissed that KRS-One didnt dick ride Nas more. Well as much as he already does.

Why would Knye be a disgreace to Chicago!?

It's obvious that guys are hatin' on him for no reason, he done helped cats like Rhymefest, Common, and Lupe get their shyne on, or you think these guys experienced some success just because they got talent? Hell no, i ain't from Chicago but if i was i would be proud of him cuz he broke a lotta barriers in the hiphop game.

comedy quotes in music

"Record sales keeps hip hop alive" - Jezzy

"I dont consider myself a rapper, I'm a motovational speaker" - Jezzy

He sounds like Pun a bit. Pun and someone else. I can't put my finger on it.

Posted by: Rocky at April 24, 2007 9:49 AM

Na he needs to come out. All these new cats are waiting too long ex..pap, Saigon and many more. By them holding back there just pro longing this BS rap era. Hip Hop sales is just going back to old day's where most just went gold but I never cop an album off the strengh of sales. I read the reviews in articles and what I hear then I make my decision. Hell when I was buying Jay-z albums in the days I never even cared he was going plat all I know is that shit was bumping. That shit seems to be a big concern on the net though what dudes are selling. Oh Red's album is sick he still comes with the punch lines and I thought the production was well rounded he some west, north and south influenced beats. It's a good album and that superman luva is off the hook one of the best one's done next to the one on his first album.

We're goin' back 2 Miami 2 games over the Heat after 2night.

Ey Dre...I'm ridin with ya Bulls until they come over here on my side.

I ain't really watched or checked up on em much down here in the Tone until the playoffs, and I gotta say that first game was the best game of the playoffs so far.

They ain't deep enough for the Spurs though, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there...if ya'll make it through.

Why is Kanye a disgrace? I find him to be refreshingly different. He's got lyrics for days a different style and he's a non-conformist I think thagt pretty much embodies hip hop.

Kayne is fruity, but his beats are tight and his lyrics. I thought it was gangsta how he stood up for himself when he didn't win. Niggas is afraid to do that shit. I know if I'm better than everyone else and I didn't win I would probably do the samething.

There will never be a king of nyc and there will never be a one person to bring it back some would say it never left. Its coo if everyone has they own opinion but nyc niggas have more then a opinion, they will degrade another nyc artist just to big up their favorite nyc artist so there is no respect up there. Reckless is a prime example. so is that bitch in that radio station and the album sales even reflect it. say im lyin and word to nyc's fav artist you niggas is gay if u say in lyin.

some niggas will say that dip set run nyc and some will say that g unit is the best but they wont say that with out giving props to jim jones for sellin what he sold independently. everybody hates dip set but at least give jimmy props for makin a nyc anthem that was well respected in the clubs nation wide had football players baaaallin. but hey its yall city and now yall got me soundin like krs 1 and PZ preachin so let me stop lol. yall do what ya do, to each its own and the real recognize real and the fake goin fade away

WHY ARE YOU SO MADD
I mean the same sht happens in the south
the TI vs Lil Flip arguments
the ATL VS HOUSTON artist DEBATES
Then the West Coast vs everyone else debates
its all the same sht
even the west coast has The Bay and they have their sound.
only reason NY is like that to me
is because there's so many people in different burroughs. The music and the vibe is totally different from burrough to borrough. Queens artist don't sound sht like BK artist.
Not just content but the beats and rhymes and style is totally different.
Harlem and Yonkers are on their own sht too. Thats pretty much all it is. Every coast or region has this just NY has some many fkin rappers its way more obvious. But just cause someone is from you hometown or your state doesn't mean you have to co-sign their sht.

See, if you're concsious or whatever...your not allowed but a certain amount of shine. KRS 1 still rappin? aint that the dude who got put in his place by nelly? man he's old. start a rap label and put out some new acts who represent your so called "hip hop". It not our fault u broke. Even MJ had to retire. its time for these old rappers to do the same. Jay-Z's last album was too slow tempo & missing that street edge and nas is a beast with lyrics but it sound like he still using beats from 1995.

Bottom Line: Its always gonna be "what have you done for me lately" so old rappers, step your game up but stop complaining that the game is fcked up if aint putting out a 5 mic album to change it.

The same nigga talking shit about Kayne is the same ones that want niggas to be walking around with Jeans 3 sizes to big and XXXXL Hoodies. Anytime someone different comes along people always got some shit to say. But isnt that the reason Hip Hop was fun at first because everybody was different.

@VICTOR NEWMAN

I like Jeezy but theres a huge different
A Jeezy doesn't care about being the best he just wants to get paid and have fun.
Biggie put a ton of effort into his rhymes to be respected. Perfect example is " The Whut and Unbelievable"
Lyrically he was showing off.
B. Big regretted having to sell drugs on songs like Everyday struggle and Suicide there was remorse in his sht
I don't get any of that from Jeezy.
He damn near advertises sellin crack.
Jeezy Adlibs alot they're funny but I can't recall Big ever doing dat sht.

the differences are really endless only similarities are they both sold drugs

I was told the same thing about Weezy, so I listened 2 his shit, & that's the truth, he has a way with vocabulary, although 1/2 of it is ignorant, it is what it is, just don't expect me 2 be calling him the gr8est rapper out, he's aiight though.

So what do u say about the biggie and Jeezy comparison?

Posted by: Banga! at April 24, 2007 10:41 AM

Co-Sign, its the diversity that Big brings to table the while Jeezy is still one demensional and the only thing he got going for him is his coke sale fables.

Also Victor let's not forget too how much of Jeezy's cuts are filled with alib fillers. His vocabulary is very limited his just good at what he does club cuts. Which I think most of it is due to the beat and hook his using. That's cool but he does not fall in the catagory as a lyrical emcee which we all know Biggie does

start a rap label and put out some new acts who represent your so called "hip hop".

Posted by: dwayne austin at April 24, 2007 10:40 AM
------------------------------------
OOOOOO WEEEEEE THAT'S SOME TRUTH RIGHT THERE!

Start a rappers union, politic for health coverage, etc.

It all boils down to these "rappers" who wanna speak on this "saving hip hop" just speaking opinions and people agree or disagree, all in hopes if it ultimately increasing their records sales.

Ain't nobody doing nothin to save hip hop, but making more music. That ain't gonna save hip hop.

Infiltrate the business mindstate behind hip hop, and when you do...then you can change it. Do so at the lowest level by creating a Union...that ain't hard to do! NBA got one, NHL got one, MLB got one, almost every serious field of work has one.

So what do u say about the biggie and Jeezy comparison?
