"You know, there's talented rappers everywhere, and one West Coast rapper who I like and respect is Game, because to me, he has a New York style. But I don't like a lot of West Coast rappers. West Coast rap is too laid back, too focused on marijuana with all the blunts and lowriders. There's nothing honest. There's no trouble in it, you know? There's no hardship in it. Everyone in L.A. that raps has a lowrider and a fat blunt. Back here in New York, we're still walkin' and still smokin' dirt, you know? There's no hardship in their rap, there's nothin' to make you say, 'I can relate to that.'"
Where did this come from?
Not for nothin, a bunch of classic shit came from out of the West Coast. That's just one region you can't discredit. I respect the West for what they did; they were putting out some real music back in the days. Who can forget Snoop with his "Jin and Juice," N.W.A, "No Vaseline," and "I Got Five on It" (to name a very, very few)? Maaaaaaaan listen. I wouldn't mind another West Coast comeback.
But, I guess when you get tired of handing out free dictionaries for Southerners copping Illmatic, you want pull down your pants and shit on something else for a change. However, these comments were outlandish, irrelevant, and from way over in left field. He must've been on that shit during that interview. Don't pay him no mind.
But still, I ask, where did he get this from?

Blacks are Moving South: Is this the Second Great Black Migration?

Editor’s Note: Here’s another classic out the Rachel’s Tavern Archive. Thanks to frequent commenter “me†I have found that I can recover some of my lost files. THis was one of those lost files that was originally published in Nov. 2005. At the time, I think it received more comments than any other thread to date. I figured I would repost it in response to some comments on the immigration thread.
Nov 26 2005 (Quickly written and Not Yet Proofed.)
The AP recently reported on a trend that has been happening over the past 10 years: the second Great Black Migration. The first Great Black migration occured in the middle 20th Century, particularly from the 1940s-1970s. (Nicholas Lemann’s The Promised Land is an excellent book on this subject.) Many poor African Americans from the rural south left and moved to northern cities in search of a better economic opportunities. Cities like Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, and New York were profoundly changed by the influx of Black immigrants. In fact, several midwestern cities today have very large African American populations largely because of this migration.
When I lived in Detroit the connection between the city’s Black residents and their southern ancestors was very strong. It was evident in the dialect of the people, the eating habits, and some of the everyday customs. In fact, many northern Blacks refer to the south as “home†even if they have not lived there.
Given this connection to the south it is not surprising that many Blacks are moving back to the south. The AP article makes the following observations:
A recent study by The Brookings Institution found that the South has had a net in-migration of more than 566,000 blacks since 1995, while the other three regions all had net losses, reversing a decades long trend of Southern black flight. The same study found that college-educated blacks led this new charge back to the South.
“Whites who are moving there are doing it for the economy, the warm weather, the amenities they’re not moving there to eat grits and become Southerners,†said demographer William H. Frey, the study’s author. “For blacks, the economy’s important for them too. But they see it as coming home. There’s a strong cultural bond.â€
According to the Brookings Study, Blacks moved out of the northeast in large numbers, out of the west and the midwest in modest numbers, and into the south in large numbers. The states with the largest gains in Black populations between 1995-2000 were: Georgia, North Carolina, Florida, Maryland, Texas, and Virginia, and the metro areas with the biggest gains in Black residents were Atlanta, Dallas, Charlotte, Orlando, LasVegas, and Norfolk-Virginia Beach. In contrast, the states with the biggest losses in Black population were New York, California, Illinois, New Jersey, and Washington DC (I know it’s not a state, but it is on the list.), and the metro areas with the biggest losses were New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Detroit, and New Orleans. (Louisiana was one of the only southern states to lose Black population, and New Orleans was one of the only southern cities to lose Black residents. All of this was well before Katrina. A trend that is sure to increase after the hurricane.)
What is also different about this Great Migration is that it is not being lead by working class and poor African Americans looking for jobs. Instead, middle class African Americans are leading the move south, causing a “Black Brain Drain†in the north and a “Black Brain Gain†in the south.
While we know that Blacks are moving to the south, the studies on the specific motivations still need to be conducted. Obviously, some of them will be economic. However, there also seems to be a strong cultural connection to the south as this quote from the article suggestions,
Charles Evers, 82, is part of a generation of blacks who endured the worst of the South before desegregation. His brother, former NAACP leader Medgar Evers, was murdered by a white racist in Mississippi in 1963.
Still, he thinks of the South as a place of unending opportunity for blacks, whites and everyone in between.
“I’ve traveled all over the world, and I’ll tell you: There is no place as honest as the South about its racial feelings,†he said. “I think it can be the most wonderful place in the world if we can just keep making the progress we have.â€
If the migration figures are any indication, many younger Black folks agree with Evers. The trend shows no sign of ending soon.

I remeber when N.W.A. came out with the song "Fuck The Police", that song caused confusion and violence all over the country. Then, Tim Dogg was forced to make the song "Fuck Compton" that fuled the East vs West situation.
I think that in The South, we need to just stick to doing ourselves like Outkast, Arrested Development, Nappy Roots do, we don't need to be Crypts or Bloods, just be yourselves.

i'm not sure what kind of anwser your looking for, but i will say that with the majority of black people moving down south, the southern hybrids of hiphop are going to be the new basics. earlier in hiphop, every region had to basicaly sound like they was from NY, and only added a little bit of their region's flava. now it will be the same. u think MIMS is a southern swagga jacker? give it another 10 years, and most NY will sound like that (minus the wack lyrics, maybe).

You see, what a lot of people don't know is that Southern Rap has been around since the earliest day's of Hip Hop, We had to find a way to fit in, so niggas like UGK, Master P and 8ball & MJG started talking about the same shit The Wset Coast did, they used West Coast slang and all that shit.
In the beggining, Southern Rap was all about the Southern Lifestyle, but we felt that the industry wouldn't accept that. But Southern Acts like Outkast, Arrested Development and Luke & 2 Live Crew brought Southern Hip Hop to it's proper form.

Actually, I'm originally from Alabama. My last post came up about the same time as yours did. Care to explain how the South is so backwards? You can't use your Katrina argument you used earlier. Just how you were embarrassed for those people, we were to. The whole point of my posts on "discussions" like this is for people to see how narrow-minded they sound sometimes. It does nothing for you to say "Fuck the south" and you have no legitimate beef with south. Granted if you had a traumatic experience in the south then I'm sorry to hear that but I don't know your life like that.

DMX isn't reluvent enough in hip hop to judge hip hop. I don't know anyone who has him in their top ten favorite rappers. The West coast pick up the slack when the East coast was dead. Now the south own hip hop. There are some Canadians and Africans that are nice MC's, so pretty soon the America wont even be the top biller.
