"You know, there's talented rappers everywhere, and one West Coast rapper who I like and respect is Game, because to me, he has a New York style. But I don't like a lot of West Coast rappers. West Coast rap is too laid back, too focused on marijuana with all the blunts and lowriders. There's nothing honest. There's no trouble in it, you know? There's no hardship in it. Everyone in L.A. that raps has a lowrider and a fat blunt. Back here in New York, we're still walkin' and still smokin' dirt, you know? There's no hardship in their rap, there's nothin' to make you say, 'I can relate to that.'"
Where did this come from?
Not for nothin, a bunch of classic shit came from out of the West Coast. That's just one region you can't discredit. I respect the West for what they did; they were putting out some real music back in the days. Who can forget Snoop with his "Jin and Juice," N.W.A, "No Vaseline," and "I Got Five on It" (to name a very, very few)? Maaaaaaaan listen. I wouldn't mind another West Coast comeback.
But, I guess when you get tired of handing out free dictionaries for Southerners copping Illmatic, you want pull down your pants and shit on something else for a change. However, these comments were outlandish, irrelevant, and from way over in left field. He must've been on that shit during that interview. Don't pay him no mind.
But still, I ask, where did he get this from?

Blacks are Moving South: Is this the Second Great Black Migration?

Editor’s Note: Here’s another classic out the Rachel’s Tavern Archive. Thanks to frequent commenter “me†I have found that I can recover some of my lost files. THis was one of those lost files that was originally published in Nov. 2005. At the time, I think it received more comments than any other thread to date. I figured I would repost it in response to some comments on the immigration thread.
Nov 26 2005 (Quickly written and Not Yet Proofed.)
The AP recently reported on a trend that has been happening over the past 10 years: the second Great Black Migration. The first Great Black migration occured in the middle 20th Century, particularly from the 1940s-1970s. (Nicholas Lemann’s The Promised Land is an excellent book on this subject.) Many poor African Americans from the rural south left and moved to northern cities in search of a better economic opportunities. Cities like Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, and New York were profoundly changed by the influx of Black immigrants. In fact, several midwestern cities today have very large African American populations largely because of this migration.
When I lived in Detroit the connection between the city’s Black residents and their southern ancestors was very strong. It was evident in the dialect of the people, the eating habits, and some of the everyday customs. In fact, many northern Blacks refer to the south as “home†even if they have not lived there.
Given this connection to the south it is not surprising that many Blacks are moving back to the south. The AP article makes the following observations:
A recent study by The Brookings Institution found that the South has had a net in-migration of more than 566,000 blacks since 1995, while the other three regions all had net losses, reversing a decades long trend of Southern black flight. The same study found that college-educated blacks led this new charge back to the South.
“Whites who are moving there are doing it for the economy, the warm weather, the amenities they’re not moving there to eat grits and become Southerners,†said demographer William H. Frey, the study’s author. “For blacks, the economy’s important for them too. But they see it as coming home. There’s a strong cultural bond.â€
According to the Brookings Study, Blacks moved out of the northeast in large numbers, out of the west and the midwest in modest numbers, and into the south in large numbers. The states with the largest gains in Black populations between 1995-2000 were: Georgia, North Carolina, Florida, Maryland, Texas, and Virginia, and the metro areas with the biggest gains in Black residents were Atlanta, Dallas, Charlotte, Orlando, LasVegas, and Norfolk-Virginia Beach. In contrast, the states with the biggest losses in Black population were New York, California, Illinois, New Jersey, and Washington DC (I know it’s not a state, but it is on the list.), and the metro areas with the biggest losses were New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Detroit, and New Orleans. (Louisiana was one of the only southern states to lose Black population, and New Orleans was one of the only southern cities to lose Black residents. All of this was well before Katrina. A trend that is sure to increase after the hurricane.)
What is also different about this Great Migration is that it is not being lead by working class and poor African Americans looking for jobs. Instead, middle class African Americans are leading the move south, causing a “Black Brain Drain†in the north and a “Black Brain Gain†in the south.
While we know that Blacks are moving to the south, the studies on the specific motivations still need to be conducted. Obviously, some of them will be economic. However, there also seems to be a strong cultural connection to the south as this quote from the article suggestions,
Charles Evers, 82, is part of a generation of blacks who endured the worst of the South before desegregation. His brother, former NAACP leader Medgar Evers, was murdered by a white racist in Mississippi in 1963.
Still, he thinks of the South as a place of unending opportunity for blacks, whites and everyone in between.
“I’ve traveled all over the world, and I’ll tell you: There is no place as honest as the South about its racial feelings,†he said. “I think it can be the most wonderful place in the world if we can just keep making the progress we have.â€
If the migration figures are any indication, many younger Black folks agree with Evers. The trend shows no sign of ending soon.

I remeber when N.W.A. came out with the song "Fuck The Police", that song caused confusion and violence all over the country. Then, Tim Dogg was forced to make the song "Fuck Compton" that fuled the East vs West situation.
I think that in The South, we need to just stick to doing ourselves like Outkast, Arrested Development, Nappy Roots do, we don't need to be Crypts or Bloods, just be yourselves.

i'm not sure what kind of anwser your looking for, but i will say that with the majority of black people moving down south, the southern hybrids of hiphop are going to be the new basics. earlier in hiphop, every region had to basicaly sound like they was from NY, and only added a little bit of their region's flava. now it will be the same. u think MIMS is a southern swagga jacker? give it another 10 years, and most NY will sound like that (minus the wack lyrics, maybe).

You see, what a lot of people don't know is that Southern Rap has been around since the earliest day's of Hip Hop, We had to find a way to fit in, so niggas like UGK, Master P and 8ball & MJG started talking about the same shit The Wset Coast did, they used West Coast slang and all that shit.
In the beggining, Southern Rap was all about the Southern Lifestyle, but we felt that the industry wouldn't accept that. But Southern Acts like Outkast, Arrested Development and Luke & 2 Live Crew brought Southern Hip Hop to it's proper form.

DMX isn't reluvent enough in hip hop to judge hip hop. I don't know anyone who has him in their top ten favorite rappers. The West coast pick up the slack when the East coast was dead. This is probably a stan, but I'm going to answer anyways. Reckless you get criticism everyday because quite frankly, you suck. See the problem is you're just a typical Hip Hop Bloggers, and those are the worst type of bloggers to have. You don't report on anything new, you don't say anything thought provoking, and you don't do any research. You just read the news ALREADY posted on this website, write three paragraphs of hate, and then let the usuals keep the conversation going off of something different. You're basically a waste of a job.
You write for SOHH NYC. As a southerner, I can honestly say that NY has had more important figures in rap music than the rest of the country combined. But what do you do? Talk about DipSet and G-Unit everyday. When you do managed to talk about someone from the past, it's usually a basic "what happened to them", and it's usually someone no one really cares about.
Here's an example of how a real blogger would write a blog. You could pick an artist - say Kool G Rap. Write about how he started, and who inspired him to rap. Write about his albums, and how he started the whole Mafioso rap trend. Then you could follow up with how many people he influenced, and even quote a few rap artists. Did you know that he's Bun B's favorite artist, and one of the main reasons he wanted to rap? Scarface is a major fan of his as well. Here's the tough part: write all that, without any hate or sneak dissing towards anyone.
Of course you can't do that, because require some actual knowledge of Hip Hop history, and everyone knows that you SOHH bloggers don't know shit about rap music. You all just went to school for journalism, bought a few cds, and became hip hop heads. There never is any sense of history in your posts. Shit nigga you live in NYC, and you didn't even know the lyrics to Ether???
You don't blog. You just copy and paste a few lines, and then talk shit for 3 paragraphs. Anyone over the age of 12 could do that. How about you put some effort in your blog, instead of hating on everyone just to get the big numbers.

East Coast niggas name the king of hip-hop according to whoever happens to be hot at the moment (and they MUST be from New York). Take for instance Jay-Z. I am going to let all those in NY know something. He is not the undisputed king in hip-hop to the rest of us in the country. He is YOUR king. Many of us can't understand why you would elevate such a corny person to royalty anyway.
Well here's my take on Jigga/Hova/Jayz/Jay-Z or whatever the hell he's calling himself today. I was on the East Coast between New York, Jersey, and Massachusetts the entire summer of 96. As hot as Reasonable Doubut was, nobody was really fucking with Jay hard at the time seeing how the first bullshit he comes with is "Ain't No Nigga ." That summer most people were listening to All Eyez on Me, which was released that previous February, and NY's new king for the moment Nas. While Biggie was recording tracks for Life After Death, Nas was ruling the charts (and "the world" for that matter with Lauryn Hill) with It Was Written.
More so in New York all you heard being played was Nas, LL Cool J, The Lost Boys, and Junior M.A.F.I.A. that summer of '96. Jay-Z was nobody until Biggie died; then all of a sudden Reasonable Doubt starts getting looked back upon in a better light. NY niggas then stripped the KING title from Nas who they considered too commercial because of LP's such as Nastradamus and singles such as "You Owe Me" (Okay, that was the worst song ever behind the stomach sickening track "Oochie Wally"). Funny because the East Coast niggas then contradicted themselves by giving The Blueprint a classic status when all Jay-Z did was put out corny singles such as "IZZO" (biting West Coast Slang) and talk about money and his alcoholic beverage. Because he was getting all this airplay he is the undisputed king even though when West Coast artists were dominating the radio (outside of NY of course) they were nobodies.
I feel Jay to be a rhyme biter more so than Puffy ever was a beat biter. The way Bush plays off people's emotions about 9/11, I believe Jay-Z has made a career playing off the emotions and sadness centered around Biggie's death. 30-42% of his rhymes are Biggie's, he has bitten Tupac's rhymes (after being bitched by him on the first track of "Makaveli"), and cannot even freestyle as he admits on number 13 of "The Blueprint" when he talks about "memorizing lines" as an exercise. He calls out Nas out on The Blueprint for lacking hot shit since Illmatic; but maybe he was just looking in the mirror because after Reasonable Doubt which was a classic minus "Ain't No Nigga", Jigga put out the same commercialized bullshit he was calling Nas out for while supposedly "trying to progress with this rap shit." "Undisputed king?" Okay...
Now when I got back to Atlanta that fall of ‘96, Outkast dropped “Atliensâ€Â. Now if I were to go up to an East Coast hip-hop critic and say that Atliens was a better album than Reasonable Doubt they would fall down laughing and then get up and try to do something. They would say that nobody was listening to Atliens and that Jay-Z’s interpretation of street life on that album was beyond competition. I would then slap the shit out of that critic and remind them that no one was listening to Reasonable Doubt heavily at that time. Outkast was getting more spins on Southern and Midwestern radio than Jay-Z was getting in his own city. Outkast perception of Southern street life with tracks such as Elevators(which Funkmaster Flex has noted confusion at why Hot 97 wasn't playing it), Two Dope Boyz (In a Cadillac), and Jazzy Belle related nothing to NY street life so therefore NY critics dismissed it.
By the way the only rapper from the South really worth mentioning is Andre 3000! Hes the only one that can come off on a beat without trying to put on a NY flow..unlike that man kisser Lil Wayne

I dont doubt his dedication. I just wish he would dedicate more time to becoming a better rapper, not just making tracks. When you walk around saying your the best alive, how are you gonna learn to become a better rapper if you think you're already the best. I would like to see more metaphors, cadence, actual rhyme scemes, and wordplay from him. I also think that he plays his voice up lately. When I say word play, I mean like not just rhyming the word at the end of the bar. Like if you listen to Eminem, how he rhymes throughout and not just at the end of the bar. Example, Eminem, as you read through you can tell he's rhyming off more than just the end of the bar..

yeah he has matured, listen to his shit back when he didnt cuss on his albums and shit, and when he used to rap with all them sounds, and then in 01 and 02 he was actually trying to upgrade his flow, you can tell it in his music, i've been listening to him from day one and watched him change his style up to the point it's at now, and i can tell that he's still trying to make it better, but right now he is dropping some dope rhymes so if he upgrades his style more i cant immagine how good he could be... in my opinion he has the potential to be one of the greats.
and yeah Game stepped his up, but he was working with Dre, look what happens when a nice rapper hooks up with Dre... when snoop first got with Dre snoop snoop wasnt rappin like he was, but dre got with snoop and said rap like this and say that rhyme this way... and it was a wrap after that.
