When we begin to trust the media is when we fail as a people. It's funny how blacks will take the word of a white man over the words of their own experiences growing up in the hood. We all know that in 2007 lynching has taken the form of character assassination thru various media outlets. They are trying us in the court of public opinion and we're allowing ourselves to be found guilty on a consistent basis. Look at NBA All Star weekend vs. SuperBowl Week. As many arrests were made there as were made in Vegas but, the media only focuses on Vegas. Why? Because the NBA is perceived as a hip hop influenced entity although there is only one Black owner. There also isn't an owner other than Cuban from the hip hop generation. The NFL is perceived as a corporate, white league. Even down to the field generals which are for the most part white men. At some point we have to awaken to the realization that white Amerikkka doesn't respect us because they know that they can manipulate us. We have to stop being pawns and rise to the king and queen level that we so richly deserve. We're so busy chasing them that we've left our own behind in the race for equality. 8 CHILDREN DIE IN BRONX FIRE

BRONX Sources tell CBS 2 News that a spaceheater in the basement could be to blame for the devastating fire that swept through a three-story brick home in the Bronx, killing eight children and one adult in New York City's deadliest blaze in 17 years.

Sources say that the fire is not suspicious at this point, but it is still under investigation.

In a news conference, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the fire might have resulted from a space heater or an overloaded power strip. He also iterated that spaceheaters and stoves are a dangerous way to heat residences.

"It was one small building but one very large tragedy for our city," Bloomberg said.

The mayor said that the home had two smoke alarms, but neither had batteries installed.

As part of the investigation will be a look at why it took 10 minutes to get water started on the fire.

There was a huge death toll despite so many valiant efforts to avert tragedy in the Bronx. Witnesses and neighbors describe a huge inferno that sent smoke billowing throughout the neighborhood. It was New York City's deadliest fire since Sept. 11.

There seemed to be so little damage to the outside of the three-story building but there was so much death and devastation within.

The child victims ranged in age from an infant to 10. A woman in her 40s also died. Bloomberg said 22 people lived in the house, all of whom were related and from the west African nation of Mali.

Images caught by CBS 2 cameras will stay seared in people's minds. These are the images of firefighter after firefighter running from the building carrying very young children out of the first floor and basement apartments.

The faces of grief-stricken family members and neighbors waiting for word of their friends and loved ones told the story.

Witnesses described to CBS 2 the horrific images of building residents throwing kids through broken windows to waiting Good Samaritans below.

Some of these heroic neighbors described tense moments as they tried to catch the young children jumping out of the windows to escape the blaze.

"All I see is just a big cloud of white dust and out of nowhere comes the first baby," said Edward Soto, who caught the child. He said he caught a second child thrown from the window moments later.

All the while, screams of "help me, help me" spread through the home, said Soto, who helped rescue the children along with fellow neighbor David Todd, 40.

Fire Department spokesman Seth Andrews confirmed the death toll early Thursday. Investigators were at the scene trying to determine the cause, which was not immediately known. The mayor, fire commissioner and other officials were scheduled to discuss the tragedy at a morning news conference.

At least 10 people were injured, five of them seriously. Four firefighters and one other emergency worker were hospitalized with minor injuries.

Michael Heller, spokesman at Jacobi Medical Center, said five children ranging in age from 2 to 6 were taken to the Bronx hospital. They are suffering smoke inhalation and burns, and three are in critical condition.

Heller said one of the victims -- an infant less than a year old -- died at Jacobi.

Errol Schneer, a spokesperson at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, said three victims were taken to the hospital, all of whom were dead on arrival. They included a woman in her 40s and two boys ages 4 and 9.

The smell of smoke lingered at the scene hours afterward. Windows of the house were broken out, and parts of the building were scorched. Charred pieces of rubble were piled up on the front porch. Emergency workers wrapped children in blankets and rushed them away from the fire. Adding to the misery, the victims were displaced on one of the coldest nights of the year.

Fatoumata Madassa, a relative of some of the residents who lives across the street, said four families lived in the building at 1022 Woodycrest Ave. She said they were immigrants from Mali, and that the four families have 17 children between them.

Madassa said she saw the fire, and her husband quickly ran to the blaze but there was too much smoke for him to help.

Neighbor Elaine Martin was one of the first to discover the fire. A shoeless woman in a nightgown was on the street, shivering in the blistering cold and frantically worrying about her children.

"My kids is in there, my kids is in there," Martin quoted the woman as saying.

David Robinson, who lives in the neighborhood, said the victims seemed to be a close-knit group. "The kids were always playing, either in the yard of their home or on the block with water guns and scooters."

The fire was reported shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday and was extinguished shortly after 1 a.m., Andrews said. It burned in the basement and first floor of the home in the Woodycrest neighborhood, Andrews said. The home is just a few blocks away from Yankee Stadium.

Neighbors said at least one of the families ran an import-export business, and a public records search lists African American Import Export at the address.

The block where the fire occurred is largely residential, including small apartment buildings, townhouses, and a couple of businesses and free-standing homes.

The injured people were taken to local hospitals including Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center, Jacobi Medical Center, and Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, Andrews said.

Five children and one adult were taken to Lincoln, hospital spokeswoman Jill Brookner said. She said their conditions were unavailable early Thursday, but two were to be taken to a burn unit for further treatment.

Multiple-death house fires are a fairly frequent occurrence in a city the size of New York, but rarely does the death toll approach what happened in the Bronx on Wednesday. In 1990, 87 people were killed in an illegal Bronx social club known as Happy Land.

I was telling one of my clients to get with her mom and consider purchasing a home so she can leave something 4 her kids now that she's working. She replied that she was moving out her mom's apartment and she could leave them her section 8 voucher IF she moved back to the projects.

What "system" are you referring to? The government? I just feel that in this country things are not perfect, there is racism, sexism, discrimination, there are a lot of things wrong with this country. But I also feel that everyone has an opportunity to do something, to be something, to become a productive citizen. Education is available to everyone(don't like your school system where you live, move! or put your child in another school, I did), we have the ability to make real money in this country, unlike most third world countries where they make pennies a day. I just wish people would stop complaining about what's wrong (if they aren't making real strides to change things) and focus on what's right!! Stop blaming a "system" for your short comings. We all have a chance to do better...you gotta get up get out and get something!

But I was handlin my own business makin my own money hustlin' and workin, and at that time...I couldn't understand why or how other folks would allow themselves to be lame like that. What if you do not have the money to move to a area with a different school system? Where are the factory jobs that were in the cities. Many have them have been outsourced to countries where they pay people $500 a year. Many uneducated people relied on these jobs to pay bills, take care of their kids etc. We all have a chance to better ourselves. Tell that kid whose parents are strung out on drugs. Tell the 14 year old who is so hungry b/c he has not ate a meal in a day to pay attention in class while his stomach is growling. It's a cycle and it will never change if someone does not fix it. You will get a few success stories, but on a whole the SYSTEM for poor people in the US is set where they will never get ahead.

She is responsible for that child, the government did not have her. Its just the way of life God has for us, u goin always have some people that our not doin shit and u goin best believe that theres always goin be peeps that are tryn to do something but there just takin one step foward and two back. my pops is a good man and tried hard for me and bro's but when we went to school i couldnt afford to switch scools my pops used to give us $2 a day for lunch then had to cut back on that, it got to the point where we had to eat noodles for lunch breakfast and dinner. but we did make it, but due to those things happening it did affect my school work which affected my college existince. Im not in college right now but i do plan on going. When i first turned 18 we got evicted and all the money i was savin up from my job i had to get us a house to stay in. then i had to get a car to drive to work in, i was doin 14 hours a day at my job which is illegal. All my credit is fucked up, i got a 2,000 dollar electric bill still in my name we got evicted from that house that was in my name but the land lord was coo and said that he wont file any papers he just told us to get out and shit, i got telephone bills in my name and i cant dispute these cuz the house and address was my shit even though i didnt use these. unless i send my pops to jail, so taking out loans to goto college is hell for me. its a longer story but to make it short, not everyone has it easy but u do have to get up and go to work i do agree with u on that, but its not all cookies and cream

I will say from experience too though, that there is some room for improvement in the system. I believe for people trully exhibiting the desire to improve and step up...there should be additional assistance.

And I say this from experience. I got married young and while I was working and doing all I could, it still was not enough for me to afford the medical insurance for me and my pregnant wife. So I got on medicaid.

Well, then I got a little bitty pay increase. That put me just over the limit for medicaid. So I still had a pregnant wife, but made just too much to afford medicaid and did not receive enough of an increase to be able to afford health coverage.

Oh believe me...I know its not cookies and cream...I didn't grow up with a silver spoon either or a two parent household, my mother was single, always worked two jobs...there were times that we went without, times that utilities were cut off, times that rent wasn't paid on time...but my mother never gave up...she persevered, kept pushing and encouraged my sister and me to strive for excellence...my mother was a good example for me...always worked, always professional...that was my role model...my mom is 56 years old and when she was 49 years old she graduated with an MBA from Johns Hopkins...its never too late...you have to WANT to do better...you have to want it...its hard out here for some people, true...but always remember that there is somebody out there with a story worse than yours...if anything that would make me want to do more...I'm sorry...people have more excuses than a nigga going to jail...and we want things to happen overnight...but it takes hard work, dedication and FAITH IN GOD.

Thats actually how I felt about Katrina. I mean don't get me wrong, I donated money and everything, my heart went out to those people, both black and white that were shunned by the government for days.

I had my daughter when I was 17, I could have easily dropped out of school and jumped into the endless cycle of public assistance and section 8, but that wasn't what I was taught, I've been working since I was 17 years old and I've never been to college a day in my life, but I have still managed to make a comfortable life for myself and my family and I've learned from my past experiences and I pass that down to my daughter in the hopes that she will avoid some of the pitfals that I didn't and most important I lead by example by being a hardworking, tax paying citizen...its not easy, but its what we have to do what we have to do...

Young man, you can't even come to me like that. I MOVED to San Antonio as an adult man who struggled to come UP and OUT of the hood...used government assistance as it was intended, took self responsibility by the horns and ran with it.

how come when u slip up on yo payments they take away yo liscense?
thats fucked up, so now he do find a job and its far away and theres no bus route that goes that way, yeah he can have someone use his car and drop him off but what if he dont have any family, what if he moved out of state to be with his wife and they got divorced and she took the kids and hit him up on child support he broke down and start takin drugs, but then he is tryn to turn his life around and get to that job but he cant cuz he has no liscense and no family to drop him off, so he drives and gets pulled over and the cycle continues...

Ya know what i went to go get that information on that school bus thing and it is K-12 grade and its not 5 miles but 3.5 or something but here it is:

1. What is a DPS-RTD bus pass?
This is a free monthly RTD pass that is given to students who would be eligible for DPS
school bus transportation and next year will ride RTD.
2. Who is eligible for the DPS-RTD Student Pass?
Any student who is otherwise eligible to ride a school bus is eligible for a DPS-RTD pass at
no charge. There has been no change in transportation eligibility guidelines. This means that a
student who resides more than 3.5 miles from his/her neighborhood school and attends this
school, or a student who attends a magnet program and resides more than 3.5 miles from the
location of the magnet program, is eligible for transportation. Call the Transportation Hotline
at 303-825-2611 if you have questions about transportation eligibility.
Students who attend a school other than their neighborhood school through the choice
process will not be eligible for a DPS-RTD student pass.

If you have a 401k, those is the areas to have a grip of your investments pointed at.

And if they given high school students bus passes instead of the school bus...I'd say that works. But same thing, you run the risk of somebody come up missing, but that's anywhere with anything. I'm sure that they looked at the potential threats, actual offenses as well as cost savings when they decided to go that route.

With decisions like that, there is never one man with a gavel saying "let's do it this way and that's how it's gonna be".

As of today, Denver residents no longer will have to fumble through a telephone book squinting at the government listings if they've got a gripe they want to register with a city agency.

The city plans to debut its 311 call center at 6 a.m. The new system allows city residents to access any city agency by dialing 311.

The nonemergency number was a top priority of Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper's. He touted it as a way to make the public sector more responsive to city residents.

"I think 311 has the potential to be the most significant innovation in local government in the last decade," Hickenlooper said Thursday. "Whatever someone needs from local government, they can call three numbers and get it. That's a huge step forward in terms of customer service."

Denver's 311 call center is modeled after existing ones in New York, Houston, Baltimore, Chicago, Indianapolis, Albuquerque and Austin, Texas.

Denver invested $3.5 million to set up the system. Annual costs are expected to reach about $1.5 million.

The center will respond to telephone calls from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week. It will be staffed on holidays.

"It's just a matter of blocking and tackling at this point," said Michael Locatis III, the city's chief information officer.

The system crystallizes the 1,200 telephone numbers for city services into one easily accessible location. Call takers will rely on a powerful database to navigate the maze of city agencies.
