While I agree that there are more pressing issues than the n-word (something that we can't control institutionally, but rather culturally), I disagree with one point:

1. your disdain for Black History Month. If you do quick research on it through Wikipedia, you'll see that it was our ancestors who made it in recognition of one of the first Black heroes (Frederick Douglass), and no, it wasn't a white person's creation to backhandedly compliment Blacks, but an honest effort by Carter G. to make something happen for us.

For the most part, I thought your point was well-written, and we need more activism on every end of our kaleidoscope of problems. Thanks for the note.

The major flaw of a democracy is POLITICS. Nothing ever gets done because everything is political. Democrats will reject a bill by republicans out of spite and vice versa even if the bill is needed. This is a prime example.

The lawmakers in NYC also banned transfat (the fat in grease that is the most unhealthiest) not because it's unhealthy but for political reasons. They wanted to cater to the health nuts in NY and now they're doing the same thing. They are basically throwing blacks a bone making black "leaders" happy and some old folks but it's just to get their minds off the major issues.

To change America the ENTIRE country would have to boycott the democrats and republicans. When elections come around vote for independent parties but it won't happen. If it did it would force change.

Put it this way, if you knew no matter what your wife wouldn't leave you wouldn't you take advantage of it and ignore her needs, maybe cheat on her, maybe beat her? Now what if she threatened to leave you forever? You'd fix your ways.

I somewhat agree on the banning on the N-word although it's easier said than done, because i dont know when i'll stop using it. the only reason i agree with this is for the fact that we as black people need to change our culture and this could be a start. i know the politician who did this was just doing it to make himself look good, but if you think about it we need to start a change in our culture somewhere and i think that's the best place to start, but if you would have got better people to lead this movement other than Leroy Comrie & Michael Richards it may work.

Aight, here is my take on it.

It is a great "gesture", and I definetly agree that the "n" word needs to vanish from use. But I have a problem with the government creating a law to enforce what IT thinks on the people.

If anything...it needs to go up for vote before the people, and the majority of the people need to decide whether they feel a law is appropriate or not.

Someone posted earlier that they do not think "white" america cares if blacks use the word against each other. Ok then, if that is true...then they probably will not vote on the measure, and it will be left in black peoples hands to decide.

I for one, as a white man...agree 100% that the word should not be used, but I would vote against banning the word. I feel that something like this to change, there has to be a social change that comes with it...or the deadening of this word needs to be the result of social change from within. It can't be forced on people with no say so in the matter...that will only be counterproductive. It will cause a mess if a black person is ticketed or arrested for using the word, and will cause a much larger racial divide if a white person is.

Worst case...put it up for the people to vote and let the people speak up.

Best case...government...MIND YA OWN BUSINESS and feed the poor, help the homeless...etc.

Next thing you know, our wives will be calling the police on us for pootin under the covers...and we'll actually get tickets for it!

I blame that on the parents. Parents are simply not being responsible for their kids and are not raising them properly. They are being raised by 106 & Park and all this other fuckery on television and radio.

Yes I am a parent and I monitor what my ten year old daughter listens to and watches on television. I don't allow her to watch certain cartoons that I think are not geared toward children. She has never watched an epsiode of the Simpsons, I don't allow her to drool over Chris Brown, Bow Wow and Pretty Ricky, I allow her to listen to Disney music, classical, techno (yeah its funny, but its beats with little to zero lyrics and the lyrics that are there mostly revolve around love and life) you HAVE TO BE A PARENT, you can't make excuses because you work and you gotta pay bills, shit I gotta work and pay bills to but I have a responsiblity to my child FIRST. I want to give my daughter a chance in this world and not have her corrupt thinking that wearing skimpy clothing and droppin it to the ground is appropriate behavior for a woman. Its about teaching these children self respect!

You can't shield your children from the troubles of the world, I keep it real with her, I let her see the good and bad, but focus on the good, I let her be a child, I let her enjoy her childhood, and remind her not to try to grow up too soon.

I won't even allow her to be friends with certain children who's parents don't really raise them. It may sound harsh but its called parenting. I can't control other peoples kids but I have the ultimate control at my house.

I took a look at the site, and it doesn't give too much. It does speak briefly on the things that he has shown support on...and they sound on track with me. Of course this doesn't show a voting record, but it is an unbiased site that is gonna speak briefly on the things he stands behind.

First off, I was living like a terd for most of that time and was simply too high or just didn' wanna fool with it.

FORTUNATELY I DID GET PAST THAT.

The reason I have not voted recently has been for good reason. Because I did not take the time or spend the energy, and apparently deep inside "did not care enough" to do an independent review of what the people running for office stood for.

I'm not gonna base my decision of who I vote for based on what the TV says. I really believe, and wish that we had an independent source of information which showed EXACTLY what the people running stood for and speaks on their past voting records and business relations.

I think it is better than an uninformed person NOT VOTE, than it is for them to go out and vote just based on political party, race or religion.

Wednesday night, Mutulu Olugabala, also known as M1, half of the tell-it-like-it-is politically aware group Dead Prez, spoke in front of a packed crowd in Duane G1B30.

Dead Prez's revolutionary agenda surrounded four main topics that would form the basis of its overall message: economic development, political education, not living in white privilege or arrogance and reparations given to the community.

"This is a white school with a tremendous amount of privilege and people need to fully comprehend their responsibilities," said Joanna Burrows, a recently graduated English literature major. "Underprivileged people don't even have the chance to be here and we need to understand that."

He began his crusade into radical political and social activism with an a cappella version of his politically driven song "Police State" and as the crowd burst into cheers, he delivered the message, "What I'm talking about is more than music, what we mean to do is be proactive."

Four of his comrades, all dressed in black, were members of the new Black Panther Organization. They stood stoically behind M1 as he described his evolution from a kid who wanted to get out of "the hood" and into a man who organized revolution.

"I'm not a rapper, if you sit here and look at me like a rapper then you missed the point. I'm an organizer, a father and I'm here to make a revolution," M1 said. "I'm looking in the eyes of everyone in this crowd for the next Che Guevara."

Born in Jamaica in 1973, raised in Brooklyn and educated at Florida A&M University, M1 has been a staple in the black power movement since the early 1990s. While at the university, his mother was jailed for conspiracy to sell drugs and his family was falling apart. He decided college wasn't his goal in life and he wanted to change the world.

"What I got from the campus was an excuse from reality, driving to dive head first into the petty bourgeoisie," M1 said. "It was a breeding ground for answers that aren't answered, conclusions without conclusions, a lesson in futility."

Soon thereafter he joined the African People's Social Party in Tallahassee, Fla. and began his slow evolution into one of the hardest-working revolutionary activists within his community. Following the beating of Rodney King, M1 travelled to Chicago to learn more about governmental injustice. While there, he learned the story of Fred Hampton, Sr., who was assassinated by the FBI in a pre-emptive strike to curb the black power movement. Hampton Sr. was the leader of the largest chapter of the Black Panther movement in history.

Shortly thereafter, he signed on to lead the campaign to save Fred Hampton Jr., son of Fred Hampton Sr., who was sentenced to 18 years in jail for allegedly throwing a firebomb into a Korean grocery store.

"Our motto at the time was, they took one Fred Hampton from us and they can't take another," M1 said. "You can kill a revolutionary but you can't kill a revolution."

As the Black Panthers movement grew larger, some would say they were the highest revolutionary trend the world has ever seen. This created unrest within the government and prompted the head of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover, to call the Black Panthers the highest threat to internal security in the United States.

"Hoover created the Counter Intelligence Program with the No. 1 initiative of stopping a black messiah that would rise up and electrify the black masses," M1 said. "This is where I got my revolutionary start, I'm the ball in the spray paint can, I mix it up."

According to M1, the initiative sent snitches into the Black Panther movement, threw people in jail and introduced Vietnamese heroin and crack into black neighborhoods.

"They militarily defeated the Black Panther movement," M1 said. "The same government that was fighting people in Vietnam was putting brothers in jail for longer than I've been alive."

After another round of applause, M1 broke into discussion about what he's known best for: hip-hop. He revealed his belief that hip-hop has become a code word for criminal, when its true purpose is to serve as the voice of the black working class.

"It's more than merely music," said Reiland Rabaka, professor of ethnic studies. "Rap is the soundtrack to hip-hop."

As his emotionally-driven speech came to an end, M1 called on the audience to step forward and take the future into their hands.

"Reparations mean us giving back to the community to revolutionize the movement," he said. "You gotta move a mountain to remove capitalism."

Once 50 drops and flops it'll be official. The funny thing about the 50 haters is that they don't even realize his fall will confirm what few know, some suspect and all fear. The ride that is rap is over.

Once the emphasis switched from music to gimmicks it was done. Rap is now nothing more than a marketing tool which is good news for the products that benefit but the record companies are hurting badly. It was the suits at the labels who sent the RIAA at mixtapes DJ's after condoning the mixtape game when it helped their cause.

Meanwhile these websites only expedite the process because their traffic relies on everything but the music making them no different from many of the people the bloggers criticize.

You're either part oof the problem or part of the solution and we all know what it is.

OK we all agree that the word is a blemish on our race, and we should wean ourselves off of it (it's going to take me some time to stop using it(if i stop using it)). but what are some other things that we should change about our race or community that will help refelect on what type of people we really are...

If a person’s true desire is to reach their full potential, and is willing to put forth any and all effort required to do so….the opportunity to reach it is there. Regardless of skin color, etc…there will be obstacles. Now naturally the obstacles will be different based on the factors brought in from those factors, and it will make the fight that much more tougher…but it also builds the character that much stronger and makes the victory that much sweeter.

Here is what I think. First off…it starts at home. If the home is raising a person up with the attitude of “this is what you are up against” and an attitude of resentment (although when based on history, it is understandable)…then the child grows up and inherits that attitude. So a lot of it begins in the home, and I know the argument of there not being a father in the home. But I guarantee you if these strong black women take a hold and keep a hold of their children and instill them values in them that nothing, no one or no circumstance or situation can hold them back, that will stick and show in their children as they come up. There is nothing stronger than a single black mother doing everything she can to set that example.

I’ve always said that we must be mindful of the past, and never try and downplay what happened and the implications on today’s society, but I also agree that the only way to ever grow is to not be held BACK by the mentality of someone just freed from slavery. I was discussing this with a coworker of mine, and she made a very valid point…that it was only one or two generations ago, so there are fresh wounds. And time heals wounds, but we also know that picking wounds prolong the suffering. When the Proclomation was signed, and slaves were freed by law, that did not mean freedom. Many did not even know they had been freed. Many others chose to stay with their master simply because their mindstate did not realize and understand what freedom meant. Being held down by other peoples perceptions and allowing someone else to place value on your worth FOR YOU…is mental slavery, and not only does it happen to black folks but it happens to battered women, poor people, etc. It is a mindstate that until we break that and realize that color has NOTHING to do with ANYTHING, and not use it as an offensive tool and a defensive response…THEN change will come naturally.

Here is a fact, the term “minority” means that in the overall population….there are not as many as there are others. I believe that while it is absolutetly necessary to understand and realize the events of the past, that it is just as necessary to accept each other, of all races…before any one race can see advancement. Especially being a minority. Looking at it as simple statistics show us that in order for the races to come to any level of equality, it will take help from the other races. Now all races have idiots, scum bags, and racists…but we gotta isolate those and let them fade out. When grandma or grandpa tries to teach you that the “white man” is the devil, or that blacks are nothing more than animals…then we just have to choose not to receive that lie. And we have to understand that when they came up…that was the mindstate and accept that we can not change the old timers. But we can grow from it and shake our heads at the ignorance and decide that we will have no part off it.

So with that said, it bothers me and I feel it hurts progression when we down a black person or call him an “Uncle Tom” when he is working side by side with a white man, and playing the same game that must be played for anyone to get to the top. It seems as though we are constantly talking about how we need more black business leaders and political leaders…but then when they step up and get there, we break them back down and accuse them of “selling out” when in fact, in most cases…it has taken a black man that is stronger than the average white man to get in that position because he has come up against and defeated odds that were not presented to the white man.

Last but certainly not least is, we need to live and believe as Christ did. That is in love for EVERYONE, with acceptance and agreeance that we are all equal in God’s eyes, and that two wrongs NEVER make a right (that’s why I wont’ knock out Mike).

- Stop calling and accepting the terms of “bitches” and “niggas” as acceptable amongst yourselves.

- Stop tearing each other down and rather lift each other up instead.

- Stop believing that ANYBODY can hold you back, or is to blame for anything in your life. Regardless of socio-economic realities…never settle for “that’s how it is” but rather strive that much harder and give everything your all and know that God has got your back.

- Believe in the dream…and take steps towards making it happen. Promote love, acceptance of all and decide to let racism die by not prolonging the slave mentality by instilling that attitude in your children that ultimately reality is and will forever be “whites versus blacks”.

You’re right Vic…it is hard to speak on these things being a white man, because naturally I feel defensive typing it…feeling as though I must justify what I’m sayin, just as I’m sure when some black folks read it they are gonna be defensive thinking “listen at this white boy”. The fact that those defenses exists are indiciation that there is still still work to be done, but being able to speak on them are indication that even being able to have these discussions and caring what each other really think is progress.

NOW…what do I think white people need to do? Be exactly the opposite of htownmike. Lol Naw…seriously though. Older white people have to accept that their mentalities and the ways of the old were WRONG. There is no justification for the mind state that one person is any less of a person simply because of skin tone. With that said, they must realize that you do not have to be afraid of black people. I think that really drives a lot of why white folks try and separate from black folks, discriminate in jobs, etc. They are scared of the black man and woman. That is why they hold their purse, etc.

So bottom line for white folks….stop bein so daggum scary of black folks and realize that times is changing whether you accept it or not, so you better change your mindstate. Reach out to people in need, whether they be black or white…and pitch in a hand to help. Show that you can be trusted, when you are in a position of power…afford the opportunity to other races that you would want for your own daughter or son.

You know what is interesting Vic….I am finding it more difficult to answer the “what should whites change” than I am the “what should blacks change”. I think it is because when I see and hear how black folks feel and what they go through, it is easier to understand why they feel a certain way, and what has created the issues. The wrongs done are just uncountable.

With white folks, it just makes me think of my grandma on my moms side. As racist as a racist could be (last I knew of her). And the only thing I can really think of when it comes to dealing with the issues she has, or what I would ask her when confronting her head up would just be…

“Why?”

It’s so unfathomable to me, I don’t even know what the real issues are to begin addressing. Other than “fear”.

Vic…what do you think that white folks could do to change the perceptions of them. And as you can see…I tried to deal in what the individual could do. And if individuals did that, collectively we would see change. What could white folks do.

Actually I tell you what I know. My landlord came to my apt. and said he'll give $10,000 for us to move out, and keeps callin everyday like $10,000 gonna really do something. Then once you agree to move and actually move out, There gonna take the apt fix it up, but not too much. Then rent for like 20-50% more, and all the people I know going thru this didn't get no dates they just moved and it wasn't even like 3 to 6 months.

The government needs to crack down on drugs running rampant in the community and they need to provide more programs that offer education and training for the underpriviledged (adults and children) so that people can be self sufficient. Fuck that. If I have to get up and go to work every day, other people should to. If I have to pay an astronomical amount of money for rent every month, others should to. Fuck that. I'm gonna try to take on your question. Gentrification is creating some beautiful neighborhoods. The problem is the housing that is created is too expensive for average working folks let alone the poor people that are being forced out. They can get rid of the slums by building affordable housing for working people not just rich people.

Due to my fascination with black Detroit organized crime and the fact that I lived in Inkster for a couple of years and visited a couple of years ago, I know how decayed Detroit is. It is so bad that white folks don't even want to build there (for now). It is a city on a lake and eventually they will kick the black people out and take advantage of that prime real estate. But they won't do that until commerce is brought back to the city. There aren't enough jobs there for the rich folks to make it worth it just yet.

The government needs to crack down on drugs running rampant in the community and they need to provide more programs that offer education and training for the underpriviledged (adults and children) so that people can be self sufficient. Fuck that. If I have to get up and go to work every day, other people should to. If I have to pay an astronomical amount of money for rent every month, others should to. Fuck that. People need to be accountable for themselves and be able to stand on their own fucking ten toes.

That has not been the case in my town in Jersey (Long Branch) or another closeby beach town (Asbury). Individuals aren't buying houses in delapidated neighborhoods. They would be scared to death. Developers are forcing out property owners under eminent domain. They don't buy one house, they buy the whole neighborhood whether the owner wants to sell or not. Then they rebuild it with million dollar homes that the previous owners, even white ones, that people can't afford.

White people from my town have been fighting it for years. If you you are a regula working stiff with a house on the beach that you have lived in for years, you are assed out. You gotta go. The developers need their cash.

The government in general needs to prioritze their budget down to the T. So much money is WASTED. Money isnt going in the right places. Government workers are overpaid (Trust me I was one), Defense budget is misused and unaccounted for. I know you all heard of the billions of dollars(packed in tons) that was shipped overseas that was LOST!!!

Maybe a black person moved in and all the white folks left. Now the virtually the whole neighborhood is section 8. You have these big beautiful brick homes with the screens haning off the windows, no grass in the yard and drug dealers as far as the eye can see. These people were given nice homes for extremely low rent and they don't even appreciate. I imagine it will be another millenium before the ghetto mentality is eliminated if ever.

That's the problem...I've been working my ass off since I was 13...I have a couple friends who have never worked but sit on they ass everyday getting, child support, social security, and food stamps (then the bitches wanna act funny with selling them), lol, anyway it's hard for me to help people living a certain way when I know they have the physical ability to work just like I do but sit on they ass all day and get shit passed to them b/c people feel sorry for them living in the ghetto with kids...

If your selling drugs or involved with illegal activity, or if you choose to create a situation for yourself that maybe detrimental, you get what you ask for. She jacked around and didn't get the test on the baby until almost two months later, then we had to wait on the court date...and when it was all said and done, they made me pay retro back to the date of birth!!!

I said if this nit wit, and the system would'n't have been playin games...I woulda known for a fact he was mine and you better believe I woulda been handling mine.

its like george Bush makin that law about medcare beneficiarys have to have drug cov which cost a pretty penny even if u dont take drugs and now that he set it up that way he also stop medicare from providing the drug cov, so now instead of all that money going back to the gov it goes to drug insurance companies and the gov got stock invetsted in those plans, and these plans have enrollment periods so if ur outside and need drugs then too bad ur fucked!

No Child Left Behind is an act implemented to benefit pre-collegiate students, not adults seeking higher education.

I feel the university should be providing some sort of assistance with books, housing, etc., not the government.

I mean I am all for scholarships, grants and the like, but I just don't see why its my responsiblity as a tax payer to pay for your books, anymore than its my responsiblity to pay for the people who live on Section 8's rent.

We need to be self sufficient and we need to be raising our children the same way. Don't look to the government to take care of you in any shape, form or fashion.

Just like we can't depend on Social Security being around when we're older, better start stackin bread in that Roth IRA and 401K so you'll have something later in life.

Parents decide to have children. It is their responsiblity to take care of them. In my opinion, that includes their college education. Sorry, thats my opinion.

My question to them was has Algebra fucking changed in the last 2 years? I kid you not I have not been back to school since that happened it pissed me off so bad.

If the bills are paid, the child is eating, the child has clothes on their back and all school needs are met it is not necessary for the mom to take their child support check and spend it on the kids. I doubt it...I've heard the same old song many times from her. It's all good for a short period, she was calling daily as she brought this againsts me....now that she sees it ain't gonna be as easy as she was thinkin, she never calls.

She lives in GA, I live in TX. She didn't start this mess until it was time for her to start paying child support and when visitation had to be cut back because he started Kindergarten.

Trust me...I'm all about my child and what is best for him. We even had the divorce papers drawn up (she filed on me) and I agreed, that until kindergarten he would be back and forth visiting every two months and she would not have to pay child support.

But like I said...it was all good until that support becomes an issue.

You gotta understand I'm on both sides of the fence, because I have a son with a different woman that she has custody of and lives in FL. This is the one about the DNA tests I was mentioning. I'm all about what's best for him, he's being tested for austism now...so I understand that me pushing a "visitation" issue would be selfish and not in his best interest.

Personally for those of us who have jobs you can really get fk'd by court system cause their math doesn't always take into account your ability to survive. Not only that and this varies but the amount of time u spend with your kid compared to support you provide can be completely bullsht.
If your the type that really wants to spend time with ur child. The court system can really fk your sht up good.

And also, I do understand how child support should function. I have a step son who we receive child support for, and understand and definetly realize that the money his dad sends is figured into our monthly budget on which we buy the groceries that everyone eats, pays the car insurance everyone rides to and puts the roof over everyones head.

It is for the "support" of the child, not to be spent mindlessly on the child just to say "I spent all the money on Xavier."

I'm on all sides of the parenting fence, as well as the child support fence, and can tell you...the system needs help.

You are right about No Child Left Behind it is not geared towards people attending college but that program was not implemented either. It was a political tact used for election. What about the money that was promised to me in high school that was not there when I needed it for books? Im a taxpayer also and would rather have my money spent on education than frivolously spent on a dwindling defense budget that led us nowhere. I bought a 250 textbook that I sold back the same semester and was given $15. It was new editioned. How is this not capitilization? I would much rather support and pay for post education than war, welfare, section 8 etc..

Right on homey, every man that has an issue with the child support system does not simply have those issues because we are bitter and all that.

I co-sign EVERYTHING you said homeboy...all of it. The child support definetly does not figure in all of your expenses.

For one, I believe they would be better off coming up with a formula which is based on the expenses of the child, NOT the income of the parent. That is why you have these clowns out there only paying $75 a month. Child support being one of the main reasons they do not want to go get a job..or a legal one for that matter. Because they will figure it to determine how much child support would be...so the dude does everything in his power NOT TO have reportable income.

They need to determine the child support based on an average means or cost for raising that child and the expenses involved. Naturally, the electric, groceries, and other miscelleneous bills the mother may have would be a factor in that too...but there would be a guideline...a table of sorts to determine the child support.

That is one way it could be improved, and I may not have worded it like I mean it...but I'm kinda rushin this post. Ya'll feel what I'm sayin?

Girl...I can feel his pain. I got 4 baby mommas, and two of them live with me. One baby momma is GA, and I have custody. Another baby momma is in GA and she has custody, and I have a baby momma in FL and she has custody.

It's a huge stressor, but you know what? We make our beds...we lie in it. And while it is a crazy situation...and I may not get to see my babies as often as I like, I do all I can and smile just knowin they are out there happy. I love my kids and wouldn't trade any part of the crazy life I've created.

I commend you on being responsible but I have my disagreements. When women take care of their children it is a norm, nothing to be praised for or rewarded but when men do they expect to be worshipped. Im not saying you but in general.

Do you suggest that if a woman is financially able to take care of her child's needs, no support from the father is necessary? Some men who never had full custody dont know about the little expenses that add up. Things child support doesnt cover. Last time I checked if she wasnt artificially insemenated she didnt concieve by herself. Same goes with women. If the father has custody the mother should pay child support too. Either way both parties should come out the pocket. If the other doesnt take care of the child take that shit to family court then you should be fighting for custody not cash. If mother/father does take good care of the child and their living arrangements and your money is used on stupid shit consider your money being reimbursed to them.

That child support system is totally bias. Why the focus ain't strictly on the children. When child support is enforced why it's a felony when you miss 4 months of support and they don't care about if you physically support the child.
