Davey D: "Why Commerce is Killing the True Spirit of Hip-hop."

Someone told me that my relentless lashing and finger-pointing suggests that I am, in some way, trying to save hip-hop. But no matter who it is I accuse of ruining the art, and no matter how many times, the facts still remain: payola, capitalists, greed. At this point, one's opinion of who is killing hip-hop are only words that last long enough to go through one ear and out the other; the powers that be have become way too strong.
So now, Davey D, the infamous hip-hop journalist who's been doing this for a long time, gives us some commentary with this article, "Why Commerce is Killing the True Spirit of Hip-hop." And for those who might not be familiar, this is the dude that spit his knowledge on "BEEF I" (and other hip-hop documentaries as well). Check it out:
"Hip-hop icon Nas made the provocative statement, "Hip-hop is dead,'' in September and set off a firestorm of controversy. It was intensified by the [December] release of his album bearing the same title.
"Many questioned why Nas would say hip-hop -- a worldwide phenomenon that has generated billions of dollars -- could be "dead.'' After all, more hip-hop albums are being released then ever before, and the music's influence extends to movies, corporate marketing and theater. That it's dead seems absurd -- until you realize Nas was looking beneath the surface.
"He was speaking of the corporate side of the music and the mentality of executives more interested in turning a quick buck than nurturing rap culture. Nas realized sex, violence and bling, as themes for the music, had pretty much run their course. Album sales had plummeted, and ratings at hip-hop radio stations in New York, Los Angeles and elsewhere had hit all-time lows."If desired, continue reading here...

Honestly I'm sick and tired of OLD BITTER JEALOUS rappers and OLD "BACK IN MY DAY" people talking about hip hop is dead. The fact of the matter is that even from day 1 in hip hop it was about making money and having cheesy party songs.
The Sugar Hill Gang was the perfect example of that. All they talked about in their song was having a color tv and a Cadillac and shit. Then you have people like KRS-1 saying this but his own albums talked about killing, money and drugs. HIS DAMN ALBUM COVERS HAD THAT STUFF ON IT. Nas is the same way.
Basically ALL of the old artist talking about how hip hop has changed are BITTER that rappers can make more money off of 1 hot single then they did in their entire careers. Rappers are millionaires now a days and those rappers are POOR. They had to get a 9-5 once their careers ended or were forced to do publicity stunts and degrade themselves. If you research a lot of their interviews you see most of them say that THEY SHOULD BE COMPENSATED FOR STARTING HIP HOP. COMPENSATED AS IN MONEY FROM CURRENT RAPPERS.
The fans who hate on the state of current hip hop are usually older people in their 30s or higher who no matter what will say "in my day" this or that was better. Whether it's the original Nintendo compared to the Xbox, basketball, cars or whatever. THIS IS HOW THE WORLD WORKS. Every generation hates on the current generation especially in music. Just like some of your parents hate rap they forget to tell you that their parents hated Michael Jackson and Elvis and shit.
Oh and a lot of the radio personalities were ex rappers and/or friends with ex rappers so they hate too. Nas says hip hop is dead because he doesn't sell anymore. If he sold 3 million records he would have never said that.

I'm 34. I remember when rap didn't play on the radio (I'm from NJ) I really respect todays rappers for their hustle and everything, really I do. I think the south movement is alot like the hip hop of the early 80's. I think this whole thing is about respect. You have to respect your elders - now I didn't say like - RESPECT. And I think overall that is the problem. And to be fair, you're right, alot of the veteren rappers are bitter, but just like your grandparents - RIGHT OR WRONG - we need to respect them. I do believe that hip hop is dead. NOT HIP HOP MUSIC - HIP HOP AS A WHOLE. GRAFFITI IS DEAD, BBOYING IS DEAD, REAL DJING IS KINDA STILL AROUND, BUT HIP HOP MUSIC IS NOT DEAD. Now, saying that, I think yes, you're right about the content being the same as the early hip hop music is the same as today but to me, there is just no real content in music like how it grew to be in the late 80's early to mid 90's. I guess the music is going in full circle and the ocntent is ocming back. TO BE HONEST, THESE RAPPERS TODAY WILL NOT LAST - JUST LIKE THE OLDER RAPPERS, THEY WILL HAVE THERE RUN AND IF YOUR 18-26 RIGHT NOW, WHEN YOU LIVE TO BE 34-35 (IF YOU MAKE IT) YOU WILL UNDERSTAND AND YOU WILL BE HATED AND NOT RESPECTED BY THE YOUNGER PEOPLE.

Well, hip hop is dead; to a degree. I'm in my 30's, but i can appreciate good rap if its old school or new school. its all about if its hot or not. I think too many people get their panties in a bunch. Nas appreciates good hip-hop. whether its old or new. but everything that is out now is not hot! Just cause you have a few south artists that are "like that" as far as tracks, that don't neccessarily mean everybody from the south is hot. LOL. Laffy taffy is a joke. But i like outkast though. I can't get with UNK, but I can fool with TI. Thats all i'm saying. everything ain't bad, but most of the stuff coming out is straight garbage.
To be real, I hope hip hop music does die and morph into something else - something better. With the exception of Papoose and Saigon, and maybe T.I., I'm not looking forward to any hip hop music - and to be real, I can't remember the last hip hop album I bought - oh wait I can, Kanye West's last one and I am looking forward to his album as well.

I just read an article from AP news on Aol that surmised the same thing. Stephen Hill of BET refused Little Brother and De La Soul airplay because he said it was too intelligent. You get Jeezy and Joc, but not a lot of Lupe and Nas. There is no more art in mainstream hip hop. Its the same thing mainstream culture did to jazz when they Kenny g'd it. Corporate America now owns hip hop. Something that had never been on a major label until into the 90's. Thats when the decline began. Its like turning the local bodega into Walmart. Bigger store, bigger selection, maybe even cheaper prices, but somehow you still lose something.
Hip Hop is not dead just because a "majority" of artists in some peoples eyes aren't any good. In 1988 was every rapper out good? Hell no but there was never any arguments like this. The fact is everybody likes different rappers or there would only be 5 on Earth. Perfect example is "so called" legends in Jay-Z and Nas.
Before they truced half of the planet hated them and half loved them. Does that make 50% of the fans wrong? No so people need to realize your personal opinion of what is good music isn't somebody elses or the rapper won't sell.
Anyway Flame the reason why those other genres died is because something came along to replace it each time (disco > blues > rocc > hip hop). Until a new genre is formed hip hop will live.
Some folks are just idiots and dont pay attention. Nas was saying hip hop is dead not because all the artists suck, but because it is too commercialized! When you listen to radio and it only plays certain "pop-sounding songs" that is a problem. ALL types of hip hop should be played, underground,popular, etc. Some idiots try to think he was shitting on the south but he NEVER EVER said such!. The man grew up off hip hop and loes the art form, but sees the people who created it not benefitting from it. The companies are making more than the artist! And thats not right.

all im going to say is; What if Hip Hop would have evolved into the same type of music that Outkast are doing? I mean go back and listen to all of thier music and albums and notice how they were creative everytime they drop, and they were actually time traveling with thier music. Remember when Pac dissed both of them they weren't even a factor in Hip Hop (well in the south where i grew up, they werent getting no play, i cant speak for New York), although in those times i was a huge Nas fan, cause he was dropping albums like "I am" but then when Pac & Big died they rode thier dick so hard, well not Nas that much, but Jay-z (so called legend) owes majority of his success on Biggie's success.

Look at what's happening with record sales. It used to be you were as good as your last album. Now you're as good as your last single. That is EXACTLY the way it was in the early 80's so it definitly is going full circle. But the quality in hip hop music as a whole sucks. Whether Hip Hop is dead or not is up for debate. But the current state of Hip Hop isn't. Crack rap, hoes, and money money money isn't creative. Its been approached from every angle. Like in life, the lack of progress will inevitably lead to death. Jeezy Thug 101 is no different from his latest CD. At least show growth. If this is growth Laffy Taffy or Dem Franchise Boys or whoever then maybe Hip Hop isn't dead, but I want a divorce.

To be honest the main problem is there's no balance in radio and tv airplay. Everybody has their style preference and what the industry fails to realize is that there's also money in variety, and that's what's gonna kill hip hop,the lack thereof. That's what killed Disco all of it sounded the same after a while and hip hop has been the most diverse of any music genre there's room for everybody even Cowboy Troy lol, but PD's are just feeding the same regurgitated music alienating the true fans that used to buy 12"s just to be the first to have the latest joints and hardly ever make a bad pick, not to mention hardly any cover art just label and title peeking through the center of the sleeve. Now we gotta go on 60 million cities for promo.

For real. Everytime I go to the bathroom....I'm standing there starin at dried up boogers as I'm takin a leak. And I'm thinkin...."it had to be one of these old men that did that". And these folks, are military leaders...I'm talking Lt. Col and above. And the civilians are all GS-11 and above (that's high ranking for ya'll that don't know goverment grading).
Is this the only place that happens? Ya'll be wipin boogers on the walls?

Is religion my life? No. Is Jesus, and trying to walk that walk something I am focused on every day? Yes.
See...you don't understand what I'm sayin. I come on this blog simply to show people that there is more to life than hip hop. I don' even listen to the garbage anymore. I listen to Christian Hip Hop that preaches truth and impacts lives in a positive way.
What else do I do? First off, I have a family. My life revolves around doin Gods will, and taking care of my family. We do grown up family type things.
Do I talk real issues with people around me? Believe that...I don't just talk it, I exercise the talk. This blog is what I do at work when it's dead. Honestly, I shouldn't be on here as much as I am that is true. But apart from work, I am not on here. I may check back if I am hoping for an answer.
I have a wonderful life. See...when you grown and doing grown up things, excitement is different. I don't go to clubs, I don't hang out with gangs of friends and listen to hip hop music. I have a homeboy that has a studio, we pound out tracks on occassion, but having a family and being co-founder of a ministry is time consuming.
Why am I so adamant about "real issues"? Because for 24+ years, I lived the life of someone like a fool and hurt alot of people and destroyed alot of lives. I guess you could say I feel a sense of responsibility to try and make up for everything I've done. I won't get into it all...if you're itnerested I got a blog up on my page that touches on my testimony.
Again, it goes back to responsibility. I have taken responsibility for how I used to live and the negative influence I made on the world, now I try and make a difference.
I do just kick back and watch TV, chill out, and all that too. I just get frustrated too and these grown ass people being phony and talking about those same kind of things I mentioned in my previous post to you.
People need to be about it. And you right, some people deal with real life issues on a regular and try and make change, but not none of these zombies.
You are one of the youngest, yet realest people on the whole blog. That speaks volumes.

i'm tired of the hip hop is dead shit. hip hop been around for at least 30 years and will be around for many more. their is so much diversity in the music that it will never die. every region has their own style. r&b is lame as hell cause they only talk about one thing and that's the reason hip hop is bigger than r&b or any other genre because you can come from so many different angles, beats-wise and lyric-wise and still be hip hop. in hip hop you can go from the black eyed peas to some hyphy, down south, to 50 cent, or be on some militant shit like dem dudes who made dat song "hip hop" a while back (i can't think of their name right now), all are totally different and i could add more. jaimie foxx, usher, mh, omarion, tyrese and any other r&b artist are all the same, singing about the samething. r&b doesn't have anywhere near the amount of weekly releases as hip hop. so before hip hop is dead many other genres will be dead. rock is dead or at least that big hair heavy metal shit. there is more hip hop than rock on mtv. if r&b hadn't adapted to the hip hop sound, r&b would already be dead. you can barely find and r&b album without some hip hop on it.

I feel this way on hip hop..im 24 n i was listenin in the late 80's early 90's and the themes have always been the same. there were dance songs back then "Doin the butt" "whoop there it is" "tootsie roll" etc. and there was flashy rappers that talked about money and women and the gangsta rappers and the political rappers. The same shit is out today the exception is that every form of hip hop music is not getting its proper shine. when's the last time an artist like Mos Def got a video or a single on the radio? Its 2 much 1 sideness with the music in the mainstream there will neva be another public enemy type group on a national level.
