SOHH already published an article on the "anti-payola" settlement that was made between the government and the four major broadcast companies, CBS Radio, Entercom Communications, Clear Channel Communications, and Citadel Broadcasting. This "settlement" --which says that 8,400 half-hour segments of free airtime will be given to underground artists and artists signed to indie labels--is in favor of indie labels not controlled by the biggest music outlets. These four outlets are Warner, Universal, Sony BMG, and EMI, all of which have been caught in payola scandals and have agreed to pay $12.5 million in fines to put a stop to further investigation.
I don't listen to daytime radio because the variety is nonexistent. Will I be able to turn on Hot 97 at 10am and hear a wider playlist? No. So what was the point of this? All they're going to do is cram more indie and underground up-and-comers in the later hours. Do they really think all of these stations nationwide are going to stop accepting money to keep these wack records on repeat? No. How did Kanye's version of "Throw Some Ds" suddenly become more heavy on the rotation than Richboy's? Not that I give a flying fuck about Richboy, but still... the question arises.

yeah reckless i agree with you. I dont listen to the radio to much either. You go from hot 97 to 105.1 and will probably hear the same song at same time. So should quality artist like nas or common just put out that money? I mean nas' new single aint getting no play. But if he put that money out there he might re awaken the hip hop community.

Maybe its not a matter of kanye paying for it to get played or his company paying for it. maybe its being played simply because its Kanye, case & point. It isn't enough to just say that these stations are going to promote more indie artists. A lot of the payola happens under the table, out of the knowings of music directors and programmers. What I feel needs to happen is that some of these DJs need to be rotated around in the major markets. True, Flex brings in the listeners... but you wouldn't imagine the amount of money that comes along with that. Just for him to drop a bomb on a song means that the song will potentially rise to the top of urban radio playlists within a matter of weeks. That speaks volumes IMO.
As someone who comes from a broadcasting background, I will say that today, Reckless, you've hit this issue right on the head in your opinion wrap. Anyhow. I'm out this bitch. Just thought I'd drop a line about the issue.

I don't fuck with the radio 2 much either, unless I'm in my car, and even then, I only listen 2 the old school R&B or Jazz stations, good thing I copped my ipod when I did, radio blows goat.

They still do! A lot of new artists come through major markets to do interviews. But make no mistake, a lot of these On Air personalities will accept money just for a sit-down.
I haven't completely boycotted radio, but I will say that I only listen to particular shows. The more syndicated ones like Steve Harvey in the Morning, etc. But like you, I take that Ipod everywhere!

Isnt Rap-A-Lot the label out of TX? So wouldnt good business logic for the radio in Houston to stick with their long term investment rather then accepting money for spins from an artists out side of that region?

But to answer your question, when it comes to media, the whole country looks to see what's going on in NY. Whether it is involving what is playing, or what the newscasters are wearing. That is simply how it is. NY artists will go elsewhere for radio play, but I don't believe any money will be shuffled in that station's direction. I haven't heard anything behind the scenes really, of artists running out to Texas or Cali and paying to get their ish on the playlists. Not to stick my chest out on it, but that just seems unheard of. One of the most expensive markets to get commericial time is NYC.

Payola is engrained in the culture of radio, it's not going to stop as long as labels are offering money to DJ's and station programmers. How do ya'll think Flex buys all them cars and shit, DJ ain't that damn profitable. But payola is a reason why hip hop is declining in the creativity aspect, but when greed comes before love and respect for the culture what do you expect?
There are a few DJ's in NYC that hold it down on the radio, my personal favorite is DJ Carmelo. But after 11 pm is the best time to turn on the radio if you want to hear some good music, before that all u going to hear is "Walk it Out" 30 damn times.

i have a label, and i went to some of the behind the scene people and got exposed to some real slimy practices.
all i can tell u is, its a cut throat business and its not just music. i couldve made a whole album about some of these dudes - but that wouldnt be in my best interests.

It's hard to say who started what with the car culture, the only reason dudes were drivin Ol' Schools were they are fly and two they don't cost much to fix up and plus they couldn't afford that new whip or wanted to stay on the low. I think this is a stan, but I'll address it either way.
Civilization began in the middle east. Races evolved from Moses' three sons. If you research the meanings of each of their names, you will learn that they translate into the colors "black, brown and white".

I have never in my life read, heard or been taught that about the earliest of early civilizations barbarian white folks and African's being more civilized. I say that just to say I've never heard it at school or church, but if someone can point me to historical evidence, etc....I'd love to read up on it.

I know you don't realize this Bobby, that's why I'm sharin it with you..but when you equate Dre's belief to NOI, you are insulting the Nation. He don't believe what the nation believes.

The bible dates the earth to be between 5,000 and 6,000 years old. And Noah goes back farther than that.

HOW DID THIS TURN INTO A RELIGION CONVERSATION?
A NEW YORK RHYME STORY
In 2001, there was a war going on in New York City. Some of the most notorious reputed rhyme families were at each other throats over money, power, and respect. At the center of all the drama was Shawn Carter, a.k.a. Jay-Z, Jigga, H.O.V.A., the undisputed kingpin of the Rocafella rhyme family. The Roc sat at the head of all rhyme families in New York, and it appeared that this power and fame had gone to the head of Jay-Z, who constantly flaunted his riches and flamboyant style in the faces of his counterparts. This had upset a lot of families, some much older than the Roc, who felt that the "oath" by which all families must operate by had been violated. So a sit down was held with some of the top rhyme families to discuss the business of Hip Hop in New York. In attendance was Nas, a.k.a. Escobar and his Queens Bridge Family, Prodigy and his Mobb Deep Family also representing from Queens Bridge, Jadakiss, the Lox, and the all powerful Ruff Ryder family under the strict orders of DMX. Also present was Fat Joe, the Don, and head of the Terror Squad family representing the Bronx. I'm sure there were other families present, but these sit downs are always conducted in complete secrecy, especially if a "hit" was about to be ordered. The subject undoubtedly, was about Jay-Z, the illest lyricist to rule New York since the legend himself, The Notorious B.I.G.
It appeared that no one could stop Jay-Z. He didn't honor the "oath" which required every family to allow every other family a chance to eat, he flooded the streets with so much dope product that other families began to take a loss, and he ruled with an iron mike, orchestrating "hit" after "hit" after "hit." The families felt this was too much power for one man to have and he had to be stopped. Yet, it wasn't always this good for Jay-Z; he began pushing his product on the streets in early 96. He started from the bottom and quickly rose to the top, but it wasn't easy. The top spot at that time was held by the Bad Boy Family, headed of course by his long time friend B.I.G. a.k.a. Biggie Smalls. They would often talk about joining forces and building a family so strong, that no one would be able to destroy their empire. This family would be called, "The Commission." However, the Bad Boy family at the time was engrossed in a vicious war with a West Coast family called Death Row, so those dreams of merging families would have to be put on hold until order was restored in New York.
In the meantime, Jay kept moving his product in the streets (Reasonable Doubt) and was quickly gaining a reputation for having the raw shit. All he needed now was a break, an opportunity to show the whole world of Hip Hop that, not only did he belong amongst the elite, but also that he was the elite. That break would come when his long time friend and future partner B.I.G. lost his life after the ultimate "oath" of the families was broken, which was when the war he was engaged in with Death Row came off of wax and spilled into the streets. It was retaliation for the rubout of Death Row's capo Tupac Shakur six months earlier. One man's loss is another man's gain, and while the rubout of these two capos sent shockwaves through all rhyme families from the East Coast to the West Coast, Jay-Z saw it as the perfect time to make his move.
Before the New York syndicate could hold a sit down to discuss who would be the heir to the throne as King of New York, Jay had other plans and dropped some new product on the streets proclaiming "The City Is Mine" (Vol. 1). This infuriated the syndicate and the war was on. Jay knew he would have his hands full warring with some of New York's most diabolical rhyme lords, and he needed help to ensure that the "Roc" would never crumble. So he hired a young thug named Memphis Bleek to help defend the throne so many felt he had stolen. Jay and Memphis grew up in the same hood together. He was a little wild, but Jigga knew he could trust him, and Memphis would bust his lyrical guns if Jigga gave the order.
Nas struck first with "We Will Survive," off the I Am Album in a tribute to Biggie and Tupac, indirectly dissin Jay for trying to claim the vacant spot left by the legend and indicated that no one, especially Jay-Z was worthy of that title. Yet, by the time Jay-Z's next shipment hit the streets, ("Hard knock Life") it was so potent, he demanded all other families to address him as "H.O.V.A.," the godfather of organized rhyme. No matter who was firing the shots from the Lox to Mobb Deep, Jay always wore his vest and was able to escape without harm. As Jay predicted on his earlier product, "The Streets Is Watchin" and when the street thugs began to validate his power, it was a "rap," he was officially named "King of New York." This didn't stop Jay-Z from signing a Philly gangster named Beanie "Mac" Sigel to carry out more "hits" and to further strengthen the Roc for the future battles to come. He also signed a hood fella named Clue, who was his main connection to the streets. Anytime he had some new dope product that needed to be tested, Clue was always the first to get it and hit the customers with samples.
The Roc was stronger than ever, but Biggie bestowed some valuable wisdom on Jay before his untimely death. He told him "mo money, mo problems," and Jigga was beginning to witness this for himself. It seemed like the more money and fame he achieved, the more his enemies came at him. It's the nature of the business when you're on top, but how much could one man take before striking back? Jigga was untouchable and even though members of his cartel went to war (Beanie vs. Jadakiss, Memphis threw a few jabs at Nas), he was above all of that. By calling himself "H.O.V.A." he was indirectly telling his enemies, "I am a lyrical God," you are all below me and you are not even worth any of my time. He stated, "For playin me y'all shall forever remain nameless," which rendered his enemies even more powerless, because without mentioning names, they couldn't capitalize on the publicity. This was brilliant. He also stated, "It’s not real to me therefore he doesn't exist, so poof, vamoose son of a bitch." By not even acknowledging that beef existed, he could not be harmed by his enemies. Jay was winning the mind war, but his henchmen couldn't keep the syndicate from coming at the Roc. He knew he would have to finish the job himself, but this would prove to be a crucial mistake. When his hottest product to date hit the streets in 2001 called, "The Blueprint," he gave his enemies "names" and showed that they did "exist." Now they had the life and energy needed to take down the Roc. He aimed his lyrical Uzi at Prodigy from Mobb Deep on a "hit" called "The Takeover," hitting him at point blank range in the reputation department, even providing pictures of Prodigy as a ballerina, far from the image of a thug he claimed to be. This left Prodigy's rep bleeding profusely, but Jigga was not done yet. Without even reloading, he sprayed Nas with a rhyme barrage so fierce; most people thought they were witnessing the end of his career. Even if Nas wasn't dead, Jay left one in the chamber by saying, "you know who did you know what with you know who, let's keep that between me and you," making reference to a sexual encounter he had with Nas's ex-girlfriend and baby's mother. Nas and Prodigy were left for dead.
There have been many rub outs in the history of organized rhyme. Kool Moe Dee rubbed out Busy Bee, The Force Emcee’s ambushed the Cold Crush Brothers with a sneak attack, KRS One wiped out the entire Queens Bridge organization in the 80's, and LL Cool J murdered too many to mention. However, this rubout seemed like it would go down in history as the greatest ever. Jay thought it was over, but what he didn't know was that the New York syndicate put a "hit" out on the Roc and it would be carried out by Nas when he dropped, "The Ether" bomb. A lyrical cosmic explosion aimed at the soul of Jay-Z. It was so lethal it left the entire Roc running for cover. They never anticipated being "hit" from a cosmic level. By naming his shot "The Ether" Nas aligned himself spiritually with the heavens, his ancestors, and all the fallen rhyme lords before him, a force too powerful even for Jay-Z to overcome. By the time he reached for his weapon to release that last shot in his chamber, "Super Ugly," it was too weak to even reach Nas. "The Streets Is Watchin," and when the verdict came in from the hood, Nas was the winner hands down. This was a well organized "hit" planned months in advance, with many families playing a major role.
From Jadakiss blasting off at Beanie to weaken the Roc's foundation, to the "Don" Fat Joe releasing a blast called, "The King of New York," sending a clear message to the Roc that The Terror Squad was ready for war. The Lox went underground (freestyle) courtesy of the drama King Kay Slay, spitting some heavy fire in the Roc's direction. And what role did Eminem play? Did he infiltrate the Roc to gain Jay-Z's trust, and then convince Jay to let him flow on the "The Blueprint" on a track that he produced? Obviously mastering his flow and setting Jay-Z up to take a fall on his only "classic" album. Was this an indication that the time was right for the syndicate to make its move? Or was this done by Eminem to show the world that a white boy can take out our very best EMCEE? Or to let other future white kingpins know that the time was right for them to make their move and take over this entire Hip Hop Empire the way they took over Jazz and Rock and Roll? If this is the case, then the Roc was in trouble. Jigga may have sense that the end was near, as the internal beef took its toll and his once tight knit crew was dismantled. But he also knew that if he was going down, he was going down guns blazing, so he tried to sign the most ruthless underground group in New York, M.O.P. and linked up with some more Philly thugs named the Young guns to try and strengthen the new Roc. It’s too early to tell, but we could very well be witnessing the rise and fall of the Roc forever.
I started this story by saying there's a war going on. It's more than just a rhyme war, or a mind war. It's also a spiritual vs. a material war with many other factors involved. Everyone knows that rhyme pays including the "Government." So when they couldn't shut it down in the early days because of its high demand, they made sure they got paid a very high percentage before the product even hit the streets. Yet even this wasn't enough. The government wanted to control the type of product that hit the streets more than anything else. The earlier rhyme families always gave the streets something uplifting, motivating, educational, conscious, or spiritual. This presented a problem for the government. They didn't want product that freed the minds of the young hitting the streets. This kind of product was considered dangerous and something had to be done. So positive rap was destroyed, and in came gangsta rap, followed by the playas, pimps, hoes, hustlers, and thugs. From 1991 except for Nas illmatic (5 mics, the source - April 94) and DMX, the only product that would sell on the streets was about sex, murder, and material possessions, (Emcees like Common, Dead Prez, and Talib Kweli were doing the work, but weren’t getting the exposure). This type of rhyme reached its apex in 2001 with the release of Jay-Z's The Blueprint (5 mics, The Source - December 2001), and reemerged at the top of the charts with Get “Rich or Die Trying†released by 50 Cent in 2003. Both of these albums had their enlightening moments, but Jigga and 50 are the ones who reaped the most benefits of the playas, hoes, get money era, but this cycle has ended, and positive rap is about to make its return. There's nothing anyone can do about it, not even the government. Because it's an "ethereal" energy that automatically awakens the souls of Kings and Queens. Our ancestors always looked towards the heavens for signs of change, and when Nas dropped "The Ether," which means the upper regions of space, I knew the time for change in Hip Hop was upon us. Since then, more and more conscious Emcees are getting airplay. During that war, Nas represented the spiritual and Jay-Z represented the material. Myth #1
Homosexuality is normal and biologically determined.
The truth...
There is no scientific research indicating a biological or genetic cause for homosexuality. Biological factors may play a role in the predisposition to homosexuality. However, this is true of many other psychological conditions.
Research suggests that social and psychological factors are strongly influential. Examples include problems in early family relationships, sexual seduction, and sense of inadequacy with same-sex peers, with resulting disturbance in gender identity. Society can also influence a sexually questioning youth when it encourages gay self-labeling.
Myth #2
Homosexuals cannot change, and if they try, they will suffer great emotional distress and become suicidal. Therefore, treatment to change homosexuality must be stopped.
The truth...
Psychotherapists around the world who treat homosexuals report that significant numbers of their clients have experienced substantial healing. Change has come through psychological therapy, spirituality, and ex-gay support groups. Whether leading married or committed celibate lives, many report that their homosexual feelings have diminished greatly, and do not trouble them as much as they had in the past.
The keys to change are desire, persistence, and a willingness to investigate the conscious and unconscious conflicts from which the condition originated. Change comes slowly, usually over several years. Clients learn how to meet their needs for same-sex nurturance and affirmation without eroticizing the relationship. As they grow into their heterosexual potential, men and women typically experience a deeper and fuller sense of themselves as male or female.
If some homosexuals do not wish to change, that is their choice, yet it is profoundly sad that gay-rights activists struggle against the right-to-treatment for other homosexuals who yearn for freedom from their attractions.

We must teach our children that homosexuality is as normal and healthy as heterosexuality. Teenagers should be encouraged to celebrate their same-sex attractions.

Scientific research supports age-old cultural norms that homosexuality is not a healthy, natural alternative to heterosexuality. Research shows that gay teens are especially vulnerable to substance abuse and early, high-risk sexual behavior. It does far more harm than good to tell a teenager that his or her attractions toward members of the same sex are normal and desirable. Teens in this position need understanding and counseling, not a push in the direction of a potentially deadly lifestyle.
A 1992 study in Pediatrics found that 25.9% of 12-year-olds are uncertain if they are gay or straight. The teen years are critical to the question of self-labeling, so the facts must be presented in our schools in a fair and balanced manner.
