Redman Speaks on New Album: "'Let's see what Def Jam is going to do with Redman,' because other artists where complaining that the promotion was bullshit."

With an album set for release this April, Redman had a few words for MTV’s Mixtape Monday:
"I don't know how everybody else does it, but Def Jam is working like whatever gets played on the radio is your single. It's just like, if I got a record that I ain't even want to be the single, but if the bitch gets a certain amount of spins, that's my single [and] video. Another thing is they don't shoot videos off the bat no more. They wait till you get spins, then shoot. ... I know everybody is waiting to see, 'Let's see what Def Jam is going to do with Redman,' because other artists were complaining that the promotion was bullshit. You know the routine.
"I'm not gonna be the last man standing. I'd look like a fool saying, 'Def Jam didn't do this for me, that for me.' I'm self-sufficient, self-owned. These last four years, I've been going on the road my damn self, shaking hands. Letting people know this is coming out."And that's great. That's what an artist is supposed to do. But at the same token, it's the label's responsibility to back their artist and give them the proper promo that's necessary in helping to pull in numbers... the same thing they would do for Jay-Z or Young Jeezy. Otherwise, what the hell are you on a major label for? For all that, you might as well make like a mixtape artist and sell CDs from the back of your truck. I already see it: another More Fish is on the rise.
And did he just say Def looks at BDS to determine single selection and video promotion?

that explains alot of things. Ghostface had a single and i guess it was gettin spins up in NY, so they put out a video for it, but it still aint get that much national love. Same with LL. Method Man had a single on the radio, but it was garbage. The Roots had a single, but radios dissed it. So why would Def Jam spend all that money backin acts that don't move units?
'i luv it' was killin the radio and so was 'go getta', and jeezy got 2 videos so far, and his album is almost plat. Rick Ross is gold and he only got 2. Def Jam backs u depending on how much ur music is gonna make them. Niggas need to step they game up and quit complaining about promo.
So Redman better have a hot single, or we won't even see a video for it.

Every station has request lines. if people are feeling it, it will get rotated. If they not, it will not get played. Why waste 1 mil on promotion of something that may never get played? why spend money on promoting something that only you and your boi's like to hear? a major label is not simply there for promo. Red has been promoting his album for the last two years. He is doing it the Dre Way staying hot by not putting anything out. As they say at Guiness "BRIILLLANT". Do a few cameos and hit a remix with a fly pop artist. Shit that is all the promo you need just enough to stay on your mind but not too much where people start hating.
