Remo Da Rapstar is not your average rapper. As the creator of his marketing and distribution company, All City Distribution, the Castle Hill Projects MC is on the grind to not only prove himself as a businessman, but also as a “for the people†rapper coming straight out of the archives of street lyricism.
In this interview, SOHH speaks with the Justo Mixtape Award-winning artist about his hustle to widening his fan base, his focus on establishing himself as a businessman and building clout for other underground MCs, why Nas is number one, his views on the collapse of Harlem’s empire, why he feels “Jay-Z is like a modern-day Malcolm X.â€
SOHH: Introduce yourself for those who might not know.
Remo: What's going on ya'll this ya boy Remo Da Rapstar straight from the BX, Castle Hill/Carterville. I got that new CD out called Rapstar Phenomenon, in the streets right now. I'm also nominated for two Justo Awards: Best Underground Artists on a Mixtape, and Best East Cost Artist [UPDATE: Winner of the Best Underground Artist on a Mixtape Award].
SOHH: That's whassup. So you're from Castle Hill, but at the moment are you living…
Remo: I live in New York [laughs]. Nah, I still live in The Bronx.
SOHH: So what part?
Remo: I live on Carter. By Aqueduct.
SOHH: Oh yeah that's whassup. Okay so you grew up in The Bronx, so tell me how it was growing up in The Bronx in the whole hip-hop scene and whatnot.
Remo: Like growing up, I don't remember rap too much growing up like, growing up I really remember the crack epidemic. As far as when it came to music I really remember KRS-ONE growing up. But I really came up with the late '80s, early '90s, the Jay-Z, the Nas, the Biggies, Wu Tang Clan… that's what sticks out in my mind about hip-hop.
SOHH: So what are some of your most influential artists?
Remo: Nas. Nas is the most influential artist for me. Like, I didn't get him when he first put out Illmatic â€" it went over my head. But when he got to It Was Written with songs like "I Gave You Power," "Street Dreams." And I'm from Castle Hill, so that shit was going on out there. So it was like, he was speaking for us and to us. He was talking about coming up... all the hustling, and then he came with The Firm... it just made you wanna start rapping. 'Cause it wasn't like he was just talking to me, he was talking through me.
SOHH: Right. Now aside from rapping you're also involved in other aspects of the game, like you're widely known as a mixtape distributor.
Remo: My company [All City Distribution] is not just distribution. There's also marketing and promotions for all the DJs and up-and-coming artists, we establish artists. We help them on a street level but as far as creating their buzz, we’re establishing their buzz not just in New York, but Atlanta, Houston, and other markets throughout the U.S.
SOHH: Cool. So what underground artists have you been working with?
Remo: I've worked Papoose's project, Uncle Murda's project, I'm about to work Armageddon--that was down with Terror Squad-- his project, about to do Remy's project, David Banner…
SOHH: So you were seriously rapping before that right?
Remo: Yeah I was rapping before that. But you know, the politics of the game. Like, it's kinda hard getting in so, instead of me just saying 'I rap I'm hot, listen to my tape,' I figured out a business to barter my way in. Business is the language everybody speaks. Everyone speaks the language of money. So, it made it a little easier to approach a Big Mike or a Whoo Kid, or certain artists like Remy Ma to get collabos, get music played, versus like 'Yo I'm hot, hear my tape.' I've actually done something for them, so we could barter it out with each other.
SOHH: So you mentioned some of the big-named DJs... and I'm big on mixtapes. So what are some of the other big-name mixtapes you've appeared on?
Remo: Big Mike, Whoo Kid, Kay Slay, Green Lantern… I've been on everybody's tapes. I'm on everybody's tapes. [DJ] Drama…
SOHH: What are some of your past projects?
Remo: Rapstar Phenomenon is actually my first project. Like, I've really been building up my buzz in the underground for like a little bit over a year, like thirteen months I've building up that buzz for September 19th [release of his current project]. For two, three months I kept promoting for September 19th, September 19th, and in the midst of that I was on all the mixtapes, doing mixshows, DVDs, doing performances and parties. But the next thing coming up is gonna be with Big Mike, it’s called One Hit Away. It's slated to come out January '07, after the Mixtape Awards. And you can always hit me up on my Myspace: Myspace.com/remodarapstar. So you can keep in tune with all my latest shows and my projects, and see what's going on with my newest music. I got two videos out, I'm also on the new "Come Up" DVD that just came out, volume 11, I'm also gonna be on volume 12 with a freestyle. Anytime I do a freestyle and it bubbles in the streets, I do a video for it, like a week or two after, after I get the feedback. I put it out on DVDs... that's what I'm doing right now. I'm really trying to build up my fan base to like 50,000. I'm really going hard with the Myspace, the internet, so with my mixtapes I'm hoping I can build a fan base to like 50,000.
SOHH: So do you really freestyle? I mean….
Remo: Yeah I freestyle. Do you want me to freestyle?
SOHH: [laughs] Nah I mean I was just asking because, a lot of rappers say they can but they can't really freestyle.
Remo: Yeah it's a part of the art. I do it all like, I'm not just a businessman or just a rapper; I'm a different type of rapper. I'm not your rapper's... I'm not a rapper's rapper. I don't just rap for the rappers. I rap for the people. I'm not the rapper's rapper, I speak for what the people speak know what I'm saying. My music’s inspirational. I get calls from people saying ‘thank you.’ I get calls in England, Germany. I speak about the struggle. Right now you don't really hear any MCs... Everytime you hear MCs nowadays--not even MCs they're rappers-- you hear 'I got the coke, I got the Bentley, I got this and that' it lacks substance. But Remo, I speak for my block first. I speak for Castle Hill, I speak for the Carter, I speak for The Bronx, and that's the same language that somebody in South Africa feels, know what I'm saying? They going through the same things. It's everywhere so, I'm not just the rapper's rapper. I'm the peoples' rapper.
SOHH: Right. Now this is something I always ask people like, we're here in Harlem and you see what's going on around here, you see all the gentrification that's been going on… I mean…
Remo: It's just a matter of us controlling our own climate and destiny. And instead of sitting back saying what other people are doing, we need to sit back and look at ourselves first before we point our fingers and say 'the system…' you know. It starts with us first, it starts with what we do. You know, so … look at me with my career. I didn't sit back and say 'you know what, music is f'd up, hip-hop is f'd up, they won't let me in.' I took it upon myself to get myself in, and clear the lane for myself. I think we should start with the ownership of ourselves. Like, that’s how I was raised, my mother… you can't do nothing outside the household if the household wasn't clean. I couldn't go out the house if the house wasn't clean. So, before we speak on anybody else's situation it’s about us as a people to look at what we're doing for ourselves. We all sitting up here mad saying 'they doing this to Harlem,' but as soon as we get money we the first ones to move out. So we talking about 'these people are coming up in here and they buying out this,' when we get money, what we doing is we buying everything in their communities. You don't see them standing out there protesting like 'oh my god all these people buying our houses and they moving in and changing our community around.' It's like, vice-versa. That's how I look at it.
SOHH: So with that said, how do feel about us not really having any real leaders anymore, no one's standing up for anything anymore, like, all we see is sex symbols, and a lot of people seem to be looking up to that; in these times, there's no Malcolm X, there's no Martin Luther King, nothing…
Remo: Nah they here. It's just a different struggle, a different fight now. We're no longer fighting to ride the buses. Like, with the fight and the struggle, I see Jay-Z. Jay-Z is like a modern-day Malcolm X and Nas is like a modern-day Martin Luther King because they've opened the doors in different ways. Like you see them, Puffy, Dame Dash, like, you can own a basketball team. Remember twenty years ago what could a black person do with a whole basketball team. Or a Bob Johnson who owned BET. It's different ways. They still fighting. There's still people fighting for rights. You see Jay-Z opening up a 40-40 Club in Thailand, who's from Marcy Projects so it's like 'you know what, I can do that also,' and that opens the doors 'cause nine out of ten times, he's gonna bring some people that he grew up with.
SOHH: That's whassup I appreciate your take on that. Now, is there anything else you wanted to touch on? Any other future projects…
Remo: I can talk about that? Yeah… I've done MTV "Sucker Free," I did Cypha Sounds, I did Shade45 Radio about five or six different times. I'm currently getting my music played on Hot97 on mixshow. All the freestyles are being played. The "Just Do It" single, and that's been taking off in the South a lot. And Scratch, I'm in the next Source "Off the Radar," XXL coming up, Complex... and that's about it.

I have the new Jeezy and I must say that it is some hot garbage, LOL...I Luv It is probably the only song on there that I can feel, and that's simply because it's a club banger, it makes you wanna Back Dat Azz up like Juvenile say, but other than that, his ad-libbing and limited lyrical ability, paired with his overall wackness, just makes the CD a great spot to sit my Corona on...

Is it me or dou you all not realize what the media is doing. They are trying to start a North vs South rap battle to sell magazines, CDs, ad space on websites. Notice how media only ask southern rappers about the hip-hop is dead. They're trying to start another battle, while we as fans are falling for it.
The reason Jeezy asks Monie(in the middle) Love where she was from is because that affects your view of hip-hop. People from each coast ususally prefer their coasts' sound because thats what your environment reflects back to you.

I agree that the South is more beat driven then word play. I just grew up on Preemo, Diamond D, and Large Pro beats with slick word play and that is what is important to me. I think that an emcee w/ methephor's and word play, is more talented then emcee with beat driven simplier lyrics. That is just my opinion, so I won't hate on the South.

Nope, there's nothing to sustain that argument. It does take more thinking to put together the word play and what not, but it also takes creativity to make a good song, and that's what the south is eating on now.
