I really hate when artist compare sales because the ratio of shepards to sheep in the world is 1 out of 100. Therefore not everyone has the ability to think on their on to diagnose what is actually good music. Image sells these days unfortunately and if you ain't the linear thug stereotype you ain't getting bought. If you ain't talkin bout Coke there go your sales, most hip hop listeners have lost iq points as hip hop has become more simple. I just can't run with the sales aspect of things because I can't run with the sheep. Record sales don't matter or dictate quality of an album. However it does matter to the artist so if they don't sell it's not our lost. I see it like this they still have alot more money then all of us. Basically support your artist you like and stop focusing on sales.

Ive got a great feeling that nas is gonna do really well longevity wise in the sales department with this album. I think word of mouth will keep this album hanging on the chart longer than jays, even though he gonna do better opening numbers than nas. Ive seen some reviews for kingdome come, and they all gave it 3 out of 5, which dont sound too good for jay if nas comes with a classic straight after. And i know sales shouldnt matter, but if nas does very well, conscious rap is more likely to keep coming to the forefront again. It will show there is success to be had by going down that route, and not just by following the nursery rhyme format.

It's not that people are not buying. Mariah, Jamie, Mary, Justin and even T.I have all been successful in the past year. The labels flooded the street with garbage in terms of hip hop. They didn't realize that people could kinda enjoy southern hip hop if they had other options. They pretty much took away the options in 2006 which is why only the dopest southern rappers could sell, ie T.I and Luda. People got tired of all the cooning being blasted from the radio and BET.

I think 2007 is going to turn things around with quality lyricists coming back to the forefront. Then you'll see the high sales in hip hop again.

Question has a point. Nas has never sold as much as fans have thought he should, but I think it's going to be differant this time.

Nas has had to compete at a time when there were many many quality artists out there. That's not the case this time. Due to him and Jay ending the beef and his Def Jam deal and even his marraige to Kelis he has a lot of buzz right now. His album is more widely anticipated than in the past. I even think that it is a good idea for him, Jay and Game to be coming out at the same time. They will drive each other's sales rather than take them away from each other.

This could be a battle like Jamie and Mary where you can't wait to see whose winning each week. But I will admit that Nas will probably sell less than Game and Jay.

I all honesty don't think today's generation is ready for Nas. Unless you are 25 and older, and grew up listening 'not hearing' but listening to Nas' music. Today's average music buyer/listerner 15 to early 20s can't comprehend let alone relate to the topics that Nas raps about. With the exception of "Nastradamus" he has always put out quality music with thought provoking lyrics. Even that cd is better than most of the bullshit put out today. Like most of you have already stated. "Streets Disciple" not a huge seller, but to me was one of Nas' greatest LPs. He touched on politics, marriage, fatherhood, hood scenarios, war, black women..ect. So I'm really looking forward to "Hip Hop is Dead", because it really is. I never been a fan of double CD's but Street Disciple was a good album (for Nas standard Good, compared to everybody else classic) I just took my fav songs and made one disc for Street's Disciple.

I've only heard a few tracks from each artist (Game and Banks). But look at it this way: both are flawed to a degree. Game is a nice lyricist, but his name dropping becomes too much. Nothing new for MCs to do that but you get tired.

Banks is a nice lyricist, but his punchlines get stale...the ice this, car that, flip this, clap that.

Now, when I heard a couple of tracks off the mixtape for Banks, I saw some maturity. Then every single I've heard outside of cake is "Massacare Era G-Unit"...nothin new.

Game on the other hand spent the whole summer dissin niggas, and made me think his album will be some bullshit. Then I heard the leaked shit. Dude is way ahead of the curve compared to other niggas two albums in. Pseudo gangsta or not, there are certain things he grasps well and one is riding beats, layering metaphors, writing inciteful shit.

All the classic albums we speak of have that vulnerable side. Reasonable Doubt, Ready to Die, Makavelli, Illmatic. A nigga won't be a great MC until he can do somethin other than write punchlines.

2) Nas was never a gangsta, never hustled or anything. He was always that kid you grew up with who stuck around the crew but when shit broke out didn't want to participate or didn't want to make money. So it's funny to see him in his albums talk as if he did this stuff or seen it first hand.

3) Nas tries to act all fucking political and say the right things (like KRS-1) but I call hypocrite. This dude dropped out of school mad early (not like he was selling crack or in a gang so why bother dropping out, oh yea he's retarded), then just bummed off his LITTLE brother and the bravehearts and their money.
