Hip-Hop Politics as Usual: X-CLAN

xclanbrotherj.jpg

They came after Public Enemy, but held it down before cats like Dead Prez and Mos. Not enough info for you Nellies and Jeezies? Then press the "back" button. This discussion is irrelevant to you anyways.

For the schooled and familiar, X-Clan's Brother J recently sent a message to Thuglifearmy with thoughts on whether a commercial, candy shop-plagued generation of hip-hop would appreciate the Clan's next release:

"The new X Clan album (Return from Mecca) is the guinea pig project for a new "Golden Era" in this new Millennium. Do the supporters of that era still exist? Does the original X Clan audience even listen to Hip Hop? Will the new generation embrace the X Clan like the previous generation? These are issues that I had to address when I started this project, these are questions I had before I approached any label; as you can see by this album's completion means I have faith in the people! The "Golden Era" of music was created by the people not the artists; the power of the people is not just a statement but a reality. It's time to represent! Every person that complains about radio and video content, every parent that can't share current day Hip Hop with there seeds, every artist that spits fire intelligence and can't be heard; Step up and reclaim your ground!"

Say word.

In a past interview, Brother J, although a foreign name to many of you SOHH readers, addressed issues that are very much part of today's hip-hop conversation:

New York is overwhelmed with too many artists right now. There is no room for power moves unless you're trying to compete with the Roc-a-Fellas and the Bad Boys and so on. Right now their history is too deep rooted, Ja Rule has more history than us right now for a younger head than what we have done for an entire era. The education has to continue to build.

We don't have the Jaguar companies, the Mercedes companies, so you have to think about who has that. We don't have any Courvoisier plant. You're not supporting me when you do that. (These commercial rappers) gotta do that to get that out there. People are so caught up in the labels, that when you see it on the videos you want that real brand. As black folks we gotta lot of ego, its our fault this industry is like this.

I think there needs to be a boycott by the consumer. Quality control by the people who change this industry. It has nothing to do with the artist. The labels obey what the people want. If you want adult entertainment then there will be 5 more Lil' Kims. That's why Dead Prez didn't make it, you turn on your BET and you tell me who is mad. Everyone's smiling, drunk, dancing with fine women and aint mad about a damn thing. Everyone with a message is angry. Why? Because they are way back in the game and they gotta struggle. You have to enjoy the struggle. You gotta say I'm a warrior man, if it wasn't hard then it wouldn't be worth it. When the people start thinking like that and the artist starts to think like that, then shit will change brother. Trust me with that."

Since Soundscan is already reflecting a subtle sign of a boycott, the question isn't whether or not this will work. The question is, rather, when it will begin.

R.I.P. PROFESSOR X & GERALD LEVERT.

IF WE THE CONSUMER BEGIN TO SUPPORT INDEPENDANT ARTISTS BASED ON IF WE LIKE THE SONGS OR NOT INSTEAD OF WAITING TO CO-SIGN BIASED BLOGS,MAGAZINES AND PAYOLA COUNTDOWNS...WE WILL SURELY GO BACK TO THE 'GOLDEN AGE'. IN THE EARLY 90'S NEW JACK SWING RAPPERS & PRO-BLACK RAPPERS WOULD SHARE THE SAME CONCERTS WITH REGIONAL TASTES LIKES BASS & GO GO GIVING EVERYONE SOMETHING THAT THEY LIKE. THAT WOULDN'T HAPPEN NOW B/C THE MACHINE IS SELLING 'IMAGES'. YOU WOULDN'T SEE M.O.P. & DFB ON THE SAME BILL. WE EVEN ACT LIKE WE HAVE TO CHOOSE SIDES WHEN RAPPERS BEEF. WE FOLLOW ALONG LIKE LEMMINGS. ONCE WE SUPPORT INDI ARTISTS, LABELS WILL FOLLOW US. WE'VE ALL HEARD ILL MUSIC ON MYSPACE BUT WOULD NEVER PLAY IT IN FRONT OF ANYBODY B/C WE GOTTA WAIT UNTIL IT BLOWS FIRST. TAKE BACK THE MUSIC!!!

ffffffffffirts hoesssssssssss!!!! x-clan give it up please ssssisssyyyyyy!!!

I can't lie, i don't know not one damn song from the X-clan, but i understand what he is saying and i concur 100%. the hiphop comunity is getting tired of all the bullshit and soon the weak, and basic artist will cease to exist. Now with all the drama in the world, we need someone to take it back.

As far as the project he's speaking of selling, that won't happen. We need a young head to restart a movement like that. Hiphop markets to the youth, and the youth needs someone they can identify with. No offense, but most 13-20 yr olds wants to listen to some old ass dude that comes off as their pops. But at least dude aint soundin all salty and out of touch like KRS-1 does sometimes.

my bad ssssssssecond hoesssssssssssss!!!!!!!!

why you gotta sneak diss on jeezy and nelly you always hatin reckless you need to stay in your lane pussy nigga

I CO-SIGN THE DUDE ABOVE

POSITIVE RAP AINT NEVER GONNA SELL THE NUMBERS IT DID IN THE LATE 80'S UNTIL A YOUNG CAT TAKE THE MANTLE AND STARTS A WORLDWIDE MOVEMENT AND ISH-BUT THIS AINT GONNA HAPPEN NO TIME SOON

LIKE J SAID THERE AINT NOT STRUGGLE BASED LYRICS THESE DAYS. EVERYBODY BLINGING OR BEEFING. BESIDES IF 80% OF THE RAP CONSUMERS ARE KIDS IN THE SUBURBS WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THEY GONNA BUY ANYTHING PRO-BLACK AND LATINO-THINK??

THE INDUSTRY AINT GONNA GIVE A BIG BUDGET TO A POSITIVE RAP ACT EITHER UNTIL ONE OF THOSE ARTIST GOES DOUBLE PLATNINUM! I DONT SEE TALIB-MOS DEF-DEAD PREZ-ROOTS-COMMON OR ANY OTHER POSITIVE RAPPER PULLING BIG SOUNDSCAN NUMBERS. UNTIL ONE OF THESE POSITIVE RAPPERS BREAKS LOOSE WIT SOME REAL NUMBERS WE WILL STILL BE LISTENING TO G-UNIT AND COMPANY EVERY 15 SECONDS ON COMMERCIAL RADIO

BROTHER J GIVE IT UP BRO TODAYS GENERATION AINT TRYING TO HEAR ANYBODY OVER 40. NO DISRESPECT, BUT IN THE 80'S WE WERENT TRYING TO LISTEN TO NO OLD ASS HATING ASS BROKE ASS NI99AS EITHER-WHETHER THEY WERE RIGHT OR NOT.

GET A 9-5 BROTHER J, YOURE DONE!! THIS GAME IS FOR THE YOUTH BABY!

I think the X-Clans relevance to the game has pretty much been in Limbo since the late 80's. These cats should be in the schools teaching the future leaders. Take a note out of Sadat X's book. Your career is over if you want a change to come about in the culture like it or not you have to school the little knuckle heads that get fooled by 106 and Park and think that record sales make the artist.

@ Hateraide007

I don't think money is a relevant issue in the matter. I'm 27 and I think that the biggest problem in the game is that we don't listen to the 40 and up. Regaurdless of age everyone I know who has been fortunate enough to make it to that age has a jewel to pass off. When Nas is 40 i'll still buy his shit, Jay is almost 40 and people are still buying his shit. What's the age got to do with it if you nice? Sales don't make you nice. And on the real closing your mind to any advice or possibly ground breaking material isn't a youth thing it's just a stupid thing.

How can u not remember 'To the East Blackwards' & 'Exodus' by X-Clan?! They are classics! Them 2 albums sound better than 85% of the garbage out there 2day! Brother J was the messenger, Suga Shaft(RIP) was the rhythm provider, Paradise was the Architect, and Professor X was the most intelligent hype man ever! If hip hop is dead, the X-Clan will surely bring it back 2 life. VAINGLORIOUS, THIS IS PROTECTED by the RED, the BLACK, & the GREEN. With a KEY in the IGNITION....ON THE ROAD AGAIN.....SISSYYYYYYYY!!....P.S. Jamie Foxx & Marques Houston has FAKE HAIRLINES!!!! LOL ITS TRUE!!!!!

Peace to the real!

Reckless, good try but a lot of these kids have no idea who Bro J is much less X Clan. Them niggas used Parliament tracks before Dr. Dre even decided it was a good look. Bro J was kicking knowledge on black shit along with PE and their shit was hot. He even had his version of Fuck the Police behind that Special Ed beat with a little En Vogue hook in the background. He's the only rapper to beef with KRS and not have his career destroyed. Niggas wasn't even talking about the Red, Black and Green before them niggas. When they drop, I'm copping it because I'm sure the message will be excellent. If they just recycle some of their old beats, Bro J's voice will be enough to carry the tracks. All of you supposed pro black niggas need to be in the store also because you all need them Funkin Lessons.

Oh yeah!

XBX quit hiding in the background.

Bears, Bears, mufukin Bears!

All you Giants fans, stop hiding. Come out and take your medicine like men.

WATS ROCIN SOHH?

HUEY FREEMAN, BIG SUN

WUT IT IS?

=TAH=

@ Huey

The game is Fucked when you decide not to listen to shit because of pre-concieved notion. OFF THE SUBJECT: The Jay-Z Album is Hot GARBAGE. I'm wondering what the Fuck he was thinking. I'm so pissed off about the shit I took the whole weekend to listen and i'm convinced, Sorry to say it (Jordan on the Wizards). Mean while Nas shit is Bananas!!!

I have to agree with some of the comments above. Older acts can reach and older audience who is definately still out there, but I don't know how well they will do with the younger set.

I know the message can sell because Kanye is doing it. We keep forgetting about him, but he brings some serious issues to the forefront. We don't want to mimic his whole style, but he is differant from all of the other positive artists many are naming. Mos, Common, Dead Prez are all kinda similar all the way down to their style of clothing, Kanye is differant. Louder and more flamboyant and the kids seem to like that.

I think the older cats should put their stuff out, people I will buy it. Don't forget that as the parent for the most part I am buying ALL of the music in the house. And you can rest assured that I pick up my stuff even before I get my daughter's except at x-mas and birthday time.

@ Tahjack50n

I'm gonna Lay the Shit out Flat. For Years the Government has been aiming at Killing the Dreamers and they have been very successful. The problem with our culture is that we fail to dream anymore, we've painted over the walls of thought with mindless hip hop, stupid tv shows that subliminally set new lows in our particular subculture. We let the dreamers die, we made them hide in fear because no one picked up the pieces after the blood was shed in the Audubon Ball Room that day when a dreamer was slain in front of his Children, We didn't attempt to resusitate a dreamer when died with his eyes open on a Hotel Balcony, we said what are we gonna do now. Hip Hop and our culture itself is becoming a jail because it's trapping the minds of the Kids by telling them there are limits. Why do we have the same subject matter. Fuck the Bullshit You can wake up and still be a Muthaphuckin dreamer, God will bless your soul because you living to die but go out kicking and screaming and make your dent in history before you leave this shit. OPEN YOUR FUCKIN MINDS HIP HOP NIGGAS!!! Kill the master and eat at his table!!! I'm done!

We're starting a crusade 2 take back OUR music

@ KSH

It's no lie I am a fan and I was very disappointed. I can't believe that he actually wanted that material to be associated with him. I think he's too far gone into the life style of being rich that he has failed to touch the base of the fans who originally bought Reasonable doubt.

TAH:
Hey baby grl! I had to migrate to Soulful for a while but I am sure that you are holding down the estrogen factor in here!
