Everyone should know by now that I'm a real hip-hop head. And I don't appreciate the garbage that has been plaguing TV, dominating spins on the radios, and brainwashing folks into believing this crap music is real rap music. So when people ask why I'm so hard on artists -- especially artists like Fat Joe who went from the first (crack) Terror Squad album to sell-out Lil' Wayne cameos -- and people ask why I come down so hard on these clowns... well, that would be the reason.
Finally, after months and months of spitting fire at about every rapper on the bubblegum bandwagon, my vision has finally extracted itself from out of wishful thinking; just check Nielsen's Soundscan. I remember not too long ago when anyone could snap and lean their way to gold status. But times have changed. I knew this shit wouldn't last forever.
I first noticed it with Young Dro, who, despite his catchy "Shoulder Lean" single, is still working on 200K after months of release. Unk had "Walk it out," but only pushed 10K. Chingy ... I don't know. Not to omit the fact that a real quality artist, Lupe, didn't do well but his situation was somewhat different. Next, the camel has put yet another nail in the gorilla's coffin. Then yesterday, I peeped the charts and Jebbs, Jobbs -- whatever-- only pushed 46,000. But with all the airplay, I could've sworn "Chain Hang Low" was supposed to be the next best thing. Apparently not.
And I love it.
Maybe it's because I live off of Ghostface joints, Nas' old shit, Green Lantern mixtapes, and hip-hop pioneer biographies. But still, ask any other hip-hop fiend with the New York state of mind, and they'll most likely tell you the same thing I'm thinking: Upon observation of the present Soundscan condition, it can be said that people are growing tired of wasting their twelve dollars and change on music that has no quality, slim-to-no lyrical makeup, and no meaning. But not to get it twisted... there are a few exceptions to this.
Still, the majority of the recent releases just can't seem to move a decent unit. This is a real good look for hip-hop. Sales are down. Soundscan, keep it up. It's time to put some substance back into the music.

i co-sign all uv said!truth is,from the word go,MOST rappers cldnt even give a full album worth of smashes but at least 3/4 of the stuff was listenable to.even the best have not consistently(i dnt even think its possible)give u classic after classic but now its just been taken to new depths.1 "questionable" hit single,and these cats think theyr the real dookie.everything else is pure trash.
also the fact that these songs are easily downloadable means that album sales of such rappers will further b reduced as potrayed by the soundscan numbs.good thing if u ask me.
i still prefer listening to the older albums.etc nas illmatic,eric and rakim'paid in full,jayz reasonable doubt/blueprint,enter the 36th chamber(all classics)but also VERY good albums like most krs joints,all common's workand dogg food etc but thing is,its not only for nostalgia has as much as these peeps made sense!aspiring rappers step ur game up!!!

I think that the time of big album sales is over period for everyone. With the blackmarket being such a huge issue in the devaluation of sales I think your going to see this as a trend. The numbers are also effected by the economy, I know they say the economy is going well but it's only cool for the rich. The Hip Hop fan is effected. The music is garbage and until there is either a lowering in the price of albums or someone makes a revolutionary album that demands to be bought that will make a change in the climate of hip hop this will continue.

Like I said yesterday people forgot tha if you move 100-1 million that's still good, getting over 1 million is genius for record exec's. Rappers like The Game aren't smart, all this runing around causing shit, hatin'' cost money, promotion money and when he doesn't go double plat again he will be in the red and broke. 50 was smart with Banks, Banks's cd has brought in 2.7 million dollars so far, It didn't cost that much for radio, pressing, marketing and he should go Gold eventually. It's all about making money. 3.RADIO pt.2 - PAYOLA need I say more. Payola can help a talented artist get more spins for their hot tracks .But it can also get a wack artist more spins for a wack track .
2.DOWNLOADS - Yes this really should be number one , but its just not as important . LIMEWIRE,KAZAA,NAPSTER when out , MORPHEUS all attribute and will attribute to the downfall in sales. Regardless Artist should start relying on Internet sales like Itunes . Cuz the Old Samgoody Days are almost gone unless something is done .

We all knew it was going to turn around. Fads are cyclical in nature and they always end. Just as history always repeats itself, true hip hop will return. The month is now here and a lot of us will be in the stores copping every hot, recognizable name on the shelf. For those that don't like Lupe, what a shame. I think some of his stuff is good, some not so good, some excellent on a grand scale. He repps Chicago well and his style reflects our city. I think that's the reason along with his lack of name recognition that he hasn't blown. But, just as scans don't determine hotness, they also don't determine wackness. Hip hop is coming back, r u ready!

It's not hate, it's criticism. Some of these guys deserve to be ridiculed for some of the things they say, do and drop. A lot of these guys are humans, but they have enough money to hire a publicist. Go get one to issue your releases and coach you on how to do interviews. There is so much copy catting going on right now that hip hop is losing it's appeal to a lot of it's oldest listeners. Forums like this are the places to express that anger.
Why is it whenever someone talks about hip-hop being dead, you all blame rappers for being to materialistic? And yet who are your"legends"? BIG and Pac, go back and listen to their shit-they're braggin about what they got and how fly they are. Now don't get me wrong, I still bump that shit. But what's truly missing is diversity in hip-hop. I agree with everything you're saying Reckless and people need to understand that it's not a diss to the south because there are a lot of other regions putting garbage out now. Record labels just haven't caught on yet, radio spins don't always turn into platinum plaques. Everyone can tell you a song they'll listen to on the radio, but never actually go cop the album. Artists need to start being themselves and stop trying to do what they think will get them spins and album sales. I'm happy this shit isn't selling and I'm ready for mainstream rap to die out and fall off.
