ATLANTA, Georgia -- An informant cited in a search warrant as having purchased narcotics at an elderly Atlanta woman's house denies buying drugs there, authorities say.

Undercover officers raiding the 88-year-old woman's house shot her to death last week after she fired on them while they broke down her door in a high-crime neighborhood.

Federal prosecutors will investigate the case, Atlanta police Chief Richard Pennington announced Monday. (Watch when the snitch says he got the call to concoct a drug-buy story )

Pennington said the eight-member narcotics squad that took part in the raid has been placed on paid leave while investigators look into the informant's story and the circumstances surrounding the November 21 death of Kathryn Johnston.

The informant also told investigators from the Atlanta police internal affairs bureau that he was told to lie about the matter, the chief said.

"The FBI will investigate his statements, along with the police officers' statements as well," Pennington said.

Authorities said Johnston opened fire on police who tried to enter her home, prying off burglar bars and forcing open her door, during a "no-knock" drug raid. Officers returned fire, killing her.

Relatives put Johnston's age at 92, but Fulton County medical examiners said she was 88.

Neighbors and relatives said the raid had to have been a mistake. They said Johnston lived alone and was so afraid of crime in her neighborhood west of downtown Atlanta that she wouldn't let neighbors who delivered groceries for her come into her home.

Atlanta police reviews 'no-knock' policy
In an affidavit used to obtain the search warrant, narcotics officers said an informant had purchased two bags of crack cocaine from a man identified only as "Sam" in the home earlier that day.

Pennington said he called in federal prosecutors and the FBI after internal affairs investigators questioned the informant during the weekend.

"After we brought the informant in and interviewed that informant, he told us that he had no knowledge of going into that house to purchase drugs," he said. "That's what he told us. I don't know if he went in or not. We don't know if he's telling the truth."

In an interview with Atlanta's WAGA-TV, the informant said he had never been to Johnston's house.

"I'm telling them, I never went to the house," the informant told the station. "The police can't say I ever went to the house."

The informant then said police called him and told him "you need to cover our ass."

"It's all on you -- have to tell them about this Sam dude," the informant said police told him.

Pennington said the man was being "put away in a secure place" until the FBI could question him. The chief also promised to make "every document, every witness and piece of evidence" available to investigators.

Meanwhile, the seven narcotics officers and a sergeant were put on administrative leave with pay, and the department is reviewing its use of "no-knock" raids after the shootout, he said. The warrants are common in narcotics cases when officers fear suspects may try to dispose of drugs or evidence in the time it takes authorities to gain access to the home.

In addition to the FBI and Justice Department, the Fulton County district attorney's office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are taking part in the probe.

Pennington made his reputation cleaning up a corrupt New Orleans, Louisiana, Police Department in the 1990s. He said the "intense speculation and suspicion" surrounding Johnston's death spurred him to call in outside agencies.

"There are many unanswered questions. I promise each and every citizen that the complete truth will be eventually known, whatever that might be," he said. "But we must all exercise patience while we examine and re-examine every single aspect of these tragic events."

A spokesman for Johnston's family, the Rev. Markel Hutchins, went to Washington to request a federal investigation Monday. Hutchins said he had received assurances that agents would conduct a "swift and thorough" investigation into the woman's death.

Hutchins said the three midlevel officials with whom he met also promised "all resources at our disposal" to help counter the fallout in the African-American community from the shooting. He said he urged Justice Department officials to press for strong federal guidance to local police departments against the use of no-knock warrants.

A little history...
New Orleans was home to some of the most influential black families in the United States, many owned slaves. A lot of that land ("shitty" as you call it) was passed down generation to generation. Actually, many blacks owned land before the slaves were free in New Orleans.

What made the land "shitty" was the constant decline of the city's economy (major corporations moved to Atlanta, and HOUSTON) taking the jobs with them. Then the crack era hit hard. Not to mention, the deterioration of the actual land-no one thought to protect the surrounding wettlands.

Truth be told, the land was NEVER shitty when my mom grew up in the 7th ward, and it was pretty nice when her parents grew up.

Now here's where it gets fucked up. New Orleans had the lowest salary per capita of any major city in the US, but blacks living on that land, had to pay little taxes and endure a lower cost of living. So a lot of those folks didn't want to leave. To them the land wasn't so shitty.

And I guess those greedy developers wait for the green light to bulldoze the Lakefront, the East and the Lower 9 to make New Orleans more palatable for the rich think the land is "shitty" too right?

Fuck outta here.

Yesterday's topic took me for a loop because I am a scientific researcher and just like the kid Black Friday said several weeks ago this blog represent a pretty good sample population in terms of Black thought and it was very discouraging to me as a black man and a researcher that negative black images and black stereotypes generally was viewed by as we say in research a significant percentage of the sample population I found that to be discouraging. When I think of all the work Earl Hutchinson, Dr Jawanja Kunjufu, Dr. Frances Cress Wesley, Dr. Neally Fullere, Bill Cosby, your boy Haki right there in Chicago and Malcolm X, Dr. Puissant out of Harvard University and countless others and again how they have work so incredibly hard to get us to see straight and to reject these harmful and hurtful images and to see a clear and commanding majority dismiss their work (by endorsing Flavor of Love) as trite and insignificant it just bothers me.

Anyway; I have learned in life that the things you can’t change or understand leave them alone and keep on moving.

Now the Katrina topic is little more global in scope then yesterday topic so my rhetoric is slightly different.

That would be the racial aspect of Katrina at work. Poor generational education at it's height. Whites are a little more open to society's necessities such as insurance. Blacks are much more distrustful. It's usually because of the discriminatory practices of the companies that control societies necessities. In many other cases, it's because of some silly urban legend surrounding misinformation passed down through word of mouth.

I think that is the entire issue with Katrina.

It's easy to blame racism, but we also have to look inward. We as blacks have to stop being so distrustful of change. I honestly believe that poverty and the digital divide are our biggest problems. Look at this blog for example. After a certain time, a lot of you disappear. I know it's not because a lot of u are just so busy after work hours that you can't jump in. It's because a lot of u don't have either a computer or an internet connection at home. If there is a computer at home, it's probably old and slow.

We have to start taking advantage of the same breaks that whites get on our taxes, financing options, credit repair and legal options. The key is to go out and get good financial advice and follow it. Why follow Uncle Johnny or Aunt Bessie that is only flossing at the Family Picnic in their new car and fancy sweat suits? Their asses are working 50 hrs a piece at that factory and their both btwn the age of 55 and 60. Look at the truly successful people that you know. You know the ones that are home everyday by 3:30 and are not flashy. They'll be retired by the age of 55.

I heard that conversation when it happened. I don't think ESPN should have fired Limbaugh. I think they did it because they know it was a mistake to add him to the broadcast in the first place. I have had that happen to me. This dude I was seeing did the same damn thing. Except one night he forgot to log out and when I got on the computer his yahoo popped up automatically. He had seen this girl about 3 times while we were together - so when she was talking I pretended to be him. I set up a date and she was there.

I READ IT ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO AND IT STEPPED MY GAME UP SOMETHING FIERCE.

My only problem with Jay now is that whole whispering flow he has. I remember him doing it on the Murder Marcyvill remix where he disses Nas. Little by little he incorporated it more and more into his rhyme style. Even though most of the beats didn't knock like Black Album or even the first Blueprint, less whispering could have made certain points he was trying to convey sound better.

Solid album.
One of the better lyrical albums in a while.

Snoop's shit to me came out more complete this season.

All in all though between those albums and Hell Hath No Fury, I got some good music to choose from.

Fat Joe made a crazy album, that no one is paying attention to. But hip hop needs that balance. That gave me a mid late 90's vibe which is needed. Raw beats and hard lyrics.
