Jadakiss' "Why" was a much needed breath of fresh air to the rap game back in 2004. The remix, which featured Styles, the ever-conscious rapper Common, the street-poetic Nas, and haunting vocals by Anthony Hamilton, raised awareness in a variety of issues going on today's society.
In the late '80s, the powerful force of Public Enemy helped to launch a political uproar -- both influentially and offensively. With Enemy's second album, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, in conjunction with Chuck D naming rap "the black CNN," the doors quickly opened for the crew to become subject to ridicule and finger pointing, for they were, needless to say, the epitome of controversy.
Immortal Technique and only a handful of others are on the scene as we speak, but they don't receive the glorification and praise that was present in the earlier days of rap. This is not a surprise, but to say that conscious rap doesn't sell would omit this fact: As of late, I have never seen the hip-hop/rap SoundScan numbers look so barren since I first began to monitor the charts. Lately, the pop and R&B rap that has fickled and fizzled the minds of millions via radio airplay has only granted these artists debuting numbers under a measly 100K. I've noticed this trend for a while now, with the exception of a few lucky artists who have hit the high 100s. And whether you believe it or not, the charts are not a good look for hip-hop at this moment in time, in addition to numerous flops despite decent debuting and second week numbers.
Could it be that consumers are growing tired of the same ol' garbage being thrown out as a means to capitalize and exploit? If we're not buying the garbage being played on air, then what are we buying?

To me, greed and the actual passion for the art are why there are no messages in rap anymore. The money has been put first rather than a way of expression now. What happened to the message is that these labels control everything.For the most part they have the most control over what singles are going to be picked for your album. People like Kanye and Common are fortunate enough to have had controll in hte past where they can give you something hot as well a throw in some "jewels" without being to preachy. What's sup people how ya'll doing today. I'm happy Sohh finally decided to discuss a credible topic today. Now instead of posting all day about 50 vs game we can talk about something relevant. I don't care what nobody says but right now the state of HIP HOP has never been more decripid. And it's all our fault black people, you know why? Because we have become morally and spiritually devoid. To put it plainly, I asked one of my friends who happens to be from Chicago, how come he's not supporting Lupe Fiasco. He said "oh that weird nigga. He be ryhming about skateboarding." And instead this fool goes on to tell me about the latest Young Joc song. WTF!!! And then he becan juking and jiving showing me how his kids be doing the "motorcyclye dance". Son is a grown man too. To tell you the truth I was disgusted and sick to my stomach. I clowned this dude for the rest of the week afterward. Yes we do need some music for the club, but where is the balance? Where is the lyrics, rap is all about the lyrics fuck a beat. Back in days the best lyrcist battled acappela in the park. I'm only 23 but I feel old because I can't get into this no Hip Pop, and I call it that because it ain't HIP HOP. I have been a relentless pain in the ass to those people who love artists who “rap†around these nice melodies and singing choruses and essentially rap about how wealthy they are and how many women they have smashed. While I do believe Hip Hop does have a place for that message I do feel that message have been oversaturated on people and perhaps finally the senses of people are dull to the point where it no longer is appealing to them (wishful thinking).
It amazes me that the Hip Hop artists with the exception of a few have not talked forcefully about Katrina. I am also shocked and amazed that the Iraq war is not on the consciousness of the Hip Hop community (well I really should say rap community). With Black males making up 6 percent of the U.S population but 40 percent of the population I am baffled that there is such a level of unconsciousness amongst the artists.
I mean I can’t imagine NWA not saying “fuck the police.†I admired the fact that they did not capitulate even when the FBI started to investigate them. I can’t imagine Tupac not talking about being trapped in a racist system of “criminal injustice†or his call to Black women to keep their heads up given all the trials and tribulations they have faced or are facing. I can’t imagine KRS not telling me about Black Cops ( I already knew but it was still a good look) and his Philosophy and that I must learn. I could relate to KRS 1 when he said “I don’t want a God that Blesses Americaâ€â€¦.U know given all her evil….I mean I could relate to that.
I could relate to Queen Latifah and Monie Love telling Brothers “Ladies first†and why “Ladies First.†I could relate to Queen Latifah explanation of UNITY…I just could. I could feel why Parris had scope on George Bush senior…I understood it. We all love hip-hop for what it is supposed to be, and we appreciate it. Sadly we are a dying breed. We can fight as hard as we want, but eventually must face the grim reality that the compass of popularity depends on youth, when their minds are trash, they will feed it with more trash. The older generation had/has purpose, the youth mock it. I believe it is an endless battle that will eventually end up in the demise of real hip hop, it will always be around but will change for the worse, just like rock, look at the message and purpose of old rock, now look at today... Old country is the same, the old country had a message and meaning, today it's so commercial it makes me sick. Rap is still a child compared to other genres of music and is on a downhill slope, i believe our fight for hip hop with a message is in vain.
I do have to take some exception to one thing:

The word nigga is a term of endearment in our community. There is nothing derogatory about it in any way, shape or form. There is an historical context related to offensive terminology and the word nigga doesn't fit into that vein of thought. His explanation is correct, we use the word nigga because they call us that anyway. Blacks have a history of taking a negative term and making it a positive for us. Especially when the term is not black-exclusive. Every race contains their share of niggas. Now when you begin to use the word Negroe in reference to a black person that is enlightened, that is when you have a problem. That term is black-exclusive and quite derogatory.
You made a few statements that I refute:

It's kind of like the choice between Kerry and Bush in 2004. You could choose based on the information presented at the time to feel safe about how America is protected from the terrorist by voting for Bush, or have questions about our protections by choosing Kerry. yes, i believe you are correct in that statement. but it is my opinion that baggy pants for instance are not being banned simply because WHITE kids are doing it, i believe this and some other fads are being banned for one reason and one reason only:
1.) With the addition of whites wearing baggy pants it's simply a numbers game, more whites doing it, means more KIDS doing it, which means the administrators will take a harder look at the trend, and will in return warrant a stronger stance... not a black thing, or white thing at all.

Maybe it's just me but I'm actually feel like it is a losing battle to put out something that has a message and soul to it in this day and time. I thought about getting into the game, saying what I had to say, but I feel like these rap cats out now have fucked it up.

If the albums rappers were putting out were actually movies visually showing what they are describing 2 things would happen. One they wouldn't sell tickets. No one likes to see the same thing over and over again. 2 the communinty (minority that is) would be outraged that this shit is being shoveld down there kids throats on such a frequent basis, and such an accessible one as well.
I have no problem with folk rapping about things theyv'e done but keep it short and simple if it wasn't constructive, legal, or positive. I know that sounds kinda PM dawnish but it's the truth. Now it's like you need a certificate from your hood just to be accepted as a rapper. What happend to getting the message out. Trying to improve your people or change the mindstate of the folk listening to your joint. That shit got thrown out the window.
