...Well partially. In an interview with VH1, Hov finally addressed the questions that have been voiced by inquiring minds who want to know (myself included) why he's brewing competition amongst the Def Jam roster:
"The funny thing about Def Jam is when people say, 'How can you put out an album and promote [other records] at the same time?' The amount of albums that come out of Def Jam and always come out of Def Jam is like 60 albums in a year. There is an extraordinary amount of work; it's not like my album is any different. When people say, 'How can you put an album out?' I say, 'Well it worked for [former Def Jam CEO] Lyor [Cohen]. It made Lyor look like a genius, it should make me look like a genius too!'"The best moment in Def Jam's history, well the one that I can recall, is when Lyor was going to sell the company for maybe $80 or $90 million. Then one month, Lyor put out [albums] by myself, Ja Rule and DMX, everyone did great. I think there's something to be said about a company and having synergy and having energy and having a bunch of artists come out at the same time. I think that works also."
"All the great runs was when artists came out back-to-back. When No Limit had their run and Bad Boy had their run and Death Row had their run it was more than one artist doing it. So I just think it makes only logical sense. I think people pick at [my album coming out] because I guess it's an opening. But we're still doing our thing, number one market share, I don't know how much more can we do. We'll do more but I don't know what's higher than number one."
Okay fair enough. But the issue, however, is not solely the fact that he's coming out with an album...whatever. What he needs to explain is why The Roots didn't get anything close to the kind of marketing he's receiving now? Can he explain why Black Thought said The Roots only owe Def one more album? Can he explain Method Man's situation? And why did he hastily step in front of Nas and let his album get pushed back?
As far as the "Lyor Cohen formula," we'll see how far this goes, being that Jay is the "opening act." Only time will tell.
And by the way, I'm pretty sure that Hov's new "Damon Dash dis," "Lost Ones," will be circulating hard within the next 12 hours ...

I think Hov is a in the same boat as Puff. He's not secure enough to sit back and chill and let the game take it's course like it needs to. I agree with you Reckless where was the promotion for the Roots? Why is Kanye so unhappy over there? I am not impressed by the songs he has dropped and I think it's ashame that he's going to go out Like LL. He'll go with more money but he doesn't even have the hunger anymore. As far as Nas being pushed back goes, Nas's tracks that I have for his Album are incredible it doesn't even matter who goes first in that matter. Classic material. I think Jay may end up being the emperor with no clothes.
I heard the lost ones track it sounds terrible I hope thats not an album cut. Its this one site that keeps leaking all of the Kingdom come cuts and they all sound bad. Thats fucked up cause I like Jay, I think Jim Jones said it best "come out of retirement to save yo team"

In all honesty, all that music label this, and no promo to this one stuff gives me a headache. No other MC in the history of hip hop has had a run like JAY and if I'm lying, name a nigga who can go blow for blow, album for album with Jay. Commercially and streetwise, dude puts it down. I can even admit that the tracks that I've heard aren't as crazy as I thought they would be but if there is one nigga in the game whom I can truct with my $15, its Jay. Yeah also about the South well i like South music that is meaningful examples T.I, Wayne,etc. But i dislike the fact that a lot of southern artists only release club tracks (about women shaking thier booties, men snapping fingers, leaning etc...) What I am saying is that it should not be only about the club some club music but not all club music

I have to admit that no these people did not do any albums better than their first. But I will fight you on the Nas Issue, I think It was Written was a classic album lets also remember Illmatic only had 10 songs on it and Halftime was had been done and was added because Large profesor wanted it on there Nas didn't even like it... But I think it was dope. Like XBK Dude said, Jay has held it down for my home for Really 7 winters, but there are so many Jay clones that I'm tired of the real thing. I beleive this website reported along with other internet sites that when the ROOTS worked out a deal with defjam they signed to something called Defjam Left. It was a deal in which they were not offered a big contract because they just wanted to focus on the music. Hov said told the Roots dont come to me worryin about a radio track....he wanted to focus on putting out a solid album critically acclaimed album (which they did) and he executive produced that (which people seem to forget). Yall complain about the Roots album not being pushed but have you listened to it. Its hot no doubt but theres not one track on there I could see getting serious radio play...but on the other hand the thing about putting out good albums is that they consistently sale throughout the course of time....

The amount of ignorance in this post is ridiculous. Clearly most of the posters are fans that know very little about the music industry. Allow me to clarify a few things:
Jay is not the president of Def Jam, he is the president of Island/Def Jam which includes a host of non hiphop artists including Lionel Ritchie, Under the Influence of Giants, The Killers, Sum 41, and Melissa Etheridge all of which are pushing units. Jay is responsible for the entire IDJ roster not just Nas, LL, Meth, Ghost, The Roots, Ne-Yo, and everyone else under the hiphop/r&b umbrella.
Even if Jay decided to stay retired how is his reemergence as an artist stopping any of the above-mentioned artists from pushing units? It doesn’t and again shows the difference between fans and people in the know. The Roots will always be the best touring hiphop group of all time and being on Def Jam isn’t going to change that. If everybody puts out quality music then everybody should eat. But to blame Jay is insane when artists have managers, agents, publicists, ect all designed to raise the profile of the artist and subsequently help push units.

Jays direction of where hip hop should go might be different than all of ours but no matter what... selling records and bring positive attention to the artforn is very neccesary. Rather than get into who's overrated or not or Jay vs. Nas i'd like to address the business side of this that the blog actual mentions. First of all of Jay's promotion TV promotion isn't even handled via DefJam. He's co brand director for Budweiser's "Select" brand of beer. As such he's riding Budweiser's promotion of the beer to also promote his album. I've worked in media advertising for many years. DefJam couldn't afford to buy spots for rappers to air during the World Series c'mon people. Further, Jay's first single and video were hatched as a promotional tool (feature white icons Dale Earnheart and Danica Patrick) to generate interest and appease the demographic watching. To be flat out honest most of the songs I like from Jay are never commercial single and I hated Show me what you got, but I understand the logic. Take it from an MBA it's marketing genius. As for pushing NAS back, do you really think NAS would allow Jay-Z to simply give him a back seat because Jay felt like it? Think hard, there is a lot more at play here. NAS stands to win if JAY goes first with a weak album (futhering NAS's) claim that hiphop is dead. He's also never been about sales first, he just wants to be heard.

HE wasn't hired for that sole purpose but he does have a say in who is in charge or promotion, RIGHT? So indirectly he IS responsible for promotion. If the person who is in charge of promotion isn't doing a good job of promoting ALL of their act in a good way that will benefit the company he/she should be replaced by jay and/or L.A. Reid.

Label presidents among other things, are responsible for the overall project making sure budgets and deadlines are met, making sure communication stays consistent between legal, promotions, publicity, retail, etc.

Go to Interscope's site, you won't see Jimmy Iovine's (CEO) name anywhere on there and I doubt you can name the president of that label, same with Universal's you won't see Silvia Rhone's (President) name anywhere and I can go on and on. Now are you going to say they have no involvement in their labels simply because their names are not on a website?? The websites are for fans like you to find out more about the artists, you won't find one employee directory anywhere so your logic makes no sense.

i dont know about you but im from tha south..we played jay more than we played DIPSET. most of the radio stations over here play mostly luda and them other southern rappers and jay..aint no dipset over here. matter fact most of the DJ be clowning on them dipset niggaz..so i dont know bout you in H-Town but over here in Hotlanta we don't do DIPSET.

The rapper entered that VIP after it was completely occupied by 30 dudes - all affiliated. Well, some of the baller cats passed through and the rapper told them that they could not walk through his area, from what I have been told. "Everything just went crazy," the source said. Anyway, somebody touched somebody and the rapper reportedly got slapped by a dude 6' 3" or taller. People get thrown around and the fracas starts to get out of control. BUT, the owner of the club allegedly pulls out some heat and tells everybody get get out of dodge.
The rapper goes out the back and the others go out the front. Well, I heard that the rapper wanted to get back for that slap. He and his crew venture out front only to be met with AK-47's and other heavy artillery. They were smart and rolled out to live to not tell the tale.

's a 8 out of 10. The dude reminds me of Pac, not a lyricist or storyteller in the truest, but still very consistent and his flow andr regularity is sweet, but this is Hip Hop people.
