On the VH1 red carpet, when asked about femcees such as Foxy Brown and Lil' Kim and their vulgar, tasteless marketing strategies and sprite-can-disappear-in-my-mouth lyrics, Salt of Salt-N-Pepa had this to say:
"I definitely think there's room for women to be represented in a better light...There's a responsibility when it comes to the microphone. [As far as "Let's Talk About Sex"] We were talking about safe sex. There was a message in the music."

Salt's statement was valid, but at the same time, I didn't see that message while watching a man squirming between her legs in bed, and Pepa run soap suds on her body in a bathtub. If anyone remembers their 1993 En Vogue collabo "Whatta Man," then you remember the famous line "you so crazy...I think I'm gonna have your baby."
Nevertheless, the song was a banger, and a hit as well. But it was this song, and some of the lyrics in another one of their hits, "Shoop," that lightly contributed to the sexual image and daring swagger that would later reflect in the female MCs of today -- but with ten times the punch.
Salt-N-Pepa has to be the most influential female rap group that ever was. Somewhat -- if not heavily -- inspired by this, acts like KP & Envyi ("Swing My Way"), Foxy Brown and Lil' Kim entered the scene, as well as Remy Ma, Eve, Sole, Trina, Khia, Charli Baltimore and others -- all of whom had high hopes of acquiring the same amount of respect and success. However, disregarding any "responsibility with the microphone" brought the two famous Brooklyn nemesis success, but left them far from the realms of respect. At the same time, though, being a bum bird bitch with bright red weave and black lipstick was suddenly cute, doing about "five or six best friends" became cool, and demanding oral favors from a man became feminine and sensual.
Disastrous.
But to blame Salt-N-Pepa for this would be nonsensical. They paved the way for many females' success, and deserve to be honored as legends of the rap game. However, once a trend sets off, it almost always continues in a domino effect, landing harder with every fall.
Nowadays, the only females to hold key to "responsibility" is Jean Grae, but since she's not talking about taking backshots and whatnot, she gets no props. How backwards is that?

Taking lame shots & dissing our brothers who no longer do things that bring down our communities won't make people pick up her cd. Enuff scapegoats already!!! This doesn't have jack to do with Salt'n'Pepa!!!!

I peeped Jean Grae at a show in Norfolk and she was the truth...like Talib said she is the hottest female mc out right now..I'd like to hear her and Remy Ma go at it.
But ummm yeah Salt just put her foot in her @$$ with that comment cuz they was all about sex, but come back and say their music had a message and everybody else now doesn't.
Damn...
That pic of Salt-N-Pepa really brought back memories. The last I heard of Spinderella, was that she is now hosting a morning radio show. Pepa was doing episodes on HBO's dramatic (turned comedic) show OZ. It's amazing how she (and her juicy titties) have grown since they began.
I have no clue as to what the fuck happened to Salt. But Reckless (for once) I have to agree with you that SNP are pioneers and legends as femcees.
It's about time that you bought up a topic worth talking about. I was beginning to think that this was Sohh LeftCoast.
One big problem wit pop oriented female emcees is that they all beefin' with each other...Its only a handful of known female emcees in the game and almost every one of them gotta beef with the other...You know how hot a collab would be wit Eve, Foxy, and Kim they would shut the game down...but nah they stay divided...im definitey not feelin that...
P.S. Shout out to Missy Elliot who never got into that nonsense

There are too many female emcees out there that aren't sexually oriented to have them ignored in your blog. Lauren Hill, Rah Digga, Da Brat, Missy and countless independents.

You have to be the same dumb fuck from yesterday messing up the blog.
What up yall?
I dont know what happened to Pep but last I heard, Salt had a studio in her basement and was working on some new stuff.
I still think there is a huge difference between the type of shit Salt-N-Pepa was doing and the type of shit a lotta female emcees today are doing. There is a thin line between sexy and raunchy and it seems not many female emcees know how to straddle it (no pun intended).
You never saw Salt or Pep, or Spin for that matter, as hoochies. Most female hip hop artists back then were tryna emulate the guys in the game. I would say they were some of the first women of hip hop to make it okay to be sexy and feminine. The ones out here today just wilding. But people respond to it, so I guess whatever works.

^^^^^^^^^^
I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you on Da Brat. She is very sexually oriented and alot of her lyrics are raunchy and filled with sexually explicit contingents. However the rest of your list is good with me.....and don't 4get about Mary J. she's a rapper now they call her Brook Lynn
I respect Salt n Pepa as pioneers but sexually charged lyrics is not a gender issue in hip hop. It's an issue with hip hop in general. Male and female rappers touch on sex in their rhymes, so it's not one sided. The certainly did not start that with Shoop and no Whatta Man, that was them expressing their sexual attraction for the opposite sex, not putting their sexual practices on blast like most of these artists do today.
I don't have respect for females who use that as a gimmick, i.e. Trina, Jacci-O, they have ZERO lyrical ability and use sex as a means to TRY to sell records and as we all know, they haven't quit mastered it.
Lil Kim was the first IMO, to come out raunchy with Hardcore, she mixed sex with tight lyrics that many say, were handed down from Big, who knows?
Hip hop in general is overtly sexual at this point and it's just a sign o' the times.
Well I'm glad Reckless said it before I did. Lil Kim and Foxy Brown always claimed that they were the ones that originated female rappers dressing feminine and talking about sex but it was Salt n' Peppa all along not them.
I think Salt had the right to make the statement above...there's a difference between sexy lyrics and raunchy/trashy lyrics. We all know who originated both, however I still give props to Lil Kim b/c she was the 1st to start the sexy, say what's on your mind, gutter lyrics...not afraid 2 step out of the box, so she gets 2 thumbs up for courage...
Damn I'm missing Salt & Pep though...
*what up peeps*

I wasnt even speaking on the sexuality in their lyircs and persona...I was just discussing the fact that many of the popular ones squabble amongst each other...and its not enough of them to beef like that over nothin...they need to work together more so they all have success.
Salt and Pep challenged the guys.
They did songs like Tramp- they were about uplifting the female but yes they were also sexy with it and their lyrics were sexy... but it was different. Nowadays a female rapper could never dis men like that and expect airplay (although it's ok for the fellas to dis women all day long)
U always got the feeling they were in control- most female rappers nowadays are like the only chick in a crew of guys- so the dynamics have changed.
Grew up on them- they are missed! I thought that Salt was born again and a preacher- I'm sure that's what I heard last.....
My bad for shouting out the South like that...I should of said " She's better than 95% of the New South "....Thats better.
TAH IN THE PLACE 2 B!
=TAH=
Female Emcees should be rated on lyrical quality alone. But since alot femcees don't write their own lyrics it's kind of hard to rate any of them, Let alone take most of them seriously.
Don't get me wrong I know Rah Digga been spitting real shit for years, but if I ask the average female if they like her, they say who's that? Jean Grea is another talented female who doesn't really on her body to be noticed. But will the corporate monster get behind her and support her? My guess is no. With non-substance spitters like Remy Ma and Shawwna always on t.v., where does the little girl who wants to be a rapper have to set the bar.
Pretty fuckin low.

Jean Grae Is a MESS!!! That bitch is GARBAGE like hefty sinch sacks.
The Public has spoken!
Where are the beautiful ladies? Talk to me.
Good Morning to the the real....
I agree with Dig's comments, whis is as follow: (There is a thin line between sexy and raunchy and it seems not many female emcees know how to straddle it (no pun intended).
You never saw Salt or Pep, or Spin for that matter, as hoochies.)
_________
Salt, Pepa and Spindarella had a perfect blend of being sassy and having lyrics that complimented their sassiness. They came off as real sistas who were just pushing the envelope for the purpose peaking the male's interest.
Kim and Fox and the rest of the other female MC's at the time really came out and just showed U their cat; straight up. At first I actually thought it was a good Hip Hop look for Kim to do it b/c it was so much over the top that it was almost unique. However once the raunchy female MC became the norm it was an awful look for Black women. There was no variety in the female emcee image.
Once Lauryn Hill became the prominent lady of hip hop I did back flips because she gave us an image that was needed for females in Hip Hop.
I see Remy Ma who is a good MC going with this same image and she does need it. I mean she doesn't give me thoughts of sex with her..I don't know what her image should be but sex shit doesn't work for me.
I wish we couild go back to the Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill, Monie Love and Salt and Pepper image for females. I really miss the variety in the Female MC's image.
Is Dig a female?
Yes, Dig is a female....
I'm looking for love.
Tell her that a real man wants to talk to her.

XBK:
What's good Family. The stans drove me absolutely crazy yesterday.
I will never sign on here again when the H.S. kids are out of school.
Are we being a little hipocritical here?
Seriously
SNP
We're no saints by any means of the word!
Salt N Pepa whom I like alot and respect
but they were the reason we have Lil Kim, Foxy, Tina, Jackie O ETC.
I ain't mad at em but come on
they never dropped a hot 16bars, ever!
They were around the way girls that had no qualms talking about sex. And they did it in a era where everyone was on their pro-black sht.
Their first single was Push it. That sht still sounds like a porno! I remember radio stations scared to play it.
Please lets not talk about SNP they same way we talk about Queen Latifah, Roxanne Shante & Mclyte
They wore the Pum Pums, the spandex, the tight cut off clothes. My favorite part of the Whatta man video is when Peppa opens her legs in the tub and BET won't even play that version. They pioneered Lil Kim and Foxy and if they came out around the same time as Foxy and Lil Kim, they're content would be just as raunchy, trust. Every sexual female artist out now is a evolution of SNP.
I saw Pepa on the Serial Life and god bless her soul but she put a whole banana in her mouth and down her throat without scaving it!(side note treach your fk'd up shoulda kept that one)
There's not one thing any of these new artist are doing that they wouldn't. Only that they were more restricted because they were the first to do it.
My point is if you have a beef wit Kim and Foxy and trina then you also have one with SNP
Wuttup world???
I came to the conclusion this morning we should fire a nuclear missile at North Korea and land it in a mountain range there... just to show em' what we could do if they don't stop jerkin' us around... any takers???
What up BigUp? I agree with you too. When Kim first came out, it did seem refreshing. You was like "oh shit! did she just say...?" Then everybody and their mama came that way (again, no pun intended, LOL) and all the actual lyrics went to shit. But hey, thats true for hip hop as a whole right now. Speaking for self, Im over it. Im bout to go cop some Keith Urban, LOL.
Does anybody else think that LL Cool J looks really good with his shirt off? I mean I'm not gay or anything like that, I was just asking. I always see him pour that water all over his chest. His chest is so shiny. I am not gay. Speak on it fam.
^^^^^^^^^^^^
The stans are back.....RETREAT!
That was NOT me. I prefer 50 Cent's chest. I am not gay.
Salt and Pepa occasionally did the sexy clothes in their videos, but the did the gangsta boo attire of the early 90s just as much. You know, short shirt and big azz pants with some Tims. Foxy and Lil Kim are not their only beneficiaries. Aliyah and Ciara have similar style even though they were/are going against the grain of today.
In any event of course Salt N Pepa had to get grimey with the lyrics every now and then. They are rappers, but they put out more socially responsible songs than anyone I can think of and had hits with them. I wish more female rappers would follow in their footsteps. No one is going platinum with the current ghetto hoochie formula. Maybe they should try something new.
what up dig? what up slim? what up n-site?

CHORUS:
My tea's gone cold, I'm wondering why I got out of bed
at all
the morning rain clouds up my window and I can't see

And even if I could it'd all be grey, but your picture
on my wall
it reminds me that it's not so bad, it's not so bad
My tea's gone cold,I'm wondering why I got out of bed
at all
the morning rain clouds up my window and I can't see
at all
And even if I could it'd all be grey, but your picture
on my wall
it reminds me that it's not so bad, it's not so bad
VERSE 1:
Dear Slim, I wrote you but you still ain't callin'
I left my cell, my pager, and my home phone at the
bottom
I sent two letters back in autumn
You must not have got 'em
It probably was a problem at the post office or
somethin'
Sometimes I scribble addresses too sloppy when I jot
'em
But anyways, fuck it, what's been up man, how's your
daughter?
My girlfriend's pregnant too, I'm out to be a father
If I have a daughter, guess what I'm-a call her? I'm-a
name her Bonnie.
I read about your uncle Ronnie too, I'm sorry
I had a friend kill himself over some bitch who didn't
want him.
I know you probably hear this everyday, but I'm your
biggest fan.
I even got the underground shit that you did with
Scam.
I got a room full of your posters and your pictures,
man.
I like the shit you did with Ruckus too, that shit was
fat.
Anyways, I hope you get this man, hit me back, just to
chat
Truly yours, your biggest fan, this is Stan.
CHORUS:
My tea's gone cold,I'm wondering why I got out of bed

the morning rain clouds up my window and I can't see

And even if I could it'd all be grey, but your picture

it reminds me that it's not so bad, it's not so bad
VERSE 2:
Dear Slim, you still ain't called or wrote, I hope you
have the chance.
I ain't mad, I just think it's fucked up you don't
answer fans.
If you didn't want to talk to me outside your concert
You didn't have to
but you could have signed an autograph for Matthew.
That's my little brother, man. He's only 6 years old.
We waited in the blistering cold for you for 4 hours
and ya just said no.
That's pretty shitty man, you're like his fuckin' idol
He wants to be just like you man, he likes you more
than I do.
I ain't that mad, but I just don't like bein' lied to.
Remember when we met in Denver, you said if I write
you
You would write back. See, I'm just like you in a way.
I never knew my father neither.
He used to always cheat on my mom and beat her.
I can relate to what you're sayin' in your songs.
So when I have a shitty day, I drift away and put 'em
on.
Cause I don't really got shit else, so that shit helps
when I'm depressed.
I even got a tattoo with your name across the chest.
Sometimes I even cut myself to see how much it bleeds.
It's like adrenaline. The Pain is such a sudden rush
for me.
See, everything you say is real, and I respect you
'cause you tell it.
My girlfriend's jealous 'cause I talk about you 24/7.
But she don't know you like I know you, Slim, no one
does.
She don't know what it was like for people like us
growing up.
You've gotta call me man. I'll be the biggest fan
you'll ever lose.
Sincerely yours, Stan. PS: We should be together too.
CHORUS:

it reminds me that it's not so bad, it's not so bad
VERSE 3:
Dear Mr. "I'm too good to call or write my fans"
This'll be the last package I ever send your ass.
It's been six months and still no word. I don't
deserve it?
I know you got my last two letters, I wrote the
addresses on 'em perfect.
So this is my cassette I'm sending you. I hope you
hear it.
I'm in the car right now. I'm doing 90 on the freeway.
Hey Slim, "I drank a fifth of vodka, ya dare me to
drive?"
You know that song by Phil Collins from "The Air In
The Night"?
About that guy who could have saved that other guy
from drowning?
But didn't? Then Phil saw it all then at his show he
found him?
That's kinda how this is. You could have rescued me
from drowning.
Now it's too late. I'm on a thousand downers now, I'm
drowsy.
And all I wanted was a lousy letter or a call.
I hope you know I ripped all o' your pictures off the
wall.
I love you Slim, we could have been together. Think
about it.
You ruined it now, I hope you can't sleep and you
dream about it.
And when you dream, I hope you can't sleep and you
scream about it.
I hope your conscious eats at you and you can't
breathe without me.
See Slim, {screaming} shut up bitch, I'm trying to
talk
Hey Slim, that's my girlfriend screaming in the trunk.
But I didn't slit her throat, I just tied her up, see
I ain't like you.
'Cause if she suffocates, she'll suffer more, and then
she'll die too.
Well, gotta go, I'm almost at the bridge now.
Oh shit, I forgot, how am I supposed to send this shit
out?
{screeching tires, crashing sounds, car splashes into
the water}
CHORUS:
My tea's gone cold,I'm wondering why I got out of bed
at all
the morning rain clouds up my window and I can't see
at all
And even if I could it'd all be grey, but your picture

it reminds me that it's not so bad, it's not so bad
VERSE 4:
Dear Stan, I meant to write you sooner, but I've just
been busy.
You said your girlfriend's pregnant now, how far along
is she?
Look, I'm really flattered you would call your
daughter that.
And here's an autograph for your brother: I wrote it
on your Starter cap.
I'm sorry I didn't see you at the show, I must have
missed you.
Don't think I did that shit intentionally, just to
diss you.
And what's this shit you said about you like to cut
your wrists too?
I say that shit just clownin' dawg, c'mon, how fucked
up is you?
You got some issues, Stan, I think you need some
counselin'
To help your ass from bouncin' off the walls when you
get down some.
And what's this shit about us meant to be together?
That type of shit'll make me not want us to meet each
other.
I really think you and your girlfriend need each
other.
Or maybe you just need to treat her better.
I hope you get to read this letter.
I just hope it reaches you in time.
Before you hurt yourself, I think that you'd be doin'
just fine
If you'd relax a little. I'm glad that I inspire you,
but Stan
Why are you so mad? Try to understand that I do want
you as a fan.
I just don't want you to do some crazy shit.
I seen this one shit on the news a couple weeks ago
that made me sick.
Some dude was drunk and drove his car over a bridge
And had his girlfriend in the trunk and she was
pregnant with his kid
And in the car they found a tape but it didn't say who
it was to
Come to think about it...his name was...it was you.
