It's Bigger Than the Music: Nas Puts a Political Spin on the Phrase "Hip-Hop is Dead"

"All respect to all rappers on Def Jam, I love the label. Without disrespect, I'm about to be the craziest shit on Def Jam." --Nas, MTV News

NasNYC.jpg

His ability to back up this claim can be deemed, for the most part, undisputed. However, we're still waiting to see if the current "album release date," December 19th, will manage to stick (*crickets*).

The legendary Queensbridge MC -- who claims his marriage to Kelis was his second marriage, as he married hip-hop first -- had words for the DJs of today (who, unlike pioneers like Red Alert, make it too easy for garbage to sabotage the airwaves), and some words for inquiring minds wishing to know exactly what 'hip-hop is dead' really means.

He told MTV:

"Let's be real. DJs play a big responsibility of what hip-hop is doing. … At the end of the day, it's up to us to control and to own hip-hop. DJs need to challenge us rappers. They got so much power, they need to challenge us. We don't challenge DJs by making crazy shit enough.

"When I say 'hip-hop is dead,' basically America is dead. There is no political voice. Music is dead. B2K is not New Edition. Chris Brown is great, I love Chris Brown, we need that, but Bobby Brown sticks in my heart. Our way of thinking is dead, our commerce is dead. Everything in this society has been done. It's like a slingshot, where you throw the muthafucka back and it starts losing speed and is about to fall down. That's where we are as a country.

"I don't wanna lose nobody with this, but what I mean by 'hip-hop is dead' is we're at a vulnerable state. If we don't change, we gonna disappear like Rome. Let's break it down to a smaller situation. Hip-hop is Rome for the 'hood. I think hip-hop could help rebuild America, once hip-hoppers own hip-hop. … We are our own politicians, our own government, we have something to say. We're warriors. Soldiers."

When the 'hip-hop is dead' thing first hit the scene, I always thought he meant mainly the quality of music; I guess it's a lot deeper than that. That's real shit.

Thoughtful words coming from "the school dropout," who "never liked the shit from day one."

I feel Nas as well, real shit....

only thing i can't believe that nigga said , was of all R&B pioneers and stand-outs and shit, the nigga choose Bobby Brown as his real nigga of R&B shout out?! Bobby Brown was king of R&B for a fucking year...

second!! nas was right. they've stolen our culture and are making it their own. just pay attention next time you watch tv and see how many commercials have hip-hop music in the background and the product has nothing to do with hip-hop. take mcdonalds for instance. 10 years ago it was all ronald mcdonald. now they have people rapping about their favorite mcdonalds food (on radio) and playing basketball in commercials. look at domino's. on the brooklyn-style pizza commercial there's a shot of a brother at the ballpark who you can hear because he has his trunk open and his speakers blaring. how ridiculous. oh well, if we don't read between the lines hip-hop will never be powerful again. they were scared of it at first but now they're capitalizing off our culture. it always happens. just check the history of music. one.

You see Nas is the truest defination of a rapper/writer.
That Jim Jones needs to really shut his ignorant coon ass up.

Hip Hop is on its deathbed for sure but that's nothing new. The industry has run out of gimmicks and ways to mask it. No bought scans, spins or great white savior can extend the lifespan. Hip hop died when old ass men failed to make way for fresh blood. Nas admits to being 33 which could mean just that or older in an industry where everything is a fucking lie. If he truly loved the culture he would've stop clogging the lane years ago. For all you old farts who'll take issue with that perspective know this - hip hop originated as music made by kids for kids.

MC Hammer was considered too old to rap at 27 while Kane, KRS and damn near everyone before Hammer were pretty much done by their mid 20's. That's a fact. Nowadays, rappers don't get deals till 27.

The trend of old rappers from places like LA, Miami and damn near everywhere outside of the tri-state started the process. With these old ass ringers came very mature, aggressive, explicit subject matter and the road to where we now stand was set. I'm talking about people who had to wait for adulthood to become cool kids.

In attempts to keep up and remain relevant NY followed suit and used superior vocabulary and talent to further advance the foolishness. Now they say Hip Hop is dead and lovers of Black people, culture and arts everywhere say good riddance!

Whats up to the usuals, long time... Odhis, X-clusive, I've always said Hip-Hop ain't dead and I have to take Nas' side on this.

The people who are Hip-Hop, who are responsible for putting it out there, have to keep the standard up. That ish that they are passing at our noses just isn't what we want to be putting out there.

I saw The Roots on 'Rap City: The Pale Imitation' yesterday and Black Thought kept saying that its already three times platinum.

That statement should've been factual, not sarcastic, not ironic, just the facts. He made light of it, but when will that be the truth.

And don't tell me 'nobody wanna hear the Roots' , Game Theory is that ish that i'm talking about.

OK, I'm back, OK, I'm back...

WHY SHOULD WE LISTEN TO NAS OUTTA ALL THE RAPPERS TELLING US HIP HOP IS DEAD?
WE DONT CARE ABOUT IT AT ALL NAS HAS BEEN OUTTA TOUCH FOR SOME YEARS..THE DJ'S ARE THE ONES WHO PLAYED YOUR SHIT WHEN U WAS THUGGED OUT AND BLACK GIRL LOST...NIGGAZ KILL ME THINKING WHAT THEY THINK SHOULD STAND IN MUSIC..NIGGA SHUT UP ITS GOOD TO SEE THE OTHER REGIONS HAD TO GROW AND DO IT THEMSELVES BECAUSE THOSE SAME DJ'S AND RADIO STATIONS IN NEW YORK WASNT SHOWING LOVE..AND TO SAY CATS MUSIC IS MICROWAVE IS COCKY COMING FROM A NIGGA WHO DOESNT GO PLAT AND IS KNOWN MORE FOR ETHER THAN 1 MIC...IF HOV DIDNT MAKE TAKEOVER WOULD NAS BE WORTH 3MIL?WOULD NAS VOICE STILL MATTER?SOHH WE HAD A BLOG YESTERDAY ABOUT CATS THAT ARE OLD AND OUTTA TOUCH..THIS NIGGA SHOULDVE BEEN 1# AND IF HIP HOP IS DEAD AINT A CLASSIC NA SLP WILL COME WHEN HE'S ABOUT 37..AND REALLY OUTTA TOUCH..NIGGA NEED TO HELP KELIS MOVE SOME UNITS AND STOP HATING ON THE GAME RIGHT NOW...WHERE IS 50 WHEN YOU NEED HIM TO SHUT THIS NIGGA UP!!!!

This nigga bitin my style son....
I posted this shit up yesterday.
Anyway.... " NAS IS COMING".......

NaS is the truth!

Nas Still has a voice... yeah he fell off and for a minute but sometimes when your great at something you go in cruise control, like he did for a few albums.. yeah Hov woke him up but a lion is a lion, sleeping or prowling he will fuck you up... Damn even Jordan dropped 33 a game but saved his 50 point games for when Nigga got cocky and started talking that "i can stop him" shit... thats life...

Posted by: HATER at October 12, 2006 07:02 AM

Now thats some motherfucking hate for ya...
I hardly agree but goddamn that some good hate...

IF YOU GOT HATE IN YOUR HEART LET IT OUT NIGGA

but....

Other than that you sound like a fucking idiot.Dudes like Nas,Jay,Pac,Face,BIG,Snoop are timeless. They put shit out 10 years ago that would smash anything out now. Nas has never made music to be popular and sell records and he still manages to be at the forefront of this shit. So you can Lean and Rock your Laffy Taffy ass to death while we get ready for Game,Jay and Nas.

That's right, Nas is right. I don't know what happened. But it is dead. I don't get the same feelin i did when i heard Rae, Pac, or Big. I had to put in my Ready to die shit last night just to get a taste of what i used to feel. I love my south artists. But what's goin on? And dat kid talkin about where is 50 when u need him!? What are you serious. His last album should be used for holdin blunt guts.

Hip Hop was never dead......
You see hip hop everywhere. The music may have suffered a bit but it was at the expense of the culture expanding. Advertisers are eating hip hop up and hip hop artist are making more money than ever due to them expanding their business ventures. Its gonna get watered down due to expansion but there is never a shortage of good hip hop.We had our "Afros" and Biz Markies also. We had our fill of gimmicks with ONYX and GRAVEDIGGAZ. We set off the fucking "running man" and the "Roger Rabbit" so why cry now that the south is doing their thing ? Let them niggaz eat

^ that man is a wise man smartest shit i read all week i co-sign 100 percent hip hop expanding so much
but real talk we probably would not hear from nas if jay didnt call him out or sign that nigga jimmy is right nas is a hypocrit or however you spell it

nas is one of my fav rappers cause he can speak the truth , he can spit hardcore, gansta, pop, and club.and be deep,he can do more than one style at the sametime be true, but if you dident understand what nas meant when he said hip hop is dead hes talking about all the beefs, all the djs that get payola to play wack songs ,and the wrong rich dudes in hip hop makeing poor rappers do songs they dont wanna do for money, once we get rid of all of that hip hop will be alive.like i was talking about yesterday these recond labels are finding poor people that are black weather they can rap good or not they sign them write something down for them do rap about and million clubs buy the wack dance songs, its ok to make dance songs but atlest make good ones with taste like how biggie, fablous, and jay z does, not no taffy taffy, chickn noddel soup , or that wack ass shoulder lean song.cause theirs like a million clubs out their and you no in clubs they will play anything to make people` dance, fans ant really buying dat its the clubs, but like i said yesterday im 28 and these 17 year olds are finnally learning that that laffy taffy shyt is wack and thats not how you rap, thats vanallia ice shyt rite their, few kids are learning the truth here and their and in 2 years it will be world wide, and if they try to lie to kids that are younger than that those kids that are 17 will teach them ,hip hop is dead till dec.oh and nigaz ant haten on the south cause their from the south ,were up set cause 80 percent of them is fucking wack as fuck,we all no their wack rappers in every coast the the south tops the wackest out of all,hip hop is dead till dec, all you snaping ,or gay pop fans go hide in the corner ,real hip hop is back and the wack labels that promote that wack shyt are catching fire from hip hop.1

As long as folks make QUALITY music, people will support it.....be it record store or BOOTLEG.

I agree with 90% of what Nas said. I will add that as a BLACK man in America, FUCK music. We're sitting here claiming that Hip Hop is dead; screw that. Half the ABORTIONS in this country are of male Black babies. (They count Latino babies as white.) There are more Black women than Black men here in the States. The female body knows exactly what society needs. The need is to balance out the sexes. But, through legalized ABORTION, Black females are quick to take innocent life. Black females are the MAJORITY "benefactors" of late-term ABORTIONS. Meaning, more times than none, the Black female knows that she's having a male BLACK baby.

Most of us call certain politicians the "Devil". I say that people who willingly and proudly kill unborn children the Devil.

So, keep dancing. Keep them hands up because obviously we STILL DON'T CARE.

New Music
"Touch Da Ceiling"

From: I.W.

New Album/Mixtape coming soon

Nas has never made music to be popular and sell records and he still manages to be at the forefront of this shit
^^^^^i dont wanna take anything away from the topic BUT didnt nas have a single on the charlie's angels soundtrack talking about "how a should girl can work it like that,be fly, something about her jeans etc"??its just that the commercial route never really worked for him.he just didnt have the right swagger, image, background(past)

and another thing you dont have to make a full album with dance songs or pop songs to sell, look at eminem,2pac,wu tang, game, nigaz like dat they sold millions of records its all about how you promote your self you can make the most hardcore shyt in the world if you promote your self good people will notice you,its ok to make 3 or 4 pop songs for an album but dont make it all pop or wack and call it rap cause its not ,make it at least 70 percent hip hop thats if you feel you have to do a few pop songs to sell, like i said people are catching on to that wack shyt people are knowing now ,thats why ti was the only platim rapper so far this year, but i think a lot of rappers will change that in the 4th quater, let pop be pop, let rap be rap, let r and b be r and b, let rock be rock, you wanna mix it around sometimes then its ok once inwhile but dont make a hambuger and call it tuna fish,no what im saying, listen we ant mad at the south , we ant mad at people going platium were all mad at the wack songs that are out, then you have people saying oh if you dont like it turn off the tv or turn off the radio, wel you se why should we have to turn that off , it shouldent have to come to that, if you like hip hop you watch the hip hip video channel or radio station why the fuck should we turn off something, that were apart of.real hip hop is back and all them sorry ass killers of hip hop are being laugh at.. the real shyt is first and the wack shyt is out of style ..

and another thing you dont have to make a full album with dance songs or pop songs to sell, look at eminem,2pac,wu tang, game, nigaz like dat they sold millions of records its all about how you promote your self you can make the most hardcore shyt in the world if you promote your self good people will notice you,its ok to make 3 or 4 pop songs for an album but dont make it all pop or wack and call it rap cause its not
all those people had some image that a lot of people found very fascinating.

Why are black people from the hood so damn negative?

Why are black people from the hood so mean?

Why are black people from the hood so ignorant?

Why are black people from the hood so hateful?

Why are black people from the hood so eager to rob, kill, or sell drugs?

Why do black people from the hood promote violence?

Why do black people from the hood always blame other people for their short comings?

Why do black people from the drop out of school?

Why do black people from the hood support doing wrong?

Why are black people from the hood so eager to destroy their own race?

How come black people from the hood won't except Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior?

PLEASE ANSWER

yea and the image is called skillz.not laffy taffy faffy paffy caffy staffy..

@ ihadnochoice

Nigga makin sense.

Hip-hop aint dead, the culture, slang, and fasion couldn't be more alive. U got 50 yr old polititians on CNN calling someone a "hater".not to mention how big it is overseas. i spent 2 years in japan and hiphop is huge there.

Rap music is just suffering cause label heads water the hard stuff down so that it feels less threating to people outside hiphop culture. They need 16yr old becky from malibu to buy the blackeye peas and chingy.

All Nas is sayin, is what chuck d and krs-1 been sayin for a long time and that is there is so much that hiphop has the power to do, but we not using it right.

But no, hip-hop aint dead. just look at current pop culture.

hip hop is dead till dec.if you disagree your eaither working for a label that trys to get money off of wack shyt or some one who nos nothing about real hip hop, just rember ,1979 and under is old old school,1980 threw 1991 is old school ,1992 threw 2000 is middel school, 2001 threw 2006 is new school, but the middel school type shyt sounds more new than the new shyt , lot of these new rapers rap too simple with no skillz, their wont be no real new school till like 2010,hip hop is dead till dec.all these white labels makeing people that cant rap notice will all fall , and the real rappers will stand.and nas new album is gonna be fire, but this fire cant be put out, read that wack ass paul wall blog with him talking about rap is nothing its easy and any body can do it,well you se yea any body can rap , but not everybody can rap good people like paul wall are the laughing stock of hip hop,the real shyt is coming get used to it, if not go listen to children songs cause thats whats been playing for the last 4 songs, but now the kids are calling it wack, lol ha, but yea real hip hop is back fix your face.

Posted by: haha at October 12, 2006 08:14 AM

He has plenty of songs like that. I mean there is nothing wrong with having songsz like that becuase niggaz go to the clubs and get their bop on so why not rap about it ? Dudes holla at fly females so why not write about it ? Why does a nigga have to talk about shooting niggaz all day to get respect ? That shit is shallow and fake.

nas ain't fall off ya'll just stopped buying his shit if you a real fan you copped his shit even before stillmatic like Nastradamus,I Am. but alot niggas think just cause those ain't his most played albums then he fell off don't forget some of the best albums ain't mainstream

This some real ish. There is no real substance in music aside from the coke, crack substances. I really hope Nas backs up his claim as the craziest on Def Jam. I think the brother can

MAN WE GOT SOME HOTT ALBUMS LINED UP COMING OUT WE GOT NAS new ALBUM JAY Z NEW ALBUM,GAMES NEW ALBUM,DR DRES NEW ALBUM,EMINEM,SNOOP,REDMAN,WU TANGS FULL ALBUM,FAT JOE,PAPOOSE,AZ,THE LOX FULL ALBUM,JADAKISS,,STYLESP,HI TECK, YO THE NEXT FEW YEARS ARE GONNA BE HOTT IM HAPPY THOSE WACK SNAPING SONGS ARE GOING AWAY.

also to the cat talkin bout old men need to leave the rap game why is it we the only music genre to disrespect the niggas who came before us and don't say that you ain't disrespectin cause if you did respect them why not let the "old rappers" do they thing if they still wanna rap let them niggas do that they ain't takin no money off no young niggas plate. jay-z and nas ain't stealin no spotlight from nobody if you like they shit but it if you don't then.i'm sick of niggas actin like this shit is a sport it ain't a sport, music is your opinion on shit whether you like political shit or club bangin shit or gangsta shit whatever you like rap about that shit you can't ever get too old to have an opinion to have an idea

It's funny how people say "he's old" or hip hop is made for kids, There not letting younger artist shine. That has to be the dumbmest shit I ever heard. People in there 30's grew up on hip hop, as a matter fact alot of them saw the birth of hip hop. It was music they loved are you saying once in your 30's you can't like hip hop anymore? Man, that's ridiculuos. These young kids out here trying to get into the industry saying "These older artist are not letting us shine" That's an excuse only people who don't have the motivation have excuses. When Jay, Nas stepped on the scene where they crying about "Oh Big Daddy Kane or Rakim won't let us shine of when NWA stepped on the scene" Oh Ice T won't let us shine. No, They stepped on the scene and came at it hard. That's the problem with the younger generation they don't know how to put work in anymore, they want everything handed to them on a platter. Sound like a bunch of spoiled children. Get your grind on, come and take it. For the record Jay-Z "Old ass" is about push some serious units. Oh Jay please don't hurt them! The young kids will be whinning "We can't come out cause Jay is selling records. Get over it older adults like to shake there ass too. Hell I'll be shaking, hip hoping my ass to my grave. Real Talk!

"when I speak, I need cemetary silence." Nas is right, music, collectively is watered down and we need a new direction. with him, game, and jigga dropping, (maybe raekwon?) fans will see what a real artist rap album sounds like.

do u honestly think that if pac(on death row) LOOKED like nelly he would have sold as much as he did or if 50 LOOKED like lupe fiasco he would have sold as much???????

So! Ask Jay if he cares about a little dude like Jim Jones.

Nas said exactly what we all are saying. At least he is in touch with the fans and what we are thinking. Now, they probably won't play his shit but he doesn't need it. He never got that much play on the radios down here in Chicago anyway. They played "If I ruled the world" and "Street Dreams" remix to death but he never got much shine on anything else. He doesn't need it. Nas is a true icon and he has easily made it into the pantheon with Cube, Dre, Jay, Big, Pac and all the other early 90's rappers. I really can't wait for him to drop now.

Peace to the real! My 2, I C U homie.

I feel where Nas is coming from, but I dont feel hip hop is dead I just think these record execs are putting artists out for the wrong reasons. In the old days, the A&R would sign a artist because they may have seen the potential and been willin to work with the artist, nowadays all it takes is a club banger to generate a buzz and labels are throwing deals at you. The only new artists that I listen to are Little Brother and Lupe Fiasco, but its sad because as dope as these artists are in the mainstream sense these guys are just underground artists who probably wont even go gold. Hip Hop is in a very vulnerable state and to some extent you can blame the DJ's cuz there the ones playing the same bullshit 5-6 times every hour which saturates the weak minded and the children giving them the impression that hip hop aint about actual talent but rather a catchy hook and a beat that everybody can dance too. Being from GA, Im dont mind those snap songs when Im in the club but the other 95% of my life thats Im not in the club I wanna hear that real shit, but everything moves in cycles, this is no different than when Puffy started the Jiggy era and everyone thought he was gonna ruin hip hop.

when I speak, I need cemetary silence." Nas is right, music, collectively is watered down and we need a new direction. with him, game, and jigga dropping, (maybe raekwon?) fans will see what a real artist rap album sounds like.

As far as Rae is concerned...that nigga is a wrap. Aftermath has been around for years and all they do is push niggaz shit back. Rakim ? Eve ? Game ? Truth Hurts ?
If it ain't 50 or Em, it ain't coming out on Aftermath. Their history speaks for itself.

Biggie and Big Pun were the fattest bastards in rap history and they are remembered as legends and they both are platinum(Biggie Multi-Platinum) selling artist. So how the hell can u only say image is everything...ni99a this ain't a fuckin' Sprint COMMERCIAL!

LMAO!

What up yall?

All I can say is I cant wait for the nas to drop. I dont care if its December or May, WHENEVER it hits the racks, its as good as copped.

Biggie and Big Pun were the fattest bastards in rap history and they are remembered as legends and they both are platinum(Biggie Multi-Platinum) selling artist. So how the hell can u only say image is everything...ni99a this ain't a fuckin' Sprint COMMERCIAL!

co-sign!

That is some stupid shit. Jay is the ugliest nigga around, Big even acknowledged being black and ugly. Diddy only has swagger, that's an unattractive dude(all according to my wife). Looks don't sell shit!

Hey peoples:-)

I hate to say it but...hiphop is dead or slowly dying...it's fucked up b/c that's what most of us grew up on but how do you think our parents felt when hiphop started...they were like wtf? b/c they grew up on motown classics that everybody loved, but it eventually died out...I understand the fuss but that's what happens every 20 years or so...a new genre of music is created & the previous is old news...

What's up Dig?

I'm laughing at some of these posts. I respect people's opinions but some of these people are extremely misguided.

@ihadno

I think Dre is going to put Rae out quickly. I think when he signed Rakim he was in a creative funk because of his own album. I also think there was still a disconnect between NY and Dre during that time also. He bought it back with "Big Bang" and I think he discovered a formula for nationwide fans. I mean "One Blood" is hot as hell. I'm holding out for that new "Cuban Linx" and I'm copping whether it's good or not. I'm a Rae stan!

Wud up Ernest, Xclusive BK Dude!

nas need to shut the f*ck up,what has he been doing all these years while his mates are making the cheddar, nigga need to make his money, why aint jay talking sh*t? cos they all rich, nas dont expect new generations to listen to his novel he calls verse, matter er fact nas is boring although am a fan.

What's up slim!

Nas hit the nail on the head. The radio is the reason for hip hop's dying state. I don't care though. I'm still going to buy Nas and Jay. I'm still going to get what I can for my whip. I don't think it's dead yet it just isn't what it used to be.

People are so focused on the current state of hip hop that they fail to see the current state of THE COUNTRY. The reason for the watered down music is because of this watered down society.

If music is a reflection of real life than what does the current music say about the current state of our lives?

It's not just hip hop that's feeling the wrath, it's in other genres as well. Rock, alternative, hell even country. I saw a country music video that was titled "Honkey Tonk Baddonka Donk" wtf?

This country is going to hell in a handbasket because of the smut, trash and filth that's being shoved down our throats everyday. If it's not the Girls Gone Wild commericials, it's the Levitra commericials that come on in between our favorite shows.

It's 2006 and you can now hear, bitch, ass, I even heard bullshit, on REGULAR TELEVISION. THIS IS THE PROBLEM WITH AMERICA, not just hip hop.

The music is a direct reflection of the type of images that we are protraying to our children and even to adults.

Everybody wants to be a gangsta, everybody wants to be a killer, everybody slang dope, everybody fucks four broads at once. It's sickening and we need to look at the bigger picture, not just at hip hop.

Morality, values and decency have been pushed to the side and THAT is the reason that you have so much nonsense floating over the airwaves. Peoples goals and priorities are intermingled in a sexually charged immoral mindstate.

But hey, that's just my opinion.

Whats good usuals its way 2 many to name.

I'm glad Reckless finally has a decent topic but I know the same stan thats been attacking the blog since Monday morning is lurking in the background so I'ma just fall back b4 he gets here. Everybody have a good day.

FUCK THE STANS!
BROOKLYN STAND UP!

@ Slim

Well said. You know what, I'll be playing the hip hop oldies in 20 years. Saying what you know about that? That's grown folk music. LOL

We need to just support each other.
Give a nigga some help fool.

Stop hating on niggas.
Then we can all come up.
