Big Ups: DJ Hi-Tek Knows "Where It Started At"

Whoever thought that a DJ straight out of the streets of Cincinnati, Ohio would make a comeback with a New York City joint?
Many know him from his collabo with Talib Kweli on Train of Thought [Reflection Eternal]. He played a major role in the making of Blackstar, and now he appears to be the backbone of New York City unity, bringing together the likes of Jadakiss, Papoose, and Kweli all onto one track, entitled "Where it Started at (NY)." This jumpoff is the lead single for his LP Hi-Teknology Vol 2, and I must say that the verses spit by all three represent the song title to the tenth. The video, which is primarily documentary-style footage of the streets of New York City, enhances the feel of the laid-back rhythm.
While on the subject of compilations, DJ Green Lantern represented well with last spring's On My New York Shit, which was a mixtape bestseller. But I think more New York City mixtape DJs -- especially popular jockeys such as Kool Kid, Kay Slay, and Clue -- can do a better job of bringing the heat in terms of unifying the New York City rap scene, something that is most definitely not present in hip-hop.
We are in a totally different era in rap's age, so it would be a miracle for Clue to bring home another platinum plaque for a compilation disc. This is evident in the try-and-fail effort of Kay Slay and Greg Street's The Champions: North Meets the South. However, with the success of Green Lantern and a slew of other DJs moving underground units like hot cakes, it is apparent that the streets devour mixtapes like roaches in a kitchen; the idea of a well-put together compilation isn't at all far fetched.
Not only do I give Tek his props for making yet another much anticipated appearance, I appreciate the new joint, and look forward to his contribution on other projects for real New York City MCs. Someone outside of the box had to take the initiative.
hi tek is up there w/ the best hiphop producers. his work w/ Cormega is some of my favorite from him. i think hi tek is talib's back bone. not that talib cann't make a good album on his own, Tek and him just have that chemistry that is hard to find between 2 musicians.
You know what, i'm sick of NY sayin oh, it started here. We know that, i think everybody knows where it started. NY is so disrestful to the south and don't wanna respect our movement. It's our turn. Ya'll had years of shine. All this compalinin. Get the fuck over it! IT don't end there, and we are goin to continue to knock em' out. Stop hatin! And Hi tech you not even from NY baby.

This weekend I had the pleasure of seeing A Tribe Called Quest in concert. It took me back to a time where New York was RUNNING hip hop. When good music was all the mattered. First of all thank you for doing a blog on someone who doesn't get the respect they deserve.
To:Shay..unfortunately the others are correct you came to a blog about ny to talk smack. Maybe if some of the south artists actually would say the fact that we birthed and not act like they discovered something new then perhaps there would be no issues..yet that's for another blog.
On the real.. Hi-Tek is very underrated and for those of us lucky enough to have discovered his talents early on in his career (pre-rawkus and that whole fiasco) this guy has only gotten sharper and sharper with his skills. I'm proud to be a hi-tek fan. Regarding him unifying the ny hip hop scene.. we've speculated before that it would take a neutral voice to come in and knock some sense into us New york artists. I hope though that we can start that healing process and get back to the basics of the music..without the beefin' and hatin'.

Reckless unfortunately your topic is going to promote a fuck N.Y./Fuck the south vibe for most of the day.
I have divorced myself from the “Bring N.Y. Hip hop back†and have gotten re-married to a simple “bring Hip Hop back.†If real Hip Hop hit the scene again N.Y. has no choice but to sit at the table and be prominent players.
I liken the status of N.Y. Hip Hop and real Hip Hop in general to a man who is 30 years old and his 5ft 2 inches but wants to be 6ft 5 inches….at this point it’s not going to happen for him. Hip Hop is not going 2 sell anytime soon. I have accepted that.
There are only going to be 5 Hip Hop cats or so who will move numbers but that is it and personally I am o.k. with it at this point in time. I mean it is what it is. If N.Y. wants major success in terms of numbers all they have to do is put out that bubble gum bullshit that the radio stations across the country are playing and they will sell. One prominent New Yorker decided to abandon his hard core hip hop roots and became rich selling the public his pop gangsta “RAP†music. So the blue print for selling bullshit and getting rich has been already lady out for those who would like 2 sell out.
However, Hip Hop is alternative music and that the way it is. In Washington D.C. they have their on style of music they call “go-go.†It is a little unusual but I can’t lie as a college student I rocked it a few times…it’s actually not bad when mixed in with Hip Hop. Anyway, I say that to say to NY we are Hip Hop cats. There are a bunch of Hip Hop cats spread across the country and the world but not enough for real Hip Hop to be in the mainstream and sell large numbers….so I have accepted the status of the game and made my peace with it because at the end of the day; it is what it is.

You make some good points bruh. Why cant it just be, "Bring Hip Hop Back?" Instead of "Bring NY Back?" Thats what New Yorkers dont understand.
For over 20 years NYC has disrespected and looked down upon other regions and their style of music. So for over 20 years, New Yorkers have given the rest of the country this impression: " If didnt come from New York then its inferior." And thats not just with music, thats with everything.
So it kills me when I hear NY cats holla out, "We gotta bring New York back, son!" And then turn around and ask why they receive hate for that comment. You did it to yourself New York!!!! When are you going to realize that?
Maybe if you said, "We gotta bring Hip Hop back." rather than, "NY this and NY that." Then maybe the rest of the country will get behind YOU and the movement. Then (finally) we can see some change in the game. And start getting some good music.
But all this, "Bring NY Back" and "Im on my NY Shit" doesnt help at all people. It just adds to the drama of the region battle thats been brewing for years now.

Yeah I think we alienate ourselves when we say that however I do understand why New Yorkers say that because I use to say it all the time, 2. When people are saying that they are basically saying bring real Hip Hop back and since they are New Yorkers they have heard a certain style of music all their lives so it is just a natural thing for us 2 say. However, to me, Chicago is currently setting the tone for real Hip Hop but you also have Philly and some cats in the south and in the west and certainly the Midwest region.
So yeah; your point is well taken; it’s all about finding Real Hip Hop where ever it resides.

Prime Example, Busta Rhymes' album is top notch...it is locked in my cd player right now...but he hurt his sales from a marketing perspective with that "On my New York Shyt" talk all the time. It actually made me not buy his cd, but after I got the bootleg and peeped the quality of the album I felt like I would have gotten my money's worth if I had.
Everytime you put a track out in the public with a similar title it's gonna turn people against your movement because the initial perception is that you're shytin on everybody else. Peep the music scene and do the math, who else is puttin out songs like that?

Hip hop needs NY to be strong. A lot of the different styles were invented there and that true street grimey style comes from there. You all know I live in Chicago and we are repping true hip hop right now but it would not be the same without NY. We need the venacular in our ears, the beats and lines in our minds and the distinctive metaphorical vibe. Some of the lines spit by Jadakiss on that track were hot as hell and you wouldn't find those lines in any other region.
As for the south vs ny shit, dead it. It's old and unnecessary.
"But all this, "Bring NY Back" and "Im on my NY Shit" doesnt help at all people. It just adds to the drama of the region battle thats been brewing for years now."

The work place is a microcosm of our society as a whole. We tend to be too comfortable as long as the check is right. We don't trust our own people and we lean towards that white guy in charge to dictate policy. We complain about it but never do anything to change the situation. Some of us don't feel like we are good enough to be a policy maker. That's real talk. When a brother or sister steps up to be a leader in the workplace, we tend to hate on them. "She/He thinks they're so much better than us. I remember when he/she sat next to me. Or, I trained his/her ass, I can do his/her job better than he/she could any day". Well, heres my question, did you apply for the position? The biggest obstacle facing us in the workplace is our attitude. We should all seek to lead not follow.

I feel that it's easy to not feel a lot of what they do. Sharpton used to be a clown. I used to call him an ambulance chaser. Jesse is connected at a high level. Sharpton seems to have gotten himself together to a certain degree. I think he can be a real voice for our cause but he has to be taken seriously by "us" first. Jesse does things behind the scenes and the media has played a part in tearing him down to a degree. That thing he went thru with that illegitimate child a few years ago has made him look like a hypocrite to a lot of the devout, holier than thou, black folk. The fact that he has a catch phrase doesn't help either. Rainbow/Push is a great helper of the black community here in Chicago and he is the leader. I think Jesse and Al just need "us" to take them seriously.

No Surprise - Skin Tone Study Reveals Preference for Light-Skinned Employees

A controversial study on skin tone has revealed what many black folks have been whispering about for years: Light-skinned blacks are often more likely to be considered for jobs over dark-skinned blacks.
The University of Georgia’s unprecedented study indicates that dark-skinned blacks face a distinct disadvantage when applying for jobs, even if they have resumes superior to lighter-skinned black applicants.
Matthew Harrison, a doctoral student at the University of Georgia, recently presented his research at the 66th annual meeting of the Academy of Management in Atlanta.
"Our results indicate that there appears to be a skin tone preference in regards to job selection," Harrison said in a statement. "This finding is possibly due to the common belief that fair-skinned blacks probably have more similarities with whites than do dark-skinned blacks, which in turn makes whites feel more comfortable around them."
"I think what was most shocking to me was to find that dark-skinned black males with greater credentials were still recommended less -- or seen as less of a candidate -- than light-skinned blacks with worse credentials," Harrison told BlackAmericaWeb.com in an interview last week.
"I think it has a lot to do with the general comfort level that people have with dark-skinned blacks and light-skinned blacks," Harrison said. "The media depicts dark-skinned black men as violent and threatening."
Harrison said he was reminded of the controversial Time magazine cover that featured O.J. Simpson during his murder trial when the magazine darkened Simpson’s image to make him appear more menacing.
"The findings in this study are, tragically, not too surprising," Harrison said.
"We found that a light-skinned black male can have only a bachelor’s degree and typical work experience and still be preferred over a dark-skinned black male with an MBA and past managerial positions, simply because expectations of the light-skinned black male are much higher, and he doesn’t appear as ‘menacing’ as the darker-skinned male applicant," he said.

While there have been other studies of effects of "colorism," in American society, the university said, Harrison’s work is the first study designed specifically to examine how it operates in hiring and in the workplace.
In America especially, Harrison says, when people think of race or race relations, they commonly think of black and white. In fact, skin tone differences are responsible for increasing differences in perceptions within standard racially defined groups such as "blacks," he said.
Harrison, who is black, conducted a study that included 240 undergraduate students at the University of Georgia, some of whom participated in the study voluntarily, while others got class credit for their involvement.
Harrison told BlackAmericaWeb.com that many Americans have "general expectations" of dark-skinned blacks and light-skinned blacks.
For example, he said, if blacks were divided into two groups -- group one being factory workers and custodians, and group two being doctors, lawyers and politicians -- most people, he said, would assume group one are dark-skinned blacks and group two are light-skinned blacks.
Harrison said his study validated what black folks have discussed privately for years.
"I think most black people expect that light-skinned blacks would be preferred and hired over dark-skinned blacks," Harrison told BlackAmericaWeb.com.
A disproportionate number of females in the study (72 percent) was due to the high percentage of women majoring in psychology at UGA, according to the university.
The issue of intra-racial relationships among blacks appears to be a popular subject these days.
In Springfield, IL., The Capital City Courier, a black newspaper, recently published a story entitled "Light Skin Blacks vs. Dark Skin Blacks" written by Kim E. Gordon. The article explores the historical and sociological debate about issues relating to black and light black Americans.
"One of the aims of this newspaper is to talk about and raise issues on the items that we talk about in private but don't generally talk about in public," Michael Pittman, editor-in-chief of the Capital City Courier, told BlackNews.com.
"I continue to take the stance that if blacks as a community are going to overcome," he said, "we must be able to confront the issues that sometimes make us uncomfortable."
Meanwhile, Harrison said he was surprised that skin tone was more important than education when employers evaluate job applicants.
"Given the increasing number of biracial and multiracial Americans, more research similar to this study should be performed so that Americans can become more aware of the prevalence of color bias in our society," Harrison said. "The only way we are going to begin to combat some of the inequities that result due to the beliefs and ideologies that are associated with colorism is by becoming more aware of the prejudices we have regarding skin tone due to the images we are exposed to on a regular basis."
Harrison said he hopes his study will help put an end to age-old stereotypes.
"The more we challenge these images and our own belief systems," he said, "the greater the likelihood we will judge an individual by his or her actual merit rather than skin tone."

Things like being late back from lunch, though everyone is clearly salary and don't clock in and out. Or, simple things like using personal cell phones. I just take that extra precautionary step.

The old boys network is a major part of the black community. My son plays football for my community. Every year the same coaches trot out there and some of them don't know anything about football. A parent that I'm friends with is a certified football coach. He has attended numerous clinics and has a certificate to coach offensive/defensive line. He asked to join one of the lower level teams so that they could learn at an early age how to play the line. They declined to allow him in as a coach. But, they keep those same tired ass mofos and the teams lose. We criticize them at meetings and they continue on. Black folks can be very clique-ish at times. I don't have a point of reference on whites except for in the workplace.

Oh believe me, I was hesitant now. LOL. But it was the only company at the time that was trying to hire me. Im a Graphic Designer with no "in house" experience. So alot of companies wouldnt take a chance on me. But this one did and I'm thankful for it.
Yeah as u can imagine being a black owned business there are alot of hang ups. I dunno what it is, but black folks arent organized for shit! Theres also alot of gossip here. But I work in a office with 12 women and 2 dudes(including me). So u can imagine how petty it can get.
But one thing you cant take away from a black owned business (well atleast not this one), is that you really do feel like family here. Eventhough you got some people that you cant stand. The comfort level is very high. I guess its that whole, "being around your own people" type thing. I dunno.
But as far as work enviornemnt goes. (even with the gossip and petty ish) It does make you a little more comfotable being around black folks.

I was asked by a Mason in Cali when I lived there to take a look at his organization back in 1995. I recall when I lived in Ocala, Fla there were a lot of cats claiming to be Masons that I hung around. I declined the membership because a lot of the guys were drunks and drug abusers. I had a chance to do a little homework on the masons and what I've found to be true is, they stick together. The real masons don't talk about whether or not they are masons. They identify other masons by hand signs. What turned me off was the cultish nature of the organization and also by the actions of some of the guys associated with the group. Women hands down have more common sense. Men are much more savvy because we are not ruled by emotions. Women just seem to know when to be careful where we men really act on impulse. I tend to live on the fly where my wife is so much more in control. Emotionally I am definitely more stable. My wife is perpetually upset about this and that. I am her calming influence. She also slows me down when I'm ready to jump out there and just do something.

Well, I just opened up (physically) a boutique here in Tampa. This weekend, we went to an expo to spread the word about our grand opening. I must say, most of the vendors at the expo were women. Self proprietors. Handling their biz. I was happy, I must say. I think that the problem you may see with women and finance, may be the women you pick. Most women are given the money to pay bills in most homes across America.

I live in a middle class neighborhood now that I have my own place. Granted it is mixed with everyone, but mostly black. In a 4 block radius I think there are like 3 liquor stores (one drive thru.) 2 gas stations, a Churchs Chicken, a Popeyes Chicken, one Chini food joint, and a corner store where liquor stocks 75% of the shelves.
In my father's neighborhood... where it is mostly white. Matter of fact, we are one of 2 black families there... I think per comparable perimeter, there is one liquor store, a KFC, Walmart, CVS, Kmart, and Subway (eat fresh, lol.) Most healthy stuff is accessible.

I don't think people in general realize the power they have in controlling what stores can open up shop in our neighborhoods.
Liquor stores in ghetto's whether black, white Latino whatever, wouldn't prosper if people didn't buy the product. Liquor is in high demand in the hood, so you need one on every corner to supply everyone.
Now I live close to the richest county in the United States for Blacks, Prince George's County Maryland and you will see that all throughout, but you will also see a number of gated communities with homes that start at $600,000 and up.
What happens in the community is up to the people that live it in. If people don't give a fuck about where they live, then that will be the reflection. And I regret whoever made the comment regarding blacks not eating healthy. That's a big misconception, not all black people eat neckbones and pig feet everyday.

But to answer your question no, sugarland is not filled with wealthy blacks though there are an influx coming into all the suburbs which is good to see. It makes it diverse. I just re read what i wrote and sorry to stray off topic, but yes many of these cities are slowly getting a larger influx of minorities's with money not just black. It's good to see, (not to sound racist) but nobody minds when they move into neighborhoods because they are a hardworking individuals and blend in just find. Yes some of these cities are growing with a black pop. i.e. missouri city (a.k.e. MO City) on the southwest, and geographically i would say that would definatly affect sugarland as they are near each other. But sugarland would def. still be majority white i'd say as far as numbers go. I would say you would see that trend more on the southside than the northside, though that is just my personal opinion.

Yes I do. And not because of the brand name. Most of my clothes are dry clean only so when selecting clothes I need quality-made garments, garments who's material will not wither in the cleaning process. Now I've try to shop at lower priced stores and usually the clothes are made with cheap materials and therefore you wind up wearing it once and washing it and it's faded or ripped. But you don't have to shop at Saks or Bloomingdales all the time to find quality clothing, you can catch deals everywhere.

I LOVE clothes and shoes and I say whatever looks good "buy it", that's my motto, I have name brand but off shit also, and I makes nothing look cheap...you'd be surprised...but for a man, sadly they cant go the cheap route and still look as appealing....at least in my opinion...
