I remember when Dre back in the early 90's got into that "thug" life mentality. Dre grew up in Long Beach in a decent home. Ice Cube has never been to jail but his brother was some kind of "ghetto superstar". What happened to the two of them was Eazy E. He was a true thug in every sense of the word that saw a way to go "straight". Ice T was a hustler also that has found a way out of his mess. Jay Z by his accounts and even the ever controversial Curtis Jackson were also hustlers. My point is, a lot of these guys as so eloquently stated by Cic up top are nothing more than studio gangsters that have real gangsters in their camp.

I believe that as much as I revere Pac, he is responsible for a lot of this bullshit happening right now. Before the stans start attacking me, I'm not having that shit this morning. I think it's a legitimate starting point.

Does anyone agree with my assertion regarding Tupac birthing this culture of studio gangsters? By all accounts he started out that way but bought into thug life in his early 20's.

Feel free to attempt to ether me stans. The reals give me love and I'm sure will help me get over my Tupac angst.

I don't know if PAC is solely responsible for being a studio gangster. I was under the impression that he actually lived a lot of the things that he spoke of in his lyrics. To me, that is why most people could identify with him so. He spoke of not just popping off, but also of poverty, the system... I mean, there were so many different faces to him. The difference between he and Pac is, Ez was a true thug that used hip hop to turn legal. Pac, as illustrated by Mega, changed at some point. SK hit on it also and answered my question. The problem is, why you have deep thinkers that took the time to attempt to understand why they "feel" Pac's realness, you have kids like this Jr. Writer guy that are probably as Bigup put it, not participants but have seen a lot. That perceptability mixed with their grammatical talent led them to be able to express those things on wax.

My question is, is Pac's complicated nature responsible for these studio gangsters?

If so, should we still revere Pac as a revolutionary, or should we be upset for our future because of him?

I, as a lot of you, feel that he would have been that next black leader that we are still waiting on. His death is a cover up on a grand scale.

I do co-sign this. I believe we have to take it one step further and it revolves around the first question left out there by ihadno.

We have to shield our children from the negative construct of the media. We have no voice there, only front line news anchors and sports reporters. We have no decision makers that have the true power to show our kids something positive about our community. The media does have some blame in what is happening in our communities but so do single parent homes, poor influences outside of home and poor educational figureheads. If your child watches the news, which is supposed to be their for info, they usually see brothers killing, robbing or sound ignorant. This fosters mistrust which leads to boarded up windows, no kids outside playing and general disrespect towards adults. All of this plays out in the media and yes we have the responsibility to educate our children, but every child isn't going to have this luxury. We need to gain some kind of control over a media outlet and not rely on BET which is white controlled to give our kids a positive outlet.

People need to be able to separate entertainment from reality. A great deal of these artists are selling fake thug imagery and people who are not able to see what's real from what's made up are feeding into this fake macho bravado.

Guarantee that half of these "gangsta" artists never even travel to the "hood" or have ever let off a few rounds so IMO, you have to be able to separate the real from the fake, while also being able to hear a song and recognizing that the artist is telling a story, not speaking on actual events that they have participated in. There are just too many plastic thugs in the industry today, and well as long as people buy it and support, they will always be around, but it's up to the individual listner to make the determination of what's real and what isn't. But this is not an example of art imitating life, cause this ain't real life for these clowns.

But getting back to my statement about economical revolution, that is always the story. A design of people who have money have no reason for revolution because their economic state gives them that freedom for change. When you are broke.. you have to ask for change... when you have money... you make change without asking. We as black people are consumers. Family is extended to the whole race instead of their immediate family. Try to buy something from a Jew and see if you can do it. They only buy from each other and sell to each other. Niggaz will keep money in a stash box rather than let it sit in a CD account and let it gain interest. Run through a white neighborhood and count how many 'CHECK CASHING" spots there are. When is the last time anybody took a "finance and credit " course in school? The last thing they want is for the public (black and white) to get smart about credit because they make som much more money off of our ignorance to credit and finance. I think that in a capitolist state yes you do need money to be relevant but at the same time most people who can't live more than a month without a pay check would naturally be considered irrelevant making the people at the top of the economic scale the controllers of poor and rich. and I believe that's what is wrong with the establishment, the irrelevant don't have a voice so they aren't taken care of. What is a man.? Well if you look at it spiritually, we are not following the dictates of what a man is suppose to be and do. The scriptures say that man is supposed to have dominion on the earth. Itâ€™s not our fault because we have been trained and programmed to be this way; however itâ€™s our fault to choose to stay this way.

We must form an independent third party that will allow us to speak to those in power about economic renewal and urban renewal in the black communities. We must advocate the total destruction of educational system that is so deeply rooted and racism so that we can rebuild our fundamental concepts about who we are as people and the direction we should going in politically, socially, economically and spiritually. We must advocate and demand that the government address the deeply institutionally racist and systemic policies design to keep black people oppress.

I am sounding preachy so let me stop for now.

My premise though is that revolution is one of the mind; although blood will still be spilled and lives will still be lost. This will happen because those who profit from our oppression will seek to kill those who are advocated what I just stated.

Morals, values, self-respect start at home. If parents are not instilling the right things in their children, vicious cycles that have plagued our community will continue. Yes the government is to blame in some aspect, yes our community leaders are to blame in some aspect, but we need to make parents responsible for their kids actions. They need to expose their children to positive role models and not allow 50Cent and Lebron James to be people they aspire to be. I mean there is nothing wrong with being a rapper and nothing wrong with being a ball player, but there are thousands of other careers that they can aspire to. But in the hood, as people from the hood know, there is a certain element there that doesn't want better for themselves or don't know how to acheive a better quality of life, so that becomes a political/community issue and well how many black politicians are truly involved in their communities? This is a very complex problem that requires action on ALL LEVELS before we can even begin to think about a resolution.

@ihadno, blacks are far from the majority. We have more that have made it to some degree but the oppressor keeps changing the rules of the game.

I'm with Bigup, who I co-sign not just for it's content but also for the ability to express those thoughts so eloquently, in that we have to make our own rules. That's what blacks did in the 1920's which was arguably our greatest decade in terms of true independence.

These studio gangsters are an extension of a greater problem. The black man's need for assimilation, whether it be into a certain demographic or into a certain status in society. Anyone agree or disagree with that thought.

Pledge is strong and I believe we all have to give something. I'm willing to give my life in a literal and spiritual sense to the cause of my people. I do disagree with one thing you said Rocky in that this blog does help someone. Trust that all of those "stans" that have read this blog since we started the enlightened threads have been affected in some way. You can't help it. We all live the same struggle and it's real out here. I watch a lot of black leaders and I read somewhere this morning about blacks being the "meetingest people" in the world. We have to continue to push everyone within our influence to know where they have come from. That is our contribution. If you aren't a revolutionary mind then be an educated mind. We all can't fight the battle at the front but we can attack it where it starts. It starts in our minds and that should be extended to anyone that looks up to us and respects our opinion. What we can do in our community is remain informed, never sell out our beliefs and always continue to move forward. Economic strength is great but it must be diseminated properly.

You know, I made my little sisters watch Birth of A Nation. A movie that I wish that I had known of in my early years. They are 12 and 9, and live in this bubble that my father has created to "shield them" from the world- in order for them to remain innocent. I made them watch it after my 12 year old kept getting stupid points off on her homework. For silly ish like writing .865 instead of 0.865. She got like 5 points off for that. I tutor in math, so I didn't understand why she was bringing back such grades. I had to take it to the teacher (a white southern bell, she was.) I made her explain why she kept on taking off points that would otherwise have given my sis 100s across the board. She couldn't explain. She added the points back on before the marking period was over, so that my little sis could maintain her high average. I was so offended. I can't imagine how many other students (black ones) that she did this to. And, how many parents just accepted it at that. Because if I didn't catch it, my father wouldn't have. Anyhow. She (my sis) didn't know why I was so mad. That's why we had to have a little movie night. It was great for me to see them have such raw emotion to the subject matter. Then we discussed it afterwards. So, now they understand why I couldn't let the teacher get away with bumping one of the only straight "a" black students down a grade to a "b" or so.

Just last week Bigup dropped a thread of about 20 must read books and I copied the ones I hadn't read onto a pad. I'm greedy for knowledge so it was right up my alley. A lot of folks are worried about getting smashed so they jump in saying really stupid shit laced with sneak disses and cuss words in order to get noticed. I invite them all in and ask that they review their post for grammatical errors like left out words in their sentences. I don't care if they can't spell, I just want to be able to understand what they are writing so that I can respond. This blog helps. Notice how many non-dipset sucks posts we have today. I guarantee you that a lot of people are reading and thinking. Ask Reckless. I'm sure he knows how many are tuned in.

That is where community disconnect starts. Someone is always looking whether you believe it or not. It could be your friends son, someone younger than you that you hang with or someone that works with you that secretly admires you. You have to be careful in public, and not for the whites, but for the blacks that see you in your business casual attire and nice car. What you do or say in private is your business. Of course, the only way to keep it real is to live real, but you have to decide that on your own. Never pass the responsibility or make excuses like that one you just posted. I actually forced myself to go because I hate talking about it and not being about so I went in support but what is my motivation to return after that bullshit? In these times, where some parents have to have 2 jobs to make ends meet, or have to focus their business 89% of the day, it is hard to kep up with the kids. That is where the community comes in. I'm doing my part by helping to educate children that don't have that support system at home. And, I see that these kids want to learn. I wish I could help on a larger scale. Some of these kids don't even get a hot plate for dinner. They stay after tutoring and beg me to cook. It is a sad sight. But, it is what motivates me. I know that they will take from the experience and continue to progress. It's about getting them on the right path.

I think that any organization that is community centered and helps you better yourself is a good thing. All churches are not the sams so don't get it twisted. I raised to believe in God and the Bible - but my faith is mine and being an educated person I have some definite questions about the Bible b/c is manmade. But despite that my church has been my backbone for as long as I can remember. If I give money to my church and I know that it is going for the good of the community and the congregation then I do. I mean I give my money to these artist; theses execs; to the Falcons and Auburn Tigers so why would I know give it to an organization that is focused on the social welfare of my people. I can't turn my back on my church or my religion just b/c I have questions. It's cool to have questions don't paint all churches with such broad strokes.

But I understand what you are saying. And I try to vouch for my church whenever I can. I am not claiming that they are perfect but they do a lot for the community that I live in. I am on the scholarship committee in my church and we help kids find funding for school and if we can't we pay for at least 1 year of college for them. The church can be a powerful and postive place but it can be a place of evil just like the world. I just hate that extremist have hijacked God and religion to excuse their actions. I am a big beliver in the church and its power and I take church just like I take school. I am their to learn and to think critically not to be a pawn in a game.

I agree with some of what you say. But I think that people tend to be close minded when it comes to church. And I really do think people try to black sheep the church; I mean these are the same things that the church is accused of doing to people. But as a child of the south I know had it not been for churches being so progressive in thought there would be a lot of people not reading; not working; not doing anything but waiting on their time to come. I think that even back to 1492 the church was used to ordain people and that is not the intention.

I look at my Pastor just like I look at my Professors; he has been to school the study this book and I would like to hear his take on things about it. Not that I agree with everything in the bible but I don't think we can disregard some of the knowledge just b/c it is centered around religion.

I think we need to get past the point of people telling us what our church should be and how us church folk should act b/c I don't have to answer to any man on this earth. As long as my church and other churhces stay progressive I can support them with time and money.

I read about the 5 percenters (Shout out 2 my man Huey Freeman), the Nation of Islam; The Sunni and Shiite approaches to the Islamic Faith and the Black Israelites pratice and ever other faith tradition I can get my hands on, 2. I see all of them is important and valauble regardless if I am a follower or not.

So yeah; if it works for you; do it. I mean it appears to be working for you. You are educated, married (which is rare for young Black women, today) a mother and probably a home owner. You are active in your church and community. I would say that U R spiritually connected with a source greater than any one I know so; yeah just continue to do U.

For real - no lie - my preacher preached on this yesterday. If you get a chance get the bible and read Galatians 6;1-10.

His topic was "Self Examanation" - How all people should examine themselves before they can criticize other people. He said we have to be humble and remember that we are all flawed individuals and everyone has something that they do or have done that was not Godly. He said he thinks that Christians forget that we are all His children and no one is exempt from sin.

I use to go to the club and get home around 6am and be up in church by 9:30. I did not care what anybody thought of me b/c I knew at the end of the day I was in control of what I wanted to do. I think people think you have to be perfect to go to church but that is the farthest thing from the truth. I think if anything church taught me that I can do anything in life that I want to. And as long as I give back to my community and my brother/sister then my life would have more meaning than I could have every dreamed.

And if I die and find out their is no heaven I won't be mad b/c my life has been super fulfilled up to this point. But I do think that the Bible can be a dangerous thing dependent on who and how they interpret it. A lot of times the Bible is used to maipulate people to achieve a means that is self serving and not progressive.

I became very angry with the Christianity when I came in to knowledge of self. My anger was rooted in the fact that every time I spotted oppression' Christianity was locked arms with the oppression. I saw this all over the planet's history.

Now I am not talking about the teaching of the Jesus Christ because that as you know is different than Christianity. Christianity is a man made faith based shell game. I reject that shit to the fullest. I admire and respect the follower of Jesus Christ and Jesus' true message. Jesus' message is one that everyone should follow.
