I think it's relevant discussion. Kim and Fox can spit but they only seem to care about shock value. As far as what they look and dress like, that's not relevant to their impact in my mind. Let's face it, Lyte and Queen may have had industry respect but outside of that they seemed to be a "gimmick". To the real hip hoppers like myself, I respected their mc skills but even Lyte went to wearing makeup and less b-boy type gear. The Queen dropped them big clothes, started revealing more of her voluptuous, (in my mind)sexy nature. She never compromised herself in her lyrics but she subtly let us know thru dress and make up that she was sexy. Even S&P left the b-boy clothes and put on the makeup and bikinis. All Kim and Fox did was step up the game to get sales. Kind of like all these bubble gum rappers today.

Alot of people are saying Hip-Hop hasn't died but its just evolving. Like back in the day lyricism used to sell records now its just beats. And the same assertion can be drawn towards female MC's. Lyricism was what put your foot in the door and everything else was history. Now woman have to take of 95% of their clothes to even be considered getting a recording contract. Hip-Hop has been fused with the industry and the entertainment business and it seems like it is inseparable. And you know what they say about this business "Sex sells" so as long as Hip-Hop is for entertainment purposes ONLY! this disrepect for a womans body will continue to plague the music.

Notice I said entertainment ONLY bcuz alot of these South vs. North ni99as be on here bragging that they on top NY fell off, blah blah blah and they don't understand the true definition of Hip-Hop. Yes Hip-Hop was used as a tool of entertainment when it first started, however; it was also used to uplift the people, enlighten the blind, shed light on the injustices effecting the community, etc. etc. etc.

This is why artist must go independent...or have majority ownership and control of your product. Once we become our own boss we make the rules and we say what is acceptable and what is unacceptable. Variety in the music(snap, crunk, rap, freestyles, conscious-songs, remixes, maybe even hyphy)...if all these sub-genres can coexist equally then this would be more than acceptable it would be welcomed by not only New Yorkers but by every region. On the other hand force feeding consumers snap, crunk and pop all day and night saying this is what Hip-Hop ONLY! is, is highly unacceptable and it will not be tolerated.

I'm saying the same thing about this subject. All Kim and Fox did is the same thing women have been doing to get by for years. I stated yesterday that I compare female rappers to struggling, young college females or single moms back when there was less opportunity for female advancement. Those youngsters would go out to get a job and be subjected to sexual harrassment by potential employers and figure, I can just strip and get paid and every once in a while, let some dude that's papered up hit. Some call it a sellout, they call it survival. Then you have the mom with 3 kids and a deadbeat dad. She doesn't have time for a regular job but she's working with something that men admire. Enough assholes have come and gone in her life and left her with nothing. It may be hard to give up that gift but if it gets her paid, why not? I used to see it all the time. Women have to adjust and be strong to make it and it's different in the male-dominated world of hip hop.

Male or Female... if you don't write your own shit, you don't deserve to sell records. This ain't R&B. Hip Hop is based on the rappers expression and experience and we can't respect you rapping about somebody else's experiences. Unfortunately, ghost writing is at the forefront now of a lot of hip hop projects. I think it's all bullshit. Some of these "ghost writers" are trying to take other dude's shine. The reality is, rappers have had ghost writers for years.

I still feel like femcee'ng is a gimmick a lot of labels used to use to appeal to a broader audience. It turned out that some of them could spit but dudes weren't giving it any credibility. Latifah and Lyte were persistent. Copping their albums for me however, wasn't an option. I respect the differences btwn females and males and I can't honestly relate to the problems females face. I try to understand them and be sympathetic. But, I'm like that with everyone including different races. I find that as usual women are exploited on some level by these labels and even some of these rappers. I think the problem with being a female in Hip-Hop is who you have as influences. You think about it like, everyone who picked up the mic because of Run DMC, or BDK, or Kool G Rap, you can hear it in their music. All the women out there rapping now, a good part of them came up when there was a big focus on gangsta rap, and "Chicks, Cars, and Cristal". No women out there were really coming with any substance anymore, so what do you expect but a majority of women coming out talking about money, sex, etc.? Its a reflection of society. Women are objectified in hip hop so much now (not trying to diss, I'm just saying), so of course some women are going to try to flip that perception the best way they can.
