Kick Push: A Rising Corner Boy Phenomenon

No one would ever guess what Pharrell and Lupe Fiasco did to the 'hood.
Come around my way in Spanish Harlem where the George Washington or Metro North Houses flood the area, and you'll find the typical setting present in any barrio: Hazeheads loitering on the corners doing nothing, little lost children looking for something to get into, and stick-up kids waiting for nightfall. An everyday sight it is, but what's funny is that some people from all three of these groups--some practicing right in their project walkway-- have deaded their broke-down bikes and replaced them with skateboards.
I'm not saying that's a bad thing... it's just kind of weird to see. Pharrell actually said something like he wanted to encourage the idea of skateboarding within the black community. His vid for "Can I Have It Like That" reiterated this (standing next to the same kid who said in a magazine recently that he used to be called a corny "white boy" by the dudes in his ‘hood for skateboarding), then came Lupe Fiasco with the smash "Kick Push."
I'm pretty sure the 'hood-like visual that complimented the kids' 'boarding through the hood in "Kick Push" is what gave skateboarding a 'hood pass, ‘cause I never noticed it this much up until recently--yesterday really had me standing at the red light in wonder. As strange as it seems, the interest in the flat four-wheeler is definitely a growing trend on the block. Now if this is going on around my ‘hood, it has to be going on in other boroughs and 'hoods as well, unless Harlem is just being different again.
Niggas have always been skateboarding, but other than 19 year old punk rocker plugging it, skateboarding hasn't really had such a starring role in the songs and lifestyle of young prominent popular rappers.
I'm sure when ATL the Movie cam out, eveyone in Atlanta was visiting the rollerskating rink(correct me if i'm wrong), so even if you're seeing it more now, its just a fad for the summer. That Lupe will be a keeper.

Yo, i think it's kinda cool that mo black kids out there are getting into skateboarding.......coz in Africa we had the richer kids introducing that shit as early as '88....
The thing is since we all had our hoods juxtaposed, the rich kids would kick it with the po kids now n again...therefore they would teach each other different shit like firing slingshots for skating....
That shit was big for a while.....i broke my arm tryin some shit.......now it's dead......

I co sign the 80's there was much skateboarding. I guess these day's people feel skateboarding isn't thug enough. Well that's straight up stupid. Man I couldn't even count when I lived up north how many kids I saw on those motorized skateboards. It's better they skate then to do stupid shit which get's them in trouble. Kids who have hobbies more then likly stay out of trouble.

When I was younger a lot of guys around my way skateboarded.
So it was just natural that when the
Bratz Dolls made 1 (yeah the Bratz dollz)
I purchased one 4 my daughter.
This was pre-lupe fiasco and she got kidded by her cousin of being white.
I shut that down by educating her little cousin on what's really hood and what's not
but I really was surprised that he said that.
Anyway,
Nowadays I really only see skateboarding out her in the burbs but
it's refreshing 2 know that our children don't have 2 feel they can't board because the sport belongs 2 some1 else

It's sad that people haven't noticed how long minorities have been skateboarding, bmxing, or blading.
I can atleast speak for myself, and that I've been doing this shit since 1982, when skateboarding made it to the eastcoast after being birth on the west. After I saw movies like RAD and Thrashin, it blew my mind and I've been bmxing/skateboarding ever since.
Pharrell didn't really do shit for skateboarding culture besides make it flashy and gaudy. He added a fashion element to it and that's not what skateboarding is about. It's about being dirty, cutting chains and skating all day, everyday, legally or illegally.
Pharrell's main goal is the capitalize off the culture. He's not worried about enlightening the hood on skateboarding. Lupe is telling some of the struggles that most skaters go through, because most hardcore skaters come from broken homes and have a real shitty life.

I definitely think its growing more acceptable but you not gon find a whole block trading in the mongooses for a board, man. Its just not gon happen.
But its always been around, I think people are just starting to pay more attention to it when they see it. Is that because of P and Lupe? Possible but I doubt it.

Exactly. He's bringing back the storytelling element of hip hop and I really love him for that. It's rare (and somewhat nonexistent) that you see a single come out that has a story inside of it. That shit just doesn't happen anymore.

To clear this shit up:
Pharrell is from the Tidewater Region of VA (VA Beach, Norfolk, Portsmith, Newport News), so I guess that skateboard shit gets a pass down there. But on the real, that area ain't really hood... in comparison to Richmond. Their crime rates aren't too bad, and their neighborhoods are mixed with many races. They aren't known for serious crimes, just theft. Especially auto theft. They steal cars all day down there. But other than that, it's a nice place to vacation or raise your kids. But be forewarned: The cops in VA Beach are SUPER RACIST, and will lock you up for just about anything!
Now, here in Richmond, if you are seen skateboarding down an inner-city street, you'll probably get hit in the head with a brick and robbed for practicing that cracker ass shit. Besides, most of our sidewalks are broken and the streets have potholes... Where the hell could someone have a place to skateboard at?

Whether its skating, b-boying, emceeing, writing or whatever you do to express yourself props to those who stay true to themselves and do what they feel.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^I agree 100%, my wife and I do things like whitewater rafting, scuba diving, snorkeling, etc., and we be like the only black couple there for the most part; the negative is that we stick out like a sore thumb, the positive is there ain't no fighting, or shooting, or crews trying to cut in line and piss everybody off; for real though, we about to have a child this month and we gonna make sure he/she is well traveled and get to experience other cultures. And for the Richmond dude, you can whitewater raft right there on the James River, not too far away from the canal area downtown.
Versatile they've cracked down on cruising everywhere I think. Including loud music in your car. Up here (philly) if you blast music on south street its a $100-$300 fine.
Lol, on all the side streets you blast your music, but soon as you turn onto south, reach and turn that knob to the left.
VA is extra with that shit though. They have signs that say no profanity. If that's not a waste of tax dollars, I don't know what is.
Major tourist area cops are usually the strict Robocop, uphold the law type of dickheads, because they want to keep that area "pure".

Skateboarding is nothing new to the hood. I grew up on the Eastside of Long Beach, and we always had skaters. As a matter of fact, Pharell's boy, TK (Pro Skater Terry Kennedy) is from Eastside Long Beach. He's a gangbanger. So skateboarding is really nothing new to the hood. I think like some people have said, mainstream hip hop hasn't really embraced it until recently. Underground hip hop (acts such as Murs, with songs like "Ambitionz as a Rider") have shown Skateboarding love for awhile.
Pharrell is from the Tidewater Region of VA (VA Beach, Norfolk, Portsmith, Newport News), so I guess that skateboard shit gets a pass down there. But on the real, that area ain't really hood... in comparison to Richmond.

I dont give a fuck, Im from St.Louis, MO a city thats full of niggaz thinking they Atlanta and Vice-Versa, Im black and im a fucking hardcore skater and i do this shit everyday, when Lupe Fiasco made that kick-push track i was like DAMN! somebody answered my fucking prayers now niggaz out here aint gonna be so closed-minded on culture which is what skating is forreal and when niggaz is so stuck on crack and ice and gun-play we dont embrace other facets of life and sometimes I purposely go to the city (downtown) to have other niggaz (black people) see me skate because I know niggaz and never really seen it before and because of that its made me hate the shit outta St.Louis and the mindframe of young blacks today...

Not to mention that Church Hill is FULL of Projects- Whitcomb, Creighton, Fairfield, and Mosby. Now, which one of these gave you a PASS to skateboard on the street, without bullets whistling pass you head? The only part of CH that you could have been skateboarding in was that small portion at the top of the hill on the OTHER side of Broad St., near Shockoe Bottom. Where the community is mixed, and has some wealthy people living there. If you say anywhere else, then you're a goddamn lie, and will go to hell for that type of bullshit!

Lupe has definately set the bar high in hip-hop. Even with the 1st and 15th thing. Everybody know that these are "check" days in the hood. The man is real and skateboarding in Philly is seen in the hood.
I just stumbled onto this thread today. I'm writing a paper on skateboarding culture and was trying to touch on the emergence of skateboarding in the black community. I think Lupe Fiasco is a fantastic talent and I think you would be dim-witted not to recognize how fresh he is in the mundane world of hip-hop right now. I consider myself fairly accepting and open-minded, though I am a white guy who is disconnected from the black community. After reading through these posts I appreciate a lot of the well-thought opinions of some of you. Though, I can't help but think: aren't you somewhat embarrassed by the other people posting who are blatently and proudly fulfilling negative black stereotypes? All this "hood pass" and "thug life" talk. I know some of you will immediately jump to label me a racist. I know I didn't grow up my whole life in a black community (I did for a number of years), but I do listen to a lot of black music (Robert Johnson to James Brown to Jay-Z. I have studied the history of black America and am appreciative of the struggles of African Americans. I am just baffled by the those who blatently and proudly fulfill negative black stereotypes - that's all.
