Selling out was a BIG deal it was about conserving the Artform not letting corp companies and white business owners who don't give a sht about the culture control it.
I'm all for having fun and getting paid. But no ones making art any more.
The artform is now called the Game its a hustle instead of a artform. Before you had to be talented to get a deal.
Now you just need to be able to rhyme on beat and be catchy. I miss the artform. The wordplay, the skill, the creativity the people that constantly tried to gun to be the illest MC or write the dopest rhyme. The classic music. Not mad at those getting paid but as a whole everyone from all coast should be pissed off that there's no balance on the radio or TV. I blame all these shows that only play the top 10 songs or videos all damn day. Makin it dam near impossible to break a non-commericial artist.

On what Banga! was saying...I was listening to Outkast this morning -- I love their song called Hollywood Divorce - I have listened to it several times but I knew there was a concept that I was missing. And that is what art is to me it is like puzzle pieces that you search inside the music and not just rely on the title to give you insight on what they are really trying to say. You have to treat music especially hip hop like a museum of modern and classical art - you have to inspect it inside out; you have to scratch your head and rub your chin to figure out this brilliant message that is hidden inside the all the musical notes and the poetic metaphors. Music just helps people think and reflect and in light of more Black males being in prison than in college; with Black males’ high unemployment rate and high rate of homicide (in terms of being victims) we need multiple vehicles of mass communication to get the Black nation thinking and reflecting so that it can lead to the development of economic, political and social strategies that we can implement for a better and brighter Black America and Black world.

Conscious Hip Hop has a very significant role ( amongst a multiple list of other things we need to do in conjunction with this one element of the solution) and getting us to our desired and rightful place of peace and prosperity; the world over.

Apparently, most blacks have decided to do the wrong thing ( just being candid), the youth right now are more concerned with looking fly than getting educated, the number of kids born out of wedlock keeps rising, HIV, illiteracy, black-on-black violence.....too many issues and no one seems to care not even the people most affected. Sometimes I feel like giving up on my people. Help me.

Never give up! Find you someone you can influence and get them right. See, the mistake we make is in always saying that progress is a personal decision. A person only chooses the side of the familiar. If all a person sees is depression and indigence, that's the side they are going to choose. It takes someone with knowledge of self to influence that person to another way of thinking. That in the end is what makes cats like Immortal Tech relevant. I listen to everything because there is always something that will force me to contemplate my positions. I may not change it but I may expand it. Do your part! If your weapon of choice is speaking then pick it up and start talking. If it's helping at the Boys and Girls club, start helping. That extra time you spend at the beauty shop gossiping or watching that soap opera can be better utilized I'm sure. But never give up!

That's why I'm glad my 10 yr old plays football. He's prone to weight gain but during football he is in supreme shape. My 4 yr old is strong because he drinks milk, eats fruit and loves vegetables. I have to lose this beer belly but my wife loves it so it's cool.

I only have two things that I wear...and that are Nike sweat suits and business suits...

I am an athlete so I am constantly running ball and working out. I am crazed over the idea of getting fat so I workout all the time thus most of my clothes are for that part of my life...

When I am not working out I am on my legal grind which in consulting so I have to wear suits...

I don't even wear jewerly other than my watch...

However when I am fifty I will be wearing the same types of things for the same reasons.

Once you become proficient at writing them major universities and non profit organizations may try to recruit you to write grants for them....if they do tell them I will work with you on a sub-contracting basis so that they don't limit the anmount of money U make for yourself...

Game Theory is the best album I've heard this year also. Rick Ross's shit is hot also but Roots albums are classics. I got 4 of their CD's in my 12 deck. Wasn't feeling the Tipping Point but I figured that was a throw out album just to finish the deal with Geffen and jump to Def Jam. Yep. Pat Buchanan is as old school as they come.

One thing these crusty dudes are afraid of is how much power Latino communities wield. That's why I've always respected and admired them.

They have good work ethics, they have a mjority of the wealth and influence built up in their communities, and with the industries that are not only catering to Latino influence but are built solely on them, the majority of them who do cme into this country don't have to even learn English, learn American customs, or even "assimilate" into American culture because they have there own that hasn't been taken away from them.

That spells t-r-o-u-b-l-e for Pat Buchanan and all of these old school conservatives who simply want other races to be dependent on the white run economy, because Latinos have the numbers to do it on their own. Oh yes indeed. If there was one thing I can remember from my High School history classes, it's that the more things change the more things stay the same.

Progression can't occur in this country without an equal or greater regression in one area or another. History has shown the majority of people that these elements are the ying and yang of American (if not world) society.

The 80's was a good example of this. As Reagan came into office, the economy made major moves...for the well-to-do that is while the poor suffered horribly and the jail population increased tenfold due to the influx of crack cocaine into many impoverished areas.

Wealth usually comes at the expense of many in a capitalist society. And now it's coming back in full form with Katrina displaying to the world how unjust and unequal American society. And now, cities all over america are going over an economic restructuring.

Because of the low value of most low income areas and imminent domain laws, gentrification is pushing the poor out and the rich and well off in. This is going to the next generation of class warfare.

It's not unique to America too. When I was in London, I saw a report on BBC about how the nations debt has increased rapidly in just 5 years. Alot of that though is due to spending with credit cards, however that is Western influence at work.

The world may undergo a huge class restructuring in less than two decades, the only way to stay on top is to keep yourself informed on not only American affairs but international affairs as well. It's all cause and effect.

Like Affirmative Action, it should have a goodpurpose but isn't working as it should. Frankly I think the only things they've been doing as a whole is to make sure TV shows have at least one black person or other ethnic person on there. The more I look into things like Political Science and read alot of politically related materials, the real sign of leverage in society is generated by wealth.

All those -isms you described are just ways to distract us from looking at the way things really work in this country.

I think most blacks are so stuck on race issues, because of how we have been treated then and now (on a small or large scale depending how you want to see it, but it's smaller than ever before).

The point is money talks and walks too. The Jay-Z cristal fiasco was a great example of this. The person running that company essentially didn't want us buying there product, but because of the leverage that was provided (money) they had no choice but to take it. To say otherwise would be bad business, but in the end it was really fruitless because only a small percentage of the populus could really afford that shit anyway.

Black people are doing better than ever before! Only 25% of the black population is in poverty, while 8% of the white population is. Looking at the numbers, that's more white people in poverty than black.

However, the one thing I am sick and tired of people doing is complaining about how bad they have it, but doing nothing to change it, exactly what the powers that be want you to think and feel. There's more than enough things to use at their disposal, but alot of those things are government operated. Whatever, use what you can to get ahead, than when you are financially able, you don't need that anymore.

In order to move something, you essentially need an object of sorts to move it, or another force to make it budge. Basically, you need leverage and with that comes power. In order to have leverage, you need money, which in turns buys influence and power. That's one thing people (especially the black population) needs to realize if they want to stop being a statistic.

It seems that no matter whose immigrates to this country, whether it be Indians, Mexicans, Asians, Middle Easterners, etc., they maintain they're own identity, but collectively they all look down on black people, specifically African Americans (because Africans at large have their prejudices against African Americans).

But to those very people that they're trying look up to and "become", they're nothing more than second class citizens or inanimate objects whose differences are essentially admired for spectator purposes only.

Why do you think "Sex and the City" came out at the time it did?

It was only natural because most of these companies with these guidelines employ and are run by...white men. So, by the powers of deduction, well you can see how the limelight increased on sexual harrassment in the workplace to put two and two together.

But affirmative action has it's purpose. If it wasn't for that, there would be many people that are qualified (the common misconception amongst most people i.e. white people are that most of them aren't qualified but are there for colorizing purposes) wouldn't get these jobs or be in positions of elevated stature.

So it has it's good, but it seems that nowadays, African Americans (majorly men) are getting the bum end of the deal. They'll hire women because of their tendencies to be more productive, and because their less threatening to males, but discrimination still goes on.

But the one thing that irks meabout affirmative action is, well, it's based on dependence. To blacks, affirmative action is just preferential treatment, it seems like you didn't actually work to get in the position you got into, it was just handed to you. And it seems that it just promotes that minorities need white people's help to get into places like they don't have the capability itself.

And on that preferential treatment tip, Affirmative action has a place for putting qualified minorities in there. There's no reason a white guy who parties hard and got a 2.4 qpa should get hired over a black guy who had a 3.9 qpa in college and more qualifications just because he won't get offended when all of the guys at the water cooler tell jokes about "what do black people and acorns have in common?"

All in all, the purpose of many of these programs was to put in a number of people in these places in order to make sure they weren't needed in the future. I guess there's still alot of work to do.

And yeah, I don't see that number changing anytime soon. Alot of our younger heads are really focused on the future. While there is progression, there is regression with outside factors in the mix.

When some of you say real hip hop are you just talking about the hip hop YOU prefer since you consider yourself so "real."

If rap was to return to square 1 and come full circle we'd be back to reciting explicit nursery rhymes on the mic because that's what MC's did prior to 1980. How about Kurtis Blow? Eddie Cheeba? Busy Bee? Just what we need don't you think? None of them had anything meaningful to say and all were great in their era.

Another thing, in it's early form hip hop was about the DJ not the MC. Maybe that's where it should go too. As much as people complain about southern simple rap, they'd be shocked to know that partying and simplicity is where the artform began.

Melle Mel started something with "The Message" and rappers have improved upon that ever since BUT that is not original hip hop.

My original comment was a response to "I'm Back" for saying that old school Hip Hop was inherently simple and that spitting about reality was not originally Hip Hop music. There's an argument to be made about Hip Hop music originally being care free and not conscious I already conceded that but if your point is that out of all those artists you mentioned, all were nursery rhyme sayers at all times with nothing clever to say, then we have a debate.

If you were there, that's awesome, I wish I could have been but I was busy breast feeding (as of 1980) and before that I was chilling in either the womb or the nut sack still loving Hip Hop, though I didn't know it yet. You can't knock a brother for learning about the culture (no lessons needed either) and repping it when most cats my age are out there either thuggin, fake thuggin, or snappin their fingers like some sambos. Those forms of music just mentioned are not Hip Hop either by the way because they are not extensions of the culture that is Hip Hop. They are sub-genres and can be considered rap but without the cultural connection they are not at all Hip Hop. Where is KRS when I need him? Initially, our exchange on this blog began with an assumption about my views and that I was a Hip Hop elitist (which you admitted basically in your last comment) but I was referring to something specific so keep it focused and if your point is that all Hip Hop music pre 1980 was absolutely simple in all forms then say that, although I'm sure that's not your position.
