da problem wit hip hop is their isn't enough good new artist to take da place of da old ones. new york hasn't had a new artist make an impact since 50 cent and that's been 3 or 4 years ago.

The Neptunes may not be raw uncut, but is that really the sound Jigga is looking for now? He'll be 38 or 39 when his album drops. He's on that so-called "grown and sexy" shit now, and the Neptunes have that sound on lock right now.

But, at the same time, thr Neptunes can give you some hardcore shit on some "Mr. Mee Too" flavor, and Jay would have killed that song. So let's not panic too quickly yet. It wouldn't make any good business sense to not have at least one Kanye track. But this is a good way to hopefully humble Kanye and shut up his big mouth.

Budden has been on Def Jam forever and only released one damn album. He's a drug addict who ate out Gloria Velez on her period. He needs to be dropped asap.

And Redman, the person who has fallen off the hardest out of those three, should be seriously ashamed of himself. Out of these 3 rappers, he is the only one to have single handedly ruined his career over drugs and cooning and selling out. It's to the point that I don't know one real hiphop fan who wants to hear anymore music from Red. He's washed up. His label won't even put him on a single. And while there might be a big demand from the buying public for more music from Redman, Def Jam doesn't care because Red is a liability who ruined his career by smoking too much weed and losing his ambition. My question is with rappers like Saigon, Tru Life, Papoose - what really sets them apart from the rest of the hiphop artists who are signed? They're not creating their own lane, they're not differentiating themselves from others. They just have different machines behind them hyping them up as the next big artists, but if that were the case why have they been on the backburners for so long? There is no real demand to hear albums from these guys, because if there was we all know their record labels could put out an album next month if they wanted to. Jae Millz too. Gravy, Stack Bundles, they're all the same rapper rapping about the same things in the same ways, and that's so sad.
And I love Phonte too but that dude needs to switch up his subject matter quick. All he raps about is how the current state of rap is in shambles and how MTV and BET won't play his shit and how The Listening outsold The Minstrel Show.

The probably with hip hop is not only the artists' lack of creativity, but its the record label and the lack of purpose from the hip hop community. We ain;t thirsty no more. First off, he should have started his own record label back in the day, so that in times like these he could play the exec and make his own decisions. Instead he has to wait on Jay, who came in the game 5 years after Red, to make a decision. He's Jay's son, sad to say.
Also, looking at what these other artists have had to do, Red would most likely have to sign to Koch, where you get alot of money per CD sold, but your budget is minimal and Koch rappers never have big success.

Tony Snow (LOL, funny!), Kanye is mos def not all that. I agree with that. But he did take a risk and dop and album that went completely in the opposite direction of 95% of the other rap albums out, and it was greeted with love. Because it was a breath of fresh air in terms of content (something alot of rappers don't care about nowadays). And he uses money out of his own pocket to fund alot of his projects all in the name of making quality music. I can't be mad at him for that, and other rappers could take a page from his book.

He could get on a semi indy like bbc (little brother's label) or do albums and then sell it to the highest bidder (like Gnarles Barkley)

OK, D Boy, I can respect that. I know Joe has fans. But as far as his releases from that Def Jam album, the second single was terrible, and that turned off those consumers you keep talking about. Joe can rap, this is true, but he's not doing enough to separate himself from the rest, and I think that was his downfall.

And I can agree that all these backpack internet dudes should stop raping the net and stealing music and should go out and buy the albums they want, but the reality of it is that much of the CDs that are ripped from the net are intellectually superior in nature to the other albums that sell big (Nelly, Lil Jon, Ying Yang), and the masses generally don't want to think when they listen to music. So that other shit is gonna sell regardless because it's mindless music that doesn't touch on any serious topics.

Agreed, Essex! Kanye got lyrics and multiple rap styles, and in terms of producing and arranging tracks, he's only getting better. Common's album Be was a testament to that, and then Late Registration just continued showing his growth as a rapper and producer. And one thing I really respect about Kanye is how whenever he's being interviewed, he'll always bust a new rhyme a capella that no one has heard. All forms of original music: rock, rap, jazz, country have sold out at some point. All of your favorite albums came from folks trying to get out of a situation.

Jay's 1st album - he was coming out the game. Big's 1st album - he was coming out the game.

These cats were trying to change their situation, their spot in life. You can't duplicate that energy if you not in the same place. If the bullets ain't flyin, if you not dippin from the po-po. If you don't have to worry about stick up boys anymore, how can you bring that to wax.

When you got $100k on a watch, $250k on a chain. New kicks everyday, your struggle ain't the same. Now your struggle is keeping it. And to keep it requires something going. Sometimes it's your soul, sometimes its your man.
But something has to give.

For awhile no one was checking for jazz music, then Kenny G came along. And it was easier to listen to, it didn't require as much attention as Coltrane or Byrd. Rap music has gone the same route, it used to require something from you, but you couldn't sell that to the masses. It had to be watered down so that the masses black and white would buy it. Don't forget that back in the day our parents fronted on the whole Hip Hop scene. So it wasn't just folks from outside our hoods, people in our hoods fronted on rap.

So the real question is this:

Who are you going to support with your dollar. If you buy the underground artist from your local cd shop then he gets paid, the cd shop gets paid and everybody wins. If you only buy Ye, or Hova or Snoop from Tower, Best Buy, etc then the music machine wins.

Put your money where your mouth is! Support your local artist just as much as a national artist and then you'll know that you can always get "the real" and not just the latest trend or fad.

Anyway, part people, I'm out. Nice debating with most of you. I don't think this story is as much about Jay only working with the Neptunes as it is about Jay not working with Kanye because he blew up Hov's spot by telling people about the planned album.
