Hey yall.....in hiphop i think people forget too fast...especially if u ain't round to constantly remind em....
these cats was dope when i was coming up but coz hiphop was in it's formative years n still changing..rapidly...Bambataa n em became irrelevant as the likes of Ra, the juice crew n em was blowin up...n the cycle kept continuing till today...
The same happened with other genres in their formative years but there will always be an icon of an era n it's almost always never the originators...
Frankie n Richard don't get props, Elvis does...Peter Tosh no props but Bob does..Yellowman no props but Sean Paul does...it's just how people are..
PAMOJA!!!

u got it wrong man. the holy trinity of dj's is herc, bambatta & flash not caz. even tho he did dj caz is more known as an mc
Posted by: shakes at July 10, 2006 07:40 AM
No, Reckless is right...It aint even just old school cats like Bambada and Herc...Niggas talk shit about rappers who are still raping in their 30's....Jigga just retired 2 years ago and niggas is complaining whenever he do a show talking about how they sick of him and wish he would sit down somewhere, and that's coming from people who claim to be his fans...the shit makes no sense...White artists like U2, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones are still doing shows and them niggas is in their 50s.You never hear their "fans" mad because they're doing a show...Paul McCartney is like 63 and still selling out concerts and aint none of his fans tell him they sick of him and that he need to sit down somewhere...I think its just black culture...We love to hate each other....

after checking out krs-one at the loft in atlanta this weekend, i totally agree that our hiphop pioneers have been slighted from their just due. we need more awareness to weed out the bullshit(glorifying of black negativity) like the football, basketball, baseball hall of fames.
Posted by: blowitioutchaass at July 10, 2006 08:03 AM
I don't agree with you SOHH. I actually think you are talking rather reckless this morning.
I have definitely heard the Jay's and Nas's give props to the originators of rap. I just don't think they should have to repeat themselves in every rhyme. It's said when it is relevent. As far as all the "King," "Queen," "Prince," and "Princess" titles- that's all b.s. In both Rap and R&B. I don't think people take those titles seriously. I certainly do not.
And in my opinion, when people die, the fans marter them a bit more than when they are alive. They become bigger stars in their death. That's just how it is.

Dude what the fuck do these niggas want us to do? Damn !!! Okay, you help father hiphop, so good for ya aiight !!! The difference in these cats are most of them are bitter cause of the money hiphop gets now. Plus, when these cats were hot, they didn't capitalize on their loot in there hoods. Its understood that corporate america wasn't feeling hiphop at that time, but damn the money you had could've been invested somewhere else. Plus they got to remember that props don't come in paychecks......we thank you, but damn !!!

Black Friday is right. The difference is also, that what the other white guys do is timeless music. You can listen to a Beatles song today although it was written 30 years ago. Same with Rolling Stones.
In rap its different. Young kids get mad when they hear real old school, alwasy bitchin. When they get in stage, who is dat old man? Most kids would not recognize any of the 2nd set of pics in the street but they would get wet in their opants if they would see a created bullshit r&b homo.
Personally, thoise three shold be respected but they also shouldnt be bitter. With KRS One I sometimes think that something is really wrong with him,
always complaining about hip hop. well, nobody buys your albums, and in fact they get worse and worse. I also know for a fact from friends that work in the industry that he is not "easy to deal with" and I say that very nicely.
Anyway, it is a shame but thats life.

Hey there sweetie! What's up? Lol. I said I wasn't going to be on these blogs today. Lol. I'ma try. I agree with you though. It is sad that most of our rappers have to die before they claim that title, but that is the way it is. Is it right? No. We all know that. But until we decide to deviate from the norm, it'll be that way.
YOUNG GUICE also made some sense in stating that a lot of these pioneers did not successfully market themselves to make the money that is being made today. But, to that I also say that most of these pioneers didn't have such a big market as these new rappers. They had to create their audience. Whereas the audience is already here now.

Who disrespected the Bronx? And how? Hip Hop started in the Bronx but it quickly evolved and is still evolving. Instead of whining about 30yr old accomplishments make something new happen. Truth be told the Bronx has not produced any dominant talent since other people got in on the act and you have to wonder why? Honestly, not even Manhattan has produced any dominant artist and I emphasize the word "dominant" since skill is subjective. The original artists from the BX wanted to be more like singers minus the singing. Melle Mel danced around like Mijac back in the day. Truthfully, it's not even the same artform anymore.
People seem to have forgotten that Hip Hop more so than any other genre started as music made by KIDS for KIDS. Perhaps it's time for these old ass men, many nearly 50 and the majority grandfathers to step their game up. They should all be execs, program directors, major promoters and the like. Instead, they're trying to put out albums or get handouts.
Where's their dignity or self respect?
Posted by: Nimrod at July 10, 2006 08:59 AM
Thank you. Many people lose sight on who started this and why we do it.
Afrika Bambata? Looked for an end to gang violence and started the Zulu nation.
Kool Herc? Brought the "sound system" sensibilities from Jamaica and pioneered extending the break. Deep crates.
Grand Master Caz? The first of the charasmatic M.c.s. If you don't know, go rent "Wildstyle" and peep his "Yvette" rhyme, then go get LL FIRST album and peep "Dear Yvette".
And finally, love for the D.J. There would be no Hip-Hop without US!!!!!! Who else woulda thought to go through Bob James' catalog? Who else woulda though to speed up an Issac Hayes song from an obscure Blackspoitation flick to create arguably one of the most intense breaks ever discovered? Who woulda thunk to go through the Disney recordings? D.J.'s, that's who. What would make a sane person think rubbing a record back and forth under the stylus would create a whole generation of people looking fo the perfect scratch? Who introduced James Brown, George Clinton, Aretha Franklin, Aerosmith, Queen and countless other artists to new audiences? The D. J. Yeah, thank us later.......

"Fuck them old niggas, if they ain't talkin' about hustlin' killin niggas or goin' platinum they ain't shit, nobody wanna hear that shit no way."
Today's rap fan.
I hear that REDUNDANT bullshit all the time from these young punks. I even went as far as 2 bump Planet Rock 4 some young cats 2 teach them about the pioneers, and they told me that Afrika Bambatta's music did'nt sell because it was garbage, and what's sad is like the piece said, groups like The Stones, Aerosmith U2 & The Boss, them cats are in their 50's and still attract young fans, why can't the same respect be shown 2 the pioneers of Hip Hop? U young stans need 2 do the the knowledge on the foundation of Hip Hop. There's more 2 Hip Hop than just being a hustla.
Open your mind young niggas!!!

I think yall missing the point...Nobody said anything about giving these niggas a check...Respect is worth more than money...And yeah niggas like Hov and Nas show the creators respect but we aint talking about them...Reckless is talking about the new generation...90% of them won't even know who know who the four fathers of hip hop are and couldn't care less...Its not like that in other genres of music...Everybody atleast knows who Aretha is...We all know who Al green is, we all know who the beatles are. I aint saying you gotta be bumping they shit but you atleast know who they are...Hip Hop aint like that...these kids forget about niggas 10 mins after they leave off stage...Like I said Jigga retired 2 years ago and these niggas is trying to sweep him under the carpet already...In a couple of years niggas might not recognize him when they show his picture...
Posted by: Black Friday at July 10, 2006 09:02 AM
Now I know alot of cats are gonna get all sensitive, but that shit had to be said. Shit, hiphop niggas want to be worshipped !!! That shit ain't gonna happen cap'n, so stop with all the whining about the damn past. It's good to look back on it, plus the shit was way more fun in the late 80's. People had more styles, and more of a character presence. Now that late 70's eary 80's shit.......nah man, preciate it but it goes on the shelf right beside a Swing Low record. P.S. You can put a wack ass Fat Joe cd(any) up there too !!! Holla.....Da Guice has spoken, EARLY !!!

What's up BLACK FRIDAY? I hear ya on the 90% that don't know. But, my question is:
Whose priority is it to school the new artists? Is it the labels? The artists? I mean, whose shoulder does it fall on? Or should I ask, who dropped the ball? The Rap genre is not all that old for the pioneers to have already been forgotten. So, who stopped the acknowledgement? Is it that hiphop (as a whole) is morfing too quickly? I mean, we aren't talking about the 60's. 70's and up. That's not quite 40 years, and already they are being forgotten.

Go cop The Rotten Apple on sep 19th, shit is fire
Posted by: shakeem at July 10, 2006 09:25 AM
i think the point is
the new generation don't know nor care about its roots.
However on the flip nowaways everyone's a rapper not everyone's a hip-hop artist. Meaning everyones tryin to get paid and no one gives a fk about the culture, the music or the people anymore. Its part of the reason people refer to the music as the game its now a hustle like crack. It's no longer a way of life, the voice of the Ghetto. Now its all substanceless B.S. to make a dollar. Hip Hop was about makin a difference and pushing the creative envelope now its full of rappers who are content with the way things are. Justify the B.S. the goes on in the streets, sell their souls to make a dollar and a bunch of sellouts at the top who are conforming in a attempt to be accepted by white america. I'm not hating on Puff and Jay success(I'm proud) but hip hop was about making white america accept us for the way we are. Now we're rockin button ups to every club and wearing suits to all their events. I thought the point was we're different and they need to open their minds to something their not familiar with. But now instead of setting the trend we're conforming.
Worse hip-hop clothes are so over priced our own people can't afford them so who are we really marketing our clothes to. Then it's not like we can rock those clothes to clubs cause the dress codes have us dressed european.
I'd luv hip-hop to make a comeback
but mainstream companies won't allow it. Plus theres to many gangsta's willing to sellout for record sales to give true hip hop acts a chance to emerge. Until people start rebelling against all this bubble gum crap and demanding real music from these labels hip hop is done! I'm not mad at anyone getting money but were's the love for the people the music and the culture

Again, it's bad when a dude has to go back 30yrs to find validation. People have to live in the NOW. Those guys had something and they blew their shot because they lacked vision. Leave it up to them and they'd still be in the parks jamming.
I remember Red Alert's son on the radio in NY during the 80's and befor I knew it his voice was deeper than mine but Red was still in the same DJ slot on air. Eventually Red was let go and understandably so. Did he think he would be there forever?! It's the same with all the old dudes, they had their time and some took advantage while most let it slip away. Get over it.
Now, in all honesty no other boro has its stamp on hip hop as much as Queens. From Def Jam to Fresh Fest and more shit than I have time to mention. The BX created hip hop but Queens commercialized it and therefore is the true underlying reason so many people have gotten filthy rich from the game.
Niggas can keep complaining but they better get on their grind because time waits for no one.

The African American race is to blame for the violence in this country. You people contunue to promote the criminal life. Why is it good to have a police record? What is so great about being a convicted felon? All African Americans (especially you young black males) are criminal thugs and low lives who need to be put away and the keys thrown away. It is because of you people that more prisons are being built.
Posted by: Kenneth Ackerman at July 10, 2006 09:39 AM
The problem is that these people have faded from the public eye. In order to be considered a legend or greatest of all time, you have to still be in the mix of things. People, especially the up and coming generation, are not going to give somebody who they have never heard of recognition or props, especially in the hip hop community. If you don't represent the here and now then you're basically irrelevant. In the hip hop community, it's here today, gone tomorrow. We have a tendency to focus on what's hot right now, or who's in the limelight at the moment, not the has beens (sorry) of yesterday.

Not really. You can't be 50 years old on stage with pants falling off your ass talking about "I'ma gat that nigga, I'ma spank that hoe, I'ma pimp this bitch, Thug nigga fa sho!!!"
Rappers have a limited time to rap. Rap is for the youth. Not 50 year olds.
Posted by: PleaseSTFUyouOldBitch at July 10, 2006 10:30 AM
How the hell are you going to compare the top 3 to the bottom 3? For one, they're not even in the same category of music and they're not involved in the same culture movement. We recognize those top 3 because American media have made them recognizable.
Also, the music the top 3 created was timeless. The music hip hop creates only goes but so far because hip hop music has age limitations. Its a young genre. Everything has to be new and fresh. Anything old is forgotten.
