Bronx Stand Up: Cory Gunz Speaks With SOHH NYC

Written by SOHH Reckless

Posted on July 21, 2006 4:22 AM

Cory Gunz has a plan. As the son of one of Bronx’s pioneers, this MC has a lot on his plate and a big load to carry. SOHH NYC sat down and spoke with the young lyricist about carrying NYC’s weight on his shoulders, his upcoming album, his Militia crew, his latest moves with DJ Green Lantern and his desire to create a hip-hop classic.

SOHH: So introduce yourself. For everyone who's not familiar with you, just give a little rundown real quick

Cory: My name is Cory Gunz, 19-year-old hip-hop prodigy -- people call me. I started doing this, I would say around 14, 15 years old I started writing my own material. Pushin' it, got a series of mixtapes out, The Apprentice, people know me from that. Just little minor things in the streets, SMACK DVDs, little things here and there. Just keeping my name out. You know.

SOHH: So what was the volume of SMACK you had appeared on?

Cory: I belive it was the second or third volume. 'Cause he had a few out before and a lot of people didn't notice. [But] a lot of people were exposed on the footage he had on the dvd so it was kind of a good look for me at the same time, so... it was crazy. That's what a lot of people know me from.

SOHH: Do you think that being Peter Gunz's son is more of a pro or a con? 'Cause a lot of people might say that's a weakness or a strength.

Cory: It's a pro, at the same time because my father, he knows a lot of people in the business, he knows the business and the ins and the outs and he's not gonna see me fail. And he doesn't want me to make the same mistakes he made throughout his career. And its a con because he had a huge record ["Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)"], and a lot of people would expect for me to live up to that hype, which... I don't like to down talk myself at all, but I'm my worst critic. And for me to live up to the height of that record is crazy. That was a nationwide hit and that's some of the pressure that I have.

SOHH: Around the same time that record ["Déjà Vu"] blew up, Big Pun hit the scene. What do you think happened with the Bronx scene after that?

Cory: Um... I have no idea. Like Pun... it's not like there's a lot of dudes come out of the Bronx that's reppin' hard like that. I mean, you got Fat Joe, of course the whole Terror Squad represents the Bronx. And there's a few local dudes that I would know, that were representing the Bronx during their era, but hip-hop is so dead right now that nobody's really listening to any lyrics. It's just straight like 'what's the catchiest hook, what's the catchiest chorus, what's the dance that's out' or whatever. Things like that. Nobody's really listening to hip-hop or rap anymore so, people are losing interest so that's why there are really no artists...

SOHH: Right, I feel you. Now I know this is like a big weight to carry on your shoulders but how do you feel like you can change the whole New York City rap situation?

Cory: I bring lyrics to the table and at the same time, a lot of versatility. I don't just make music for myself. I know how to step out of the box and make music for my fans. But at the same time it's pleasurable to me because it's something I love to do, so it's like a win-win situation with me. Most of the music that I do, I get a lot of opinions on it -- most good -- like I make sure that I cover every area. And I don't just listen to rap. I listen to a lot of other music. I'm talkin like, R&B, I listen to a bunch of different genres of music. R&B, classical music, alternative, rock n' roll, everything. So... I just keep an open end for everything.

SOHH: I was feelin' that joint "BX Boro" on Green Lantern's mixtape. I was impressed. How did the whole making of that track go down?

Cory: Yeah, I was working on an album like, I'm working on my album currently. And um, he came to the session or whatever. And we actually have a mixtape coming out that we're working on. We're not sure of the title or anything but we're working on it. He just came in there, he came in there with the instrumental and broke down the concept of the whole mixtape with me: On My New York Shit mixtape, that was the name of it. He basically wanted me to come for the Bronx like he had a lot of young artists that were coming and representing their boroughs like Papoose from Brooklyn, Stack Bundles from Queens, different up-and-coming artists. He wanted me to do the Bronx. That was an honor so I did it.

SOHH: Yeah, that's whassup. So you have the appearance on the new Green Lantern mixtape you're working on. Are there any other mixtape appearances?

Cory: I'm working on my own mixtapes. I'm actually hard body working on my crew stuff, the Militia stuff. My partner Rain down in Fayetteville, North Carolina, my man Hash â€" I grew up with Hash, he's from around my neighborhood. Rain, he's got a heavy buzz, everybody knows him. These are the things I'm really focused on. I think I have a few other areas to focus on as far as exposure and people knowing me. But my main goal and my main focus is to get them on.

SOHH: Right…that's whassup. So let's talk about the album. What's the title?

Cory: The Commencement[via Def Jam Recordings] right now. We weren't sure if we were gonna go with that title, but I think I'ma keep it because at the same time, 'the commencement' is the growth, it's like, something new to me. I'm bringing something fresh and new to rap as far as hip-hop's concerned, I'm bringing a different, new sound. Like, I want my album to be in the category of one of the classics. I want to be remembered. So The Commencement is something new I'm bringing that fresh new sound to the table.

SOHH: Now I had heard something about "1668." What is that about?

Cory: Yeah. That's a concept record… actually me and my father came up with that. Because he sat down and he comes up with a lot of things, and me and him play a lot. Like, we'll be sitting there joking and saying a lot of concepts and he wouldn't expect for me to do it, but I would go sit and write about the stuff he'd talk about so, it was one of those records, and it came out good. It was actually about me breaking down what goes on on every floor of my building. There's different drama on every floor from the top to the bottom. And as I make my way to the bottom there's gonna be a different story… like, it's gonna go through every house.

SOHH: So the album is set for release how soon?

Cory: There's no definite date right now. We're still working… it's in the air. The reason the album is being held is because of the single. Like, we have a lot of records but but we don't feel like we have that smash record that's gonna make that impact, that's gonna catch everybody's attention once you hear it. Once we get that smash that I feel is the record we need to push the button on, then…

SOHH: What about "Mr. Fresh"?

Cory: "Mr. Fresh" is potential. It's definitely a potential. It's just something so that the streets won't forget me. It's definitely one of the records for the clubs or whatever, it's something we're actually pushing ourselves so… for everybody to take notice of me. That's all that is.

SOHH: Any guest appearances on the album?

Cory: I got Ryan Leslie on the album, he's a producer, songwriter… and I don't really listen to R&B like that like that, I'm not really a huge, huge, huge fan or R&B but he's definitely an R&B artist who's album I can sit through. I got Cassidy on the album of course, Lil' Wayne on the album. Of course my father, Lord Tariq, Rain, my Militia camp. It's definitely family-oriented at the moment, but there are a lot of artists that I'm looking forward to working with.

VIDEO CLIP: See footage of Cory Gunz recording w/ Ryan Leslie.

SOHH: Now this is something a lot of rappers can't do: Do you freestyle?

Cory: I do freestyle. It's not something that I do all the time like, I do it to play around with my friends but that's how I actually started rapping. I started freestyling at the top of my head then my father was the one who inspired me to write things down. And I just listened to different artists coming upâ€"like Eminem, Jay-Z, Nasâ€"and developed a way to word the way I feel.

SOHH: Alright well that pretty much wraps it up. So is there anything else you wanna say? Any closing statements?

Cory: Just look out for the Militia stuff. My album coming soon, The Commencement, look out for the single coming soon, which we don't know what that is, but look out we're about to hit it hard, the Militia mixtape is out "Caller of Duty," and that's about it. Thank you.

I never knew "Deja Vu" by Peter Gunz and Lord Tariq was that big. But I guess that's when hip-hop was at it's right stage.

Cory Gunz is crazy, if he able to make the crossover then that would be dope, its not that easy for these mixtape dudes to do that and as for son up there talking about 50 yeah he got release dates but aint nobody buying that ish no more...

Uptown baby! Uptown baby!

That as hot track, too bad they couldn't run with that momentum.

Question: Did anyone else on her think that Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz eerily reminded you of Kid 'N' Play? I swear to you, I was fooled for a minute back in the day, LOL

I'm not crazy right?...Rocky, Dig, back me up...LOL

YO

YO !!!!!

Is that Corey Gunz on th Cassie remix (the original remix without Puff)?
I caught it on a mixtape and I think it was him. Either that or India Arie's remix...

Either way I know I heard him once or twice and he was alright.

To the assanine person who stated that this kid wont make it... just watch that first impression he made on the smack dvd, if your favorite emcees can go lung for lung with that flow he spat on that then you are right but I put my life that your favorite emcee cant.

To the dude who said he didn't know deja vu was that big, what rock were you under son? You definitely got your hip hop pass revoked.

This kid had me as a skeptic for a minute but he kept at it. I thought he was going to be another ali vegas and fall off but he's still grinding plus he's got real heavy hitters (tommy mottola) behind him. He cant go wrong. Nice flow, he almost signed with shady two years ago.

Fuck that, i was tryna hate on dipset some more. Sohh u ruined my morning. oh well, fuck it. Peter Gunz was nice(still is) but i don't know about thid kid, never heard em. is he worth a shit? let me know. peace

am convinced shakeem is a blackwall nigga that here to spark g-unit hate.

"Uptown baby! Uptown baby!

With so much supposed intelligence and business knowledge, one has to question the validity and reasoning behind why in the hell would you post something like this on a site where the subject is on hip-hop... Sureeeeee, "1 date is all I need" HAHAHA.

...see what I mean...

LiL Eazy -E is wack, nigga would be a derelict if it were not for the fact that he is Eazy -E's son.
Dr.Dre's illegitimate son is ok nothing to write home about, but he is a bit more musically sound than LiL Eazy.
I have love for the west coast but it will always be a stepchild to an East Coast revolution.
NYC is like "Morpheus" giving the rest of the world that magic pill which opens up new dimensions of intellect, sight, and sound, causing institutionalized minds to transcend the barriers that besiege them!.
No matter how hard you try, you will never be able to see The NYC, not even with an electron microscope!!!!...
Bronx, River - Mighty Zulu Nation - La Familia - Ghetto Brothers - Gestapo - Watson Ave MoBB - Cozy Corners - Castle Hill - Grand Concourse - Fordham Road and to the rest of The Bronx - witness the rebirth!!!!.

IMMMORTAL TECH IS THAT NIGGA !!!!! FUCK THE REST !! THIS NIGGA TECH IS THE TRUTH !!! THE TRUE KING OF HARLEM !

Please stop the press. This is the type of shit that's fuckin up hip hop today.

Niggas slidin in the game on some GP shit. I ain't never heard any of his music and don't really care to. I can already tell that the hype is more than the music will ever be.

Prime example is that wack nigga papoose. I don't get what the hype is all about. All it takes is two niggas to cosign you these days and a that starts a movement. What a fuckin joke.Let the niggas who got talent in the game and stop pushing these gimmicks on us.

And to all you niggas on here screaming that the DeJa Vu joint was big, maybe in NY, but not all over. If that record was so big, why didn't you ever hear anything else from them niggas, cause they was wack.

Get Ya Mind Right

That's a shame that I live in Fayetteville, NC and dunno who the hell Rain is. I like C.Gunz but he's gonna have to step up his whole writing skills and songmaking ability to even see a gold plaque.

Ya'll New Yawk niggaz reek of jealousy.

i'm from Va. we reek of trees and the evil eye. high gravity lager mahfukka, fuck a malt liquor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i fucks w/ NC. Little Brother is the best group coming outa the south right now. 9thwonder crafts a perfect melody. i'm also feeling Divine Profits coming outa richmond. they're like the southern version of Wu. fuck w/ me!!

Mize2:

I feel u on Tech, i've been sayin that isht but nobody is listening. heads don't respect skill anymore. thats why u take that skill and sharpen it on a "grinding stone" till it's on point and stab it thru the none believers skull till u reach his/her brain.

I cant believe corey Gunz is trying to make a living off his pops one hit wonder!!! them niggas fell off something serious....especially if corey grew up in the hood, cause pops was supposed to be about paper. Niggas still in the 'jects when they all on tv and shit, thats ass backwards. fuck this nigga, he aint real. J hood, jae millz, serious jones, mook, saigon, even papoose is killin off this nigga, and they all from NY. If NYC gravitates towards this dude, yall through.... WHAT IS HIP HOP becoming that Hollywood celebrity shit???? kids of celebrities become instantly famous???? theres at least 400 thirsty niggas in BX right now who are more real, spit better, and have way less industry connections than corey gunz. fuck corey gunz, lil easy, and any celeb kids who think they real in this.... fucking private school trust fund type niggas frontin like they street niggaz.... Yo Joe Ripps, fuck the real Mayor of La, antonio villaragosa. I live out here and i didnt know they torn that farm down, but i know what youre talkin about. All that is is politics, he tryin to get them white folks votes. LA is so grimey, and you would think a mayor who supposedly "comes from the street" would want to fix some shit, but he aint much different than any other muthafucka in office. But that shit is irrelevant to the hip hop blog, so chill with that shit nigga.

The kid got talent but he can't ride the beat!!! Besides, SHAQ is Cory Gunz's godfather so I ain't worried about him. I still wish him the best though.

nah, it's not just relevant it's what real hiphop is about. u sayin the hood aint hiphop? u sayin fighting for ur rights aint hiphop? u sayin being socially and politically conscious aint hiphop? not being those thing is what is ruining hiphop. take the money and turn ya back on ya people, thats hiphop huh?. that title ur postin under represents that. recognize son or it might be ur block gettin burnt down next.

I'm from the West and I can tell you that there's only a few decent niggas out there. But that being said those few decent niggas would probably eat u p your favorite rapper like nothing! X to the Z Xzibit, The Game, Ras Kass, E-40, Aceyalone. Kurupt and Snoop at one point but both of them niggas fell off. Lil Eazy is garbage as a rapper, same as his father (but he never claimed to be good. Bomb ass business man though R.i.P) Hood Surgeon is a whack ass nigga that's gonna try and ride his father and beef to the top. He already talkin' greezy bout the Game. He can't see him lyrically though. And Cory Gunz is proper, I fucks wit him. He aint gon bring NY back (no one will, if it aint happen yet then it wont) but he'll probably make a hot ass album. But to me it already sounds like too many features. But to the people talkin about Immortal Tech. props to yall for knowing bout that real shit. Don't forget Jedi Mind Tricks and Sean Price.

Goddamn!
Another article with yet another artist saying the same ol' bullshit as everybody else: "Hip Hop is Dead." Well, here's a question to all artists who believe that shit: "If Rap music is dead, then why the fuck do you keep rapping?" That's like pumping blood into a dead body. Either you're going to innovate your style to broaden your fanbase, or you going to keeping doing the same shit and only appeal to your local fan base. But why start popping shit about what the industry is giving limelight to, when you're just starting to get in the game? If you've noticed, when other artists have uttered those words, their album bricked tremendously. So unless you want to be labeled as a nobody, then keep your mouth shut about your personal feelings, and only do interviews that are geared towards promoting you album. Period.

damn, even on the weekend niggas yappin off hardbody!! yo homie with your fantasy NYC stories you wish you was hustling in New York you fuckin mushmouth, get at john singelton and see if he'll buy your script about hog ties and harlem niggas. sounds like 'paid in full' with a twist of 'roots'... Blowfly (artist)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Blowfly is the stage name and alternate persona of Clarence Reid (b. February 14, 1945 in Cochran, Georgia) who was a songwriter for many hit R&B acts in the 1960s and 1970s. As Blowfly, he has recorded numerous albums, mostly of sex-based parodies of other songs as well as original raps themed around sex. His stage name originated from his grandmother, who overheard him as a child singing "Do the Twist" as "Suck My Dick", and said "You is nastier than a blowfly."

Reid started off writing songs for artists including Betty Wright, Sam & Dave, and KC & the Sunshine Band. He also recorded a few hits of his own in the 60's including a song called "Rap Dirty" in 1965. Many hip hop fans consider "Rap Dirty" as the first rap song because in he talks in rhyme and it has rap (slang for talk) in the title.

Reid would write sexually explicit versions of hit songs for fun but only performed them for his friends at parties or in the studio. In 1971, he along with a band of studio musicians recorded a whole album of "dirty" songs under the name "Blowfly". Back then, no record label would release profane material so he distributed the records himself on his own independent record label, Weird World.

Blowfly's debut album, The Weird World of BlowflyThe album, The Weird World of Blowfly, features Reid dressed as a low-rent supervillain on its cover. Reid created this alter ego to protect his career as a songwriter. Reid continued to perform in increasingly bizarre costumes as his Blowfly character. The albums were widely popular in the South as "party records" in the 70's.

Many of Blowfly's songs featured his style of talking in rhyme which can be considered a primitive form of rapping. Many of his songs have also been sampled in numerous hip hop songs. After rap music hit the mainstream with Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight", Reid recorded a profane version of "Rap Dirty" titled "Blowfly's Rap". The song was a hit and helped the album, Blowfly's Party reach #26 on Billboard magazine's Black Albums chart and #82 on the Billboard Top 200 in 1980.

LOL @ this cat thinking Blowfly created rap back in the 60's, when, in fact, NY had cats rapping in Doo Whop and Jazz groups in the 50's in harlem at places like the cotton club.

My pops told me all about that era. So once again, Hip-hop started in NY.

And notice how blowfly, stole his songs from artist like Chubby Checker " Do the Twist" and Odis Reddings, "Sitting On the Dock of the bay".

Blow Fly named "Suck my Dick" after "the twist" and "Shitting on the dock of the bay" after "Sitting on the dock of the bay".

LMAO. And the south still continues to bite off other people's music today and claim it as theirs. LMAO

Blowfly? he influenced weird al yankavic more than hiphop. if u wanna talk about kats who rapped over a beat and talking in rhyme in the 60's then u should take a look at Gil Scott-heron. he was real and i think he was from harlem, not sure of the burrough but he's nyc. the truth is hiphop originating from the sampling/scratching of dj's not rappers. mc's were used to get the crowd hype in between songs. the beat is what started hiphop. and b4 u talk isht i'll say i'm not NYC i'm Richmond Va i just know my hiphop. peace

Shut up fag.

ITS FUNNY CAUSE YOU KNOW WHAT A REAL LOSER IS? ANY GROWN MAN WHO SUCKS ANOTHER GROWNS MAN DICK SO I GUESS IF 50 CENT CAME OUT WITH PANTIES YOU'D BUY SOME AND WEAR THEM RIGHT? SOUNDS LIKE THE TYPE OF NIGGA BACK IN 99 WHEN WE HAD THE Y2K SHUTDOWN SCARE THIS NIGGA WENT AND STOCKED UP ON SUMMERS EVE DOUCHE AND TAMPONS... WHAT A BITCH. YEA SHAKEEM IM TALKIN TO YOU FAR AS THE HATE SHIT NEVER THAT. I WAS A DIE HARD 50 CENT FAN FROM BACK WHEN HE DROPPED HOW TO ROB, HIS UNDERGROUNG MIXTAPES AND ALL THAT SHIT. THEN THE NIGGA SOLD A FEW MIL AND DECIDED HE IS THE KING OF RAP AND HE CAN DROP A BULLSHIT ALBUM SUCH AS THE MASSACRE AND STILL KEEP ME AS A FAN. BUT THESE INTERNET TOUGH GUYS ARE FUNNY BITCH NIGGA WOULDNT THROW RICE AT WEDDING. AND RAP ORIGINATED FROM BLUES ANYBODY BLUES TOOK MANY ANGLES FROM DIFFERENT VIEWPOINTS IN LIFE WHETHER IT WAS HEARTBREAK, FINANCIAL SITUATIONS, LONLINESS, FAMILY TROUBLES, ANYTHING. THEY INCORPORATED THAT INTO RHYMING OVER HARD PERCUSSION, GUITAR AND BASS.
BUT IT WAS CALLED BLUES THEN IT WAS TAKEN AND SPEEDED UP AND THE RHYMES WERE SPOKEN AT A GREATER PACE. AND ITS ALOT OF ASSHOLES THAT KEEP CALLING RAP AND HIP HOP THE SAME THING, ITS NOT YOU CANT SAY THAT A TRIBE CALLED QWEST CAN BE CLASSIFIED AS RAP, YOU CANT. YOU CANT SAY THAT YOUNG JEEZY IS HIP HOP, THERE IS A DIFFERENCE. RAP IS MORE LIKE STREET POETRY ITS DARK, GRIMEY, VIOLENT, YET INTRIGUING BUT DOES NOT ALWAYS SEND A POSITIVE MESSAGE. WHILE HIP HOP LEANS MORE TOWARD ENLIGHTENING AND ENTERTAINING THE LISTENER AND USES MORE CREATIVITY. SOME MCS SUCH AS NAS, OUTKAST, KANYE, MOSDEF, TALIB KWELI AND OTHERS INCORPORATE BOTH. BUT THE WAY IT IS NOW YOU DEPEND ON A SIMPLE ASS BOUNCY BEAT AND A DUMB ASS DANCE, AND CATCHY HOOK IN ORDER TO SELL RECORDS. THE MASSES PREFER YOU TO BE ANIMATED AS OPPOSED TO BEING A REAL MC. PEOPLE SAY HIP HOP IS DEAD BECAUSE ARE LOSING HIP HOP TO GIMMICKS AND THE CLUB.

FUCK YOU DICKALECT I MEAN DIALECT YOU WISH YOU WAS HUSTLIN ANYWHERE FUCK BOY ASS NIGGA NEW YORK AINT COMIN BACK BITCH SOUTH RUNNIN SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!

The Niggas that did Rappers Delight must be the first bitters two. Hell as far I know every song blues or otherwise had rhymes in it. So does that mean New York should get all the credit or black people as a whole or do you niggas think about yourselfs or the greater good you tell me.

And I Got people in NY,NJ,Detroit,Maryland all who grand or grea grandparent came from the N.O. GA,TN,KY,SC,NC,TX,FLA,and MISS, so half of you nigga might be related to me cause my family deeper than porn pussy.
