As most of you may know, The Roots set off their star-studded Def Jam celebration with two nights at Radio City Music Hall last week.
Thursday night was supposed to be "the rabbit out of the hat," dedicated to the late, great J Dilla, but was instead plagued with sound failure and no-shows (Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco to name a COUPLE). However, some of the show's tricks were saved with performances by Nas and old schooler Big Daddy Kane. DJ Jazzy Jeff worked the turntables, Common worked out a high-strung performance of "Testify," "Go," and "I Used to Love H.E.R.", and Talib Kweli's set was well done.
The Roots set off the Friday half of the show with a 6th Avenue entrance, energetically parading down the isle as Black Thought spit "Duck Down" into a bullhorn (and kept the lyrics going hard throughout the rest of the show). The hip-hop circus simmered down with a performance by Mos Def, who then spit "Ms. Fat Booty."
R&B duo J. Davey and neo-soul crooner Bilal followed, preceding a powerful performance of "Next Lifetime" by the hot-mess hippie Erykah Badu, who most likely pulled off such a show due to nostalgia for her "turned out" (as she once put it) ex-man Common ("turned out" ain't the word. His Resurrection days consisted of loose jeans, loose tees, and fitteds. Imagine that).
Dave Chappelle did his thing drug-free. Jay-Z hit the stage with a closing performance, and, quite expectedly, took the audience by storm.
Word is ?uestlove, who kept it official on the drums the whole way through was disappointed by all the no-shows who let him down. LaDiva ROC should be ashamed of himself.

Damn bootleggers.
Got me waiting on that new Bilal something serious.
(I'll spare you all from my REDMAN rant, ooops. FREE REDMAN!)
nigga is in the pen?
Kweli is the nicest MC to ever come out of BK.
JAY-Z IS THE BEST
The Roots can do no wrong
"swoop down on the industry
like a bird of prey
my stances got stamina
your verses lack vertebre"
-kweli
This is what we need right here. I can't wait for The Roots' album to drop and please believe I'm going to BUY it LEGALLY.
Mos def makes Talib on every track
there's no way on god's green earth
kweli the best out of BK
he's not the best in Black star
is Big Daddy Kane from BK
if so he's the best outa BK
big up to BK
Just copped the Jordans 21's with the
Clev Cavalier colors, more fire!
Mos def does what? Kweli will eat Mos alive lyrically. You're talking about a whole different era if you bring Kane into this.
Kane already proved himself. But Kweli is definitely the best out of BK in his era.
the concert was excellent!!! i attended on thurday...nas killed it. common did his thing...roots like usual..the best...and most important...big daddy kane tore it down!! it's sad that the writer of this blog considers kane an "old schooler"...dude helped pioneer in what it is to be smooth & sexy while still repping the hood, with a lyrical tongue that will cut many in half!! it was the type of concert nyc and hip hop needed..
oh shyt!! no disrespect..kweli did his thing with out question...damn..no disrespect..
Kweli the best? nah, Did'nt he have a show where he forgot the lyrics to his own song not too long ago.
Jay the best from BK.
True this\ The streets schooled us to spend our money foolish\ bond with jewelers\ and watch for intruders.
If kweli was that nice how come at least 1 million other people dont agree?
The boy nice i dont take nothing from him is just that he aint the best out of BK. AZ is another one that can be considered but ya'll niggas still sleeping...
Jay-Z fans arent in love with his lyrical ability, they're in love with his swagger, persona and voice. Because if you cycle through hovs raps, how many times has he actually made you go "WOW" off something purely lyrical? Something with depth and no comedic punchline.
Straight spitters arent valuable in today's industry. Kweli doesnt have nor does he need a gimmick like the rest of these rappers. He's a straight spitter and nobody can touch him.
Shit, Kweli and Big-L should rule the top two spots on the MC list.
can we get show like that artists wise in atlanta. new york dont appreciate a show like that, hell next week somebody will prolly start beefing. lmao
Why the fuck is everything about Jay-z?
Check out my music at hotmc.com!
Everybody wants to be a rapper.
OK FIRST OFF WE AINT TALKING BOUT SALES WE TALKING BOUT SKILLS. LYRICALLY TALIB IS THE BEST FROM BROOKLYN EVER. (AND I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN FLATBUSH, BROOKLYN) BUT OVERALL HE IS NOT THE BEST. WHEN I SAY OVERALL, I MEAN FLOW, MATERIAL, DELIVERY, BREATH CONTROL. I WOUD SAY ALL TOGETHER IT WOULD BE B.I.G., JAY-Z AND AZ. IN THAT ORDER BUT EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THEY OPINION I JUST HATE WHEN PEOPLE USE SALES AS A REASON.
The Legendary Roots crew are one of the most consistent live performers in Hiphop history. They can do no wrong.
The Roots, Nas--->Most awaited albums of the year.
Get off Nappy Roots dicks!
The Roots r overated.I think you all are hypin their album up to much.I seen them live and have gotten opinions from other ppl about their live show.Way overated. Not bad,but for sure overated.
I don't think Talib is the best lyricist from Brooklyn. The #1 spot belongs to Mos Def. Talib is #2. And Mos has one of the best flows, delivery and content. He dosen't get the respect he's due because he aint allways talkin about clappin somebody, bangin some broad or wearing a ridiculous amount of jewelry. I can't believe somebody said the roots are overrated. Thats just plain crazy. If more brotha's carried books than guns hip hop might not suck as much as it does right now, but since record sales are the only things that matter we'll just keep shooting 50 ni@@as per album. Way to go hip hop Keep setting that positive example.
P.S. the roots overrated, get outta here.
Damn I wish I was there!! Ok lets start this off by sayin The Roots are the best thing in hiphop as fars as balancing out all the commercial with their own side of pure authentic music. I think it is best they dont go 3x platinum.? Because being that it seems not too many heads pay attention to em (except us) they stay hungry and creative. And nobody bites they style. AS soon as they blow every rapper is gonna follow suit! Imagine Dipset on some real hiphop shit??? coofies and all!! And for the comment bout Talib and Jay. Remember Jay z said it himself he dumbed down his lyrics to double his dollars! Im definitely sure he can rhyme more complex but he would be exactly financially where talib is! I watched the mtv list of the greatest mc's and one thing they said that stuck in my head.! ?? They were talking bout all these credible mc's and how they could possibly flip it like jay. Then someone said why didn't they? If they could all rap better than jay why didn't they? Every year! How many fans can say that their favorite rapper gets better every year and drops a album every year!!?? Jay says he lives adrug dealers dream shit I know every rapper would luv to be in his place from just rapping! Even 50 wishes he gets the respect jay gets lyrically! Even those rappers who dislike him respect him lyrically! TRUTH.com
MAAAN FUCK FLOP CITY. SOUFF IN DIS BIT.LOL LUV HOW WE GOT YALL SICK.WE ALL ON YALL RADIO AND U GETS NO PLAY DOWN HERE LOL.
R.I.P. FLOP CITY!
Can't wait till The Roots and nas drop theirs! Yall better not front!! Buy the cd seriously not the bootleg! Bootleg 50 or dipshitty set but not the real music!
Caff u 100% right. Its not to many niggas that you have to stop and rewind in the middle of the song and be like what the fuck this nigga just say."I dumbed down for my audience to double my dollars
They criticized me for it yet they all yell "HOLLA!" If skills sold truth be told i'd probably be Lyrically Talib Kweli, truthfully i wanna rhyme like Commen Sense but i did five mil, i aint been rhymin like Common since When your cents got that much in common
And you been hustlin since, your inception
Fuck perception go with what makes sense
Since I know what I'm up against
We as rappers must decide what's most impor-tant
And I can't help the poor if I'm one of them
So I got rich and gave back, to me that's the win/win
So next time you see the homey and his rims spin
Just know my mind is workin just like them...
... rims, that is
".
TEXXXAS
SHUT THA FUCK UP NIGGA, U MUST B CRAZY, FIRST OF ALL WE DONT PLAY YA MUSIC EVEN THOUGH YA JOKERS RUN THA RADIO, YA SOUTH NIGGAS R SO INTO YA SELVES YA THINK YA HOT, IN REALITY THA REST OF THA WORLD IS LAUGHIN AT YA. THA SOUTH MUSIC IS GARBAGE, YA DIRTY NIGGAS EAT GARBAGE, FUCK THA SOUTH... NYC TILL I DIE!!!!!!!!!!
"The Roots r overated.I think you all are hypin their album up to much.I seen them live and have gotten opinions from other ppl about their live show.Way overated. Not bad,but for sure overated."
Whaaaat? this might be the non statment of the year. You got opinions from other ppl? I get mine from me CHUMP. And I've seen the Roots at least 4 times at the 9:30 club alone. They're shit is not to be messed with.
The Roots is better than that bitchass Wack-a-Faggot!
Which is Roc-a-FellaZ!
If Lupe and Kanye had shown up no doubt this would have been a bangin concert for real. I'm sure it was anyway but I'm waitin on that Lupe joint the kid can flow.
Who the best MC to come outta BK?
Personally I think its gotta be Biggie hands down everyday. Talib and Mos is way more conscious and their raps have a message but Biggie cracks me up everytime I hear his shit. One of the funniest niggas to hold a mic. BIG - Brooklyn's Finest.
The Roots is better than that bitchass Wack-a-Faggot!

This just proves that coon ass niggers cant read for shame!
Coon-Ass-Niggers : Say what boy? How you figure I can't read? I misread what homey was talkin bout, at any rate, I'm the Teacher and you're the punkass, wet behind the ears student so don't talk back at me kid.
hoodlum : Yeah son gettin that money up is always a struggle! Get your head down boy it'll come. Yeah I still visit my bredren in Southwyck, my Moms still there, my cousins, my manz still stay there so I'm there a fair bit. Its good to be off the block though son for real.
So whats lesson 5 for the third time dumbass?!
most awaited album of the year- The Middle Passage, Immortal Technique. and for u people who base an Mc's calibur on their record sales here's a quote for u. "if u go platinum it's got nothing to do w/ luck it just means that a million people are stupid as fuck"-Technique. the nicest mc outa NYC period.
Coon-Ass-Niggers : Kid, that depends on what you want it to be. Yesterday it was tryin to open your mind a little bit and dispell some of the bullshit generalisations you made about black people. Today's lesson will be, why are you a black man callin your own race 'coon ass niggers'? It seems to me like you blacker than night and yet you still tryin to let your inner white man get out?
JoeRipps : I co-sign what you say about Immortal Technique, I will cop the album for sure, Biggie is/was the nicest outta NYC though son, lets be real.
Sohh what's good? I wanted to go to that Roots show but I missed it. They are respected members of the Hip-Hop community! A real band with live instrumentation not sampling old classics every other song. Ill lyrical content and a brother who beatboxes! (Is Rahzel still down?) Real music! I can't wait for my man Nas to drop his joint! Kweli is ill too, but I don't know if he's the best to ever come out of BK. He has to put in more work to be regarded that highly. I agree with what somebody said earlier its between Kane, BIG, and Jay.
