You actually make a good point about the whole rap industry slippin a little bit. I looked at soundscan last week and to my surprise Bubba Sparx and Dem Franchise Boyz shit was flopping. BOSTON (AP) -- Prosecutors on Monday said two 19-year-old men committed the "intentional, cold-blooded execution" of four young men in a makeshift recording studio last December, and hinted that part of the motive may have been the theft of three guns.

Calvin Carnes Jr. and Robert Turner were kept in a side room during their arraignment in Dorchester District Court on Monday -- out of sight of the more than 50 friends and relatives of the shooting victims who packed the courtroom. Pleas of not guilty were entered on their behalf.

Carnes was held without bail, and bail was set at $1 million cash for Turner.

Assistant District Attorney David Meier said the arrests came after a six-month police investigation and an ongoing grand jury probe. He said Carnes and Turner took three guns from the studio and made repeated unsuccessful attempts to sell them in the months after the slayings. He did not say explicitly whether the theft of the guns was a motive, and refused to comment after the hearing.

However, Carnes' court-appointed attorney, Stephen Weymouth, said he believed prosecutors were alleging that theft of guns at least partially led to the shootings.

Carnes is charged with four counts of first-degree murder, four counts of armed robbery and two other gun charges. Turner is charged with four counts of being an accessory after the fact and identical gun charges.

Killed in the Dec. 13 attacks in Boston's Dorchester section were Edwin Duncan, 21, who lived above the studio; Jihad Chankhour, 22; Christopher Vieira, 19; and Jason Bachiller, 21, who lived in Wakefield. Duncan, Vieira and Bachiller were members of a rap group called Graveside.

Meier said the two defendants had been with the four men in the basement on the night of the killings. Carnes knew Viera owned a semiautomatic handgun, and also that two other guns were stored in the basement, Meier said.

At some point during the evening, Carnes took Viera's gun, Meier said.

The events afterward were unclear because there were no living witnesses other than the defendants, Meier said.

A witness reported seeing a man fitting Carnes' description leaving the home and getting into a car the night of the killings, Meier said.

I am sitting hear in my southeast D.C. apartment and I am thinking about the D.O.C.'s classic hit entitled "The Formula". I am wondering; what is formula to mend the broken path of Hip Hop.

The much criticized "south" is reminding the "heavy hip-hop heads" that having fun with hip hop use to be a very strong and successful
element of the music.

Remember old school terms like "rock the party" and "move the crowd". The south has capitalized on bringing back a very basic element of Hip Hop, which is to have some fun with the music and get people to join in on the good time. I remember when I was about 7 or 8 years old and DC was bumpin to cuts like Salt N Pepper's "I take Your man"; Dougie Fresh and Slick Rick's "The Show"; LL's "Rock the Bells"; everything on Rakim's "Paid in Full" album or De La Soul's "Me, Myself and I" hit. Hip Hop was so much fun when I was a little kid. I forgot the name of Rob Base club and street Banger (you know, "I want to Rock right now"). I don't know if these artists ever sold much, but I do know those cats rocked DC along with so many other Hip Hop Artists.

The time period of Hip Hop I loved the most is the Public Enemy, KRS 1, Kool G-Rap, Big Daddy Kane, NWA and the Ghetto Boy's era. Hip Hop was pure rebellion back then and I loved it. I loved the fact that you had young comrades in the background like Tupac and a teenager from Queens New York name Nasir Jones, as well as Jay-Z and Common who were hip hop babies eating this hip hop food that was going to nurse them into full grown relevant Hip Hop Artists. Further, you still had some feel good music with Naughty By Nature's "You down wit OPP; Yeah you know me". I am sorry I have forgotten the names of so many of the classics. I won't go into the Biggie Smalls-Tupac era because it has been discussed over and over again.

However, no-one ever talked about record sales (meaning the fans) because the music was giving us a purpose and a supplementary soul to our very own soul. Hip Hop was ours. Hip Hop was Black. The spirit was Black. Today I don't know what it is.

According to what I read this morning, Cameron posted at 113,000 in sales. Many people will consider his project a failure. Mobb Deep (who album really isn't bad) failed to reach the top 50 in sales 3 weeks after their Debut CD on G-Unit.

I know the corporate' masters that control these cats are recognizing that the American public is forfeiting their option to purchase Hip Hop/Rap music when presented an opportunity. The southern artists when compared to Music industry as whole are performing competently but not dominantly (in terms of sales).

The questions become will people go back to a Hip Hop formula that worked for 20 years which is a MIXTURE of Fun, Social-Political/revolutionary and Gangsta's narratives or will everyone stick to the current failed formula. Will we see a diversity of creative and quality Hip Hop music or will everyone continue to read the same play book.

Many have stated that the south is the people's choice and I am not sure that is true. The south from my vantage point appears to be Viacom's choice (this is not intended to be a disrespectful comment to those brothers).

Our brilliant brother 50 cent, in my opinion, now must recognize that he was a novelty to white people and that greatly fueled his popularity and record sales.

Wait-Wait;

That does not mean he was not and is not an incredible talent. It mean's when the most popular white artist (Em) arguably in the world introduced a Blackman from New York (The Trend Setters) who had been shot 9 times (o.k. maybe 3 ) and lived, and at some point in life had been incarcerated; WHITE PEOPLE were intrigued; I was intrigued. Once you heard his story followed by his music you wanted get to know him better.

50 understood his appeal better than any white man at Interscope and he brilliantly marketed himself. He is an American Business Success story. However, 50's over-saturation for the last 4 years now have many white people feeling like they know him and now the intrigue has dissipated. Think about it, you have heard 50 over the last 3 to 4 years constantly on the radio or television in some way, shape or form. I can't think of any period of time since 2003 I have not heard from him.

Now the public may have "50 fatigue". This is why I think his artists are in a minor slump (Sales should be totally thorn out of the Hip Hop equation if you ask me).

I think Jay-Z is another brilliant businessman who has had the ability to have the people wanting more because he does not over-saturate himself to the American public. At almost 40, he has made himself the Hip Hop Ideal and the standard of excellent. Even if you don't like the brother you have to give him props for being the Icon of HIP HOP PERFECTION.

Anyway, what is the Formula for hip hop as a whole to become a real force again (if you accept the premise that it is no longer the force it use to be). Right now I am letting my "ole school Go-Go" carry the day for me.

As usual, I wrote a book. I think because I am actually working on my dissertation and because of that it is very difficult for me to say anything without writing forever.
