Money talks and Fat Joe and Jadakiss are listening. As you may have heard, the two M.C.'s have sold their soul to the devil, literally, and will appear on amateur porn star Paris Hilton's debut album. The track that they're featured on, called Fighting Over Me, is a sappy pop tune about how poor Paris has all these boys fighting over her attention, or some such nonsense.

When I first hear about this little collaboration, I was all ready to defend Joe and Kiss against all of the G-Unit groupies who were quick to point out that even the most street M.C.'s sell out and appear on shallow radio tunes. But then I remembered that little incident last year where Paris's spoiled, skanky ass mustered up the nerve to drop the N-bomb in public, and my argument went right out the window.
I'm sorry guys, but a fat check can only explain so much. I can understand working with a wack artist for a quick buck, or to get your name out there, but there is no excuse for working with a spoiled, overpriviliged brat who would come out her face with a word she has no business thinking, much less using. And how did she get a pass for that incident anyway? If you ask me, one of these female rap chicks who talk all that shit in their rhymes need to run up on this chick and give her some sensitivy training.

Hip Hop really needs an identity and a mission. I did not know about this white woman throwing around the term Nigger, but many white people view us as that anyway when in reality they are closer to definition of a nigger (Ignorance)than anyone else. If she used that word on that basis alone the brothers should not work with her. Also, there is no way Em should have gotten a free pass for his nigger comments. We are a forgiving people with everyone else except with ourselves.
Back to my topic: Hip hop right now is really struggling for an Identity. Back in the day brothers would hop on various joints with R & B cats and at times, with some whiteboys and was not a big deal.
The south is producing this kind of feel good music (I am not really a fan of it but give those brothers credit for creating their own version of Hip Hop) and someone is collecting some nice cash off it. I say someone because many times these cats are not the one's profiting regardless of what they say. The hard core joints that Jada is known for is sort of struggling for mainstream recognition (although I love Jada's work) and therefore are not generating the revenue in the world of corporate America to sustain itself.
The once powerhouse G-Unit I think are quietly rethinking about recreating their approach to the game (No Pund intended) given their perceived fall from rap dominance into what appears now to be rap mediocrity, particularly with 50 placing such a high premium on sales. By the way I feel bad for Prodigy and Havoc only moving 110,000 and being associated with Interscope. I am afraid these cats are going to made scapegoats for G-Unit's decline and are going to be dropped. I wish they could have signed with someone else but they didn't and probably couldn't, but that is a story for another time.
Afterthought: Game getting kicked out of G-Unit initially looked like career suicide for him but now it is starting to look like a blessing. Let's see if he blows this opportunity to rise to the top of the interscope rap empire.
So my reaction is in a form of a question. What are the hip hop standards. Is it all about sales. Can you only do joints with certain people who are not considered to be in the Hip Hop community (which actually doesn't exsist, we have a loose culture but not a community). It's just that we are really in a Hip Hop identity crises. The corporations are determining the course of everyone's actions. Is HIP HOP no longer a free voice and a movement?

Thus, we saw the beginnings of what I call "Club Mobb", a group that had had their street cred tested so many times (see: unfavorable incidents with TruLife and Keith Murray), that they figured '**** it.....let's take *****s to the club' and the results ranged from dope ("Burn"), to dope-once-it-grows-on-you ("Got It Twisted"), to horrid ("Hey Luv" feat. 112).
So what exactly happened?
Most people don't realize that the magic of Prodigy (and Mobb for that matter), lied in Prodigy's first bars. Literally......Prodigy has some of the most classic and memorable first bars in hip hop history, and that made for their best singles. Don't believe me?

You can't find it, 'cause its not there.
For better or worse depending on how you look at it, Havoc is now the best MC in Club Mobb. I take my hat off to him. Dude sounds hungrier than ever. And although P still has his moments (his verse on "Capital P, Capital H" is dope), for most of the album he's the same rambling, non-rhyming, unfocused guy that he's been for the past few years. He really sounds clinically depressed. It's sad.
So aside from its obvious artistic shortcomings, what does G-Unit have to do with people's hate for Blood Money?

Now personally, I have no problem with an artist selling out, or cashing in (however you look at it)....but I understand the ramifications of it. And the fact remains that when you sell out: 1) it damn sure better be financially worth it so that you NEVER have to sell out again, and 2) your post sell-out records better be artistically ****ing BULLETPROOF. I mean, you better make the record of a lifetime or else there will be hell to pay.
And from the looks of things, Mobb may fail on both counts.
Cats are trashing the record left and right. Most die-hard Mobb fans have written them off by now. As dope as "Put 'Em In Their Place" is it ain't gon' get the 106 and TRL'ers, so those diamond numbers they were shooting for are looking more like Yayo's.
Not to place all the blame on 50, because truthfully, the songs he's featured on are among the best on the album. And I always thought "Outta Control" was dope, because it felt like a natural progression for Club Mobb.....it was the grown and sexy Club Mobb and it knocked. The same can't be said for "Give It To Me" and "Backstage Pass." They are club attempts that sound forced and honestly, are downright laughable.
I will always hold Hav and P near and dear to my heart, and they will always be viewed as hip-hop legends to me because of their first 3 albums (honorable mentions go to H.N.I.C and Free Agents tho). But I gotta call a spade a spade.
For longtime Mobb Deep fans, "Blood Money" pretty much confirmed our worst fears of what we thought a G-Unit/Mobb Deep partnership would bring forth:

It may be time for us to engage in grown men and women activities by collectively purchasing stock in these various corporations who have a choke hold on the artists creativity and financial earnings. The artists are constantly playing defense.
I like how 50 and Kanye have put themselves in an autonomous position. I think when those brothers are working with others it is by choice more than anything else. Their success have earned them that right to be selective. I think you have to look over a person total collection of work before we just recklessly label them as this and that.
I will be one of the happiest brothers alive (if I am still living) when brothers stop looking at units as a measure of success. I really respect those cats regardless of where they are from who are simply lovers of the art form and comform to the tenets of the art form.
A Hip Hop conference for the supporters of Hip Hop is needed. I think hip hop is really close to going the way of jazz (although I hope I am wrong).

They worked with "Paris the racist" too. If you're going to use that reason for being mad at them.
Many of you also use their beef with 50 Cent, siting hypocrasy as a reason for backlash. You can't really use that excuse either. I can't clearly say about Fat Joe, but Jada on the other hand, has done the R&B guest spots (not his own songs), yet he is able to keep his same swagger. But maybe that's what makes him a talent. He's able to go out of his element, yet stay street oriented at the same time. When it's time to do Jada and get his album going, as you notice the people he does collabos with generally don't show up on his albums. He keeps it him.
Of course, you say they should't have dissed 50 for doing pop or love songs, when they jump on something like this Paris track. It's not really the same. Aside from them just being a guest feature (and not their own song), they aren't doing some sing songy syrupy hooks. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but 50 has always done the sing songy flow/hook. They (Jada & Joe) haven't and they don't do that. So you can't use that either. Obviously, the beef is what cause you guys to act the way you do towards them anyway. So it's no suprise there.
Bottom line, you don't hvae to like it or listen to it. Nobody's forcing you. However, don't get mad at these cats and act all pissy, about a choice they made. When you guys weren't supporting them and dissing them way before this song. Don't act like you're so concerned for Hip Hop and it's artist now.

He's able to go out of his element, yet stay street oriented at the same time. When it's time to do Jada and get his album going, as you notice the people he does collabos with generally don't show up on his albums. He keeps it him.
Of course, you say they should't have dissed 50 for doing pop or love songs, when they jump on something like this Paris track. It's not really the same. Aside from them just being a guest feature (and not their own song), they aren't doing some sing songy syrupy hooks. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but 50 has always done the sing songy flow/hook. They (Jada & Joe) haven't and they don't do that. So you can't use that either. Obviously, the beef is what cause you guys to act the way you do towards them anyway. So it's no suprise there.
Bottom line, you don't hvae to like it or listen to it. Nobody's forcing you. However, don't get mad at these cats and act all pissy, about a choice they made. One thing you have to learn is, no matter what type of rapper you are, there is always going to be a radio/club/chick song period. That is the way the industry is right now period. Bottom line, all rappers have done some form of a "pop" song (as you guys call it).
What does the music you have to do with being street? Music (the music you make) is industry related. Rap is something you do, it's an occupation. That is how they earn their pay check. The industry has nothing to do with the streets. However, what song you're on or who you decide to collaborate with, his nothing to do with your street value or orientation. It doesn't mean you're ny less street or anything.
Y'all don't have to like the song (nobody is telling you to buy it, and it ain't for you anyway). The thing is, Jada hasn't changed. Regardles of this Paris track, he is still going to spit the same street, punchlines, metophors ect....this song didnt change that.

Actually, yes there is a difference. For one, I said "there is a difference between being a guest artist on sombdoy else's song, compared to doing a song of your own." As far as doing quote unquote "pop" songs. Joe does a lot of those (at least in the last 3-4 years), although Jada trys his hand at those, he does very few, far and in between.
Even when he does do a "radio friendly" track, it's not exactly that either. They're also very differnt in terms of lyrics, structure, and production. That's the thing, he never really changes, even if it is a radio friendly or pop song. The only thing you could really say, is that he has features or collabos with everybody else. When it comes to himself, he never really changes.
Yes, I am aware that 50 does get criticism for being radio friendly. But, once again, the fans (well internet fans) play a big role in that. They pick and choose and play favorites. For the last year and ahlf, they hate Jada and Joe, simply because they had beef (which was not even real) with a more popular rapper. Which in turn is all the stupidness you see right now on this blog.
