No disrespect cuz if were all about lyricism Pac would not be on the list-I'm stating facts. But Pac is a great MC-he had all the other components to be considered great-he made classic records. But so did Jay...he really did lock down like 8 summers. He released great ALBUMS and i've seen Cassidy freestyle battle niggas in front of the Temple U cafeteria, he's nice but until he makes a CLASSIC album let alone 3 you should really never discuss great lyricism again.

I think at the end of the day if Jay were dead, he'd be #1 in a lot of niggas' eyes...Everyone on that list transcended just lyrics and beats, they were at least good in every other element it takes to make a great MC.

And we gotta get over the fact MTV took Yo! off the air...they fucked up TEN YEARS AGO(!) but hiring people like Sway brought back hip hop credibility and they have cats that work there that are respected by their peers (people that write and report for them, not Clue). Considering Rap City is still on the air, and they won't even show De La soul or Little Brother lets me know their credibility has left the building.

Jay-Z got the most classic albums and largest amount of material that is hot. Reasonable Doubt, Volume 1, Volume 2, Blueprint, Black Album are all classic.

Alotta cats are gonna AUTOMATICALLY say Jay ain't number 1, but I'm a dude who believes Jay-Z would be number one IF HE WERE DEAD. If somebody came out rapping like Big Daddy Kane or Rakim RIGHT NOW, would cats claim they're the best, let alone listen to they album? No, cats would clown on 'em because rap has gotten BETTER since then. NOT the CONTENT, but the actual TALENT has improved drastically, from flow and delivery to wit and wordplay. Also, in the discussion of great MC's, he or she had to be able to dominate both on albums and in freestyle ability. This is why Jay should be crowned the best. The flow, the lyrical ability (which most sleep on nowadays), the great song making skills and the freestyle talent makes Jay the (arguably) most consistent and well-rounded MC ever. Im not saying he's the best in every category, but he is in the top 3-5 at least in every category. When you compare classics, Jay's stand up and compete at the highest level against every MC on that list and ever to come out.

1) The Black Album sold 3 mil without most people even knowing it was out. I'm a Jay-Z fan, and I didn't even know until they said it on the radio the day of. By what definition is one considered a "lyricist"? Lyricist has become one of those words that get OVER USED to much that it loses meaning. Listen to your music people. At lot of times people are being considered a lyricist and they're purposely trying to be "deep". They're forcing it and you can tell.

Nas has spit some real fire in his career, and I ain't even a Nas fan. However, there have been more occasions than I can count where the nigga was spitting total bullshit, and it was obvious that he was trying to sound deep. Hell look as Talib Kweli's last album. It was okay, but wasn't anything that deep about it. It was just non-aggresive music from a respectful black man.

There is an old saying that me and my friends have: if an artist was so deep, you wouldn't like him, because most people wouldn't get it. Niggas buy music that makes them feel smart, and makes them feel like a "True Hip-Hop Head". Most of the time you niggas can't even recite a deep verse, and break it down to its deepest meaning.

Wyclef Jean("The Carnival" and "The Masquerade" are classic solo albums in my book, his shit with the Fugees was dope too)

Jay-Z is tight as hell on the word play and imagery. But he shouldn't be number 1.

Here's my top 10 list and a brief explanation as to why.

1) 2Pac-Not a "pure" lyricist, but an all around rapper. Love songs, war music, and just about anything else under the sun.
2) Rakim-Changed rap from party anthems to grimey street lyrics. First "pure" lyricist.
3) Scarface-The nigga has held the southern crown for over a decade. Second best story teller behind Slick Rick.
4) Nas-One of the last "pure" lyricists.
5) KRS One-The only rapper that I have heard that will school you and check your ass all at the same time. Check out Edutainment.
6) Notorious B.I.G.-That nigga was the best "pure" lyricist. The only reason he is not higher on the list is because he died with only 2 albums out.
7) Andre 3000-Niggaz goin disagree, but listen to everything before the Love Below. Matter of fact, just read his lyrics online with no beat.
8) Eminem-It hurts me to put him in the top 10, but the white boy spit fire. Read the words to his song.
9) Ice Cube-No words. Just listen to Predator and Death Certificate. Anything before Peace and War.
10) Jay-Z-Even though Jay-Z is the tightest rapper alive, he comes in at #10 on my list. Reasonable Doubt to Blueprint are classics. The Black Album will be labeled a classic in a couple of years. The ONLY reason I can't put him higher is because he does a lot of "biting". As far as lyrics and storytelling ability, he's one of the best.

Big Daddy Kane, Big L, Big Pun, and Slick Rick all deserve due respect. But it was only 10 spots.

Big when he was still alive he said jay was better then him .So if he ain't better then big he is the closest one .But personally Jay-Z has been the King of Ny for over the last 8-9 years now.Nas is the only rapper alive that is even in the same league.Much props to krs ,rakim,kane some of the greats and I would have to throw face in there and snoop after cube for the west .Dre from kast was in the honorable mention for the folks that didn't check it out .

I'm just coming into this. I'll say what I've said for years; Rakim will always be number one to me, because there was everyone before Rakim and everyone after him. I don't know if I disagree with any of the top 10 list, though I don't know if I would put LL in there. I've just never been into L where I would say "Yo. I gotta go get that new LL record." Then again, I don't know who I would replace him with. Big Daddy Kane? Definitely top 5 in my opinion. Everytime I hear "Ain't no half-steppin or Raw", I remember hip-hop at it's greatest.

I saw whoever had the greatest groups of all time above. I can't remember if A Tribe Called Quest was in there. If not, they definitely belong.

I was never a D-12 fan, but that's somebody's son, brother, friend and father, and that hurts all around.

I think that, if you are going to create a list like this, you need a set of criteria. For greatest MC, you need to look at :

(1) Flow - how they say what they say, from an auditory standpoint
(2) Lyrical Depth - how varied they pull off what they pull off - we're talking subject matter here (can you go beyond talking about "the streets")
(3) Stylistic variety - can you do a club song, a radio song, AND a street song? This is different from "2" - you can make a song about "hoes" that fit all four of these.
(4) Charisma - how they say what they say, in terms of word choice, wit, etc.
(5) Sales - the above three don't matter if noone hears it
(6) Body of Work - one or two hot albums does not make one the greatest. God bless the dead, but I'm looking at BIG here.

Noone is going to be the best at all six. Black Thought, for example, probably has Juvenile beat at Lyrical Depth, but Juvie annihilates him in sales. If we look at all categories, though, looking only at those that are at least okay in all categories... I think Jay actually does have it. Tupac, LL Cool J, and Nas all do well in each category off teh top of my head (Nas being kinda weak in Stylistic stuff... outside of "oochie Wally", what could he do in the clubs?), but I think that Jay-Z may be the best total package.

Okay, I had to really sit down and think about this. Before I begin, here's the things I think any rapper that could be called "Greatest Rapper Of All Time" /MUST/ have:

(1) Flow - how they say what they say, from an auditory standpoint
(2) Lyrical Depth - how varied they pull off what they pull off - we're talking subject matter here (can you go beyond talking about "the streets")
(3) Stylistic variety - can you do a club song, a radio song, AND a street song? This is different from "2" - you can make a song about "hoes" that fit all four of these.
(4) Charisma - how they say what they say, in terms of word choice, wit, etc.
(5) Sales - the above three don't matter if noone hears it
(6) Body of Work - one or two hot albums does not make one the greatest. God bless the dead, but I'm looking at BIG here.

I was going to add another category - Long-term impact, to cover people like E-40, but everyone that made my Top 10 did have an impact.

I ended up with 16 rappers with /NO/ weaknesses. From there, the Top 10, in my opinion, were:

(1) Jay-Z
(2) Tupac
(3) Rakim
(4) LL Cool J
(5) Nas
(6) Ice Cube
(7) Eminem
(8) Snoop Dogg
(9) Big Boi
(10) Run

The other six that I felt had no weaknesses were Andre 3000, DMC, Eve, DMX, Q-Tip, and Will Smith. And before the hate begins, let's be real - the fact that Will Smith may not make the kind of music /YOU/ like doesn't mean that he isn't one of the best ever, or that he excelled in every category in which they were analyzed.

Just about everyone else I thought of were weak in one category or another. For the record, so you'll know why I didn't include your favorite rapper :) here's the breakdown:

(1) Flow - no eliminations
(2) Lyrical Depth - Method Man, Redman, Mystikal, Juvenile, Ludicris, Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes
(3) Stylistic variety (most of these lack club songs) - Ghostface Killah, Scarface, Chuck D, Raekwon
(4) Charisma - no eliminations
(5) Sales - Common, Black Thought, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Rass Kass, Posdanous, Big Daddy Kane, KRS-One, Jadakiss, E-40
(6) Body of Work - B.I.G. (two spectacular albums is NOT a "body of work" - that's like comparing Van Hunt to Prince), T.I. (two great albums... though I suspect he may make this list at some point),Slick Rick (one spectacular album), Game, Big Pun, D.O.C

I'm also not including, and am surprised noone has mentioned them, the "old school" cats - Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel, Sugar Hill Gang, etc., due to a lack of knowledge of their complete bodies of work.

Almost forgot my ladies list on the side : Lyte and Latifah fall due to sales.

Ironically you were saying that as I listened to Full CLip this morning on the way to work...Guru is not top 10 to me but he's one of the greats. RZA is nice but I would Rae or Ghost before I put RZA up there. Kool G was an honorable mention-since there's only 10 spots not everyone will be happy.

I usually stay away from this argument, because of the same reasons some of the people above have stated. With no clear criteria, it's impossible to say who is the greatest. An even with criteria, it's still subjective to a degree. However, putting MCs like Camron, Papoose, Mike Jones, Saigon, Slim Thug, Chamilionaire, and Juelz Santana on even a list of top 50 MCs is just plain stupid and even a shit for brains imbecilic mute who was born in the year 3006 would know that. With that said here is my commentary( won't call it a list) of some of the best MCs to bless the mic.

Jay-Z saying J isn't the greatest cuz he's a biter is ignorant as hell. It can be argued that he used other peoples lines in maybe what ammounts to 1% of his work. And if you truly listen to music(not skim through it) then you know that's not even his hottest shit. Definitely top 5, probably top three based on every possible criteria except song depth. Pac, Scarface, Nas, Lauren Hill, Kanye, Eminem, and Common are great with this. If you disagree on his songwriting depth, that's up for discussion.

Pac Maybe the greatest songwriter of all time,in any genre based on body of work and influence. Also one of the most charismatic personalities in music history. When it comes to other aspects of being an MC though, I could probably place 50 or more MCS ahead of Pac on lyricism alone, and then another 25 on wit. Plus people always wanna argue about how Pacs music was so uplifting for black people. Rest his soul, but there was nothing uplifting about songs like Toss It Up, Hit Em Up or I Get Around. In my opinion, Pac is a top 5 recording artist/songwriter and due to his influence a top 10 MC.

Who is better than Jigga now?? Pac was a great entertainer and a figure point in hip hop history no doubt but he isnt a high caliber lyricist. MTV isnt hip hop so this list isnt anything to pay any mind to. ANd for that idiot who put juvenile top ten you making the dirty look bad.

Big This dude had the smoothest sick flow I ever heard. Crazy rhyme schemes that he made sound so effortless. It's amazing the damage this man did with only two albums! Out of two albums, It's hard to find bad songs and he lyrically kills every verse. Like Jay, he didn't have songs that were as deep, but he only had two albums to do it and he had enough charisma to make fat look cool. Somebody said people in the South didn't like Big that much. Maybe he wasn't as liked as Pac, but the southern hip hop fans know he was the truth. Top 5 definitely.

Nas/Rakim I put them together because as far as lyrical complexity, they set blueprints for evrerybody else to study. I've never heard a bad verse from Rakim. The patterns he used lyrically sounded so rhythmic that they felt almost sung and way ahead of the time period. His diction, like Nas's is impeccable. If you truly listen to hip hop you know that lyrically things have evolved and cats are more lyrically complex today . Ra could jump in now and still not miss a beat. I'm not sure if he had any flaws as an MC. Rakim pioneered it, but I think the lyrical complexity of today's artists started with Nas. After Illmatic, everybody new that they had to step their lyrical game up to be mentioned in the same breath as God Son. This dude practically slept in the late 90s while other cats jumped position aiming for the top, and then came back and devoured a heavyweight like Jay and made it look easy. The only flaw(if I can call it that) I can touch on with either of these two MCs is the refusal to adapt. And maybe it wasn't so much of a refusal with Nas as it was an inability. For that reason I respect Rakims stylistic choices more. But it seems to me that many times, particulary Nas from 1996 to 2000, both artists seemed to be a step behind stylistically with their music. I think Ra is definitely top 5, maybe top 3 and Nas is capable of top 3 and bordering on top 5.

I thought I taught ya'll that there has to first be a criteria. Fuck MTV they wouldn't know criteria from liberia!
I'm too tired to tell ya'll again but understand the greatest MC's are the ones who embodies most of the total criteria not just some parts.

Ya'll dumb as hell. If you really look at the stats Jigga rightfully deserves the throne. Ya'll to dumb to listen, but his lyrics are complex as hell. Ya'll to busy ridin' the dick of Biggie's punchlines to Understand Jigga's Metaphors. And even if his lyrics sucked, his flow is undeniable. Ya'll throwin up rappers that ya'll personally like, but compare the stats. KRS-ONE may be the number one lyricist ever, but he falls short in other categories. Jay-Z is consistantly in the top 5 for every attribute of a rapper. Roc-a-fella litrally ran the game for years!

Now for all ya'll fags talkin bout he a swagga Jacker because of Cam (Who says things like "Fruity tooty") listen to this. Jigga's first album, wich was arguably his best, has NO JACKING WHAT SO EVER. And that swagga jacker song is like seven minutes long including Cam's shit talking. 7 minutes out of a 13 album career? Fuck outta here.Especially when Cam was jackin too. Jay was just biggin up his brotha.

First off, you can easily argue for this list in this order. And, no matter who would have been put first there would be people arguing against it and giving reasonable arguments.

I do want to say one thing about the "Jay - Z bite so many of Big's lines" thing though. Please listen with an open and realistic mind. First off Jay has an enormous catalogue compared to the Big lines he used so no he didn't bite "60%" of Bigs lyrics. And this is a fact if you are truly listening to the music, most (80 - 90%) not all of Bigs lyrics that Jay used fall into 4 categories:

1)Spit on a freestyle (meaning not an album b/c all of Jays work is off the head) where Jay is using a beat from one of Bigs old songs. Which would make sense. (i.e. Who Shot Ya freestyle)

2)Is the opening line in Jays track that is spoken out of "rythm" with the rest of the song before he begans his own flow. (i.e. Give it to Me)

3)Is a hook from Big that Jay threw in one of his lines, or vice versa, a line from Big that Jay threw in his hook. (i.e. Squeeze 1st or Don't Let Me Die)

4)He shouts Big out in some manner, then goes on to throw one of his lines in song. (i.e. What More Can I Say)

Before someone says why didn't I give more example, its b/c I'm tired of writing. If you are a real hip-hoper just go back and listen. But, you should have known already, the first time you heard it.

Any way my point is he can definitely be argued as #1 just like several others on that list. I also think that others on the list could never be #1 but could be top 10.

And Lastly, SOHH NYC, how can you say that no way Jay could be considered #1 with the likes of Kane, Rakim, and KRS. First off I grew up listening to all of them, I ant the avg. 15-20 year old. Yes in thier time they were hot and still are better than most, but a handful of 3rd generation artist(Jay, Nas, Big, Pac to mention the most affluent) raised the bar, just as Kane, Ra,
KRS and LL (don't sh*t on him, his resume is sick)did when they took over from the likes of the Cold Crush and Trecherous 3. Like I said, ealier you can argue this list a lot of ways but don't say to place him at #1 you must be out of your mind, thats what's crazy!

Remember the G.O.A.T. is LEGEND in status. Don't confuse them with todays "hot" rappers (Wheezy, TI, 50, Beanie, Jada, any of the Dips, Jeezy, etc), its insulting. All of these people except EM has made a real CLASSIC or two or three.

On criteria of: Lyrics, Message, Consistentcy, and Longevity (this doesn't mean just how many albums you put out, but how long you were on top while you where out - Big).

Jay-Z (success made him the one you love to hate, not best at all categories but somewhere at the top of all - therefore MJ of rap)

Nas (Poet w/ a message - lyric for lyric who can really see him)

Big (ahead of his time to bad it was cut short)

Pac (not best lyricist but still a poet, and who could you feel more?)

Simply raised the bar. Put these 4 in any order you'll argue an eternity trying to figure it out.

I did think at one point some cornballs came up with the list but they show you how they come up with everybody. Its alot of categories each rapper was rated on and there were some southern and west coast people judging too. And if your real objective to each category and how each rapper really did then the list really isn't that far off.

Actually, MTV's list is not that inaccurate. They do make a case for the ten thye have listed, some of the order I would switch around though. In my estimation an MC is a person who can command respect from a crowd lyrically, whether it be in a jam in the park (back in the days), rock acapella, and also have the ability to rhyme over a track and command the same attention. People usually want to hear what an "MC" is saying, and the lyrics enhance the song, not the music. First off, you can't base who's the greatest MC on sales, becuase then you would have Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer on top of the list, and we all know they are not MCs. Me and a couple of heads I know had a heated discussion about this recently, and you can't have one list of greatest MC's. You have to have a list for MC's, rappers (a lot of Rappers are not necessarily great MCs, and vice-versa), "GREATS" (50 Cent, Nelly, guys who bring other things to the equation than lyrics), Duos, Groups, and Females. For the sake of this list though, second ten, (in no specific order)and then top ten aftwerwards some of which are not in order(too complicated to rank).

The Marshall Mathers Lp is truely the best rap album of all time. It Boasts so many classic songs including The Real Slim Shady, The Way I Am and the unforgetable Stan. The first time I heard the album i was absolutely amazed. I never heard such a dark record, it was nearly scarey. The Lyrical performance by Eminem is imense. Look say what you want about MTV. They don't play music anymore, but they did get this one right. What Tupac,Notorious B.I.G., Rakim, Nas,KRS-One, Heavy D.,and Big Daddy Kane did for the beginning of the Hip-Hop industry is what put it on the map. What Nas, Outkask, Jay-z and more recent rappers have done world wide has brought Hip-Hop to a new level.

Jay-z Number "ONE" for now? He has been at the front of this Hip-Hop ship for the past 4 years. But in two years there maybe someone else who will take his riun, and bring the ship another diection. For now though Jay is the Number One rapper.
