I agree with you to a certain extent but you also have to think about the artist because honestly what is the point of being on a major if your shit is gonna get shelved and pushed back into infinity (joe Budden). Then the reality is the only money you have seen is advance money which forces you to jump on any and every mixtape. If you go to a small label where they will push you a 110% on the strength that you might have a cult following in the streets (Dipset) and they know that whatever they put into you they will likely see a return on it. Then the artist on the indie label can get major exposure whereas the artist on the big label gets minimal exposure to due to competition from his labelmates

I just hate when we talk about how much money another nigga makes when we don't KNOW...several artists tour year- round and get paper that way, it's a living and it pays WELL. Believe it or not some of the bigger artists do smaller venues because its easier to promote and the money comes back quicker. And trust me, although I don't buy their mixtapes, D-Block makes enough off master sales alone in the Northeast to eat from. That shit's nit-picky when you base an album sales off what a nigga earns a year.
The recording industry's sales as a whole is down, so you gotta tour and do mixtapes...ask the Clipse how mixtapes keep you up, or all of the artists down south BEFORE the major labels started calling.

The only guy in G-Unit that's papered up from ALBUM sales is 50 because he sold enough albums last year; all the other cats needed those concerts to support the lifestyles they talk about.

That nigga's a genius in that respect because he's branched out to do other shit and managed to get a cut of every G Unit artists sales too. I think at the end of the day that's why he goes so hard, not for them but for HIM.

ok first of all..any artist that says they would rather sign to a independent label instead of a major is lying..second you cannot compare the south's mixtape circuit to that of NY because it's plain different...in teh south an artist can sell a cd independently from his truck for $10 (ex. master P and David Banner)..in NY..you can't do that..the most you will get is $5 and most bootleggers are selling cd's 2 for $5...

now lets crunch the numbers...if an indepentdent artist signed to kock sells 50,000 cd's he is seeing at most $400 K @ $8 return...most kock artist don't sell that much or get that much per cd...now if a major label artist sells platinum and gets only $1 that's already a million before taxes...so he is ahead..

now lets talk shows..if an independent artist wants to do a show..they are guaranteed to be cheeper than a platinum artist..that's why there tours are generally shorter and more localized..so all in all..if you at least go one time platinum on a major label..you start off ahead of the game...thsi is with the exclusion of not being able to handle your money...

now lets also take into account that this same major label artist will be marketed over seas because he is platinum so it's only natural..koch does not market any of their artist..so that's all out of your pockets...so if you only sold 50,000 cd's you then have to pay for the video that you did yourself...and your own promotions...a major label artist has already had this taken out of their money..this is why they are left with $1 per cd...(remember that this is a new artist deal) the fact that you went platinum..you can then renegotiate...

anyone who wants to disput..can you please name one east coast artist who went gold as an indepentdent..??

remember the south is a whole different ball game because they don't have the amount of bootleggers we have in NY and they sell mixtapes for the same amount as regular albums...

now if you add other items like the internet and such into the equation..then bothe artist still stand to make more money but teh major label guy is still coming out on top..given the facftor that he went platinum..
