Cardan: The Million Dollar Baby Swings Back

Cardan may be a young emcee, but make no mistake - this former Mase protégé is no newcomer to the game. The world first learned his name back in the 90's when at the age of 16 he was handpicked by Mase for his “Harlem World†crew.
After a solo record deal fell through, the Harlem native managed to reinvent himself as the talent behind some of hip-hop's biggest names. With ghostwriting credits under his belt for the likes of Nelly and P.Diddy, and after surviving a shooting that could have put an end to way more than just his career, Cardan is finally ready to take on the industry on his own terms.
SOHH NYC: What was it like back then being only 16 years old and running around with Mase, one of the biggest rappers in the world at the time?
Cardan: It was dope. I was definitely excited, man. I was still in school and all that, so I was excited and it was cool running around with them. And he was linked with Puffy and Biggie and all them, Jr Mafia. So I used to see them guys.
After school I used to just go right over there and Mase would be in there recording his album and stuff. It was dope, man. Cam'ron [would be there].
SOHH NYC: A few different people such as Loon, Cam, and Jim Jones have brought your name up when talking about their own personal problems with Mase. I know you two have had disagreements in the past, but what is your relationship with Mase like these days?
There's so many rappers and there's so many people that can rap and that are skillfully talented, but Mase actually embraced me, took me under his wing.
So I appreciate that a lot, ‘cause he didn't have to do that and there was plenty of rappers he could've done that for. You feel me? So that right there is like a get out jail free card with me, that's how much I appreciated it. But me and Mase is cool, he did a lot of things that I don't agree with, but like I said, Mase did a lot for me so I'll forgive him all the time.
SOHH NYC: So you kind of fell back from the game from the minute after that?
Cardan: Yeah, Yeah, I mean I didn't fall back intentionally, It's just that's what I was left with you know, I mean I was still recording and everything. But that was like my foot in, and Mase was like my co-sign, so after he left people start to treat you different and funny you know?
The guy that was had been managing us at the time, Cooter, we stayed in contact and we were at Jermaine Dupri's birthday party in Atlanta about 5 years ago and that's when the St. Lunatics ran up on him and gave him their demo, and that's how Nelly came about. Nelly was my second foot back in the door.
SOHH NYC: Now I don’t think too many people really heard about how you got shot last Summer. Can you tell us about what happened?
Cardan: Well I was out getting some footage for my Harlem World DVD that I was trying to put together, so I was out one night about 3-4 in the morning, at an annual block party cookout in Harlem that goes on every year. So, I went over there to get some footage.
So I was just chilling man and I had a little jewelry on, my watch, a couple of chains. Some guys acted like they were walking past us and stopped right where we were. So we filming, and 3 or 4 dudes came up pulling out these big ass guns, like shit the cops don't even have, these shits were like Afghanistan guns man, I was just trippin!
I got up to run, and my friends and everybody that was there said yo don't run. All I heard was guns cocking back, and my first thought wasn't robbery, my first thought was assassination. My first thought was "Oh shit, somebody's trying to do me." As soon as I got up to run, dude just shot. I got shot in the stomach, I fell on the floor, I thought he was gonna come up but he didn't. I got up to run again, got halfway down the block, got shot again. The shit hit me in my foot. By this time, I'm in the middle of everything, it's a scene by now, everybody done heard the gunshots, the music stopped and kids running...and you know it's a scene by now.
By the grace of God man, I got up and ran and ran and this girl was in front of the building that I ran towards, and I was just like 'Ma you gotta call an ambulance or something for me..' And she called the ambulance for me and next thing, I woke up in intensive care.

SOHH NYC: I hear you’re going to be dropping a mixtape soon.
Cardan: Yeah, I'm working on a mixtape right now, it's called the Million Dollar Baby. That's gonna be crazy, I got alot of new street joints coming up on that. I got this song called the Ghostwriter thats blowing up right now. I'm trying to do the remix with Styles and Ghostface Killah. And I'm just working on getting this new record deal, I got some labels on the table, but I'm just trying to get my buzz up you know to make it a little more interesting.
