Rakim Hearts The Dipset Movement

In a recent interview Rakim, considered by many to be the greatest M.C. to ever hold a microphone, expressed his admiration for Dipset and announced that he even plans on working with them in the near future. If Ra had been talking about any other crew in hip hop, it may not have been that big of a deal, but Dipset being who they are, the statements have caused a small uproar on blogs and message boards across the internet. With this particular crew it's usually either you love them or you hate them, and the people on the hate side of the argument seem to think these statements signal the beginning of the end of hip hop as we know it.
Personally, I fall somewhere in the middle with the Dips, I can respect their hustle and I enjoy some of their music, but I wouldn't exactly consider their stuff groundbreaking or anything. At the same time I don't think they're the downfall of hip hop, and I don't find it at all surprising that the R is feeling them on some collaboration shit. It's a new age in hip hop the god has to eat too, so why shouldn't he work with a crew from his hometown that does its numbers?
I know a lot of people, especially those from my generation, don't really want to hear that kind of talk, but it's the truth. Trust me, even if it's wack, a Jim Jones and Rakim joint isn't going to cause the sun to fall out of the sky. If anything, Ra walks away with a check and who knows, maybe some of the younger dudes out there will learn a thing or two about lyricism.

I can respect Dipset's "Movement", but they do too much tough talking. Them cats won't bust a grape, much less a cap in someone. They make some good songs, but for the most part they are weak on the mic. They copycat whatever is hot. They lack originality, but so does 98% of the rap game so I don't hate on them. But they really need to stop with all the tough talk, really. Cam thinks he is Alpo now, cut that out. It was a movie. Cam and Dipset remind me of 50 and G-Unit. Jim Jones gets jumped and Cam gets snuffed and they get no getback. Cam gets shot, he starts dry snitching and they get no getback. 50 gets stabbed by some no name Murder Inc rapper, Black child, or whatever and no getback. 50 gets shot and still no getback. I like G-Unit(well 50, Banks and Buck, but like Cam and Dipshit they stay taking L's, unless you count 50's assault on Ja Rule's career.

You have a good point dawg. I’m not the biggest fan of dipset, but I respect them niggas for having their own style and standing out. I like a handful of their songs and think they have talent, it’s just Camron I’m not feeling. He just seems like an asshole and I don’t thinkhe puts out that mush hot shit to back up his cockiness. He seems fake to me. He was an athlete in higschool, not much time b/w practice to be on the streets, but if he says so. Anyways, I love Rakim and anything that brings the man a paycheck or some new, younger fans, then I’m all for it. Maybe he can teach Dipset how to be “righteous†and change their ways. Ya’ll are probably gonna attack me for what I said, but just look at their karma, Cam, Freaky tah, Jim jones, and others have been jumped, shot, robbed and they have countless beefs. Just like G-Unit, you can argue that everybody just hatin on them, but is everybodyelse the only ones hatin 4 no reaon or do Dipset and G-Unit play their part? I hope many of the other new or younger hip-hop artist would work more with the older or even legendary rappers. Scareface, Kool G rap, 8ball & MJG, and UGK are all good examples of this. It worked for Kool G Rap I remember when I first heard “fast life†with Nas and “the realest†with Mobb Deep, It made me open my eyes to Kool G Rap more than when I first heard him. Those are some classic joints. Kane, Nice-n-Smooth, Public Enemy, KRS one, Mc Lyte (for the female rappers), and many other old school artist could possibly be the answer to helping encourage some of the rappers to open up their minds and expand the subject matter and themes. Cuz the same thing is happening in the south that happened in the north. Everybody is starting to sound alike. I just miss variety, a broader subject matter, and individuality in hip. The old school rappers can also help the new rappers fight corporate America so that they don’t take over hip-hop and destroy it, like with heavy metal. Look, I am not trying to have a dipset, g-unit, north vs. south argument, I just support Rakim working with dipset and would like to see other legendary rappers and new artist work together.

I respect Rakim as one of the truly groundbreaking lyricists of our time. I still listen to the paid in full album all the time, but to be real about it his shit is dated. The last album that rakim made was wack as hell and the reason why he is taking so long to make a new one is because his shit is dated and wack.
